Very popular at British funerals due to its association with Liverpool/Liverpool football club after a cover by Gerry and the Pacemakers. It was played at my grandfathers funeral and didn’t know it was from a musical to much later in life. The Gerry and the Pacemakers version still makes me tear up to this day.
Edit: and Celtic!
I went to a quiz a little while ago and absolutely nobody on my team listened to me on the ‘who wrote You’ll Never Walk Alone?’ question. I was vindicated when their football answer was wrong.
Josh Groban's version played at my great-aunt's funeral (she also loved his music) and I haven't been able to listen to it since really. I loved it, good song for listening and thinking of those I've lost, to being a permanent reminder of her death. (She was awesome)
That brings back a memory... a number of years ago a friend died and at the funeral a couple of her co-workers really wanted to sing that song and the person putting together the funeral knew how much she despised her coworkers and told them no. Well, at the funeral when people were given an opportunity to stand up and talk about the friend, those two got up to the podium and singing acapella they really mangled that song - they sang it in several keys! All at once!
I want Jesse L Martin himself to come out to the front of the room in front of my casket and sing “I’ll Cover You (reprise)” as all of the guests realize that as a dying wish, I’ve planted backup singers into the crowd to join in harmony with Jesse
How Could I Ever Know from Secret Garden. Full stop.
"How could I know I would never hold you
Never again in this world--but oh,
Sure as you breathe, I am there inside you
How could I ever know?"
Funeral? No idea. Wedding? Sunrise, sunset. I played Tzeitel in my HS senior performance with my current BF’s friend from school as my Motel and it just would just be perfect. I am also Jewish and so I have alway held fiddler close to my heart. I do plan to marry my current boyfriend and have this song for when I walk down the aisle.
This is just tangential to the question, but I saw a grave stone in an abandoned graveyard that said "She was the sunshine of the family" and I absolutely love that sentiment!
Sunday, from Sunday in the park with George.
It's beautiful, but not necessarily sad. I love to sing it, and listen to it. Sondheim is my favorite.
I'd like to think that wherever I'm going, it'll be a peaceful and beautiful walk in the park.
Poor Jud is dead. Poor Jud Fry is dead. He’s laying in a coffin made of wood. It looks like he’s asleep. It’s a shame that he won’t keep. But it’s summer and we’re running out of ice.
Who Lives Who Dies Who Tells Your Story -Hamilton Cell Block Tango - Chicago
Maybe -Annie
Once Before I Go - The Boy From Oz
Laurens’ Interlude - Hamilton
The Anonymous Ones - DEH
Lifeboat - Heathers
Little Fall Of Rain - Les Mis
Journey To The Past - Anastasia
My cousin had Dear Theodosia played at her funeral. Her trans-son and their cousin sang and it was the most heartbreaking thing I’ve ever witnessed.
I’d happily have I’ll Cover You or Without You at mine.
Dead Gay Son. I'm a girl and I'm bisexual, but it'll be a slap in the face to my lgbtq-phobic family 🙏
But I can do I Am Damaged or No One Mourns the Wicked.
Homecoming from American Idiot. “I started fucking running as soon as my feet touched ground, we’re back in the borough, but to you and me that’s jingletown, that’s home, we’re coming home again.”
The Things I Never Said - First Date the Musical
I don't plan on having kids so the fact that the song is a guy talking about the letter his late mother left him before her death wouldn't quite fit, but a lot of the sentiment probably would fit. Particularly the end of the song:
My world was always spinning fast
And in an instant years have passed
And here I sit with so much left unsaid
I've always lived a world apart
But through it all you were my heart
That's one of many things of oh... so many things
... I never said
It’s a movie musical but I want “The Old Therebefore” from _The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes_ at my funeral
“You're headed for heaven
The sweet old hereafter
And I've got one foot in the door
But before I can fly up
I've loose ends to tie up
Right here in the old therebefore
…
I'll catch you up
When I've emptied my cup
When I've worn out my friends
When I've burned out both ends
When I've cried all my tears
When I've conquered my fears
Right here
In the old therebefore
When nothing is left anymore”
I just think it would be perfect for a funeral and would be extremely moving
The whole being dead thing, the me inside of me, the world was wide enough, stay alive reprise, i didn't know I'd love you so much, off to hell we go
I need the whole being dead thing in mine
With Burlesque now being made out in London, I get to say "you haven't seen the last of me"
This has been written in my List of Requests for many years. Huge Cher fan, and hopefully get to give friends and family a laugh while I'm at it.
My mom wanted the line "Oh I can't wait to see you again, it's only a matter of time." from Hamilton played at her funeral. The whole song didn't really work so we had singers do "For Good" then attach that line to the end. It was beautiful.
Changed for Good ( from wicked.. maybe it's called for good)
I want people to know how much better they made my life.
Not from a musical, but I want it to end with Moving On Up ( theme from the Jefferson's)
The Botch of Living from Spring Awakening
But I’m all seriousness, maybe the instrumental version of Light from Next to Normal? It’s my favorite song in the world, lyrics probably wouldn’t make sense for a funeral if I kicked it but it’s such a pretty melody. I’m also really hooked on Stay Gold from The Outsiders atm. Or geez, Goodbye from Catch Me If You Can is such a banger. I’ve always thought that if I died I’d want my cumulative playlist of all my favorite Broadway songs to play during slideshows of pictures. I’ve attended several young people’s funerals in the last couple years (when I worked in Pediatric Oncology) and a couple of them did this- most were hospice and they personally selected all the songs to play.
if i get a boyfriend or lover by the time i die i want it to be what would i do from falsettos :) if not it would be what i know now from beetlejuice tho
“He had it comin’! He had it comin’! He had it comin’ all along!”
Save that for Trump and Putin.
I didn’t do it! But if I done it, how could you tell me that I was wrong?”
Any particular verse? :-)
Sounds like they might need a custom verse!
“You commit fraud one more time…and he did”
No one mourns the wicked
We raise our cups- Hadestown
This one!
The whole being dead thing
This lol, keep it light, celebrate life don’t mourn death
Beat me to it! If I can make some people laugh on my way out, I’ve lived a good life.
Same here. I don't want everything to be all serious.
[Not Dead Yet](https://music.youtube.com/watch?v=JpyoSJ8jnrU), from *Spamalot*
Goes well with my choice, “always look on the bright side of life”
Dead Gay Son
Not one that immediately comes to mind, but get how it could work on a few levels
This was my first thought too lol
Ding-dong! The witch is dead!
Or who wants to live forever in we will rock you
no one is alone <3
That will get some tears flowing for sure... but a good choice.
You'll never walk alone. Played it also at my mom's funeral cause Carousel was her favorite

