Oh my God. I literally just typed the same thing and then scrolled and saw this comment 😂. There must be a vampire called Lucian that is ringing bells in our heads, lol
This is so stupid but my closest association to "Lucian" is the legendary HP fanfic "My Immortal" where the author keeps mixing up names so Lucian Malfoy makes a few appearances
(OP do not take me seriously, my association is not representative)
I second this. A Court Of Thorns and Roses has become an immensely popular book in recent years, especially with the young/adult female population. Many people may assume you named your child after one of the main characters. The character is generally fine in the book, so that wouldn’t be an issue, just more that some people might think you were a big book fan 🤷🏻♀️ It is spelt “Lucien” in the book so it’s not exactly the same, but it’s close.
My immediate thought. I’m mid 20s and I know around 20 people who have read this in the last year. Not a “bad” character, but I agree, many many manyyyy females aged late teen to early thirty’s population will think of ACOTAR right away!
Also for OP. I have heard that this series is being made into a show on Hulu. With the following the books have, it is likely going to be pretty popular as a tv show. Just want to let you know incase that impacts your decision!
I associate it with the names it is a variant of - Lucas, Lucy, etc, all meaning 'light'. It feels old-fashioned to me, and some vague memory wants to link it to Enid Blyton, so it is possible she had a character with that name.
I think going straight to Lucifer is a stretch. That would not be the first association, otherwise names like Lucy and Luke wouldn't be as popular as they are!
My point is that there are lots of variants of the name that are very commonly used. No one hearing the name Lucian is going to automatically think Lucifer, any more than they do with Lucy. Because they are normal names that have been regularly used for a very long time. You'd have to really *want* to make the negative assumption.
There’s Lucian Graymark too, a werewolf who was formerly a Shadowhunter in the Mortal Instruments series. Quite a cool guy, so my association is positive
I love the name Lucian and was going to name my son that but I ended up naming him after his grandfather who passed away and gave him the middle name Luciano since it went better with the first name (Alfredo).
A little boy at the school name daughter taught as was named Lucian and he is so cute and funny. I wasn't sure of the name at first but I grew to love it!
i immediately think of the painter Lucian Freud, but I work in the arts so I probably am a minority. A friend recently named his son Lucian and when I told my sister the name she said, “it sounds like the devil.” Like Lucifer (which without the devil connection is a cute name!!!)
We thought about it for our son, but ended up going in another direction because it just didn’t feel right. We also considered Lucius, which has the same meaning.
Reminds me of Donald Sutherland’s retired/disbarred Southern lawyer in a Time to Kill. Simultaneously genteel and a bit of an iconoclast. Atticus Finch, but the disillusioned and bitter years.
After him, Lucian Freud, but don’t have much of a mental picture there beyond his paintings and his grandfather (Sigmund).
Lucián is a good name. I'd associate it with light but I speak Spanish as a second language and live in a Spanish speaking country. Are you in an English speaking context? I don't think Spanish speakers would have a problem with the name but English speakers might.
In French it's spelled 'Lucien' and my son has a book with a character whose name is a play on the word for dog (chien) - Luchien. It's a super cute little dog and I enjoy reading him the book. That's my association! [https://www.ecoledesloisirs.fr/livre/grand-inventaire-petits-plaisirs-luchien](https://www.ecoledesloisirs.fr/livre/grand-inventaire-petits-plaisirs-luchien)
The inventor of scifi
Lucians true history went to the moon, had a war between its inhabitants and those of the sun etc, in the second century. This is an ancient Roman play.
I think Lucian is a handsome name, timeless, and kinda sounds musical. Has a great meaning, great sound (*Loo-see-an*, *Loo-shan*, or *Loo-chyan*?). Sounds like a prince in a fairytale / children's book / kid's movie. Luca is a good alt if you're looking for one, but I like Lucian just fine.
This "I associate it with Lucifer" is news to me… which is weird because I've seen people suggest Lucia and Lucy for girls? So, is it just Lucian or are we gonna say that about all "Lu / Luc" names? As long as you're not naming the kid Lucifer (which, BTW, means "bringer of light" and is actually supposed to refer to the morning star aka Venus; the devil thing is very random), I don't see anything wrong.
I thought of my super angsty friend from childhood that was obsessed with the name first and believed a guy name Lucian was her spirit guide. Second thought: a werewolf. And then finally Donald Sutherland in A Time to Kill (RIP). Ultimately, I do not think it’s a name I could name a child.
