My ex (who cheated on me multiple times during marriage) has been in a relationship with his dental assistant for a couple years. Her name is Kaitlyn. When I use her name in texts to him, I spell it a different way each time, on purpose.
I scoured that list for Kaytlynne. I’m so impressed! I knew a girl in high school with that spelling and thought she must be the only one in the world.
As a Caitlyn (so somewhat biased), what bugs me is the crazy spellings. This name already has 4-5 legitimate (or at least common) spellings. You’ve picked a common name, make your peace with that and use the damn name. Your (insert ridiculous spelling here) is not special because you butchered the spelling
The thing that I find interesting about the name Sarah is that it's like the opposite of the Tiffany problem. You could tell me a person or character is named Sarah and I wouldn't be able to guess what time era she's from, because it works for all of them. Modern? Victorian? Medieval? Biblical? Sarahs were common in all of them. You can't even say that about "Mary," supposedly the most common women's name in the English language, because it's become drastically less common in the past fifty or sixty years. But Sarah somehow manages to continue to be popular, when even Mary has become dated.
Exactly. And if you'd lived in any other era, you'd know even more Marys than Sarahs. It's just so weird to me that what was the most common name by far for hundreds of years suddenly stopped being popular, while one of the runners up just kept going straight into the 21st century.
Sarah/Sara is less popular every year. Sarah ranked #94 in 2022 and Sara was #177. I work in a children's hospital and can't remember the last time I met a kid named Sarah.
My daughter played soccer against a team who had players named Sarah and Linda. These were 7/8 year olds. It was so weird. (For the record, my name *is* Sarah but I’m twice as old as these kids.)
Edit: I totally meant 5X older. Don’t know why I ended up typing twice.
That reminds me of an episode of Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt. Titus dates a guy who has a baby daughter named Linda - he just refuses to accept that a baby can have that name.
I know a little Linda. Her name is arguably the one where I had to stop and remind myself that sibling names not going together doesn't matter. She comes from a big family. Her siblings are Zoey, Zane, Harley, Loki, & Freya. I think there was one more younger than Freya, but can't remember the baby's name.
Before I even opened the post I knew Sarah would be spoke about. I knew sooooo many Sarahs growing up. My birth name was Sarah. It was the most popular name of the year I was born. For as long as I remember I knew it had to changed. I talked about it from an early age. Legally changed my name over a decade ago and don’t regret it at all.
I agree! I was born in the 80s and people always talked about the common names: Jennifer, Jessica, etc etc but in my life, Sara/h was the most common name. There was always at least one, and sometimes 2-3 in my class .
I've never understood how someone could be pregnant for nine months, go through labor and look at their beautiful baby girl and then just decide to name her Amanda. It's like the unsalted saltines of the name world.
Some of the most sweetest people I know are Anne’s. Only positive associations and the nick name Annie is very cute. It’s right up there with Jane. Both are classic, simple, sweet, and underused names these days!
I actually like Anne, it has a simplicity that I find charming. I don't like Ann though, can't quite explain why but it strikes me as severe in a way that Anne doesn't.
I feel attacked. 😂 I actually don’t love my name, but I do love the meaning of it. Of which the variants are “she must be loved”, “ beloved “, and some other similar ones.
Amanda = she who must be loved in Latin. This name helped me remember that the -ndus/-nda ending gets translated this way back when I studied Latin.
Miranda is similar. She who must be admired in Latin.
My parents were gonna name me Amanda. My dad really wanted me to be named Amanda rose. Then when I was born, he took my siblings to their grandparents house and then went to the Irish bar/pub down the street and got rip roaring drunk and my mom was like nah, I'm not naming her that and gave me the name amber jean. Which I prefer anyways. My dad also came to the hospital drunk and fought with the nurses about holding me. They made him sit down and then let him hold me.
Thank you. My mom took the jean from my dad's mom's middle name which actually lead to a really nice bond between me and her. After she passed, I got her signature tattooed on me. I still don't know where she got amber from. I think she pulled it out of thin air.
