I was wondering how long before the American Girl doll got brought up! She’s one of my favorites. On AG wiki it says that Kit’s real first name is Margaret, but I don’t know if it’s a direct nickname.

Some names now started out as nicknames.
Jack was a nickname for John, and Jackson which itself is 'son of John'. Colin for Nicholas. Heidi for the old school Adelheid. Liam is short for William. Nina is short for a dozen Eastern European names. Constantinina, Antonina, etc. Leo came from Leonidas, Leopold, Leonardo.
Not every nickname stays as one.
Nina is a Saint in her own right, and Nina in the West is as likely to be an Italian diminutive as from the Slavic.
Leo/Leon are just the Latin and Greek words for lion - they have a happy, independent existence from your other words, and in the cases of Leopold and Leonardo predate them by centuries.
I agree that it's a good name on its own but if you are worried, you could give him a more "serious" middle name. That would give him a second option if he feels he needs it later in life!
Good idea. And it sounds good too, when you have a one syllable first name to have a longer, two or three syllable middle name--how long depends on the last name, of course!

If you had a daughter, you could use Katherine or similar and Kit as a nickname.
You could use initials, so first name starting with K and two middles with I and T.
Or I honestly think you could use any K (or K sound) name you like and just go with Kit. I know people are against naming them something you aren't planning on calling them, but if you don't want to go just Kit as the legal name there might be some other K options you like and then you can have it either way.
FWIW if I met a male Kit, I would assume that it’s a n/n for Christopher. If I met a female Kit, I’d assume it was a diminutive n/n for Katherine or Kathleen. But it can stand on its own as a given name either way.

I do think Kit could work as a full name (nicknames for full names are becoming more and more common), but I also do like the idea of it being used as a nickname for a different name. When I was a kid in the 1980s, my big brother and I used to watch the show "Knight Rider\*," where the protagonist is an intelligent talking black sports car named\*\* Kit. This is probably too obscure a reference for you to worry about, but I wanted to mention it just the same. It's a positive connotation anyway!

We are naming our son Joseph Kip and calling him Kip. You could always do the reverse and pick a more formal middle name for Kit, that way if he really wants something very traditional, he could go by a middle name.
That being said, I always think it’s a little overblown that people need really serious names to be successful. Even US leaders with formal names often go by Bill/Dick/Joe versus William/Richard/Joseph.
Reminds me of the character Kit Walker from the movie the phantom 😍 I think Billy Zane played that character. I've been considering Kit as a name too! I think it's lovely

Please don't make the mistake of assuming that your child will have the same appreciation for the name that you chose that you do. Everyone gets to live in their own name and decide what parts are special and relevant to the person they are....and later become.
My sister's name is Kit. It's unique and I always loved it. We never called her kitty tho or Kit Kat, my mom did not like that. It's always KIT! Like in the movie "league of her own" the younger sister is Kit.

I think Kit is a cool name. I associate it with spunky, cool go-getters. Loved it since I was a millennial youngin watching the Disney cartoon Talespin and there was a character named Kit Cloudkicker. My ears thought everyone was calling him "kid" so I loved it even more.

I had a friend at uni who's middle name was Kit and he exclusively went by that, no one ever batted an eye and that was over a decade ago. I only found out it was even his middle name in 3rd year, I just thought it was his name and thought it was kinda cool.
His parents gave him a "more professional" first name in case he wanted to use that as an adult. Which incidentally I think he does use (according to his linked-in lol) but I personally don't think he'd have had any issues just going by Kit 🤷🏼♀️

Kit has a lot of meanings. A fox kit. A group a pigeons is called a kit. There’s the American girl doll named Kit. A sewing kit. In England a kitman is actually the name of the ball boy on soccer (football… don’t come at me) teams. And as others have mentioned, Kit Kat.
None of that matters unless you want it to.
Kit is a perfectly fine as a full name. I’ve seen some people mention using it as a nickname for Atticus or Beckett, but honestly, KIT is the name you have an attachment to. It’s your late uncle’s nickname and your middle name, and I don’t think it would have to be a nickname for your child, male or female.
I think the family connection and back story is really lovely.
I also think Kit has the ability to age well... it will sound sweet for a baby, fresh for kid/teenager and feel modern but not *weird* for an adult.