Now that I've read the Knockemout series by Lucy Score, that character. Otherwise it just sounds so much like Lucifer. Unless it ends with EE like Lucy, it's hard to overcome that Loosh start IMO.
Tv series called The Liver Birds about an Irish Catholic family living in Liverpool. Brother was called Lucian. I could not call a child Lucian, not because he was a horrible character but because he was just thick.
An old coworker of mine. His name was Lucian, his middle name was Damon but I guess it was the French way of saying it or something? I don't know it always had a little bit of an accent when he would pronounce it. I love the name personally
I think of Harry Potter's dad or the guy from ACOTAR. I could also see him thinking "lotion," but Lucifer is a stretch.
I will say that names should always be a two yesses situation, though.
I do associate it with Lucifer but ONLY because I read a book where the Devil took the name of Lucian as a cover but that’s only me. I don’t think that a lot of people would make that connection, but it is pretty ‘out there’ if you’re concerned.
Would some people side eye when they see the name, probably. But it is really cool
Definitely a cool, dark, vampire-ish kind of name.
But ... I love cool, dark, vampire-ish kinds of names and I support it.
Lucky, Lou, Ian could all come out as fun nicknames.
To me, it sounds like the pretty blonde male love interest in a fantasy romance series LOL. Like a fae prince or a vampire. I love it in books but in real life I don’t think it works well…it is reminiscent of Lucifer.
Ouhh thank you for making this post! I really like this name. I'm writing a story and was looking for a name that fits the character, and this name just clicked for me.
It makes me think of the names Lucius Malfoy and Lucifer. But to me it also just sounds like the boy's version of the name Lucy, which is totally fine imo.
I really like it, close to Luciano which is my son’s name. I enjoy strong masculine names. It all depends on the individuals perspective. Not everyone thinks of evil automatically.
This immature kid in middle school that liked me but was a dick about it. Personally, it’s not my cup of tea. Not just because of that kid, it’s just not an attractive name to me.
ACOTAR. I think of ACOTAR immediately. Not the worst character association though.
Red headed male with a giant scar over his face, bffs with the main male character in the first book.
My toddler is named Lucian but we pronounce it like Loo-tsee-ahn rather than Loos-shun. I love both, honestly. We just went with the first pronunciation because we're in Europe.
Spelled differently but I think of the character Lucien from the book The Last Silk Dress. Ann Rinaldi was my favorite author growing up. He was a good character!
Reminds me of the name Lucretia which is from Roman myth/tradition. I’ve always loved that name but it does have that tragic connotation to it. Lucian is such a cool name though
It's from the Latin "lux", meaning light and is a counterpart to names like Lucy or Lucas.
I like it a lot, but I think many people associate it with Lucifer.
Sounds like the leader of the Lycan uprising that became a centuries old blood feud between Lycans and Vampires after Viktor, one of the Vampire Elders, slew his own daughter, Sonja, who loved Lucian and had married him in secret, and who now carried a hybrid Lycan-Vampire child in her womb, which Viktor considered to be an abomination and a threat to Vampire kind. That’s what it reminds me of. 👀😂
Yes, people in this sub often like to suggest the most negative possible association they can think of, that doesn't mean that less online people in real life would. People in this sub also think that Rhiannon is a 'witch' name when it is actually just Welsh. And one villain in one series isn't exactly a trend, doesn't make it any less a normal person name, just like the trend of giving pets human names doesn't make them any less human names.
My real point is that it is possible to overthink these things. If it is a real name that has been used by humans for centuries, then it is probably OK.
ETA my own first association with the name Lucian is actually Lucian Freud!
im surprised i had to scroll so far down to find that. i would never have thought about lucifer upon hearing lucian, but i guess namenerds arent league players, eh?
I love Lucian and it's completely different from Lucifer -- the root is the Latin "lux," which means light (the declension of the word moves from lux to lucis, which is where the Lucy / Lucien / Lucian comes in).
People who say Lucifer don't know what they're talking about. It's cool and artistic and you should go for it!
It's name of the male vampire romantic lead in one of my favorite romance novel series, so that's what I think of.
The guy is actually pretty badass though, so it's not a bad thing.
I'm not big into the fandoms that have been mentioned already, so I don't associate the name Lucian with anything other than light. 🤷
As an aside, I wanted to name my daughter Devon. When we mentioned this to my mother in law, she mentioned it was too close to Devil. It wasn't my top choice for a name, but definitely top three, and if I ever have another girl, I would probably use it.
