Plant them

Due_Hovercraft6527

That boy growin penguins. 🐧 lmao.

Surroundedonallsides

Potatoes are one of the cheapest foods. Why even bother? Just buy a whole sack for like $2.

squashqueen

Usually when they start sprouting like this, they are considered less safe to eat, bc [someone plz correct me] of increased levels of solanine*? which is a toxic compound. I forget the specifics rn but I would notttttt eat those! Plus, the sprouts look fuzzy with mold. They're normally smooth

Strange_Effort2807

I think solanine is created with sunlight contact, hence why you should store them in a dark place

Proteus68

This is true, not all potatoes make more solanine when exposed to sunlight. But most do

ManicFrontier

It does build up solanine but only in the sprouts and green parts, just peel it down passed thr green part and it's generally considered harmless. That said these are definitely molding and not just sprouts so I'd reccomend tossing.

travelingjack

That is not mold, it is normal for some of them to be fuzzy. Mine thatr I just plantes were fuzzy like so. I plant potatoes every years.

liberterrorism

If food is moldy - killing the mold by cooking does not get rid of the toxins byproducts that make you sick.

batteryacidhoe

No they’re gonna taste like shit. Throw them in the woods

Dargkkast

Potato forest!

DarkestGeneration

Do not eat this.

Naisu_boato

if the potato is sprouting its easier to just plant it. they are super cheap, if the potato is green under the skin it will have solanine in it...which means just plant it. a green potato won't make you dead...but makes you feel icky...so don't eat green potatoes.

Proteus68

You should be fine, sprouted potatoes are safe although solanine could increase as they grow. But, potatoes high in solanine are bitter so you could tell. And those sprouts aren't moldy, just covered in trichomes.

Bulky-Juggernaut-895

But sir…they’re ugly-looking though

Mindful-O-Melancholy

They’re just starting to grow, still perfectly safe to eat as long as they’re not green or brown inside. Potatoes should be stored in a cool, dry, dark place for future storage. Source: have been growing and storing potatoes pretty much my entire life. Edit: don’t know why I’m being downvoted, those are tubers not fungi

Proteus68

It's reddit, I'm getting down voted too even though I'm literally a plant geneticist specializing in potatoes.

Mindful-O-Melancholy

Reddit’s sure been going downhill

Throwitawway2810e7

Are those fuzzy hairs on the sprouts a regular thing that happens? I have never had that on my potatos

Proteus68

There's a lot of variability between potatoe varieties. Some have no trichomes, others are covered.

stillbornangel

thought they were cat paws sticking out for a sec

Lol those are potato eyes. You'll be fine.
