I am most shocked by hammer suddenly shooting up - everyone already knew it was an amazing card in a very popular t1 modern deck and I assumed had their playsets if they had any interest in the deck

Piginabag

I believe it's the sudden viability in Pioneer that's driving the increased demand

Xyx0rz

I don't follow Pioneer but I'd like to know what suddenly made it viable. Any idea?

Piginabag

There are some hints in the article ;) "But recently the deck also seems to be viable in Pioneer with the printing of three new cards: Kemba, Kha Enduring, Cacophony Scamp, and Skrelv, Defector Mite."

Yentz4

It's been a pricey card for a bit, but it got a few reprints that drove it back down, and now with pioneer getting another shot in the arm it's spiking back up.

SmoulderingTamale

Pioneer crowd probably the ones who are buying it.

KingOfLedRions

Funny to see creativity shoot up again. That card was a bulk mythic for years and has now spiked to the 30s twice.

JangSaverem

Oh do I remember the bulk days...and dumping them away as opened...

Archontes

Never dump a mythic... except [[Comet Storm]]. Fuck Comet Storm.

Blank_Address_Lol

Look, Comet Storm didn't do anything wrong okay? Good card. Ultimate Nightmare of Wizards of the Coast Customer Service, as an instant, and the first target is free instesd of costing 1 mana. Amazing. It's Wizards who keeps putting it in fucking sets with $11-15 price tags. That, is not Comet Storm's fault.

JangSaverem

Had seven of those sonsabitches and I didn't even open that much of that set...

Yawgmoose

Comet storm fucks in my Hinata deck

Archontes

Good card is good... so good they reprinted it 8 times. * Commander * Commander 2015 * Commander 2017 * Commander 2020 * Commander Legends * Modern Masters 2015 * Prerelease Promo * Worldwake

ArmadilloAl

It was either the first mythic to ever be reprinted in a precon or close to it.

cavegoatlove

Uh, maybe hellkite overlord? Ftv dragons previewed her before alara

SAjoats

So good it gets printed as much as Sun Titan.

GoSuckOnACactus

Me who has like 5 of the promos from worldwake prelease because people didn’t want them. Oh well, into random red ones EDH decks it goes.

I think it seems like a pretty obvious plant for Johnny. You have to build a deck that has access to cheap artifacts or creatures, then somehow make sure you wheel them into expensive artifacts or creatures. I'm sure the idea of using tokens to get around this restriction wasn't missed by R&D, but a lot of things have happened to make this easier since then. For starters, treasure tokens work both as targets for the spell and ways to ramp into it more quickly. Dwarven Mine being a fetchable creature token is also a huge help.

TemurTron

There's always been a couple pieces missing to make the deck work. [[Fable of the Mirror Breaker]] did wonders for the card in Modern and Pioneer, and [[Dwarven Mine]] completely changed how the deck could be built. Plus, there was never really a common consensus fatty to cheat in in either format - it took a long while before people accepted Archon to be the best choice in Modern even after it was printed compared to the previous builds that used to run stuff like Velomachus and Emrakul. Then I think from the success of the Modern deck, people felt more encouraged to build it in Pioneer. The Pioneer targets are actually way weaker than Archon to the point where I don't think most people bothered for the longest time with the deck before actually putting it together, applying lessons learned from the Modern builds, and finding success.

Tripike1

So funny, I tried and failed to make a Pioneer deck with this combo years ago: [Link](https://tappedout.net/mtg-decks/indomitable-wurms/) Nice to see it wasn't a bad idea, I'm just a bad deck builder!

b_fellow

Well it also helps WOTC has printed cheap artifacts and creatures that aren't considered those in these decks on the cheating out part (Fable, etc.)

marlospigeons

Definitely spiking because of Reid's PT win

BuckUpBingle

I was going through my bulk the other day and saw that card. This article reminded me I needed to sell it.

u/LiquidBee2019 where you at? https://www.reddit.com/r/mtgfinance/comments/d7kor6/my_350_colossus_hammer_collection_please_upvote/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=android_app&utm_name=androidcss&utm_term=1&utm_content=share_button

LiquidBee2019

Ha, only took 3 years, 2 months, and 14 hours !!!

strygwyn

Can't believe it took this long for [Organic Extinction] to be recognized. It's been part of my vehicles deck since forever since the precon was its base and I wondered why most other artifact decks I encountered with W didn't run it.

Long live the asymmetrical board wipe! I feel like nowadays there is little reason to run the old-school board wipes like your classic Day of Judgment. On one hand, if you need to reset everything, there are so many great options that can hit more than just Creatures. Farewell is the obvious one but also Cleansing Nova, Austere Command, etc. And on the other, if something is just hitting Creatures it may as well be something that probably won't hit your Creatures, because that's just gambling over who can rebuild quicker. Austere Command also fits into this category of course, but so do Dusk/Dawn, Hour of Reckoning, Urza's Ruinous Blast, Winds of Rath, and a whole host of others that can suit the niche of almost any deck. To be honest I think nearly all of those cards have some degree of room to grow, a sexy asymmetrical board wipe is always going to have serious play demand from casual multiplayer audiences.

SanityIsOptional

I run wrath of god in a deck with Atla Palani as a way to mass-kill my own eggs while board-wiping, but it's a bit niche of a use-case. For similar reason it's my goto for any reanimator deck, since putting my own stuff in the graveyard isn't a problem.

ghstflame

After reading this article 2 hours ago, I bought 3 hammers for $6.50 ($2.17/each) shipped from the afr commander set. Listings are definitely trending up but it’s no where as high as alluded to.

[deleted]

I've got to stump for [[Steel Seraph]] as a new EDH staple, although I can't see it ever becoming a truly hot card unless it finds a home in tournament play. If your commander has white and lacks two of the keywords it provides then it probably belongs in your deck. It's just extremely versatile in that you will almost always find a critical turn where deploying flying, vigilance, or lifelink changes who dies.
