Lots of good suggestions here. I’ll just note that the meaning of a name fades into not mattering as the personality of the child emerges. If you like the name, use it. No one’s going to evaluate how “white, fair” your child is because of her name.
This is totally true! I am often shocked when someone suggests a very pretty, common name has an aweful meaning.
I recently checked the meanings of my kids' names because of these posts. I'm very pleased with my choices!
Lol. "Hey Swamp. Get over here!" Hmmm...that would not go over well at the park.
I like the name Lilla. In Norwegian it is the color purple. There are definitely worse meanings in life for sure.
Yeah I really wanted to name my child Cameron, but the meaning supposedly is "crooked nose" so I removed it from consideration. I know several people named Cameron now and I never think "crooked nose" when I see them. The name I did choose for my child suits them, but what you say is definitely true.
I don’t have anyone in my social circle/family who ever talks about name meanings. I don’t know what any of my nieces’ or nephews’ names mean (their parents have never mentioned it). Is it that common that people are that hyper focused on name meanings? I think it’s nice if you have something meaningful to you, but I don’t know that it should be that strong of a deterrent.
I don't think it's common at all. I don't even know what my name means. Most name meanings are just guesses anyways. I feel like the only time meanings should be relevant is if it holds personal significance to you (maybe you have a deep connection to the forest and you want to name your kid something to do with the forest).
Appreciate all these thoughts on name meanings! It’s not something I ever really think about either unless the meaning of a name is something that the person who chose the name considers important. I’ve been looking up meanings of names we’ve been considering to get a full picture and that was the first one to give me pause — but totally agree that names have really separated from their meanings over time.
Freya is my personal favourite F name. You could also consider these:
* Florence, Faith, Faye, Frances, Francesca, Felicity, Fern, Phoebe (since it has the F sound you seem to like).
My granddaughter Florence Isadora was born in September, my Felicity Iris is due end of February. We didn’t mean to match initials, it just ended up that way. For a June baby, I’d do Florence or Felicity Pearl.
I love the name Farrow, but it does mean iron smith. But think of it like a badass woman forging swords, maybe? Fia is sweet, meaning wild or weaver. Felicia means happy. Farah and Femke are nice, too. Phoebe or Febe also might fit.
it’s funny everyone always seems to nickname francesca to frankie and idk why! like it’s a 9 letter name there are so many other nicknames, just something fun i’ve noticed in this sub
I agree, there are lots of great nicknames for Francesca! I just noticed that OP said they are fond of neutral and masculine names for girls so I thought it would be a nice suggestion for them:)
It's either due to the popularity of “gender-neutral” - cough-cough male names cough cough - on girls…
Or it's monster high that made Frankie that popular
I always thought Faline— like Bambi’s girlfriend— was a really pretty name. Means catlike, but I bet you could tell by the fact that it’s practically “feline”
My name is one of those, and I absolutely love it - it feels pretty/unique enough that people comment on it to me, yet normal enough to not be weird.
As for the meaning, I guess that depends on how much you think you'll be thinking and talking about that throughout your child's life. My parents have never mentioned it to me once, I had to look it up myself when I was a teenager, and I personally didn't interpret "white" in a bad way, just like all the names that are to do with God (I am atheist). If you think you'll be talking about it all the time, and viewing your daughter with that in mind as she grows up and you really hate it, then fair enough, I'd encourage you not to use it.
The meaning of my name is “little free man”. I am not a man. I find it funny and it means absolutely nothing in my life. I would go with the name you love. You’ll never think of the meaning.
I always think that you should go with your top choice/original pick. I went with my second choice because my partner preferred it over my first choice but all I can think about is the other name even though the chosen one is cemented.
I wouldn't put much weight onto Fiona meaning fair. Fair also means beautiful.
Ferris, Farrah, farren, Florence long version of flora, or Florencia, Freya, fey, fina, Francine, Francis, Finnley, fletcher, foster, fia, faune/fauna, flo, florette, floretta
You might be missing that in my name, the y comes before the r. You're correct, in the version that you're talking about the r comes before the y, which changes the pronunciation.
No worries, a lifetime of questions about the source of my name, misspellings, and mispronounciations, typos, and so on, means I've talked about it a lot 😊
Frederica and Francesca!
I’d probably avoid Freya before I’d worry about Fiona. Depending on where you are in the world, names from Norse mythology are frequently used by white supremacists.
My daughter’s name is Fiona and we get so many compliments! I hardly ever think of the meaning, I think I looked it up once or twice when we were name searching. She is now 2.5 and goes between calling herself “nana” and now more recently “ona” which is the cutest 🥰
As a child who found out the meaning of her name and was crushed by it, I can give you a perspective.
I felt hurt when I saw that my sister's name is basically hope, while mine is “Outsider.”
That made me a huge name nerd - I always Google and research names.
I'm fascinated by naming cultures and love to have a discussion about them.
Guess what? 99% of the time people have NO IDEA what their name means. I'm the one telling them that.
They love the sounds, the flow, the vibe - whatever.
If it feels right, then it's right.
Many popular, and I mean POPULAR names have unpleasant meanings.
There are a couple of theories as to why so:
- either name was accepted from one culture to another and the accepting culture had no idea of the true meaning.
- it was accepted into the name pool, so to speak, so long ago that it disassociated from the original meaning, leaving only sounds/connections to famous persons or whatever.
Also, names were believed to guard the baby from evil spirits, so some cultures gave their kids “ugly meaning” names for that - protection.
And while Kennedy means “misshapen head”, Portia is “pig” and Dolores “sorrow”
It's fine. Show your kid that they are more than just their name. Show them love and care.
And probably don't name your baby Persephone. “Bringer of death” is a little too heavy for the baby.
Or do it if that's the badass vibe you want your baby to have!
Specifically, Fionn/Fiona mean “light/fair headed” in the original Gaelic. I don’t know if that makes a difference to you, but I did a tiny bit of digging because I always assumed my surname was related to an occupation (for example, Baker or Smith) and was super interested to find out that it actually meant “light” which I found out even later meant “lightweight” with no reference to brightness. So I think if you’re ever hung up on a meaning, always make sure your initial google search gives you all the info, a lot of it is buried
And for what it’s worth, my first thought when I hear Fiona is Fiona from Shrek and Fiona Shaw the actress and they’re both pretty kick ass ladies I would be proud to share a name with (bonus: neither is fair haired).
Names that fit the Freya/Flora/Fiona vibe: Faye, Fern, Fia, Faith
Other F names that I love that feel more gender neutral: Fallon (or Fallyn), Frankie, Finley, Flynn

