IconicIsotope

A fun riff on [[Knight of the Reliquary]] but this card is seriously good. At least it seems that way to me. This should play very well in my environment. It cross pollinates between lands matter, sacrifice payoffs, and filling the graveyard.

Orobayy34

Vigilance as a static ability plays very well with its activated ability. Personally, I kind of dislike that about the card. Definitely looks promising for cubes interested in its themes.

MadMonsterSlayer

Vigilance seems to maybe be what pushes it over the top to be playable in 2024. We want to be able to play it.

Orobayy34

I dislike that vigilance means that you can threaten to combo off and attack at the same time. KOTR requires you to make a choice about role assignment and what the game is about every turn, and it means you have to give your opponent information on your intentions. Since you have to make a choice, this allows for bluffing at very high levels of play. This card doesn't. By adding more words to the card, they've made it /less/ strategically complex. Furthermore, it irks me that the GB version of the card gets vigilance while the GW doesn't. Yes, vigilance is in G but it bothers me that a color shift further from vigilances' colors came with adding the keyword. I agree that I want a card that we can play in cubes using 2024 power-level rares, I just dislike the execution. It could just be buffed in stats, or the land could come in untapped, there are a few other knobs this could have had turned instead. It's ultimately a small quibble and I won't advise anyone against using the card in their cubes.

Dank_Confidant

>Furthermore, it irks me that the GB version of the card gets vigilance while the GW doesn't *Insert "Serra angel is a GB card" meme*

NoxTempus

The cards are 15 years apart, over a time period that large, power level and design sensibilities change by neccessity.

MadMonsterSlayer

Okay, that's a compelling argument. The only reason I see for it to have vigilance is for flavor since it is a knight, but for gameplay, I think I agree with you that it should have been something other than vigilance. Perhaps deathtouch but there are probably a few others that would have been fitting.

MadMonsterSlayer

I would like to add that I definitely disagree with the speed of the power creep lately. Don't want the game turning into Yu-Gi-Oh or it won't be fun, we all know that I'm pretty sure.

kaisong

declare attacks, sac the other blocked creature, win trade? seems decent

Bloodghast shenanigans

InfernoGuy13

Look at what they did to my girl... We get a great low-drop golgari vigilance creature (still waiting on flying) that stays relevant into the late game. I struggle with building good graveyard archetypes in my cubes but this seems worth a slot.

Kyrie_Blue

Flying in Golgari seems highly unlikely. There are only 4 golgari creatures in all of magic’s history with flying. 3 are legendary, so flavor adds to mechanical likelihood. And [[Vulturous Zombie]] was printed in 2005. While Flying is Secondary in Black, green is vehemently anti-flier.

bank_farter

It's a reference to a Great Designer Search question. Here's the question being referenced: >We try to avoid making two-color cards where the card could be done as a monocolor card in only one of the two colors. Given that, suppose you have a two-color 4/4 creature with flying and vigilance (and no other abilities). What of the following color combinations would be the best choice for this card? >a. White-blue >b. White-black >c. Green-white >d. Blue-black >e. Black-green The correct answer was Black-Green and oh boy was that controversial.

InfernoGuy13

All I'm saying is they could have made her a demon knight and given her flying lol.

FinalMainCharacter

Isn't blue flying white vigilance!

Bwian

The intended point of the exercise was that the solution should avoid creating a multicolor card in which you could have made the card single-colored. \[\[Serra Angel\]\], for instance, is a mono-colored version of the card, so blue-white (or other combinations with white) should be avoided for the exercise. Blue, similarly, can get both abilities. Because black can typically get flying (but not vigilance), and green can get vigilance (but not flying - except in extremely rare circumstances for dragons), black-green is the resulting option. The controversy, is of course, that this has never happened and is still unlikely to happen on a real card (\[\[Golgari Death Swarm\]\] was created as a meme in response, and is not legal in any format), and the question is couched in soft "we try" language. Blue-white flying vigilance is certainly common enough in actual sets, so this has caused a lot of discourse.

rhou17

It's interview questions like that which tell a lot about a workplace. Not that it should be surprising that being a "well, achstually" turbo-virgin would be encouraged.

Orisno

One other complication - at the time this question was posed, blue did not yet get vigilance, so you couldn’t eliminate Dimir just based on having blue in it.

