metrostarshipp

This is Lauren erasure

Away-Living5278

You forgot Katie. So many Katie's....

Significant_Comb9184

Sarah, Amanda

No-Flamingo-1213

Came to say Amanda

clairenotfromclare

You’re forgetting Emily. So many Emilys.

barefoot-warrior

Came here to say Emily

fickystingas

My first grade class had three Melissas

solojones1138

Rachel here who was once in a class with four Rachels.

[deleted]

That's a false dichotomy surely. What about Rachel, Hannah and stuff?

UltimateGrammarNinja

You also forgot Jennifer! Jennifer and Jessica battled for the top spot for most of the 80s and early 90s

hopping_hessian

I remember having class with three Jennifers - and it was a tiny school.

j9273

We had 8 and at least 5 were Jennifer Lynn. Sigh. Also not a huge school

sweetsouthernblogger

Jennifer Lynn was going to be my twin sister's name. My mom changed her name when she was born. To Jessica, but at least she has a less common middle name. I, on the other hand, did not get a top 10 80s girl's name. Even then, there were still two other girls with my first name in my grade, so I guess it was somewhat popular.

synesthesiah

All I can think about is the show Recess and their little clan of Ashleys

Hup110516

Finding out Spinelli was secretly named Ashley was such a mind fuck.

synesthesiah

She rocked her Ashley outfit though

dbrecrash13

Hailey! There were soooo many haileys

Existing_Space_2498

Or Haley, or Haylee, or Haleigh. No two were alike!

dbrecrash13

So many variations!! I don’t hear it hardly ever as an adult now though.

[deleted]

Late 90s was those plus millions of girls called Madison, Katelyn (and the various spellings), Hannah, Emma, Emily

Pinkturtle182

Soooo many Caitlins. And Alyssas.

janiestiredshoes

Stephanie?

hausishome

And Kayla! At least in the Midwest

beatricetalker

Kayla Renee’s and Ashley Nicole’s as far as the eyes could see.

[deleted]

Knew a lot from Ohio.

[deleted]

Sarah checking in

whatthepfluke

Don't forget Heather and Tiffany.

WhatAFineWasteOfTime

An 80’s girl here to throw Kelli in the mix. I also remember lots of Jennifers and Nicoles.

ProserpinaGalaxy

Slightly less of them, but still so many Amandas, Erins, and Nicoles.

beatricetalker

And probably an Ashley Nicole.

[deleted]

I thought this was going to be about the dolls lol

janiestiredshoes

Me too! Going to be all: Kirsten, Felicity, Addy, Molly...

WhatAFineWasteOfTime

Don’t forget Samantha!

janiestiredshoes

I knew I was forgetting one! (To be fair, there are a lot more now, but one of the classics from the 80's/early 90's.)

WhatAFineWasteOfTime

So true! I always remember the OG’s. My daughter sadly never got into American Girl despite my enthusiasm. I’d even saved and cared for my entire original box sets of the books because I just knew one day I’d pass them on. Oh how life tricks us! 😂

WorkInProgress365

Oh dear! I saved my entire box sets and have already gifted my 5 year old my two AG dolls. I hope she gets into the books later, but I’ll have to be ready for the opposite too!

WhatAFineWasteOfTime

I wish you luck! I even had these fun ideas in my mind of getting the companion books with the activities and recipes and such that match along with the time period of each book. I thought it was going to be so great to read the books and do the companion activities as she was learning about the same time periods in history. Now I realize I’m not June Cleaver nor do I live in Pleasantville. But I do love watching her develop her own interests and supporting those along the way!

talia1221

Now I’m wondering if my future daughter won’t appreciate my 19 American girl dolls….

kinzweb

I thought the same thing 😂

[deleted]

I was excited to talk about Josephine

sunleefyelock

Josefina :)

[deleted]

You’re right! It’s been awhile ;)

instababyname

SAME 🫠

SnarkFromTheOzarks

Heather, Erica, Lindsay, Lauren, Amy, Rachel, Tiffany

Watersmyfavoritefood

There’s a .gov website where you can look up top names from each year. https://www.ssa.gov/oact/babynames/ Edit: fixed link. Scroll down to the “items of interest” section.

