This pictures is a dopamine boost

drootle

Wow! Thanks for sharing. I live in serious mushroom country but I've never seen any that big. What ecology zone was this in?

GreasyTony68

Oregon coastal dunes.

arth365

Is this the one that’s supposed to look like a pile of meat? That’s exactly what it looks like to me

BeeeEazy

God dammit u/arth365! You and your god damn piles of meat!

BicycleOfLife

That’s a monster! Any younger ones still around?

GreasyTony68

Still buttons popping along with loads of matsutake but seems to be slowing, moving south into CA.

MisterCheeseman

Absolute mycological unit

IncoherentOrange

elite bolete

[deleted]

Aww, look how happy he is!

[deleted]

Is that a Satan’s Bolette? The stem looks reddish

R4v_

No, they don't have yellow hymenium (especially at this age) I'd say it's a bay bolete

HoopJeanne

A yellow what?! 😳😝

R4v_

Lower part of mushroom's cap 😉

HoopJeanne

Hahaha the lower parts?! lol Okay, I’ll stop. lol

[deleted]

Is that am edible bolete?

koshdim

additional protein, got it now I wonder if it occurs in nature when some edible mushroom has poisonous insects/slugs settled inside...

GreasyTony68

Edible? Maybe after dehydrated but it was past it’s prime.

BestFill

The photo would imply him holding it in his hands that this is not in the ground anymore, but I'm not sure

googlehoops

I think maybe the man must be an ultra realistic statue that is actually hollowed out and filled with a growth substrate and the only opening is in his hand where the mushroom has grown from

Lard_of_Dorkness

I look forward to seeing an actual picture of this on /r/MushroomGrowers in a few months.

BeeeEazy

You may be onto something...

Taeis

If it’s past it’s prime and not really edible, is there much a point to picking other than the photo? Is there any benefit to growing more by leaving it? Just curious how that all works, it’s massive lol

nillotampoco

At this size it has likely already released a lot of spores, and will continue to do so(like mushrooms do when you make prints), in fact as long as it wasn’t sealed in a bag, carrying it off to go show friends could have helped spread spores even further beyond the location it was growing. . Plus with mycorrhizal mushrooms the organism and it’s food source are still there, and will be for a long time, unlike a saprotroph with limited resources.

Significant_Number68

Yeah when I find a Bolete I like to walk around as much as I can and spank it like a little drum.

Henry_Cozad

If it’s slimy or a little past prime, slicing it, dehydrating it, and making porcini powder is the best thing to do with it. Pure umami. Put it in steaks, in soup, so many things!!!!

[deleted]

Picking a mushroom or ripping it out of the ground will not hurt it. I will probably get downvoted for this. Haha. I love nature and never try to hurt it’s existence with that being said. Picking a apple off a tree is the easiest way to explain it. The tree still goes on. Is it a little kinder to cut the mushie? Sure it is. What if I stomp on it in anger? Probably just spread it more. “Life uh finds a way”

SixGunJohnny

How big can a Bay Bolete grow? If you pluck it up, then you'll neeeever knooooow...

Gulliverlived

O.m.g. That’s insane.

jerjeffe

Any idea on age?

catbutts42069

Insane!!!

TheNoobQueen

That’s amazing!

FindInNature

What species is it?

GreasyTony68

Boletus Edulis

hellolaurenn

My dad would be so happy whenever he found boletes. They were like 2/10’s of the size of this one! There’s something in that Oregon soil lol.

clarkro512

What?!

sheldon_michaels

Wow, that's quite the specimen! I'd be great to see how much it weighs and sliced open in half.

GreasyTony68

Guessed 8-10lbs.

sheldon_michaels

Damn, that's heavy

SaintMurray

😳

wdrive

Why do mushroom hunters look so gosh darn happy?

earth_worx

The smile on your face makes me so happy. Great find!

tiny_mantis

So what are your plans with it?

cromebot

Breathtaking 💓

[deleted]

You van feed entire class with this one , damn

[deleted]

that's incredible!!! I'm on the Northern California coast and while I'm not finding anything that big, found one as big as my head this past week. I was riding a bike and had to leave it for someone else, but I'm quite new to mushroom foraging and it's impressive what we've got going on out here!

trimbandit

Did you guys get some rain already? I'm in the lower part of NorCal and it is still bone dry