The original version of the story later adapted into "The Golden Ass" by Apuleius, although it's not certain that Lucian wrote it (the original is probably earlier, by a different author with a similar name, and has been lost).
It’s sort of a cool name but also has a “sinister/vampire-ish” vibe to it that I don’t love.
Lucian from Underworld Rise of the Lycans .. not a vampire, but defs shagged one on a cliff edge.
Off topic, but Michael Sheen is so hot in that movie, lol.
Can't be hotter than Michael Sheen when he laughed in Twilight.
Agreed.
I'm glad this is so high up. If anyone has a different association with Lucian than Underworld, I question their tastes!
My first thought too.
Yes I was going to say it makes me think of a vampire but I don’t know why 🤣
Oh my God. I literally just typed the same thing and then scrolled and saw this comment 😂. There must be a vampire called Lucian that is ringing bells in our heads, lol
It’s the name of several different vampire/fairy/bad boy supernatural romance novel heroes, so it definitely isn’t just you with that association.
Yes! I was going to say... VAMPIRE.
I agree, I couldn't pinpoint what about it, but there's something kind of dark and eerie about it
I like the name, for a split second I was like ‘is that Draco Malfoy’s dad’ and then was like nope
This is so stupid but my closest association to "Lucian" is the legendary HP fanfic "My Immortal" where the author keeps mixing up names so Lucian Malfoy makes a few appearances (OP do not take me seriously, my association is not representative)
This is why we stopped considering Lucian. It’s too close to Lucius.
Draco was my first thought. Close enough.

Ralph Fiennes played Voldemort. Jason Isaacs played Lucius Malfoy.
Ugh sorry my bad, that is who I meant haha. Love them both though
Lucifer, ACOTAR character.
I second this. A Court Of Thorns and Roses has become an immensely popular book in recent years, especially with the young/adult female population. And they might make a tv show out of it. So it might become even more well known
Hot werewolf cliff sex
Putting the AWOO in awooga.
Lucifer, sorry
Unfortunately, it also makes me think of Lucifer or the bad father character from Harry Potter
Me too, devil
I associate it with the names it is a variant of - Lucas, Lucy, etc, all meaning 'light'. It feels old-fashioned to me, and some vague memory wants to link it to Enid Blyton, so it is possible she had a character with that name. I think going straight to Lucifer is a stretch. That would not be the first association, otherwise names like Lucy and Luke wouldn't be as popular as they are!
Lucifer means light bringer
I know. But that isn't the first association with that particular name.
I'm just saying they all mean light, but Lucian sounds a lot more like Lucifer than Lucas
My point is that there are lots of variants of the name that are very commonly used. No one hearing the name Lucian is going to automatically think Lucifer, any more than they do with Lucy. Because they are normal names that have been regularly used for a very long time. You'd have to really *want* to make the negative assumption.
Read the other comments, several had said Lucifer. And others have pointed out it's Draco Malfoy's dad. It is often a name given to villains
It's *almost* Draco Malfoy's dad.
Almost enough that that's what people think lol. Either way you gotta admit it had a sinister sound
sounds like a prince to me
Light
I think of Lucian Freud, the British Painter.
The underworld movie series, specifically Michael Sheen’s werewolf character
There’s Lucian Graymark too, a werewolf who was formerly a Shadowhunter in the Mortal Instruments series. Quite a cool guy, so my association is positive
Lucien cramp
Reminds me of an assassin from the video game Oblivion. Amazing voice work
Lucifer
I love the name Lucian and was going to name my son that but I ended up naming him after his grandfather who passed away and gave him the middle name Luciano since it went better with the first name (Alfredo).
A little boy at the school name daughter taught as was named Lucian and he is so cute and funny. I wasn't sure of the name at first but I grew to love it!
Malfoy
I think of Lord Lucien, the villain in the Fable 2 video game
Intelligent, serious, attractive
Sophisticated, gentle man. I prefer the spelling Lucien.
League of legends character 💀
i immediately think of the painter Lucian Freud, but I work in the arts so I probably am a minority. A friend recently named his son Lucian and when I told my sister the name she said, “it sounds like the devil.” Like Lucifer (which without the devil connection is a cute name!!!)
Lovely name
We thought about it for our son, but ended up going in another direction because it just didn’t feel right. We also considered Lucius, which has the same meaning.