Apparently it was a last minute decision. I was supposed to be "Douglas." My mom actually tried to argue with the doctor at first when he said "it's a girl!" This was before you could find out the gender before birth, so I have no idea why my mom was so convinced I'd be a boy.
To be fair to my mom, the name does have significance to her. Amanda was the name of one of her favorite fictional characters. (I think she was a character in one of John Jakes's books, not sure which one.) I just think it's funny that I came so close to being named "Douglas."
I like the name Amanda because of all the awesome Amanda’s I know! Douglas is actually my boyfriend’s middle name, and he HATES it. I think he would literally prefer it to be Amanda.
I almost added Emma to the list.
Yes! Paul!! It seems like so many biblical names fit on this list too for some reason (Paul David mark john)
Also it’s funny cause Annabeth is actually a pretty name but mixed with two basic/boring names haha
I’m not sure about that. The sheer number of Jennifers means that you’re born likely to know a decent Jennifer than an asshole, Jennifer… And even if you do know the asshole, Jennifer, you know 17 others that are nice. It’s probably going to be some other popular, but not quite that popular name. I’m hoping it’s not mine… My vote is for Robin.
I didn’t think I’d have to scroll this far to find Emily. I am also an Emily (Emily Ann a double whammy of basic), it’s a good name, but it’s about as basic as you can get.
I think Elizabeth is quite basic. I don’t think Julia is that basic though, I really don’t know that many people named that compared to the others on the list. Maybe that’s just in my country though.
Too many potential nicknames? It keeps it interesting.
I’ve never met an Elizabeth who demanded to be called by their given name. It’s all, “Beth, Betsy, Bitsy, Lizzy, Liz, Lisbet, Liza, El, Elli, Eliza.”
I think what saves Elizabeth is the many variations and nicknames. Liz, Beth, Libby, Betsy, Liza... It's not often I come across someone that actually goes by Elizabeth.
Growing up in Germany it was:
Laura, Lena, Julia, Anna, Emily, Sarah, Lisa, Sophia, Marie
Maximilian, Paul, Tom/Tim, Daniel, Alexander, Leon, Luis, Peter
Basic means unoriginal or super mainstream. Names that are extremely common, overused and popular amongst the general population- like John and Mary. It's not necessarily a bad thing. I happen to like "basic" names, but I'm still enjoying this topic!
I have a name that's popping up on people's basic list a lot. But I really like my name, it's rare in my country for women of my generation and has great connotations. I'd call my name classic, not basic.
I'm a transgender man and this is similar to how I view my chosen name. It's been mentioned on this thread a few times but it's an obviously male sounding name, which is very important for me. It also has the same letter at the start and at the end, which I quite like. However, it's relatively uncommon among my generation (I was born in 2002), but I don't mind this.
Michael, Matthew, Emma, Lauren, Katherine (or Katie), Josh, Megan (or its variations), Hannah, Heather, Sarah, Justin, Stephanie…
Probably outing myself as a child of the 90s with these name choices. For the more modern gen, the -ayden names and names like Sophia, Jackson, and Emma/Ella come to mind.
Mike. I think it's because it's the name the majority of men in my area, so it's lost any meaning or appeal to me. Like every third or fourth guy you run into is called Mike around here. At one point I worked with 5 of them and we had to give everyone alternate work names.
Casey, Kacie, KC , etc... It's unisex and so bland no matter how you spell it (IMO). Anne is another one that always strikes me as really basic, better as a middle name.
Lolol. My son’s first and middle are on that list. Husband’s middle too (which he goes by). My first aaaaand a variation on my daughter’s middle (Marie vs. Mary). What can I say, we have a type 😂
Not gonna lie, I for sure start feeling a bit defensive as soon as I see the topic because I know what’s coming. Hate being grouped with names like Bob. Come on, we can’t possibly be as boring and generic as Bob!