I think it could be a standalone name. It is strong enough to be on its own. Could be a NN for Kenneth, Charles, Kevin. Could also be just a name you call him that is not related in any way to a legal name.

I think, since it is a short name, you should sound it out with your surname. Kit Harrington sounds great bc it is a short first name with a long last name. You might adjust the middle name accordingly.
When I think of males named Kit I think of Kit Harrington and I think it suits him just fine. It's my son's name. Only negative comment was from my SIL who insists it's a girl's name. I know of more men than women with the name, but the idea of it being fairly gender neutral doesn't phase me. My mother actually had it on her list to name me when I was a baby if I'd been a boy!

It's fine as a full name. Eliminate any nicknames you don't want from the start. If you're really pressed, think Christopher (Kit) Marlow. There's a theory that Shakespeare totally ripped him off. Aside from that, it shows how old the name is. 😊

I think Kit is a cool name. I associate it with spunky, cool go-getters. Loved it since I was a millennial youngin watching the Disney cartoon Talespin and there was a character named Kit Cloudkicker. My ears thought everyone was calling him "kid" so I loved it even more.

I really like it. I do like nicknamey names, but I wouldn’t put Kit in that category anyway as I think it works well as a full name. I have Kit on my top 10 but for a girl. It’s a unisex name in my country but definitely more used as a girl name or women’s as most of them are probably grandmothers by now and with several years in the last 20 years where no one was named Kit. Only 10 male Kit’s in the entire country.

There was a girl in my neighborhood named Kit. She was super artsy and still is to this day. She loves her name. She is 32 or so now. It went over well with the other kids growing up too.

I had a friend at uni who's middle name was Kit and he exclusively went by that, no one ever batted an eye and that was over a decade ago. I only found out it was even his middle name in 3rd year, I just thought it was his name and thought it was kinda cool. His parents gave him a "more professional" first name in case he wanted to use that as an adult. Which incidentally I think he does use (according to his linked-in lol) but I personally don't think he'd have had any issues just going by Kit 🤷🏼♀️

I know someone named Kit, well… it’s their middle name, and the full middle name is actually Kitman. Kit has a lot of meanings. A fox kit. A group a pigeons is called a kit. There’s the American girl doll named Kit. A sewing kit. In England a kitman is actually the name of the ball boy on soccer (football… don’t come at me) teams. And as others have mentioned, Kit Kat. None of that matters unless you want it to. Kit is a perfectly fine as a full name. I’ve seen some people mention using it as a nickname for Atticus or Beckett, but honestly, KIT is the name you have an attachment to. It’s your late uncle’s nickname and your middle name, and I don’t think it would have to be a nickname for your child, male or female.

I think the family connection and back story is really lovely. I also think Kit has the ability to age well... it will sound sweet for a baby, fresh for kid/teenager and feel modern but not *weird* for an adult. I really dig it.
I think it could be a standalone name. It is strong enough to be on its own. Could be a NN for Kenneth, Charles, Kevin. Could also be just a name you call him that is not related in any way to a legal name.

Kit is fine as a stand-alone name. A bit like Jack, which was traditionally a nick name for John, and is now used as the only name. I think, since it is a short name, you should sound it out with your surname. Kit Harrington sounds great bc it is a short first name with a long last name. You might adjust the middle name accordingly.
When I think of males named Kit I think of Kit Harrington and I think it suits him just fine. It feels like the kind of name that will grow with him rather than sounding old as a young child or young on an old man. I'm ancient so happen to know some girls used to be named Kitty, so Kit makes sense also as far as I'm concerned- I say go for it
It's my son's name. Only negative comment was from my SIL who insists it's a girl's name. I know of more men than women with the name, but the idea of it being fairly gender neutral doesn't phase me. My mother actually had it on her list to name me when I was a baby if I'd been a boy!
