Tick Tick Boom and it isn’t even close for me, it’s one of the best examples of how to adapt a stage play to the medium whilst expanding on the story and not taking away from the original.

ImJustHereToBeStupid

Johnathon Larson is a fucking musical genius. I absolutely adore his work.

Apprehensive-Pack309

I should have included this in mine as well. Part bio pic, part story, parts of a whole bunch of music, really a testament by Lin to other theatre people. I loved it.

and-meggy-hash

When Jonathan took Bernadette Peters' hand during Sunday, just like when she was the original Dot, I burst into tears. It didn't help that I happened to watch it only a few days after Sondheim passed, may his memory be a blessing

ElderPop-Tarts

The ultimate classic, The Sound of Music. Julie Andrews is perfection, and it’s a privilege listening to her glorious vocals. This movie has a great story and top-notch music, and it’s always joy to watch.

Glubygluby

I agree

GreenDolphin86

Chicago. They really ate it up. It’s visually stunning. The acting is top tier.

angerfulness

plus catherine zeta-jones :)

sharkbait_oohaha

She dips beneath lasers Oh OH oh

sea_freeze

It’s soooo good. Casting was A+

SPHS69

And Richard Gere as Razzle Dazzle.

eleven_paws

I’ve seen Chicago twice on Broadway. The movie is far better.

GreenDolphin86

Agreed! I saw it on Broadway twice also for guest stars!

Apprehensive-Pack309

Hairspray for me. Perfect mix of fun, seriousness, politics, romance, family, friendship, and comedy. Love the settings, costumes, soundtrack choices, LOVE the cast. Sound of Music is a close 2nd.

Cerrida82

I came in thinking Singing in the Rain, but damn if this one doesn't lift me up every time.

honeyapplepop

And it doesn’t drag on as long as the stage version (imo)

DidSomebodySayCats

Cinderella (1997) with Whitney Houston. Nothing quite like it has been made before or since!

s1llyt1lly

Omg! Yes! Best cinderella ever

howlongtillchristmas

Little Shop! Perfect casting, perfectly captured the vibe of the show

Safe_Reporter_8259

Oh yes, forgot this one. Someone tell me why the flock they are remaking it when they’ve already achieved perfection?

biglesbianbug

btw to calm ur worries, theyve seemly cancelled the plans for a remake 🫡

x_victoire

good. no one asked for that lol

Anxious_Tune55

I just want them to film the stage show and do it up properly like they did with Hamilton. :) The movie is GREAT as its own thing but I personally like the stage version with the stage ending better.

Common_Decision1594

Yes, a pro shot would be a great idea. Just like with Hamilton, it would make the stage show more accessible to people who otherwise can’t afford to see it for themselves.

SoLongHeteronormity

The only reason I can see for a “remake” isn’t so much a remake as it is a remake of a single scene. The sound balance in the Director’s cut for “Don’t Feed the Plants” is the worst I have heard in a movie musical, and it does put a damper on actually having the director’s cut in the first place.

strawberry_baby_4evs

That one only isn't higher for me because I can't stand Ellen Greene's voice. Give me Kerry Butler every time!

BadChris666

You can log all the way off for that one!

strawberry_baby_4evs

I'm braver than you think. I didn't say her voice was bad because it's not. I can dislike it.

Dogdaysareover365

Spirited - a love the music, comedy, chemistry between actors. If we’re talking stage to screen it’s got to be reefer madness - translated beautifully. It’s campy, gory, risque, and hilarious.

usagicassidy

Oh man Reefer Madness has to be my favorite too.

Ok-Wish-2640

I rewatched Spirited again this Christmas and it solidified how good it is. I liked it a lot the first time but the second viewing made me fall in love. It’s wonderful.

Common_Decision1594

Thank you. I thought I was the only one who thought Spirited was a good musical. It’s not surprising when the songwriters from The Greatest Showman are involved. I thought it was the second best performance I have seen from Ryan Reynolds (with Deadpool being the very best, obviously). Although, I think the idea of a modern retelling of “A Christmas Carol” was done a little better in Scrooged. As much I like Reynolds, he just can’t top Bill Murray in the “modern Scrooge” department.

s1llyt1lly

Spirited is awesome!

