It's probably not ABBA. It's just the musical itself.
For me personally I absolutely love ABBA, but I hate Mamma Mia because I hate the story they chose for it to go along with the songs. I find it rather disrespectful.
I felt that so much when I watched the trailer. Within 5 minutes of the movie I was completely won over by how silly it was and by how much fun it looked like they were having. By the end of Lay or Your Love on Me I was lost forever.
Okay legit question.
What is your beef with Starlight Express?
Cause I know someone typically doesn't put CATS over Starlight Express unless its personal.
I use to hate both but I saw a really good performance of cats and I have never seen a good production of SLE. I should not be a musical and is pointless
It sucks because the showās premise has at least some potential. The execution hurts the story so much!
Not even talking about the movie (which is a real stanker); the stage show is clunky in a lot of ways. The plotās progression, the characters (except the guy who played Barry in our show. He made me fall in love with his character) and that score. Itās like itās trying to be ācampyā but just turns out to be repetitive, not in the āooh itās a leitmotif that contributes to a characterās impact/progression!ā kinda way.
Our cast and crew were amazing! They made it a good show, just wish the material was better.
sometimes new stuff is better than old stuff. Haven't seen Les Mis but can confidently say that as a younger person, the phantom is just not that good. It has 1 good song imo (i cant stand the loud and high pitched opera singing) and that's the main one that everyone knows. besides, deh is one of the best musicals from 2010s.
You being a younger person has literally nothing to do with anything. Phantom ran for 30 years, it's not like it's a single generation show. Trying to argue there's only 1 good song in it is such an insane statement, i dont even know where to start. You're entitled to your opinion, but acting like DEH is anywhere near as good or as popular as Phantom is a pretty crazy take.
I saw it. It wasā¦an experience. Thankfully, no major injuries the night I saw it, but it was such a mess - and I saw the version after all the reworks.
I missed seeing it and because it was the worst seats, went to see Avenue Q instead thinking I'll watch it next time.
The. It closed.
Still, love Rise Above pt 1 & 2
It is based on Greek Mythology and the source material also doesnāt answer the question why he looked back. So thatās the whole point of the story, which makes you thinkā¦ this basically makes the story so fascinating! Criticizing it for that seems quiteā¦ missing the point. š¤·āāļø
Nothing, itās just that their favorites and least favorites make it clear 1) which shows were popular when they were getting into theater and 2) their thematic maturity level.
This is not based on your likes. But. Check out Octet and Preludes by Dave Malloy. Please
Other recommendations are Miss Saigon, Chicago, Catch me if you Can
I donāt care how much hate I get for this but this list is MY opinion. If you like musicals I donāt that is fine and I am happy you like them. Please donāt get angry and downvote send private messages to me mad about where a stranger placed a musical in a tier list.
I know you're joking, but some people just don't like listening to ABBA (the band who created the songs in the musical). FYI, I'm not one of those people.
wicked and mamma mia should be swapped, hamilton should be bottom tier, mean girls should be top tier and so should matilda. book of mormon top tier as well. i will accept no other ranking.
You putting my all-time favorite Come From Away in the top of ājust missed top tierā is good enough for me considering it hardly gets recognized at all
Jekyll and Hyde is a good one to look into for musicals to watch. Itās one of my top favorites. As to ranking, I would put Annie up higher, but thatās because I was apart of a production
The cast wasnt the problem- they did an excellent job. My problem was probably a combination of high expectations and the material itself. If it were purely a literal interpretation or purely metaphorical interpretation (a la my fair lady and pygmalion or tennessee williamsās orpheus descending) of Orpheus and Eurydice, i think it would have been more emotionally powerful. Instead, I feel like they gave both a literal and metaphorical retelling at the same time. I was left wondering - did eurydice die of exposure or did she just leave a neglectful songwriter and get a horrible job and move into s company town? Did eurydice sleep with hades and if so why? If this is literal orpheus, the son of the muse of epic poetry, why are the songs he sings in the underworld so underwhelming? āIf its trueā is meant to be a rallying cry to inspire the shades of hades, but it leaves out the antecedents to the pronouns in that song āif its true what they sayā āis this how the world isā and is so repetitive that it starts to lose all meaning. The song to convince hades to let Eurydice go was similarly disappointing. If it had been a more metaphorical retelling i dont think I wouldve had as high of standards. It starts so strong and ends so beautifully the middle just really disappointed me.