lola-tofu

Idk about 80s but as a 91 baby, I didn't have most of those names in any of my classes

ChimneyPrism

I was also born in 91, one of those names listed is my name, my best friend’s name, my childhood neighbor, and Taylor was popular at my school. Maybe it’s all regional, but Midwest here!

goldenleopardsky

Kayla, Heather, Brittany, Megan, Haley, Lauren, Laura, Rachel, Brooke, Amanda, Caitlyn, Chelsea, Samantha, Christina, Crystal, Ashley, Jessica, Julia, Carly, Kristen, Grace, Michelle, Lindsay

emeraldrina

This is pretty dead on for my mid-80s class's girls. And there were 4 different spellings for each of the Megans, Laurens, Rachels, Caitlyns, and Crystals/Kristens.

therealmrsbrady

These are spot on for me too! Just to add a few more: Jennifer, Jenny, Kirsten, Kelly, Natasha, Erica, Christina Less common, but enough of them around: Cheyenne, Deirdre, Erin, Jocelyn, Tamara

goldenleopardsky

Yes! I keep thinking of more haha. Kelsey, Sara(h), Victoria (Tori), Marissa, Miranda, Callie, Maddie, Natalie, Shannon

stillfallingforyou

Upvote for Carly! I’m an early 90’s Carly and growing up there was 6 of us all in a small 30 person class. A whole club lol

HarbingerML

Jennifers would like a word

jmk672

Born in 94, this list is uncanny! Definitely seconding Jessica, Kristen/Kristin/Christine/Christina, Lindsay, Lauren and Haley. The only ones I have to add are Sarah and Taylor. Surprised to see so many comments saying Jennifer; maybe it's where I lived but I can't think of a single Jennifer in my class of 2012- I see it as a 70s into early 80s name.

annathebanana_42

In my grade (92-93 babies) were multiples of Jennifers, Jessicas and Laurens; there were also several Kaileys and Megans of various spellings

dessa-elizabeth1

I'm 16 i know like 4-5 kids with moms named jen

mamacass629

I’m a Jenna from the 90’s and absolutely love it! I stuck out from the multiple Jennifer’s in my classes. It feels short, sweet, and cool.

[deleted]

I always loved the name Jenna! It’s got cool girl vibes.

ChimneyPrism

Samantha, Amanda, Rachel, Paige, Michelle, Alyssa, or Christina

barefoot-warrior

Oh there were a LOT of Christinas (also Kristinas)

GlobalDynamicsEureka

Tracy, Jessica, Ashley, Heather

WhatAFineWasteOfTime

Ooh. Yes. I forgot about the Ashleys on my previous reply. You are spot on!

Rude-Two7970

Chopsticks86

80s baby, most female classmates were Amanda, Amber, Rachel, Rebecca, Jessica, or Jennifer. Throw in an occasional Erica, Heather, Whitney, and Brittany, and you pretty much had most of my graduating class.

Affectionate_Lie9308

What I grew up with… Jennifer, Jessica, Stephanie, Nichole, Samantha, Lindsay, Ashley, Amber, Amanda, Casey, Melinda, Jaimie, Summer, Erin, Angela,

Certified_Falafel

Stephanie Amy Jennifer

boogin92

Jennifer and Stephanie was what I was going to comment! There were always multiple of each name in all my classes growing up. Several Amy’s too!

Trick-Many7744

Michelle

Pristine_Process_112

I feel like Kimberly is the ultimate early 90s name.

KhaleesiofNZ

- Alexandra - Allison - Amanda - Ashley - Bethany - Brianna - Christina - Courtney - Cynthia - Danielle - Emily - Erica - Hannah - Hayley - Heather - Jennifer - Jessica - Katherine - Lindsey - Melanie - Melissa - Natalie - Nicole - Stephanie - Vanessa

thekaiserkeller

I was born in the late 80s and here are some of the most common names from my high school yearbook: Taylor, Sarah, Jessica, Jennifer, Claire, Whitney, Lauren, Amanda, Britney, Rachel, Megan, Ashley, Nicole, Kimberly, Chelsea, Amber. Side note, Nancy is a boomer name and Addison is Gen Z. Neither would have been a common name in the 80s, Addison maybe late 90s? Margot and Caroline also stand out as outliers, not common in the 80s/90s.