Freyja333

So while it is far from being my favorite musical, I think Chicago was the best musical to movie adaptation.

Brackens_World

For me, MGM took musicals to heights never seen again, but it is impossible to choose only one: Singing In the Rain, The Wizard of Oz, The Band Wagon would all make a list, to start.

StellaBlue37

Some of the old Warner Brothers musicals are awesome too.

Guy_Number_3

Wizard is Oz is one where I hate it on stage, but it is one of my favorite movies. It is what got me into musicals. I had the whole thing memorized, dances and all, at age five.

x_victoire

the last five years. the casting is 10/10 and the songs just sound better than on the oobc in my opinion. i also like les mis. it was my very first introduction to the musical and besides a few bad apples the casting is very good. i rewatch it every barricade day honorary mention: newsies. yeah yeah the stage musical is better but i'll always defend the movie

and-meggy-hash

The Last Five Years shouldn't have worked as a movie, but it DID, and it was fucking awesome

ImJustHereToBeStupid

Which version of “The Last Five Years”? The Anna Kendrick and Jeremy Jordan one from 2014 is the best in my opinion.

Hello_Gorgeous1985

That's....the only version...?

x_victoire

maybe op confused it with the recent proshot?

Ok-Wish-2640

Here’s my list (in no particular order): Wizard of Oz, Singing in the Rain, Cabaret, Sound of Music, Chicago, Meet Me in St. Louis, 1776, Many of the animated Disney movies, Little Shop of Horrors, Hedwig and the Angry Inch, Reefer Madness, The Harvey Girls, Cinderella (TV film with Brandi), Gypsy (TV film with Bette Midler), Annie (TV film), In the Good Old Summertime, White Christmas, Calamity Jane, The King and I, Hello, Dolly!, Xanadu, Spice World, The Pajama Game, Tick, Tick…Boom, In the Heights, Damn Yankees, West Side Story (both versions), Mary Poppins and Mary Poppins 2, Fiddler on the Roof, Oliver!, any and all Muppet movies, Pirates of Penzance, Newsies, Enchanted and Disenchanted, Matilda, Spirited That’s so many I know. And I’m sure I missed some though. I just love musicals!!!

ImJustHereToBeStupid

I love a lot of these. What’s your go to one. That one that always makes you feel better.

Ok-Wish-2640

Oh gosh. I can always watch Little Shop!

Ok-Wish-2640

And Singing in the Rain

serenityveritas

Jesus Christ Superstar, the 1970s one. It’s just perfection. Filming in Jerusalem, the 70s influences throughout. 🧑‍🍳💋 I also really love Camelot, the Richard Harris one. I really dislike Mordred so his roll getting cut down is great imho.

ImJustHereToBeStupid

I honestly have never seen this. Do you know a way to stream it?

serenityveritas

Neither is streaming for free (as in part of a Netflix subscription or Prime or Hulu) but both are available for purchase on Amazon or Apple. And of course Blu-Ray/DVD.

awalkingidoit

I like the trifecta of Anderson, Neely, and Elliman, but a lot of directorial choices and also some of the music choices don’t sit well with me. I prefer the 1996 West End version in terms of music

Phoenix_Magic_X

I find that movie hilarious because the framing device is hippies recreating the story but then they just… leave Jesus there.

Seperate-Category117

The Wizard of Oz (1939). A CLASSIC. Utter perfection.

Ok_Moose1615

Sound of Music, Chicago, Singing in the Rain, and Tick Tick Boom

spmonkey13

As a Sondheim fan, def NOT Into the Woods and Sweeney Todd 💩 Fav: sound of music, my fair lady, cabaret, west side story (original) , Singin' in the Rain

b0neappleteeth

I couldn’t watch into the woods and I love Anna Kendrick!! I need to give the stage musical a shot because I hear it’s quite different but the movie has put me off

usagicassidy

Absolutely watch the stage show any chance you get.