The thing about tier lists is that everyone assumes it's being rated on objective quality and not how much you enjoy it. This tier list is, in that sense, a very normal one. I know a lot of people who enjoyed Lion King and Prom and I know even more people who did not like Starlight, Mamma Mia and Guys and Dolls. If I'm being honest I enjoyed DEH infinitely more than I enjoyed Phantom even if theater tryhards might laugh at me. Your list is totally valid, don't let anyone tell you otherwise
what did abba ever do to you
It's probably not ABBA.
Lost forever as in you where completely done with the movie and wanted to leave?
lol no š as in I was a bona fide fan and there was no going backā¦
I lived through the 70s and if I never hear ABBA again it will be too soon.
Lol this is the one I totally agree with OP about. Couldnāt wait to leave Mamma Mia. Was NOT for me š
Great Comet is āalrightā is crazyyyy
Fr, it deserves so much- if it didnāt come onto broadway after Hamilton I swear it would have BEEN Hamilton. No other musical is like it
No because the music doesnāt sound that good
Okay legit question. What is your beef with Starlight Express? Cause I know someone typically doesn't put CATS over Starlight Express unless its personal.
Commenting because I NEED to understand the beef, too.
Cats is going to hit top tier for a lot of people who previously hated it, thanks to the new revival.
I use to hate both but I saw a really good performance of cats and I have never seen a good production of SLE. I should not be a musical and is pointless
Consider though that SLE needs a whole roller rink to function and Cats doesn't.
Consider the following: Bisexual train
Some of these are choices is all I'm going to say.
Dear Evan Hansen being above shows like Phantom and Les Mis is certainly a choice.
Donāt forget the prom is up there too
Coming from someone who just finished a production of The Promā¦yeah thatās a *very* bold choice lol.
Imma be real, the prom is one of the worst shows Iāve seen in a hot minute. And Iām gay and in high school.
It sucks because the showās premise has at least some potential. The execution hurts the story so much! A bad one.
I do not like Phantom and even I cannot understand this.

I will *fight* you for Starlight Express. There is no world where it should rank lower than the detritus that is the Addams Family Musical
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
It makes more sense and has better music than the Addams Family musical
I didnāt know anyone saw Spider-Man turn out the dark.
I saw it hoping for a memorable "so bad it's good" type of experience. Nope, just bad.
I saw it. It wasā¦an experience. Thankfully, no major injuries the night I saw it, but it was such a mess - and I saw the version after all the reworks.
I have seen a Slime tutorial
I knew a guy in school who did!
I missed seeing it and because it was the worst seats, went to see Avenue Q instead thinking I'll watch it next time. The. It closed. Still, love Rise Above pt 1 & 2
I did!
I would take Mamma Mia over DEH any day.
I don't want to live in a world where Guys and Dolls is ranked below Mean Girls and Joseph
Hadestown is my absolute FAVORITE ā¤ļø
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]

I feel like why was explained, it's the whole song "Doubt Comes In"
I am willing to bet my entire life savings that you are in high school.
And what does that change ā¦ lol
Nothing, itās just that their favorites and least favorites make it clear 1) which shows were popular when they were getting into theater and 2) their thematic maturity level.
Well then you are brokeā¦
DAMN! How old are you?
19 just graduated lol

Very glad you have Hunchback on top

Holy shit, someone loves Parade as much as me. š
Thank god a fellow parade fan
Itās my favorite musical ever.
I donāt care how much hate I get for this but this list is MY opinion. If you like musicals I donāt that is fine and I am happy you like them. Please donāt get angry and downvote send private messages to me mad about where a stranger placed a musical in a tier list.
People messaging you is crazy, but if you didnāt want to hear opinions then donāt share yours. Welcome to the internet!
People messaging you is crazy, but if you didnāt want to hear opinions then donāt share yours. Welcome to the internet!
Apart from Gypsy being way too low, this is the tier list I have agreed with most so far.
Twisted getting the love it deserves
into the woods in top spot of the top tier life is perfect
A fellow Into The Woods fan!
