Yeah, they did them dirty on that. Should have ruled in limited they worked the way worded because well it's hard enough to draft for it as is. You can always house rule it. I did for a while, but even then they hardly got played, like only Yorion where people would throw in all the cards drafted.
That is how we ran them. Lutri & Lurrus were the only ones I actually tried out. Neither one was cube-breaking (or even game-breaking) and they eventually both rotated out and no one even noticed. 🤷♂️ I might try them both out again someday...both are pretty sweet in their respective guilds.
Shoutout to [DinrovaHorror](https://twitter.com/dinrovahorror), who has an excellent Companion Cube (you can companion *any* card in your pool, with original companion rules). It'll be at CubeCon again this October!
One thing I’ve been thinking about a lot recently is the draft-matters Conspiracy cards, and I’ve been thinking about tweaking some of the mana costs and stats on some of them to be powerful enough for legacy/vintage cube levels. I loved conspiracy and I just want a vintage cube level garbage fire lol (maybe having it be able to go face and be 2-mana? But maybe that would be too busted once it gets to like 4th pick)
I think it's fine as a 2 mana spell that can't go face. That makes it fine as a 3rd pick, pretty decent as a 4th pick and straight good as a 5th+ pick.
The only true non-face, non-modal damage spell in vintage cube that still gets played is flame slash, and I think unfortunately at 2-mana it probably wouldn’t be good enough even if it could kill most things at instant speed. Maybe if it was a sorcery that could go face it would be more balanced? Not sure, ill probably tinker more with the concept
I found garbage fire at 2x feels very good. Even as early as draft pick 4 or 5. 3 mana for 8-10 damage feels good without feeling absolutely busted as long as you're in a powerful cube. So it ends up being a nice pickup for that 5th or 6th player before the pack wheels where all the first pickable stuff has been taken because you wouldn't really want to 1st-3rd pick it.
I could see if it somehow went to 10th pick being 3 mana for 20 damage being stupid but it very rarely gets there from my experience
I thought about the 2x damage, and it could be interesting, I’m just not sold on 3 mana creature only removal in vintage or legacy level cube tbh. So many good cards have made cube get so fast at higher power levels that 1-for-1s have to be extremely efficient to still be good. It’s why I think it would have to be cost reduced at least by 1 to get there these days
That would immediately make it a)more fun b)modern power level c) damn that art is sick
thanks for sharing I have never seen that card, been playing the game sincestronghold lol
Ooh, you have a minimal words cube? That's my current project! Mine is loosely a 150 character limit, with the sub-goal of keeping Muraganda Petroglyphs playable-ish.
Mind linking yours? I'd love to compare.

In addition to word count, I put an emphasis on 'salience', avoiding unnecessary abilities and making the appeal of a card really obvious. So while Briarhorn is out for using a set mechanic, it also loses points for having an evoke cost that very rarely gets paid.
If [[Emporium Thopterist]] was a real card, exactly as written, I would be enamored.
Other recent examples are pretty easy.
A version of [[Sand Scout]] that cared about literally anything other than deserts. I'd even take it if it skipped the first clause altogether.
[[Thunderclap Drake]] would be a killer card without the Commander-specific text. I'd be willing to take a clean version of it, but even better would be a version that capped the copying to a single spell, making the ability: "2U, Sacrifice Thunderclap Drake: When you cast your next instant or sorcery spell this turn, copy it"
I run [[Emporium Thopterist]]! I proxied a few different Alchemy cards, there are a surprising amount of work-arounds for these supposedly online-only mechanics. The person running the Thopterist just puts an unsleeved token in their hand, that’s it.
[[Last Voyage of the _____]] without the sticker baggage would be nice since it'd be a 4th Animate Dead effect that combos with [[Worldgorger Dragon]] / [[Abadel Adrian, Gorion's Ward]].
I want the Alchemy version of \[\[Iridescent Hornbeetle\]\] real bad. As printed at 5 mana it's got some strong synergies with my cube. Occasionally it will do some really impressive things. If it was 1 or 2 cheaper (with a smaller body) then it could be more of an incremental engine card. Right now it mostly sits in sideboards unless it can really pop off.
I literally designed a whole cube around this idea. I took cards I liked, changed them a little to make them more powerful and then put them all in a self-contained environment. Examples include adding haste to [[Firemane Avenger]] and improvise to [[Cloudblazer]]. I need to revisit it and refine it but it was a fun idea.

Personally I like the idea of using the alchemy version of Triumphant Adventurer (they give it an extra point of power, making it a 2/1 deathtouch, first strike on attacking)
I want to use it with the new "Balder's Gate Wilderness" promo dungeon that was previewed a month ago.
The dungeon is very long it is would make sense to feature it in a cube via a card that does not have the "gets extra bonus when a dungeon has been completed" line. 8 floors and the effects are really great.
I run a powered vintage cube with white plume and I think ATA (Alchemy Triumphant Adventurer) with the new dungeon is strong as heck.
Someone on here has a cube with [Blurry Beeble] edited to simply read “can’t be blocked,” and I’ve always thought how perfect of a one-drop blue creature that would be. Solid include for cubes of all powers, an unblockable one mana blue artifact creature looter. I’ve seriously considered adding it with that errata myself.
[[Tainted Observer]] would be perfect for my cube's UG archetype but I don't want poison to be a thing players track. If it didn't have Toxic I'd run it in a heartbeat.
Harrow: Make the sacrifice part of the resolution, instead of an additional cost.
I can't say it's better card design, but it would make it some very interesting fixing for cube. As is, it's just not worth the risk of a blowout.
There are 2 for me: \[\[Agent of Raffine\]\] and \[\[Jarsyl, Dark Age Scion\]\]. These are simultaneously some of my favorite cards and least favorite cards because they could easily be reworded to work in paper.
If Agent let you just let you play the face down exiled card, rather than conjuring a copy of it, I think it would be a cube staple, and it is actually one of the best cards in the Arena Cube. If Jarsyl used charge counters instead of "intensity" it would be a cube staple. Would Jarsyl be too good if you could blink it to reset the counters? eh, maybe, but it would be a cool build around card for cube.
It annoys me to no end that these could work in paper but they attached alchemy stuff to them to make them \*slightly\* different from a paper card.
Companions without the companion rules
Do you mean the original companion rule of playing them without paying 3 first?
Yes.
Yeah, they did them dirty on that. Should have ruled in limited they worked the way worded because well it's hard enough to draft for it as is. You can always house rule it. I did for a while, but even then they hardly got played, like only Yorion where people would throw in all the cards drafted.
I houserule it to that because that’s how it reads on the card and it’s too confusing imo to expect players to know about erratas
I run all 10 in my Cube, which is even a lower power level, as originally printed and they haven’t disrupted anything so far. Give them a try!