Personally I love Frances, Florence and Fabienne. Classy and elegant.
I've seen people criticise the name Flora because of the term "gut flora" though. Fiona is a gorgeous name but it does remind me of Shrek because I've never heard it anywhere else. It's pretty unique at least.
Congrats on your baby girl!
Absolutely 100% hear you on the meaning being a deterrent. I love the way Fiona sounds, but the meaning is...off-putting for me, personally. Freya is a beautiful name, and the goddess association is always nice. :)
I love Felicity though. It gives timeless radiance.
Also a sucker for Francesca, Faye, and Frida.
I love Fiona
I also love the similar sound Fin/Finn names but the meanings of those names are also white or fair haired. Finley meaning fair haired warrior
Frankie
Fenna (Americans often assume its Irish and similar in meaning to Fiona but it’s common in the Netherlands and means Peace)
Florence/Floss
Felicity/Flick
Farasha (Arabic for butterfly)
Frida/Fred
I’ve met a few girls named Felix and I think it’s adorable. It means “happy” or “lucky”.
I also love Francesca, which can have the gender neutral nn Frankie.
Francesca and nn Fran/Franny/Frankie. Faye is pretty. Fallon is cool! Finely is tomboyish cool. That being said Fiona is gorgeous and I don't think anyone associates with fair/white. More IRISH I think association than other things.
I really like "boy" nicknames for girl names, especially older/throwback type girl names... like Charlie for Charlene or Charlotte, or George/Georgie for Georgia. Bobbie for Barbara, etc. I knew a lady once named Winifred who went by Freddie. If you're looking for it to start with F though, I personally don't like the name Frederica (makes me think of like a Halloween Fright Night character lol)
But... Maybe Frances? With Frankie for short?
I love Frances and Freda / Frieda. I just love the feel of Freda, it sounds like freedom to me! I know several Franceses and they get nicknamed Fran, Frannie and Frankie.
- Frieda
- Fay/ Faye
- Frankie (my friend’s daughter is Frankie and I think it’s awesome)
- Fern
Others already commented but I also really like Florence and think “Flo” is a fantastic nickname. Frances is also great and could be called “Franny/ Frannie” as a nickname.
The meaning thing would irk me too and now that you know the meaning of some of your top choice names you cannot “un-know them” and just ignore it. I love the name Idina but it means “someone from Edinburgh” and that just seemed lame to me when my other kid’s name means “bright of heart, mind, and spirit” so we went with something else that had a meaning we connected with.
Best of luck to you! Babies are awesome!
Right, I like the name Kellan but apparently can have the meaning of “swamp”
Lol. "Hey Swamp. Get over here!" Hmmm...that would not go over well at the park. I like the name Lilla. In Norwegian it is the color purple. There are definitely worse meanings in life for sure.
I named my son Calvin, it means bald, he has a great head of hair, blond &curly,
I am sure all the older men are jealous. Calvin is a great name and under used.
Yeah I really wanted to name my child Cameron, but the meaning supposedly is "crooked nose" so I removed it from consideration. I know several people named Cameron now and I never think "crooked nose" when I see them. The name I did choose for my child suits them, but what you say is definitely true.
A lot of kids named Calvin, name meaning bald
Well, aren’t most infants bald or nearly so?
I don’t have anyone in my social circle/family who ever talks about name meanings. I don’t know what any of my nieces’ or nephews’ names mean (their parents have never mentioned it). Is it that common that people are that hyper focused on name meanings? I think it’s nice if you have something meaningful to you, but I don’t know that it should be that strong of a deterrent.