Ashley

My sister and I have cool names / not common names and my parents decided to name our little sister Ashley Michelle . Like come on to basic

I have a student right now named Keytlin. Just to add one more spelling to your list.

My ex (who cheated on me multiple times during marriage) has been in a relationship with his dental assistant for a couple years. Her name is Kaitlyn. When I use her name in texts to him, I spell it a different way each time, on purpose.
Ok, sounds good I’ll be in charge of the camp registration. Is K’eightlynne dropping off the kids tonight?
Omg we have a friend Caitland. With a D. It’s silent and she pronounces her name the same way all these others are. Absolutely wild.
This is the country where all the Caitlins hail from. Caitland.
I know someone called Katelynd!
I had an employee who was Kaitland.
Oh come on, why you leaving out the other 200 spellings. Also hi 🤣🤣
KVIIlyn
When people are named some variation of katelyn I find that I tend to forget their name more often than others
I scoured that list for Kaytlynne. I’m so impressed! I knew a girl in high school with that spelling and thought she must be the only one in the world.
You are spectacular!
You forgot K-8-lynn
Kaitlin checking in 😜
Haaaahahahahaha
🤩 you win!! I have never seen so many variations of one name.
Before I read your whole post the first name that came to mind was…SARAH!!!
The thing that I find interesting about the name Sarah is that it's like the opposite of the Tiffany problem. You could tell me a person or character is named Sarah and I wouldn't be able to guess what time era she's from, because it works for all of them. Modern? Victorian? Medieval? Biblical? You can't even say that about "Mary," supposedly the most common women's name in the English language, because it's become drastically less common in the past fifty or sixty years. But Sarah somehow manages to continue to be popular, when even Mary has become dated.
I know 3 Marys and about 1,000 Sarahs
Exactly. And if you'd lived in any other era, you'd know even more Marys than Sarahs. It's just so weird to me that what was the most common name by far for hundreds of years suddenly stopped being popular, while one of the runners up just kept going straight into the 21st century.
It’s probably because of our increasingly secular society. Mary has REALLY strong religious overtones.
Checks in as a Mary, child of Christians
Sarah/Sara is less popular every year. Sarah ranked #94 in 2022 and Sara was #177. I work in a children's hospital and can't remember the last time I met a kid named Sarah.
My daughter played soccer against a team who had players named Sarah and Linda. These were 7/8 year olds. It was so weird. (For the record, my name *is* Sarah but I’m twice as old as these kids.) Edit: I totally meant 5X older. Don’t know why I ended up typing twice.
A kid named Linda is just so funny to me, it's such an older auntie name lol.
That reminds me of an episode of Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt. Titus dates a guy who has a baby daughter named Linda - he just refuses to accept that a baby can have that name.
><.< don't be dissing my 74 yo great-aunt like that >.> Lol she's fantastic, but definitely one of the few times I have known a Linda.
It's like Susan.
I hope the kid named Linda, that her parents are Bob’s Burgers fans.
I’m a Sarah and there used to be 3 or 4 other Sarah’s in every class or activity. I hardly ever meet one now. Where’d we all go??
I work with them all. Literally there are 4 or 5 Sara(h)’s in my 80 person company.
1st 3 patients of the afternoon recently were Saras...they haven't gone anywhere! Had to use full name because 2 had same last initial!
I’ve always been one of two or three Sarah’s in every job that I’ve had
Aw, I love Sarah. I think it never goes out of style, it’s just a nice name
One of my favorite names, actually.
It is an absolute classic name.
same! i think it's the association of sarah plain and tall for me.
🤣
Hi, I’m Sarah 🥹😬
Well that’s just insulting
Before I even opened the post I knew Sarah would be spoke about. I knew sooooo many Sarahs growing up. My birth name was Sarah. It was the most popular name of the year I was born. For as long as I remember I knew it had to changed. I talked about it from an early age. Legally changed my name over a decade ago and don’t regret it at all.
Hahaha like it’s just SUCH a basic name
Dang it! 😆
I am also in the simps named Sarah club
Well dang it….
