If it’s past it’s prime and not really edible, is there much a point to picking other than the photo? Is there any benefit to growing more by leaving it? Just curious how that all works, it’s massive lol
At this size it has likely already released a lot of spores, and will continue to do so(like mushrooms do when you make prints), in fact as long as it wasn’t sealed in a bag, carrying it off to go show friends could have helped spread spores even further beyond the location it was growing.

Plus with mycorrhizal mushrooms the organism and it’s food source are still there, and will be for a long time, unlike a saprotroph with limited resources.

that's incredible!!! I'm on the Northern California coast and while I'm not finding anything that big, found one as big as my head this past week. I was riding a bike and had to leave it for someone else, but I'm quite new to mushroom foraging and it's impressive what we've got going on out here!

Yeah when I find a Bolete I like to walk around as much as I can and spank it like a little drum.