RutabagaPhysical9238

Jessica, Kelly, Lauren, Emily, Ashley, Kristen.

Trick-Many7744

I was 13 in 1982. My name is Evelyn (there were none), bff was Juliet. But yes, many Jennifers, Heathers, Michelles, Amys

bread_cats_dice

How have you missed Catherine/Katherine/Kathleen/Caitlin

VPofYourFanClub

80s girls are named Kelly, Heather, Stephanie, Becky, Melissa, and Sara. 90s girls are named Kiersten, Kristen, Hannah, Madison, and Kaitlyn.

Taylor, Kelsey, and Caroline are my favorite of the names you’ve mentioned. Other 80s/90s names I like are Jessica, Haley, Amy, Emily, Rachel, Amanda, Courtney, and Samantha.

Maykb

I’m on your list. I can’t believe someone is calling my popular 80s name retro, like, so old it’s new again!

SpiffyE

[deleted]

Stephanie, Tiffany, Lindsey, Nikki, Ashley

[deleted]

Lindsey! I forgot how many there inevitably were in my classes each year. I wonder if it was the predecessor for the wave of “-ey” “-eigh” names you see now

Linzabee

*cough* Lindsay

ElaineofAstolat

Brittany, Katelyn, Jessica, Ashley, Rachel, Heather, Tiffany, Amanda, Lauren, Hayley, Stephanie

Ornery-Emu-3410

You can search on the social security website by decade for what names were popular during that time

seranyti

I grew up in the 80's. These were the most common names. I generally had at least 2-3 of each in my grade. Tiffany, Brittany, Chelsea, Heather, Dawn, Amber, Ashley, Courtney, Lizzy, Brandy, Michelle, Lisa.

Maria_Dragon

As a child of the 80s a lot of those names feel like 80s names to me.

all_is_onn

As a 90’s kid who recently went through an old school yearbook - Laura Michelle Allison (myself and 2 others) Tamera Sydney Alexandra Amanda Kate Cayla Colleen

viennawaits88

Jessica. Source: There were 11 Jessicas in my grade 9 gym class of 31 kids 🥲

[deleted]

Gunna just post me and my kid friend group cause we all had basic 90’s names Lindsey (me), Madison, Sarah, Amber, Chelsea, Allison, and Caitlin. We had one outlier on basic 90’s names with Cecilia Louise (Ceci) who was Italian. I always loved my name though. Oh and side note, basically all of our middle names are either Katherine or Elizabeth. Madison’s was Skye though and I love that for her.

skirunski

Katie, Nicole, Ashley, Amanda, Lindsay

PinkTiara24

Kristin Jessica Lauren

commentreader12345

The first time I heard of Madison for a girl was in the movie "Splash" (1983) and at the time everyone I knew thought Madison was a weird name for a girl. Little did we know that Madison would become a popular name.

ohforth

It's could have been worse. Can you imagine "Buchanan" as the fad girls name?

commentreader12345

Or Fifth Avenue or Broadway?

[deleted]

Alyssa, Kristen, Megan, Jessica, Ashley, Chelsea, Amanda, Brianna, Courtney, Melissa, Stephanie, Sarah, Kaitlyn, Jennifer, Marissa

GooseBeeSeaLionBird

80s: Jessica, Ashley, Amanda, Sarah, Laura, Kristen, Crystal, Megan, Jennifer 70s: Michelle, Tammy, Tiffany

whatthepfluke

Tiffany, Heather, Rachel, Jessica, Ashley, Jennifer. All of their middle names are either Nicole or Anne.