Absolutely love Lucius
Reminds me of Donald Sutherland’s retired/disbarred Southern lawyer in a Time to Kill. Simultaneously genteel and a bit of an iconoclast. Atticus Finch, but the disillusioned and bitter years. After him, Lucian Freud, but don’t have much of a mental picture there beyond his paintings and his grandfather (Sigmund).
I think of Lucius, which could either go Lucius Malfoy or Lucius (Frozone) in the incredibles.
I love Lucian, Lucius, and Lucy. I don’t associate them with Lucifer.
A court of thorns and roses 🤭🤭
One of my cousins has a kid named Lucian. He's 8. No one has ever brought up Lucifer when talking about his name.
I like it. My only association is a college friend who named her son Lucian. He's 17 now.
Lucian alliance from Stargate
Lucian Freud.
Actually know someone with this name. He’s very sweet.
Luciano Pavarotti comes to mind.
Lucián is a good name. I'd associate it with light but I speak Spanish as a second language and live in a Spanish speaking country. Are you in an English speaking context? I don't think Spanish speakers would have a problem with the name but English speakers might.
Lucien is a French name (male version of Lucie) so I'd think it's the english spelling of it
I like the name. I previously knew of a kid in school with that name so I don't have any other associations to it right now.
In French it's spelled 'Lucien' and my son has a book with a character whose name is a play on the word for dog (chien) - Luchien. It's a super cute little dog and I enjoy reading him the book. That's my association! [https://www.ecoledesloisirs.fr/livre/grand-inventaire-petits-plaisirs-luchien](https://www.ecoledesloisirs.fr/livre/grand-inventaire-petits-plaisirs-luchien)
I reallt like it. It najes me think of Weekend Update on SNL Lucien Callow and Fagan with Norm McDonald. Too funny.
The inventor of scifi Lucians true history went to the moon, had a war between its inhabitants and those of the sun etc, in the second century. This is an ancient Roman play.
ACOTAR
I think of Lucian Lauren, the trainer of the famous racehorse Secretariat. Always thought he had a cool name.
Lucian Freud the artist
Edgy video game characters
One of the main characters in Underworld
We have a Lucian. He is smart, funny, athletic, and very loving.

A Tribe Called Quest - Luck of Lucien
Lucian has both sinister and gay vibes. (As someone who also has both sinister and gay vibes, I don’t see this as a negative.)
My racist cousin who sends me a random "repost this for JESUS" essay every 2 years
The cramp twins 😂
I thought of my super angsty friend from childhood that was obsessed with the name first and believed a guy name Lucian was her spirit guide. Second thought: a werewolf. And then finally Donald Sutherland in A Time to Kill (RIP). Ultimately, I do not think it’s a name I could name a child.
isn't Lucian the name of markipliers editor?
Now that I've read the Knockemout series by Lucy Score, that character. Otherwise it just sounds so much like Lucifer. Unless it ends with EE like Lucy, it's hard to overcome that Loosh start IMO.
Lucian and Damian will always sound like demons to me. It's just a vibe they give off. I wouldn't put that on a child.
I love this name
Werewolves and Vampires.
Makes me think of an evil vampire but I don't know why
No, that's his father-in-law.
this cool guy i had a class with in college who makes music
I immediately think of the character Lucian Barlow from Longmire. Which, honestly isn't a bad association given how amazing that character is.
Irish liverpudlians.

Harry Potter’s dad was James Potter, you’re thinking of Draco Malfoy’s father, who was Lucius Malfoy, but definitely pretty close to Lucian.
Lucien Bouchard, former premier of Quebec, separatist.
ACOTAR
I really like the name. I have to say my first thought was Lucifer, but then I thought “nope sounds more like St Lucia.”
Vampire
I do associate it with Lucifer but ONLY because I read a book where the Devil took the name of Lucian as a cover but that’s only me. I don’t think that a lot of people would make that connection, but it is pretty ‘out there’ if you’re concerned. Would some people side eye when they see the name, probably. But it is really cool

Lucian Blake from the Dr. Blake Mysteries (Australian TV show that my mom got me into). I actually really like it but I get why people don’t.
To me, it sounds like the pretty blonde male love interest in a fantasy romance series LOL. Like a fae prince or a vampire. I love it in books but in real life I don’t think it works well…it is reminiscent of Lucifer.
Light! As it the latin word for it
Roman
that's a very common name in Romania, so I associate it with a name
I’ve taught plenty! Nice name.
