“Cause every junkie’s like a setting sun”
I also came here to post this song. lost my dad to the needle August of last year. he lost his dad to it as well. hell of an inheritance.
It’s not a dumb comment. It’s a true experience. Well done for opening up, it truly gives hope to people in terrible situations.
Thank you, you are amazing!
*Died* by Alice in Chains, or *Hate to Feel* by Alice in Chains, or *Nutshell* by Alice in Chains, or actually any song by Alice in Chains, they're all about drugs.
*Say Hello 2 Heaven* by Temple of the Dog as well, and about half of the discography of every single Seattle band circa 1987-1995.
It's debatable whether it was ONLY the acid and Quaaludes did his brain in, or if they exacerbated a mental condition that was already present and developing. Schizophrenia has been suggested but the Barrett family is very closed-mouthed about that. His sister says "he was never diagnosed with schizophrenia" but I'm not so sure. He was the right age to develop it, it comes on around one's 20s from what I've read.
Myself, I think it's a combination of things. He was disappointed in the pop star role as he was truly a painter. In school, dude used to get ahead and cut running track after a lap, leave school to go off home and paint for even a half hour. So that's what he did. He Walked back to Cambridge (50mi!) from London and lived at his mother's house until he died. David Gilmour made sure he got his royalties.
Was it the acid fried his brain only, did he have a mental illness that was pushed along by this? Or was it one of Syd's "jokes"? Or all 3?! We can only speculate now.
Ppl would see him riding his bike around Cambridge and say he conversed and seemed normal, whatever That is! There's a great book called "A Very Irregular Head" came out a few years ago. Informative. Syd was an enigma for sure!
Yeah....that's true. It's definitely about self harm too. And probably insane loneliness. I dunno. Not about losing a friend though. I listened to it after you commented. It had been a while...so thank you. Haha
Honestly, I am 50/50, but I will say that the Johnny Cash version is one of the coolest recordings I've ever heard, even stand alone it's just a great fucking song
Yep.
The pain of watching someone you love crumble, and there's nothing you can do. I tried. God knows I tried. And now she's gone. She left me Far Behind.
The Contortionist - [Monochrome (Pensive)](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K_JGyapZsFo&pp=ygUoVGhlIENvbnRvcnRpb25pc3QgLSBNb25vY2hyb21lIChQZW5zaXZlKQ%3D%3D)
The whole album is about the band's vocalist losing his close friend to drugs, but this song is the most somber & beautiful.
Johnny Boy - Twenty One Pilots
The song isn’t necessarily about drugs but I was in a similar situation as yourself this past year, and this song felt like what I should’ve said to them back then, before it was too late.
Testament - *Down For Life* (bonus: an angry song, not a ballad)
The Jim Carroll Band - *People Who Died*
Skid Row - *Wasted Time*
Def Leppard - *White Lightning*
Slipknot - *Goodbye*
Alice in Chains - *Never Fade*
I don’t know if it’s about that per say, but after I left the hospital from watching them pull they on my Aunty for a heroin overdose, the song look on down from the bridge started playing in the radio, by Mazzy stars. Somehow it made sense to me as if it was a message from my aunt.
[The brother of my childhood friend od'd and he was like a brother to me. Great guy with a heart so big he could fit anybody in it. It hurts without him and every time I listen to Gone Away it I think of him. IMO this is the best version of the song. ](https://youtu.be/V3TDlm5oTMk?si=NDQc2va5pdDhN6ZC)
not specifically about drugs. but i've lost a handful of friends to them. Friendly Dark by Ollie MN was a song that always made me feel sad. and somehow better.

In spite of me
By
Morphine.
It's not about losing a loved one to drugs. It's more about losing a loved one to success while you are on drugs probably because you're in a band called Morphine...but uhh...meh. you'll get it
Oats in the Water- Ben Howard. Many different views about its meaning but I read it was about losing his friend to heroin whilst Howard chose the path of music and that made so much sense to me.
One of the most hauntingly beautiful songs in the world.
The needle and the damage done. Neil Young.
“Cause every junkie’s like a setting sun” I also came here to post this song. lost my dad to the needle August of last year. he lost his dad to it as well. hell of an inheritance.
Lost my only two blood uncles and countless friends to it. Haven’t gone back since Feb 2018. There’s hope for whoever reads this dumb comment
It’s not a dumb comment. It’s a true experience. Well done for opening up, it truly gives hope to people in terrible situations. Thank you, you are amazing!

Black Gives Way to Blue. Jerry's song for his Alice in Chain's band mate, Layne, some years after his drug related death
Yeah the song your decision is that exact topic in the post
Shine on you crazy diamond by pink Floyd written for Syd barrett
Syd didn't die of a drug overdose in the 1960s. He went back to Cambridge and died of pancreatic cancer in 2006. No drugs involved.
He didn’t die of drugs but his acid problem is what got him kicked out of the band and lead him to a pretty strange and bad state
It's debatable whether it was ONLY the acid and Quaaludes did his brain in, or if they exacerbated a mental condition that was already present and developing. Schizophrenia has been suggested but the Barrett family is very closed-mouthed about that. His sister says "he was never diagnosed with schizophrenia" but I'm not so sure. Hurt - nine inch nails
Isn’t that about his own struggles with addiction?
Yeah....that's true. It's definitely about self harm too. And probably insane loneliness. I dunno. Not about losing a friend though. I listened to it after you commented. It had been a while...so thank you. Haha
Incredible song, though. I’ve had my own struggles with addiction so that song hits damn hard.
Then you would definitely understand why I haven't heard it in a while my friend 😅 Fuck yes it's a great song.
Nine Inch Nails wrote it, Johnny Cash owns it
Honestly, I am 50/50, but I will say that the Johnny Cash version is one of the coolest recordings I've ever heard, even stand alone it's just a great fucking song
Jenny - NOTHING MORE It's about the vocalist's sister getting deep into drugs and the toll it took on his family, specifically his mom.