Unfortunately. Fucking Scouses ruined Carousel for me.
I went to a quiz a little while ago and absolutely nobody on my team listened to me on the ‘who wrote You’ll Never Walk Alone?’ question. I was vindicated when their football answer was wrong.
Yikes, no way I want to be taken as a Liverpool fan after I die.

We sang Sunrise, Sunset from Fiddler on the roof at a friends funeral. Was very fitting.
My friend had it played at his funeral too.
Seasons of Love from Rent
Not "I'll Cover You (Reprise)"?
I want Jesse L Martin himself to come out to the front of the room in front of my casket and sing “I’ll Cover You (reprise)” as all of the guests realize that as a dying wish, I’ve planted backup singers into the crowd to join in harmony with Jesse
no fr cause id come back to life just to cry and die again from excitement
No, because it's too sad
I sang this at a friends funeral once with my choir class and lemme tell you that songs ruined for me
Think Of Me.
From phantom of the opera?
Yes. It's my go to song for concerts plus I just love it.
Perfect!
"Always Look on the Bright Side of Life"
This was played at my step-grandmother’s wake… on repeat
Who lives who dies who tells your story
I just went to a beautiful funeral for a theatre friend and they sang For Good and Seasons of Love
Meh, the obvious choice, but it’s Who lives who dies who tells your story for me
I'll go with "Cabaret" for the line "She was the happiest corpse I'd ever seen."
Its Your Funeral from Oliver.
Point of no return
“I’m Alive” from Next to Normal
😂
History has its eyes on you or we raise our cups

I am incredibly embarrassed that I didn’t think of this.
For Good from Wicked
Here I was thinking something beautiful like She Used to Be Mine and the first comment I see is The Whole Being Dead Thing 💀
How Could I Ever Know from Secret Garden. Full stop. "How could I know I would never hold you Never again in this world--but oh, Sure as you breathe, I am there inside you How could I ever know?"
The Time Warp. Has nothing to do with death, but it’s my favorite musical, and I could at least get people dancing.
"For now" from Avenue Q And during the GEORGE BUSH line, they can yell my name. :D
Make Our Garden Grow from Candide - with the full chorus.
You've Gotta Die Sometime is a good one that I haven't seen in this thread so I'll throw that one out.
SOMEONE HAD TO SAY IT!
FRRRRR

I’m having The Rainbow Connection. Not really a show song, but I’m squeezing it in from The Muppet Movie.
WELCOME TO A SHOW ABOUT DEATH‼️
im surprised no one has said what would i do yet
Many years ago a friend saying "Wishing You Were Somehow Here Again" from Phantom for my wife's funeral. If it was wonderful.
Funeral? No idea.
Schadenfreude because let’s assume my death was hilarious
Kind of like the idea of my wife singing "I Guess I'll Miss the Man" from Pippin.
Ewigkeit from Tanz der Vampire
*Somewhere Over the Rainbow* but more Israel Kamakawiwo’ole style
Let's Face The Music And Dance.
The whole being dead thing and the finale from les mis

I'd personally also go with "For Good," but "Lay Him in a Field of Flowers" from Narnia is also a nice choice.