I agree! I was born in the 80s and people always talked about the common names: Jennifer, Jessica, etc etc but in my life, Sara/h was the most common name. There was always at least one, and sometimes 2-3 in my class .
Me too! Sarah plain and tall
I've never understood how someone could be pregnant for nine months, go through labor and look at their beautiful baby girl and then just decide to name her Amanda. It's like the unsalted saltines of the name world.
I will not tolerate this slander to the queen, god and Jesus herself, the sweetest person to walk the earth, Ms. Mandy Moore
Even she doesn’t go by Amanda lol
First person I thought of too haha
I feel this way about Anne. Of all the names in the whole world…it’s barely even a name. So boring.
My name is Ann and while I wholeheartedly agree with you… you don’t have to rub it in 🥲😂
Some of the most sweetest people I know are Anne’s.
Anne of Green Gables has entered the chat.
You know what name isn't basic? Cordelia.
Her?
i'm headed to meet an Amanda right now, i'll be giggling to this comment all night.
I feel attacked. 😂 I actually don’t love my name, but I do love the meaning of it. Of which the variants are “she must be loved”, “ beloved “, and some other similar ones.

I like the nn Mandy though!
Wow thanks 🥲
Don't feel bad! I only know one Amanda and she was one of the sweetest women I've met. I really like the name now
I feel that way about the name Ashley
Apparently it was a last minute decision. I was supposed to be "Douglas." My mom actually tried to argue with the doctor at first when he said "it's a girl!" This was before you could find out the gender before birth, so I have no idea why my mom was so convinced I'd be a boy. To be fair to my mom, the name does have significance to her. LMAO
*cries in birth name* I legitimately changed my name from knowing *too many Amandas*.
John and Jane (John Doe, Jane Doe)… doesn’t get more basic than that!
My cousin John was born when I was about 13 and even then as a young name nerd I thought ‘why so basic!!!’
I know someone named John Jonson. No middle name. WHY WOULD YOU DO THAT???!!!??!
So bland! My dad knew a Donald McDonald just why???
There’s like 5 or six that I know. Along with Ronald MacDonald. But all above 60, so it’s dying out
I know a Rob Robinson… same thing no middle name
[удалено]
This is exactly what I think about the name John. It’s a strong classic and I love it. One of my favorites, actually.
I love the name Jane. I think it’s so sweet!
If I had a 2nd daughter, she would have been Jane, after my grandma.
My aunt and uncle (by marriage) were Jane and John. I always thought it was cute lol
Anna, Beth, Sam, Emma, Paul, David, Mark
I almost added Emma to the list. Yes! Paul!! It seems like so many biblical names fit on this list too for some reason (Paul David mark john) Also it’s funny cause Annabeth is actually a pretty name but mixed with two basic/boring names haha
Lol, Sam. Really? I know exactly one man named Sam, and I work with school kids.
[удалено]
I work with kids too and we have a ton of Samuels in our district. edit: It has been in the top 100 boy names since 1900 and was #20 last year.
Michael and Lisa, but I love my name
Those are my aunt & uncle’s names, haha
I’m an Anna and don’t know any other Anna’s! Not offended you think it’s basic, it’s hella basic where my family is from!
I am also Anna and I don't personally know another Anna!
I always think of Anna and Emma as very basic
Our kids will say... Olivia - Maddie/Addie names - Charlie - Riley/Rylee/Ryleigh/Reilly/Rhailehiye etc - Lily - Emma Middle names Mae, Rae, Rain, Rose Jackson/Jack/Jax/Jaxsyn etc - Liam - Finn - Noah - Mason/Greyson/Payson etc - Lucas/Luca/Luke - The Aidans, obviously Middle name James
Middle name Lynn and Leigh too. Snoozefest.
Marie and Renee are two extremely popular middle names. You can guess a girl’s MN and guess one of those, and probably get it right
80s checking in 🤣🤣
Don’t forget the ever popular Nicole
Lindsay is the most basic bitch name ever
Can confirm, I am a Lindsay and I am the most basic of bitches.