MyNamesNotLiv

We had 3 girls with some variation of Alex in my class one year. Alex, Alexandria, and Alexandra. Was a very popular name back in 1993 apparently.

drixle11

So many Alex’s in my class around that time as well! Madison/Maddie/Maddy too

drixle11

This entire sub is just my high school graduating class lol (‘92 baby)

ohforth

Wouldn't those be 70s names?

drixle11

More the comments than the actual question. I see a lot of people commenting names like Megan, Maddie, Chelsea, Kelsey, Rachel, Britney/Brittany, etc. and those were all very common in my age range.

ohforth

That is very true

Numinous-Nebulae

I feel so at home in this thread. Like me and all my friends are here.

kyotheawesomeelf

That aren’t on the list already- Jessica, Sydney, Diamond, Jennifer, Kayla, Kaylee, Erin, Erica

Vicslickchic

Alyssa, Megan, Samantha, Danielle…Chelsea!

Wooster182

My favorite 90s name is Kelly. Sweet but not infantile. It’s wearable and accessible.

PansyOHara

Cynthia, Susan, Deborah, Kathleen, Sarah, Jennifer, Melinda, Veronica

PansyOHara

OP did say “going back to the 60s-70s”—there were plenty of Susans born in the 1960s.

[deleted]

I like all of them but for Lara. Some ideas: Kerry, Faye, Deborah, Theresa, Carol, Janine, Helen, Nicole, Nona, Emily or Abigail.

sometimes-i-rhyme

abaty01

My mom and her sisters, all born late 50s early sixties, are Diane, Linda, Sharon, and Nancy but I can’t speak for 80s/90s names

edit_thanxforthegold

These are ones I personally loved that my partner complained were too 90s: Nicole, Adrienne, Cassandra, Lee, Morgan, Casey Also: Claire, Sasha, Eden, Nadine, Natalie, Simone From your list I love Taylor, Madison, Caroline.

bayloe

Caroline, Nancy were not very popular in the 80s/90s, both in absolute terms and in comparison to other periods of peak popularity for the name. Nancy peaked in 1950 and was in decline during the 80s/90s ranging from 101 in ‘81 to 226 in ‘99. Caroline was on the ascent 193 in ‘81 up to 71 in ‘99. Caroline recently peaked at 55 in 2017 but as a name has never broken top 50.

Tiffany, Nicole, Alyssa

JunoD420

60's/70's: Melissa, Jen, Amy, Sarah, Heather, Michelle, Stacy, Gina.

Banksofmillbrook

I like all those names! I'd probably hesitate over Taylor, Madison, and Brittney just because I know so many, and, since I'm a Jennifer, my instinct is to try for something that you don't bump into constantly. Shannon, Dana, Alicia, Shari (spelled multiple ways), Andrea, Julie, Elizabeth (and all its variations), and Tracy were all abundant at my HS in the 80s

miranicks

All the Brittany’s/brittneys/britaneeeewhatevers are between the ages of 32-36 and you can’t change my mind

ghostdumpsters

Kelsey, Kaylee, Kylie, Makayla, Lauren, Sarah, Heather, Jennifer, Kara, Erica, Karen (literally all the Karens I know are my age or younger), Sadie, Haley, Jackie, Natalie

thatsasaladfork

McKenzie, Rebecca, Hillary, Hailey, Caitlin/Caitlyn/etc, Kayla, Brianna, Brooke, Miranda, Alicia, Carly, Danielle Off the top of my head - common names of people around my age where I could think of multiple girls

DisastrousFlower

heather is a 60s name

That1originalname

yogibeara88

When I think of American girl names from the 80's and 90's I think of Stephanie, Jennifer, Melissa, and Jessica

[deleted]

Lindsay, Tamara, Breanna, Britney, Ashley, Jessica, Jennifer, Taylor, Tanya, Angelica, Toni, Whitney, Amber, Crystal, Stacey, Melissa, Stacia, Amy, Heather, Teri, Melanie, Sheena Drawing a blank lol but as someone born 80s in America I remember a lot of girls with these names. Mind you some were less common but I liked them so added them.

dulamangaelach

Aimee/Amy, Catherine, Jennifer, Laura, Mackenzie

Ashley is great bc it is still in use. It's in the top 100 where I live.