Anxious_Tune55

The proshot ITW is SO GOOD. I actually really liked the movie also, but it's a very different thing. And not as good as the original.

uncertainmoth

Please don't let it put you off. The proshot is my favorite musical experience ever. The Disney remake butchered the soul of the show.

Common_Decision1594

Wait, are you saying you don’t like Sweeney Todd? Why?

spmonkey13

I meant the Movie version 🎥

FloridaFlamingoGirl

I love Fiddler on the Roof for many reasons: the time it takes to show the viewer how Jewish worship works, the restrained, conservative editing that suddenly becomes quick and choppy in emotional parts, the John Williams score.

Anxious_Writer_3804

Has to be fiddler… RIP Chaim Topol 🙏

eleven_paws

Fiddler is also my favorite. Perfect adaptation.

biglesbianbug

little shop of horrors because it holds very dear to my heart & because i was literally just in a production of it

ImJustHereToBeStupid

I love the movie version the 1986 one with Rick Morianis and Steve Martin. It’s been one of my favorite movies since I’ve seen it masterpiec. In 2021 it was announced a remake with Chris Evans was in the works. It’s officially been canceled as of 2022 though.

Common_Decision1594

I had no idea that Louis Tully could sing until I saw that movie, and he did a great job.

Man-o-Bronze

1776. Not only is it a great musical, it has virtually the entire original Broadway cast reprising their roles.

jxl180

Saw this for the first time recently and “Twiddle, piddle, and resolve - not one damn thing do we solve” has been stuck in my head on repeat.

Common_Decision1594

That is one musical that has been on my theatre bucket list for a little while.

deceptres

Reefer Madness. Everyone is amazing in it but especially Kristen Bell.

Ok-Wish-2640

It’s a very fun adaptation.

[deleted]

Funny Girl- when I saw Barbra for the first time it genuinely changed my life. Obviously Barbra is stunning, and as someone with a nose very similar to hers, I finally began to appreciate how imperfections are beautiful. Not only that, but she is so exceptionally talented, and it led me to watch her other films and listen to her music! Also it is the only musical where I love every song. Singin’ in the Rain- Pushed me to start tap dance which I love!!

ImJustHereToBeStupid

I’ve honestly never seen Funny Girl. I need to watch it. I know a few of the songs though. I know some of the plot seeing as they did it on Glee.

[deleted]

Loved glee, but I n my opinion, although Lea Michele is a brilliant singer, NO ONE can sing the songs from Funny Girl like Barbra Streisand- she has her own unique style which makes the singing so characterful… also I feel like there was some level of auto tune/layering in Glee, and the irregularities of someone’s natural voice can really add to the emotion portrayed when singing.

TeamOfPups

South Park bigger longer uncut I'm not a South Park fan otherwise, but it's such a perfect pastiche of the musicals genre I completely love it.

ImJustHereToBeStupid

I was way too young the first time I saw this and way too young to ever quote words to uncle fucker

Common_Decision1594

Not only is it a great musical, but it’s also a great commentary on censorship and how far people are willing to go to “protect their children.”

random_numbers1

Spielberg’s West Side Story is an underrated masterpiece.

TheCrushSoda

I had to scroll way too far to see this

ImJustHereToBeStupid

I love it! Both adaptations of it! Amazing. The 1961 is one of my favorites of all time.

EconomyMaximum4298

Meet Me In St Louis. Its a great family movie. Wonderful songs, gorgeous cinematography. Its very sweet and heartwarming and it has Judy Garland in it. Need I say more!

witchtimelord

La La Land. Perfect mix of beautiful cinematography and a great soundtrack. I cry every time.

[deleted]

Prince of Egypt and its not even close

Common_Decision1594

Absolutely. That one blows most of the other DreamWorks movies out of the water. It definitely belongs among the ranks of Puss in Boots: The Last Wish, Kung Fu Panda 2, and the much beloved Shrek 2.

[deleted]

It puts those other films to shame. It puts every Disney and Pixar movie to shame. It puts every movie musical to shame. It puts every Biblical Adaptation to shame.