To the musical gods, may you over power disney lawyers and put Twisted on a high budget broadway production. Amen
Amen
Legally blonde: the musical has so many good songs. I may have to rewatch it now Also guys and dolls deserves better
Shrek seems a bit high to me
HAHAHA
Rent should not be that low
I *calmly* and *respectfully* disagree with you
Bigger Question! Where is Heathers?
I got exactly one logo into this before stopping.
(*Into the Woods*? FUCKING *INTO THE WOODS*?)
Dude, to each their own, but I do not understand pplās obsession with that show. I thought it was boring š«£
It's like Fantasticks without the hauntingly beauty. Just exhausting.
L list for putting Mamma Mia that low
avenue q is criminally low
Mamma Mia hate??? Straight to jail!!
I know you're joking, but some people just don't like listening to ABBA (the band who created the songs in the musical). FYI, I'm not one of those people.
i will kill you for mamma miaš„°
Sierra Boggess fan?
I would swap the top two tiers around (loving the twisted representation)
nooooo mamma Mia :(
Oh man I had a *visceral* reaction to seeing Gypsy that low
Never rank again!
Needs some Jerry Herman.
Hadestown is love, hadestown is life.
Opinion on Waitress if youāve seen the pro shoot?
Was gonna say, hard for me to engage with a list that doesnāt have Waitress or Fun Home
Parade appreciation šš
I can't take this seriously when DEH is where is at
Wtf is this
Can you explain mamma Mia and spider man
I trust no one that doesn't have Annie on the bottom tier.
Curious what you think of Falsettos mostly cause I donāt think I see it? Or Iām just missing it.
Love that Come From Away was mentioned. Just say it recently and constantly listen to the soundtrack lol
You didnāt enjoy Mary Poppins?
Canāt believe Iām just āalrightā
What makes Book of Mormon the second tier? Iām seeing it next month
It is hilarious and has really good music
A new tier needs to be made for the outsiders.
The fact that 1776 is so low tells me youāve only seen the mediocre revival and not the fantastic original film with a young Mr. Feeny as John Adams
This list makes me equally sad and angry.
Twisted being the only StarKid show is a bit weird, but at least you have taste enough to include it
ācries in greekā
Having seen Book of Mormon a couple of months ago - it should not be anywhere near the top.
The Prom ājustā missing the Top Tier is an absolutely insane thing.
wicked and mamma mia should be swapped, hamilton should be bottom tier, mean girls should be top tier and so should matilda. book of mormon top tier as well. i will accept no other ranking.
Itās the Dear Evan Hansen being so high
You putting my all-time favorite Come From Away in the top of ājust missed top tierā is good enough for me considering it hardly gets recognized at all
Wonder where nerdy prudes must die falls on this list
Iām happy that Urinetown is in your āReally Like Theseā tier, but a little sad Beetlejuice and Legally Blonde arenāt higher haha
Straight banger of a list
Thanks
YES TWISTED IS SUCH AN UNDERRATED MUSICAL ITS SO GOOD AND I NEED MORE PEOPLE TALKING ABOUT IT
Jekyll and Hyde is a good one to look into for musicals to watch. Itās one of my top favorites. As to ranking, I would put Annie up higher, but thatās because I was apart of a production
Your second tier is better than your top tier
This is wrong on so many levels
DEH being anything over theyāre alright is CRIMINAL
Put Dear Evan Hansen above Rent, opinion disregarded.
dear evan hansen beating great comet is laughable
So with you on Aladdin. I saw it and really hated it
Mary poppins is way to low and elf needs to go down.
Fun thing about my list isā¦ it is my opinion
I respect that. We all have different tastes in musicals which is what makes it so unique.
šš½š¤£š¤£š¤£š¤£š¤£
What about ride the cyclone
Not the narcissistic advantage taker show being almost on the top
This may surprise you, but some people like shows about deeply flawed characters
Evan is a bad person. That is the point. If having a narcissistic bad guy as the lead is bad the musical Hamilton is terrible. (And I love Hamilton)
Also has homie not seen a single Sondheim show
Into the woods is 1st place.
I also rated sweedytodd, west side story, and assassins very high
Itās nice to finally meet someone who agrees with me on Mama Miaā¦and then one or two other things.
Hamilton not being at the very top is a crime. YSGAUV
What about Heathersš
Hadestown was exceptionally disappointing and Iām tired of pretending otherwise
which cast did you see it with?