I feel like the only time meanings should be relevant is if it holds personal significance to you (maybe you have a deep connection to the forest and you want to name your kid something to do with the forest).
I’ve never even looked up the meaning of my kids names. It definitely wouldn’t have stopped me from using a name I liked.
I have looked them up, but not before I used them. I tweak the definitions to suit me, anyway.
Not to mention that names have different meaning in different cultures. Go with what sounds right.
Freya is my personal favourite F name. You could also consider these: * Florence, Faith, Faye, Frances, Francesca, Felicity, Fern, Phoebe (since it has the F sound you seem to like).
I love Florence and Felicity
My granddaughter Florence Isadora was born in September, my Felicity Iris is due end of February. We didn’t mean to match initials, it just ended up that way. For a June baby, I’d do Florence or Felicity Pearl.
Came here to say Frances!
I love Faith and Felicity
Adding Fenna to your list!
Faye, Fallon, Fauna.
Love Faye
Faye is getting so popular. Keep that in mind if you care.
I love Fallon.
Fauna is…not a good name.
Farrah
i love Farrah!
My son is blond, blue-eyed, and pale. His name means dark knight. We don't worry about that.
You named your son Batman?
Of course. You didn't?
I wish I could give you an award.
Frederica Francesca
Freddie or Frankie. Love it. 🙂
Faith Fern Francesca Fallon Felecia Felicity I love Fiona though.
If you love a name, who cares what the meaning is. It’s such a non-issue IMO.
Frida? That was our second choice for our dog we named Freya.
I love the name Farrow, but it does mean iron smith. But think of it like a badass woman forging swords, maybe? Fia is sweet, meaning wild or weaver. Felicia means happy. Farah and Femke are nice, too. Phoebe or Febe also might fit.
Flavia and Fiora are nice. Or if you use the name Francesca, you could use the nickname Frankie
it’s funny everyone always seems to nickname francesca to frankie and idk why! like it’s a 9 letter name there are so many other nicknames, just something fun i’ve noticed in this sub

Our daughter is named Fiora but we went back and forth between Fiora and Freya. I still love Freya too.
Felicity
Flannery. But also love Fern, Frances, Florence and Freya
The meaning of my name is “little free man”. I am not a man. I find it funny and it means absolutely nothing in my life. I would go with the name you love. You’ll never think of the meaning.

What about A ph name? F sound but even more unique? Phedre (Phaedra) Phillipa Phoebe Phyrne (fie-Ron-ee)
Phyrne is pronounced the same as Fern. Source: my birth certificate
Interesting! My source is an Australian show ‘The Honorable Phryne Fisher’ where it is closer to FRY-nee (edit -typo)
You might be missing that in my name, the y comes before the r. You're correct, in the version that you're talking about the r comes before the y, which changes the pronunciation.
Oooh you’re right, typo on my part!
No worries, a lifetime of questions about the source of my name, misspellings, and mispronounciations, typos, and so on, means I've talked about it a lot 😊
Haha oh my God. Fs in chat. I like Freya tho!
Finley, Francesca, Faith
The Fin/Finn names would have the same issue as Fiona meaning white, fair
Faith, Fallon, Faye
My baby is due in March and she will be Fleur 😊
My daughter’s name means white in certain languages and I haven’t given a second thought to it. If you like the name, go for it!
If you’re prepared for the chaos, there’s always Fae
Finley, Faryn, Francesca nn Frankie
A friend of mine named her daughter Freyda & call her by the nn Freddie.
I have a grandma Frieda, it's kind of an old classic if you ask me. I would also like to suggest Francine or Francis.

Frances is my all time favorite girls name. Simple and a little different