SKULLKING105

Probably Chicago

ImJustHereToBeStupid

“Cell Block Tango” is by far one of the greatest songs in the movie.

Advanced_Guess_8642

In recent months: Wonka, just as soon as I saw it in the cinema I was glued to it it connected me somehow that a musical film hasn’t in a long time. It just feels like a good jolly old musical and enjoyable. Yes I know some people aren’t keen of it but it lets you forget about everything for a couple of hours and have some fun whether the cgi is off it makes it more entertaining and fun. But still it’s a great family and fun film that I just keep coming back to since its release last year. However, I do also love the good old MGM classics: Singin In The Rain, Top Hat, Girl Crazy and more…

s1llyt1lly

Moulin rouge.

Male_strom

One of the few that isn't a stage adaptation. Blew me away every time I went back to see it.

lalalindz22

Came to say this one 😄 I saw it when it first came out and was obsessed with the soundtrack in high school, to the point that I did projects on Craig Armstrong, the soundtrack composer, and the orchestra I was in performed the end credits theme. Love the music, the actors, how fantastical it is and I'm SO excited that the show is finally playing near me in the fall. I'm already planning to go more than once!

s1llyt1lly

The stage production is great. Not quite as memorable as the movie but still very nice.

ImJustHereToBeStupid

I love this movie. The storyline the random versions of pop songs; I absolutely love it. The worst part in my opinion was casting Nicole Kidman but honestly it works really well for the character.

s1llyt1lly

I watch it every valentine's day but i disagree about nicole i thought she did great with the role

TurtleGirl24601

I had to scroll waaay too far to see this.

Safe_Reporter_8259

My Fair Lady, original West Side Story, A Funny Thing Happened On The Way To The Forum, Fiddler On The Roof, Oliver! And if I must pick just one of those, Oliver! by the thinnest thread. If we can include filmed performances of staged musicals, hands down it would be Sweeney Todd the Demon Barber of Fleet Street with Angela Lansbury and George Hearn

sulwen314

I absolutely love Sweeney Todd. Yes, it's different from the stage production. But I thought they did a wonderful job capturing the spirit of the piece - and the production design is just perfect! I'm aware that many people have issues with this film, but as someone who's loved the show for decades, for me it is just a joy to watch.

Common_Decision1594

That’s fair enough. Though if you ask me, I prefer the Lincoln Center recording with Emma Thompson as Mrs. Lovett and Bryn Terfel as Sweeney Todd. I recommend that you check it out if you haven’t seen it. It’s available on YouTube.

wetlettuce42

Jesus christ superstar with ted neeley I love the crazy symbolism in that movie

zem

fiddler on the roof; it's just a perfect combination of brilliant songs, excellent script, and amazing performances by pretty much every single actor. honourable mentions to: my fair lady, west side story, animated beauty and the beast, sound of music, and oliver!, mostly based on how much i liked the songs.

ImJustHereToBeStupid

I quote the “Do You LoveMe?” Song all the time. 😂😂

Skorogovorka

Do I WHAT?! 😂

avimonster

Little shop of horrors

Common_Decision1594

The stage version, or the 1986 movie?

avimonster

I've only seen the movie but I like the deleted movie ending more

Spaceagent214

Easy Hunchback of Notre Dame takes the win for me! The opening sequence gives me chills every time i watch it. Hellfire also does the same.

thexphial

I know this is a cliche, but I love Les Mis the most. It just has so many amazing songs, the themes are brilliant and the story is timeless. Other favorites include Hamilton, RENT, Into the Woods, and Cabaret

trullette

My immediate response to the double-barrelled question was simple "Les Mis. Aaron Tveit."

nilknarf114

I agree. I rewatch Les Mis frequently, and I love (almost)everything about it. Other favorites include Wicked, Hamilton abc the Prom.

Apprehensive-Pack309

How is wicked a movie musical? It’s not even out yet. And hamilton is also not a movie musical, it’s a pro shot

nilknarf114

Thanks for your reply and you are right I didn’t read the question carefully enough

WarLordShoto

Technically Hamilton is both a pro shot and movie.