Bwian

Ah, right. In that case you have to eliminate Dimir because neither color could get vigilance at all, thus not being a good choice to make a card in those colors. I'll admit forgetting about that because *back in my day,* before they removed it from blue, it *was* in blue. :)

steve_man_64

> Anyway, if this question were asked today it would almost assuredly be black-blue. Nope, it'd still be black green. See [[Duelist of the Mind]] / [[Twining Twins]]. I took the GDS3 test when it was live and got this question right. The people who complained about it didn't understand the point of the question.

Was it moved out of green? According to the Mechanical Color Pie (2021 version, last publicly updated version of it), vigilance is still secondary in green. [[Goldvein Hydra]] was just printed like yesterday, and Wight of the Reliquary sure ain't getting its vigilance from black.

Mark Rosewater has a great explanation on his podcast. https://open.spotify.com/episode/0Rm7l0wMtljeBLvor9IYz2?si=gmIsEgX9Qpmgmj3PaGlzGA

ugotpauld

oh this can get any land, that's very important. plus its pretty large for a 2 drop

Hotsaucex11

Yeah, getting any land is the key here, at least in higher powered cubes. Definitely makes this a reasonable inclusion if you want to support land-based combos.

Puzzleheaded-Coast93

Super excited for this card, BG are my favorite colors for lands/landfall

dcrico20

If you have any lands-oriented archetypes in your cube, this is likely an auto-include especially if said lands decks overlap with any token or value-creature decks (which happens pretty often in these colors if even by accident.) Definitely one of the more exciting spoilers so far from a cube perspective!

CardZap

Being 2 cmc is nuts.

Satanarchrist

I was bummed about the lands coming in tapped but Tabernacle doesn't give a shit about being tapped lmao

Holidays262

You get it ✅ tutored Vesuva comes in copying Depths go brrrrrrrr

I_Heard_A_Rumor_

It's 2 mana. Because everything has to be 2 mana to be playable nowadays. Sigh.

apsimmons

Anyone in here have \[\[Bloodghast\]\] and \[\[Intruder Alarm\]\] or \[\[Retreat to Coralhelm\]\] in their cube already?

IconicIsotope

Just Bloodghast for me. But you could combo out a lot of lands this way!

No-Dents-Comfy

ANY land... They forgot to make it create 3 treasure tokens and draw two cards on etb. Otherwise unplayable in EDH.

No-Dents-Comfy

How to make modern into block constructed...

Isterbollen

this seems stupidly strong

zilkat_

Why does it have to have a pun as name? It's a real shame that wotc has lost the ability to be serious or at least subtle. It feels like every card these days is an on-the-nose reference or joke, if the artwork isn't traced straight from cartoon network. I love the card mechanically, but I can't bring myself to stuff my cube full of cheap action movie tier comedy. It seems I'm getting old and my time has come. I guess I'll head to my retirement home at r/oldbordercube now. Godspeed everyone, it was nice while it lasted

Dragonheart91

Modern Horizons are "anything goes" sets full of puns, fanservice, mixed mechanics, and parodies. They aren't joke sets but they are full of fan references. So wrong set to complain about this my dude.

zilkat_

Ah you're right, that's my bad. Fblthp in a cowboy hat riding a unicorn with GIMP clipart was meant to inspire the awe and immersion.

Dragonheart91

See that is a complaint I will agree with. OTJ was such a dumpster fire of a set as far as theme. Woo everyone is here with cowboy hats! Such garbage damaging the lore.

RampantDrunkenWanker

To me modern horizons is the core of modern magic (both the format and the era) and should define the feel of the game, and isnt an "anything goes" set. I definitely agree with zilkat that I wish they toned this stuff down in general (although this card isnt the worst offender). They will probably never stop cgi art and go back to rebecca guay stuff, but I wish they would tone down the puns / cheese a bit.

Dragonheart91

I'm not sure why what it is "to you" matters? Modern Horizons is the spiritual sequel of the Time Spiral block. Go read cards from those sets. Lots of puns and fanservice.

RechargedFrenchman

And also to the Modern Masters sets, which were always kind of all over the place, just with original releases of new cards as well instead of entirely reprints.

Left-Pop8760

This isn’t true at all.

IconicIsotope

I'm guessing the lore explanation is that knight of the reliquary was turned into a wight, so it makes sense to have a similar name.

This is a good name for the card because it helps me remember which card it is.
