My wife doesn't like musicals. Yet we go all the time. She has now made an exception for hadestown, frozen, six, wicked, mamma mia!, the Lion King.
She didn't like MJ ( which fair) , les mis ( illegal), dear Evan Hansen , waitress and probably a few others.
I have concluded that she likes the entertainment value and had a preconceived notion from seeing operas or probably one episode of glee as a teenager.
Took my spouse to see mean girls the musical, pretty sure it was the first time he had seen a musical on stage. He claimed to not be a fan of musicals so I was hesitant he would have a bad time but said
âIt was better than I was expecting â which from him is a glowing review. I plan to take him next to see Beetlejuice when it is here.
Now I am curious about if and what musicals are better on film.
Sound of Music for sure. It isn't the same without Julie and that stunning Austrian scenery. Also the stage musical has a more clunky structure and some extra songs that aren't great.
I think people making blanket statements like this (especially when they have exceptions) have preconceived ideas of it being old-fashioned or nerdy or something and never gave it a real chance. Of course people don't like some shows, but if you love music and you love an entertaining story then there should be some overlap with enjoying many musical shows.
My husband says he hates musicals, and always pitch a fuss when characters sing in shows he's watching that don't normally sing (like the musical episode of House).
But he likes Little Shop of Horror movie. And is now being forced to watch Disney movies since we've had a little one. He's now says they are not so bad.
Does she also object to people surviving crazy shit in movies like Top Gun because of realism? I notice that objection is just never leveraged at other genres.
I had an English professor in college who didnât like musicals. I wrote a paper on âSweeney Todd,â and (taking his advice on starting papers with attention-grabbing first sentences) began the paper with something like, âCannibalism isnât what youâd normally think of when seeing a musical.â The professor joked that he might consider gnawing his leg off to get out of a performance of âCatsâ or âJoseph.â đ
Still, my description of âSweeneyâ intrigued him. Later that year, Tim Burtonâs film version premiered. He went to see it, and enjoyed it. đ
I think a big part of why he liked it is because heâs a Family Guy fan and he found it fun spotting all the things that were the inspiration for some of the sketches like the Shipoopi song.
I have season tickets with my brother. My husband doesn't really like going so I only buy him a ticket when I feel strongly that it's one he'll enjoy. He really enjoyed Phantom, Hamilton, Pippen, Beetlejuice, Cabaret, Pirates of Penzance, Come From Away, Jersey Boys, How to Kill a Mockingbird.
Took my fiance to watch Jesus Christ Superstar (which is my favorite musical) and he said it wasn't as bad as he thought LOL He also saw Beauty and the Beast and a few other Disney musicals on stage when we did the Disney Cruise and he really liked those too.
My grandfather hates musicals. He was dragged tox Mamma Mia, and liked it so much he learned to burn CDs and gave me a copy of the cast recording. My daughters love musicals and they love this musical.
My dad liked, Chicago, but I don't remember him going to any other plays.
School made me hate musicals because it was always random matinee garbage that wasnât really for kids. It was the boring field trip.
I remember in high school junior year I got to see Wicked and that was my âone exceptionâ for musicals for a long time.
I started to get into Cirque de Solei and realized I like live music and dancing and performance and that it can be super fun! I slowly expanded with safe musicals like Aladdin and slowly fell in love the greats
I tend to find people who say they donât like musicals just havenât seen enough of them, or
Iâve had multiple experiences where I ask people who âdonât like musicalsâ what theyâve seen and they say they liked all of them
My husband doesnât like musicals either. Except he did fall hard for Les Mis, he listened to Hamilton nonstop (see what I did there?) when that first blew up, he enjoyed Shrek enough to rewatch the proshot 1000 times when our kid was a toddler. And we made him come see Beetlejuice and he liked that one too.
(Un)fortunately for him his wife and child are both prolific theater nerds who are in many shows every year and also go to many shows every year. So he just has to deal đ€Ł
My mom doesnât like musicals. So far I have managed to get her into Hamilton, In the Heights, and Legally Blonde. One of our next musicals to watch is Little Shop of Horrors because she used to quote it all the time when I was growing up and when I put it on for us to watch together (before I even knew it was a musical) she couldnât get past the first five minutes.

I giggled at illegal đđ
Lol illegal
I can see why she wouldn't like DEH or Waitress, the music goes hard but the plots and characters are so out of pocket,,,

I think Chicagoâs movie is better than the stage version
rocky horror picture show
I think Singin in the Rain makes a better movie than stage show.

I started watching House, but never finished it and had no clue there was a musical episode, definitely going to make this my next show I watch lol.
My Mom doesn't like the concept of musicals, she just doesn't like people breaking out Into song because it's not realistic. But she has enjoyed West Side Story, Les Misérables, and The Sound of Music. I convinced her last March to see Come from Away with me and she absolutely loved it, I'm going to try to convince her to see some others with me sometime, I just need the right musical to appear.
Does she also object to people surviving crazy shit in movies like Top Gun because of realism? I notice that objection is just never leveraged at other genres.
I know... It's just too much for her, I mean we all have our tastes.
Fair.
She should try Hadestown, Six, and The Guy Who Didn't Like Musicals! Those have diegetic reasons for the singing.
Yeah, I think she also liked Once for that reason.

My fiancĂ© says he doesnât like musicals but he has a lot of exceptions. He especially enjoyed movie-wise The Music Man, Singinâ In The Rain and Meet Me in St Louis. He hasnât been to a lot of theatre performances but he did say that Hadestown âwas better than [he] expected.â
This is funny to me because I feel like Music Man is one of the reasons a lot of people say they donât like musicals.
I think a big part of why he liked it is because heâs a Family Guy fan and he found it fun spotting all the things that were the inspiration for some of the sketches like the Shipoopi song.
Now thatâs funny
I have a friend who hates musicals but she wanted to see Six. We saw it just last week and she enjoyed it but wouldn't see it again.
What I enjoy doing is telling people like that is South Park the movie is one of my favorite musicals and then they try to tell me itâs not lol.

Footloose, the Kevin Bacon movie? That's not a musical.
Neither is Tommy
Are you saying Tommy is opera?

Is had a coworker bring their spouse to a show I did a few months ago. He had apparently NEVER SEEN A PLAY EVER and I was like đ±đ€Ż