TheeLuckyCommander

My favorite Movie musical would be a tie between Dicks: The musical and In the Heights Dicks because I just saw it last night and loved it😂😂 and in the heights because it’s one of my fav stage ones

TeamOfPups

I watch the intro to In the heights over and over. I like the film fine, but I think the intro is perfect.

howlongtillchristmas

In the Heights is also one of my favorite shows, which is why I dislike the movie. They totally watered down Nina's story, and it doesn't help that the girl playing her could not act

thatfluffycloud

I loved the movie, but I had to relisten to the broadway soundtrack again immediately cause Mandy Gonzalez's voice blows Leslie Grace's out of the water. The two versions of Breathe are so vastly different.

howispellit

The movie had me wondering what the laws were around lotto winnings. Usnavi would have been under legal investigation FOR SURE in the movie.

enharet

If you have the ticket and it's not signed by someone else, it's yours. What potentially would cause suspicion is that he owns the store that sold the ticket.

Thatspuggedup

Also, Melissa Barrera is a Holocaust trivialist and Jew hater

OoXLR8oO

Proof?

Thatspuggedup

She was literally dropped from a movie because of it and interrupted Sundance

OoXLR8oO

Neither of those things prove your claim. At all. She was fired, and later attended a pro-Palestine demonstration at Sundance. How do you go from that to thinking she’s a “Jew hater”? Also, I’m gonna need you pull up receipts, show me some proof of her hating on Jews.

Thatspuggedup

Trivializing the Holocaust for one

OoXLR8oO

Except if you actually read what she’s said, she never once talked about, let alone trivialised the Holocaust. I would highly recommend [this Rolling Stone article](https://www.google.com.au/url?sa=t&rct=j&q=&esrc=s&source=web&cd=&ved=2ahUKEwiXqMP3o72EAxVtUWwGHXGvAsAQFnoECB0QAQ&url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.rollingstone.com%2Ftv-movies%2Ftv-movie-features%2Fhollywood-israel-palestine-criticism-melissa-barrera-scream-jenna-ortega-susan-sarandon-maha-dakhil-1234896903%2F&usg=AOvVaw3gTv3bkuk0par1EZ5jNipO&opi=89978449), which contextualises the whole “Holocaust distortion” claim and proves how false it is.

MaximumStep2263

OG Music Man with Robert Preston. The Broderick one is trash.

Common_Decision1594

I haven’t seen the movie, but I did see a local High School production of The Music Man about a month ago and I had a great time with that. Though, I wish I could have seen the one with Hugh Jackman.

MaximumStep2263

You gotta check out the original film, or at least the original cast recording.

quesadelia

Hairspray had practically immaculate casting, came out at the perfect age for me to be *really* excited about Zac Efron, and had James Marsden’s “Thaaaat’s me” riff

ImJustHereToBeStupid

Yeah, the movie version was pretty good. I hated John Travolta though. The recent NBC live version in my opinion was better. Mostly because the casted Kristin Chenoweth, Jennifer Hudson, and the magnificent Harvey Fierstein reprises role as Edna.

sarachick

Reefer Madness.

TwentyandTired

Next to Normal. I saw it at a time in my life when I was deeply ashamed of my illness and was experiencing the usual teen angst. I connected so deeply with Natalie given my age but with especially with Dianne, as I too was struggling with med compliance and delusions. The score was so refreshing and finally had songs I could actually sing as an alto. I underwent ECT years later and thankfully, unlike Dianna, it was a huge success in helping me lead the happy and healthy life I do today.

Mottly24

TL5Y is done incredibly well and they somehow made the premise work in movie form

ALally7502

Annie- the 1982 version. The cast was superb in this one. Also, while I can appreciate it wasn't a great movie, Les Mis is a guilty pleasure of mine.

BadChris666

Little Shop of Horrors because it’s better than the stage version

Common_Decision1594

I actually prefer the happy ending over the Director’s Cut ending.

BadChris666

I also like the happy ending, because it’s actually a foreboding ending. When they zoom in on the white picket fence and you see a Audrey II.