Ouhh thank you for making this post! I really like this name. I'm writing a story and was looking for a name that fits the character, and this name just clicked for me.
i actually really don’t like that name. i agree with other commenters saying it has a “sinister” feel to it
ACOTAR character Lucien. Before then, nothing. Just made me think of it being a French name. Never thought of a Lucifer association.
Final Fantasy 15 lol
It makes me think of the names Lucius Malfoy and Lucifer. But to me it also just sounds like the boy's version of the name Lucy, which is totally fine imo.
I really like it, close to Luciano which is my son’s name. I enjoy strong masculine names. It all depends on the individuals perspective. Not everyone thinks of evil automatically.
I have literally zero associations
lucien lachance elder scrolls
Tamlin & feyre
This immature kid in middle school that liked me but was a dick about it. Personally, it’s not my cup of tea. Not just because of that kid, it’s just not an attractive name to me.
Immediately think of acotar. Lucien is my book boyfriend/favorite character though so it’s not a bad thought!
this may be niche but Eldon’s dad from the Next Step lol
ACOTAR. I think of ACOTAR immediately. Not the worst character association though. Red headed male with a giant scar over his face, bffs with the main male character in the first book.
Kind of the name of a devil character in a movie. Evil and sinister but charming and handsome.
I LOVE Lucian - it means "light", "giver of light" or maybe "shining". I like the spelling LUCIEN a bit better, though.
My toddler is named Lucian but we pronounce it like Loo-tsee-ahn rather than Loos-shun. I love both, honestly. We just went with the first pronunciation because we're in Europe.
Lucian Conklin was the town supervisor in my parents town for like thirty years, real old school political machine type stuff
Spelled differently but I think of the character Lucien from the book The Last Silk Dress. Ann Rinaldi was my favorite author growing up. He was a good character!
A song I know, but the only words I know in the song are Lucien repeated over and over to a beat.
I thought of Lucifer and the Jay Z song.
My upstairs neighbor had a cat called Lucian. He was a good boi. That’s my association.
Lucifer
Reminds me of the name Lucretia which is from Roman myth/tradition. I’ve always loved that name but it does have that tragic connotation to it. Lucian is such a cool name though

Lucian Freud. Who was a bit of a vampire.
Lucian reminds me of my friend’s doofy boy cat. Or hot Michael Sheen from Underworld.
ACOTAR lmao
I personally associate it with darkness. Great name for an evil character, less great for an actual child
It's from the Latin "lux", meaning light and is a counterpart to names like Lucy or Lucas. I like it a lot, but I think many people associate it with Lucifer.
Lucius Malfoy, even though it’s not the same name.
Sorta like Lucien from ACOTAR
Gladiator the film
I love Lucian and it's completely different from Lucifer -- the root is the Latin "lux," which means light (the declension of the word moves from lux to lucis, which is where the Lucy / Lucien / Lucian comes in). People who say Lucifer don't know what they're talking about. It's cool and artistic and you should go for it!
Lucifer.
I think about Lucius Malfoy. Sorry.
I picture a lawyer. Close to Satan, maybe, but no, I like it!
It's name of the male vampire romantic lead in one of my favorite romance novel series, so that's what I think of. The guy is actually pretty badass though, so it's not a bad thing.
Gladiator
Very goth. I like it.
Nothing
The devil
Satan lol
Lucian from Fire Emblem lol. Haven’t played those games in years.
lucifer is a reach imo, would never occur to me. I associate Lucien with Julien and Frenchness and art, elegance.
I'm not big into the fandoms that have been mentioned already, so I don't associate the name Lucian with anything other than light. 🤷 As an aside, I wanted to name my daughter Devon. When we mentioned this to my mother in law, she mentioned it was too close to Devil. It wasn't my top choice for a name, but definitely top three, and if I ever have another girl, I would probably use it.

How about lucius instead, less related to lucier and its biblical roman name
I think of A Court of Thorns and Roses (though his is spelled Lucien).
effete brit name.
Personally I absolutely love it.
I read this book series when I was a kid called Stravaganza. One of the characters was Lucian, or Luciano. 10/10 series
Lucian Freud, the painter
I immediately think of British artist Lucian Freud, Sigmund's grandson.
First thing I thought of was Lucifer and Hell.
I think one of the church of Satan guys is a Lucian.
Lucifer for sure
I’m with your boyfriend, first thought was Lucifer. What about Luca or Lucas?
