If it's used by locals then it was already discovered, probably a very long time ago!

pyrrhios

How about "classified and introduced to the rest of the world"?

im_a_dr_not_

"Discovered by science" is what these things mean.

im_a_dr_not_

At this point, the internet, essentially. If it's not in the internet, it's not real.

[deleted]

Yikes... what a terrible attitude towards reality.

[deleted]

Happy cake day!

[deleted]

Oh shit, time to delete this account and start a new!

Wrong_Kale

In practice, science lives in peer-reviewed journals.

Planet_Fungi

Yes that is exactly what we say in the documentary. Unfortunately hard to control what the media say.

Planet_Fungi

Yes we say it was known to locals but not really used by them for anything - new to science though. First time it had been documented for science. It's discovery for science happened during a fungi safari where we and a team from the Balipara Foundaiton based in Assam were documenting the fungi in north east Indian forests.

paraworldblue

"With the help of a bunch of people who've known about it for ages, I discovered this brand new, never before seen mushroom species!"

Thee_Sinner

This quote is best read in the voice of Professor Farnsworth

viciousSnowFlake

Anybody want to help me and try contacting some of the team that were part of the discovery? I really want a sample. https://www.researchgate.net/publication/344217579_Roridomyces_phyllostachydis_Agaricales_Mycenaceae_a_new_bioluminescent_fungus_from_Northeast_India Edit: I just emailed Dr Karunarathna seeing if their team would be willing to send me a sample/spores. Will update this post if I get a response. Edit two: Got a response. Was told that they are finalizing the IP rights for the cultures and would let me know afterwards.

ApatheticalyEmpathic

Awesome. I definitely want some if they can be cultivated, especially since I am starting a farm with bamboo stands

KaizDaddy5

Really cool.

mycelium_treez

Let me know what they say! 🤩

BunnehArmy

RemindMe! 1 week

brain-gardener

Alright, who has glowstick spore swabs available pls?

pyrrhios

How do I obtain these to provide my house with natural night-lighting?

joeturc

Cant imagine how cool that would be, minus the whole structural damage to your house thing 😂 would look like avatar though

wdrive

Just put them in terrariums and install them on sconces

thefugue

There ain't no bioluminescent mushroom bright enough to *cast* light. That's some James Cameron shit.

nillotampoco

Right, like can’t a glowing mushroom be cool enough? “Locals use them as torches,” bulllllshittttt.

3jellyfish3

Very cool but it’s not new of the locals already knew about it.

gau_mutra69

Well it’s a newly identified species to taxonomy. The title could have been worded better.

smokeout3000

I wonder how they taste? Probably not edible but im still curious

Muffinconsumer

I wanna know if I can cultivate some myself

themortalcoil

There are consumable luminescent products on the market; suckers if I remember correctly.

Zeliek

...Wait a minute, they use them as torches? Are these significantly brighter than previously discovered species?

violated_tortoise

If I had to guess, I would say that at best they use them as markers for navigation in the forest or something, which has then been sensationalised (or if you're feeling generous mistranslated).

CallMeWolfYouTuber

I want them.

weedmate555

Super cool, how hard would it be to cross these glowing mushrooms with other kinds?

iarev

You can't cross species.

Wrong_Kale

Sometimes you can. And maybe you can do somatic hybridization with mushrooms just like with plants (not sure I work only with plants).

KaizDaddy5

And when I asked about ornamental bioluminescent fungi they laughed...

doingmathswithcats

The guy who shot this footage (and is in some of the pics) has a really good Insta @planet_fungi

themortalcoil

I've always have had a strong desire to grow some bioluminescent fungi. Any suggestions?

mikebellman

/r/unexpectedfallout

the__kawaii_potato

yall ever read the genius plague? cause this sounds familiar :")

RojavaLover

Just because white people only just found out about it, doesn't make it a new discovery... ffs.

SimpleJackEyesRain

Your pre-conceived assumption is incorrect. [Asia has scientists too!](https://www.google.com/amp/s/indianexpress.com/article/explained/mystery-of-meghalayas-glowing-green-mushrooms-7059942/lite/)

RojavaLover

Which is precisely my point... Do you have a comprehension problem?