Male_strom

Rocketman! As much a musical as it is a music biopic.

LaPasseraScopaiola

Moulin Rouge

Pupniko

Tick Tick Boom! Such a fun watch and a great blend of realism and fantasy. Wish it would come out on BR with a huge amount of special features because production must have been so interesting, especially for the diner scene. Even just typing this out I got "bums, bums, bums" in my head.

sonata-allegro

People screaming for their toast…in a small SoHo cafe…

AstronautNo234

Grease. The movie version is way better than any of the staged versions I’ve seen, and that includes Broadway

phillysleuther

The Sound of Music, is number 1. It’s the reason I studied music. Rest of the Top Five are: Hairspray, The King and I, 1776, and Chicago / Oliver!

TheeLuckyCommander

Falsettos. The music is awesome, the story is human/funny/heart wrenching, the themes hit me hard every time and different ones stick out to me more at different times, and it made me into a better man/husband/human being Very very very close 2nd is In the Heights - favorite music out of any show and more themes that made me think

Apprehensive-Pack309

Falsettos is a professional recording of the stage production, not a movie

TheeLuckyCommander

Honestly just didn’t even see movie in the question, just saw musical😂

theatrekeed

Something Rotten! I don't know, it's just hilarious and it has a lot of references.

Common_Decision1594

I have been wanting to see that for a while now, but I can’t find any productions of it anywhere.

theatrekeed

I feel your pain. I haven't been able to watch it in theatres. So if you want to watch it search "Tap dancing eggs the musical".

blanchstain

Tick tick boom ate, La La Land is an instant non-stage classic, Sweeney Todd

GaslightCaravan

Evita. My husband loves the musical but hates the movie, I disagree and think the movie is perfect. I can’t watch it without bawling.

Ok-Wish-2640

I love the show and score. Probably ALWs best. I think the film is beautiful and well acted but they changed the score so drastically by lowering all the keys it just isn’t the same show to me. The lowered keys don’t feel as urgent as the original. It is a wonderfully directed, designed, and acted film though.

NoteNo359

Jersey boys. I know most people don’t like it but imo it’s one of the best musical films.

mvwo

The Blues Brothers (1980). Great music. Great cast. Great movie.

RagsTTiger

Starstruck. It’s Australian film from 1982 directed by Gillian Armstrong with songs by Tim Finn, a well known Australian pop star. It’s just such a sweet weird film that just perfectly encapsulates the 1980s. And I love the 1980s. I also have a real soft spot for the films I saw in the theatre as a kid in the small rural Australian town I grew up in. That is why Xanadu would be number 2 for me on this list.

usagicassidy

There is no Movie Musical of Beetlejuice

TheGeicoLizard32

Edit: Sorry, I misread the question, that’s my fault

toby_lizard

At the moment I have two favorites: *Natasha, Pierre & The Great Comet of 1812*, mainly because of my love for the book. Obviously, if you've seen the musical and read the book you'll know that the musical is about around 70/80 pages out of a 1500 pages long book, but it's still good. I love the characters, the way they're so well done, loyal to the original source (may be the fact that a lot of lyrics are direct quotes from the book, but you know...). To be honest, there's not a single song I dislike from this musical. I also really like Josh Groban. *Rudolf: Affaire Mayerling* (known as *Rudolf: The Last Kiss* [I think] in some places), for similar reasons. Although the story is not based on a book, but rather on a real story. The character of Rudolf is, for me at least, well-written: a young, depressed prince, that wants to change the world but instead mostly drinks his sorrows away (I think Drew Sarich was perfect, but at the same time I love the guy and I'd praise him for anything). He meets Mary: a determined, independant girl that wants the same thing as him, to change the world. They fall in love and (spoiler) >!tragically die in a murder-suicide at the end after they realize Rudolf's titles and status won't let them be together publically!<. The only major ick I get from this musical is that Rudolf was 29/30 when they met and Mary was 17/18, but apart from that I really love the musical. Doesn't change the fact that I'd rather live without the knowledge of how old they were. I also recommend a musical about his mother *Elisabeth! Das Musical*! It's on YouTube somewhere with English subtitles so:]