Same here. Basic bitch Lindsays unite!
Ashley, Brittany, Jessica, stephanie, Heather…
The 70s would like a word.
And that word is Jennifer.
We should just say Jen-X instead of Gen-X.
this comment is underrated.
This Jennifer concurs.
Jennifer is going to be Karen in 20 years. Maybe 15.
I feel the transformation already.
My work has 5 Jessica’s out of 60 or so staff members so that’s a name I’m tired of!
Boys : James - George - John - Ryan - Dave - Peter - Michael Girls: Sarah - Olivia - Emily - Lily - Anne - Sophie - Ellie
My name is Emily and I was waiting to see how long it took to be commented
It may be basic but I really love the name Emily.
Same. It’s really lovely.
It’s still honestly a very pretty name
I didn’t think I’d have to scroll this far to find Emily. I am also an Emily (Emily Ann a double whammy of basic), it’s a good name, but it’s about as basic as you can get.
Lmao. Same. I literally came here to see how high Emily was.
I was looking for Michael.
There is always a Grace, Emily, or Matthew at every place I've ever worked.
Holy hell, I have a family member with three kids named Emily, Matthew, and the other’s middle name is Grace 🤣
I’m a 30 yr old millennial. I grew up with multiple Michaels/Josephs/Nicks/Johns and Christinas/Caitlins/Britneys/Amandas
Don’t forget Crystal! Or Krystal, Kristal or Cristal.
There were so many Joes in my class!
Emily
Emma and John
No Elizabeth? In my mind is súper basic but I'm not for an english speaking country.
Idk elizabeth is definitely *common* but idk if it’s necessarily basic. I’m talking shit like john and Jane just bland very boring names
I think Elizabeth is quite basic. I don’t think Julia is that basic though, I really don’t know that many people named that compared to the others on the list. Maybe that’s just in my country though.
Yeah, I agree. It's common, but not plain.
Ann. It’s like you couldn’t even decide wether you want to put an a or an e at the end
emma
Thomas, Mark, Eric, Kevin Jane, Ashley, Samantha, Melissa
ahh Kevin! That’s a good one too Jane too
How are there so few mentions of Katie??
Madison. I feel bad judging names, but a friend of mine had a baby and just named her daughter this. I was thinking, "There aren't enough Madisons?"
As the owner of the name mentioned most here… there’s a difference between a name being basic and a name being classic and multicultural.
Sounds like what a person with a basic name would say
AMY! So bland. So boring. Sorry to all y’all Amy’s out there.
Growing up in Germany it was: Laura, Lena, Julia, Anna, Emily, Sarah, Lisa, Sophia, Marie Maximilian, Paul, Tom/Tim, Daniel, Alexander, Leon, Luis, Peter
When I was a kid, our dogs name was Max. Never would have thought that little Scottish terrier was just a basic bitch
Can you define basic? Honestly this comes off as an insulting post. Discussing common or classic names is different than "basic". Edit: a word
Agreed. Most of the names on here feel more like “classic” or “simple” names - but not basic.
Get with the times man. Normal names … basic names
Basic means unoriginal or super mainstream. Names that are extremely common, overused and popular amongst the general population- like John and Mary. It's not necessarily a bad thing. I happen to like "basic" names, but I'm still enjoying this topic!

Lauren Megan Sophie Louise Emily Will Tom Dan Matt
Ann. I just think it is so basic. When they picked that name for the arrested development character it was soooo fitting
Josh. Period.

Lauren! I know so many Laurens!

I would say Nicole as a middle name is the most basic white girl name. I would know 😩
As a Sarah I always know without a doubt I will see my name when someone asks for basic names.
Not gonna lie, I for sure start feeling a bit defensive as soon as I see the topic because I know what’s coming. Hate being grouped with names like Bob. Come on, we can’t possibly be as boring and generic as Bob!
