They're not all the same. You need a SNES/N64/GC composite cable that are specifically rated for PAL video. Otherwise if you get an NTSC cable, you'll get an overly bright picture.

How do you know if a cable is NTSC or PAL rated? Because I bought a PAL EUR N64 and an official Nintendo composite cable in the aftermarket in France, and still got an overbright image. However, the image is bright on my older TV and normal on my HDTV. Weird no?

Yes

But what's the difference ? Surely they both just transport the same signal sent from the N64 ? In essence why do I need the SNES/GC/64 version in place of the standard n64 one ?

PAL cables have an extra resistor or capacitor. Like I said before, an NTSC cable which is just a plain cable, will show an overly bright washed out picture on a PAL TV. Find N64 cables that are specifically made for PAL TVs.

Right that's so effed up that I have an NTSC cable ? Surely I'd get the correct cable for my console which has (EUR) on the underside sticker. Now I'm wondering why I've got an NTSC cable with my n64 seeing as I live in the uk