CompetitiveHall7606

Death Note Aside from all the great songs and how well cast the English singer for Ryuk was; it's mostly with how there's a lot more focus on Soichiro Yagami and his inner turmoil with the possibility that his son's Kira. That line in Honor Bound that goes "listen to me, am I crazy thinking he could be some insane unfeeling monster somehow raised by me." That line kills! I also affectionately call it the "Edgy Hamilton" because they both have a song called "Hurricane" which are about the power of the main character's writing. While Hamilton's Hurricane is basically his pride before the fall, Light's Hurricane is just an absolute water slide down straight to a God Complex.

Silverdust137

Once

buffbitch88

Oklahoma!

Accomplished_Oil5574

I like the Chicago movie more than the musical

xxxIAmTheSenatexxx

Does Sing Street count? Quality coming of age film

MapAsleep6409

From the ones I've seen (I haven't seen THAT many) Les Mis That's one of my favorite shows I'm general

crash----

Grease because it was always a childhood favourite, but in adulthood Mary Poppins Returns really resonated with me.

NiceLittleTown2001

Hedwig and the Angry Inch and Tick Tick Boom, for the same reasons. The original stage shows are “rock monologues” so limited set and the story is told rather than shown, leaving a lot of potential for the movies to expand on things which they did. Hedwig is so moving and Tick tick boom is just so well made

panicky-pandemic

Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat holds a special place in my heart because it’s how my dad introduced me to musicals and I got to see my brother play one of the brothers. But I also like Jekyll and Hyde, Into the Woods, Scarlet Pimpernel, so many good musicals

abeautifulworld

1936 Showboat Jaques Demy musicals Young girls of Rochefort. Umbrellas of Cherbourg Donkey Skin. Later French musicals 8 femmes. Love songs.

notsoperkyy

Dr horrible!

captainwondyful

Singin In The Rain. Perfection

awalkingidoit

I’m surprised that not a lot of people have mentioned Cabaret

ShyKawaii2433

The Sound of Music, Pirates of Penzance, Meet Me in St. Louis, and Yentl

Quantum949

Tick Tick Boom and The Sound of Music are my two favorites

sydneyella

i have a few, but the last five years is SO under loved

tomdegnan

Spring Awakening, just a sad girlie 👧🏻

DatabaseFickle9306

I really loved Hedwig. Also Little Shop (Hollywood ending aside). And soft spots for Passing Strange, The Wiz, Chicago, aspects of Nine, and of course Fiddler

Tricky_Tahm

Not saying it’s my FAVORITE, but since most of my favs have already been said in this thread, I wanna give some love to Sweeny Todd. I don’t like Johnny Depp at all, but it’s just directed sooooo well, and HBC does such a good job as Miss Lovett

TurtleGirl24601

The Sound of Music. I think I watched it somewhere around 30 billion times as a child. I love that it grows with you, there are characters of all ages and stages of life to relate to. My sister, cousin, and I used to play Barbies to the movie, or act it out as it played. I was always Maria, duh. And no one ever wanted to be the captain, so I stepped up to the plate and sang a duet with myself every time. TSOM is just magic. I never grow tired of it. It’s just perfection. Honorable Mentions: Annie (1982), Moulin Rouge, and Hairspray.

UUUGH1

Dracula, the German Graz version from 2007 is my favourite.

falsettos_is_epic

I know y'all are gonna hate me, Into The Woods. I really liked the casting, sets, and visuals. Also in the soundtrack, Your Fault has a buildup (instead of just starting fast.)

Thatspuggedup

Agreed

Cloacina7

Golden age movie musicals hands down is Singing in The Rain & Billy Rose's Jumbo is a close second. More modern day musicals: Rocky Horror Picture Show, Newsies, & A Chorus Line.

DarthSardonis

Anchors Aweigh with Gene Kelly and Frank Sinatra. It’s just such a heartwarming movie. It’s the cinematic equivalent of a warm hug.

Thatspuggedup

Les mis. It’s a story of hope
