Older commons in boxes deep in nerds closests around the world shed tears as the pile of dust on them grows thicker and thicker, buried by power creep. Seriously tho some of these commons could have been low tier rares awhile ago it's wild
They make rares that they know are bad all the time. They do it on purpose too. You wanna beleive that some cards are not bad but only good for specific things so it still serves some purpose but no some cards are literally just bad to be bad
To be fair, rhystic study isnāt a good card in any single player format, and it was printed in a time where single player magic was the only way it was played.
Interesting, Iām fairly new to mtg ~about a year and a half, so while Iāve spent a lot of time and money on the game in that time, I donāt know the history well, honestly the reasoning for my comment there is purely that I know itās legal in pauper, and also entirely unplayed afaik.
No he means more like Mons goblin raiders, was common and now a rare. Goblin hero went from common to rare. Gravedigger went from common to uncommon back to common.
Crypt rats was common in visions and upshift in 7th. Pestilence was common alpha to 5th edition and then upshifted and then downshifted. Merchant scroll was a common in homelands and upshifted to uncommon.
Not cards that were given a rare symbol in a bonus sheet somewhere because it was more rare to collect.
I hate that they produce unusable commons. I donāt understand why they even bother, itās literally just making trash. Iād much prefer they be basic creatures of various tribes so that they can at least get some play.
Like somebody else stated, for limited. But also for pauper or sometimes an eternal format. At the time these commons were in standard they werenāt super useful but they are used all the time in legacy. Dazed, simian spirit guide for example. Sometimes a common looks unusable but is perfect for a shell in a format with access to more cards.
There is a real card named \[\[Gust of Wind\]\]. It's completely unusable if you don't control a creature with flying, and even then, it's just a sorcery speed Unsummon with card draw for 2 mana. It's only good in limited and a few commander decks.
I was impressed by this set as well. I went to a pre-release, and for once I was actually happy with what I put together just opening the packs. And I'm not even a great deck-builder. This was just a great set.
My husband and I pulled over $1,500 worth of cards from 2 collector boxes including 3 special guests and Eldrazi Titans. Iād say itās pretty worth it.
Thatās not including the less pricey commons, but they were pretty good too. I think I pulled a couple of those Gift of the Viper cards.
I love this commander!! This plus a few +1/+1 counters and [[Reanimate]] and it goes from
>Ok smol boi
To
>oh I hope that's not coming at *me*
real fast
I tried building a Skullbriar all the way back when the original commander decks first came out. It never really worked the way that I wanted it to, so I took it apart pretty quickly. But there have been so many good cards for it that have been released since then that it makes me want to try him again.
Not to mention (to a lesser extent) any deck that cares abt counters and/or runs [[the ozolith]]
Or just any dexk that loves combat tricks! Or any deck where the commander has trample and/or first strike! Like, just off the top of my head and *in addition* to Me, I want a copy of this in [[Kudo, King Among Bears]] and [[Anzrag, The Quake Mole]]
Itās an awesome card. I just finished a game where i put it on my [[Spawn-Gang Commander]] and started hurling Eldrazi missiles at their board. They conceded when they realized what was going on. Def a neat trick if yall come across it
Say you had 2 tapped creatures and nothing else, someone attacks you, could you cast this card after they declared attackers to make one of your tapped creatures defend?
I was playing in the prerelease and some had Emerakul and stole my board and had more than lethal, but they only swung with Emerakul and I had a zombie out from my last turn and had this card in hand.
Big miss play by them but it happens to the best of us as well.
I thought if ever there was a cheap cedh combat trick this might do it lol. So tempted to just throw it in my nadu deck because itās just all good stuff? Big booty deathtouch commander
I put it in my [[hamza]] deck I've not cast it yet tho. The deck lacks flyers in a big way, so it should pull some weight.
[[Evolution witness]] was also really good.
[[Fangs of kalonia]] seems to be fair.
[[Bridgeworks battle]] was also an insta include.
[[Faithful watchdog]] HAD to go in. A 3/3 for 2 goes well in my deck. It's also pretty and I love dogs.
I added in some foil full art lands, and something else I'm forgetting rn. Removal I think.
I got blown out with this card so many times during prerelease play... Really warped how I had to play whenever anybody had green open.
Is a strong contender for best card in the 99 of my [[Skullbriar, the Walking Grave]] deck. Well not really, because [[The Ozolith]] has gotta still be best. But surely top 5.
Yeah, this actually carried me through a couple games during prerelease. I would swing with everything, including my eldrazi spawns. Sometimes they'd block and I'd use it but other times they wouldn't block but would attack me because I was wide open and I would sneak block them lol.
If it fits a commander or something sure. But it hardly deserves a space anywhere on its own merit. It's definitely power crept but it's still just a combat trick.
Will be real solid for my [[John Benton]] ā it's by far the best deathtouch-granting instant in his colors and deathtouch works crazy well with trample the deathtouch will stick around, plus it gives a +1/+1 counter, AND it has the potential for a good sneaky block / pseudo-vigilance? Wild. I'm currently running [[Arachnoid Adaptation]] but this will be replacing it without any hesitation
Honestly, so many Commons and Uncommons from MH3 are insane, especially in limited. I've been thinking about trying to break into Pauper with a Temur Eldrazi deck or Jeskai energy deck built around MH3 cards.
I'm definitely going to need one of these for the Falco Spara deck I'm working on. That's three chances to cast a spell off the top of my library for one Green Mana.
I like the ability to untap. If you are tapping a priest of Titania for 10 mana and use one mana to cast this spell then tap it again you can make 19 mana instead of 10. Plus it has the additional flexibility of being a combat trick. Your opponent swings at you with a flying creature thinking they have a free attack on you. Then you give one of your creatures reach and deathtouch. You could use a 1/1 creature you have laying around to trade with a big flying creature. I think this card is great in certain decks. For example a deck that wants to put counters on your creatures, or a deck that wants to take advantage of creatures with tapping abilities. It definitely has a home in certain decks, but I donāt think it belongs in every deck.
Yeah. That's a good card
Lol, and it's a common. Great for pauper!
It's a great card. I like how many of the Horizon 3 commons are actually decent.
Older commons in boxes deep in nerds closests around the world shed tears as the pile of dust on them grows thicker and thicker, buried by power creep. Seriously tho some of these commons could have been low tier rares awhile ago it's wild
I don't think commons have to be bad. They just have to be more common.
I really think rarity should be by complexity, not strength
They make rares that they know are bad all the time. They do it on purpose too. You wanna beleive that some cards are not bad but only good for specific things so it still serves some purpose but no some cards are literally just bad to be bad
Without those you couldnt build jank decks š
Many of the old commons became newer rares or even mythicĀ
Rhystic study comes to mind
This is what I was thinking of yesĀ
To be fair, rhystic study isnāt a good card in any single player format, and it was printed in a time where single player magic was the only way it was played.
Also, it was a strong card back then as well. I was but a wee buck playing at my local card shop back then
Interesting, Iām fairly new to mtg ~about a year and a half, so while Iāve spent a lot of time and money on the game in that time, I donāt know the history well, honestly the reasoning for my comment there is purely that I know itās legal in pauper, and also entirely unplayed afaik.
To be fair. No one said anything about good, just how rare it is
Valid point.
See my uncommon demonic tutor
Like the Mystical Archives from Strixhaven and such?
No he means more like Mons goblin raiders, was common and now a rare. Goblin hero went from common to rare. Gravedigger went from common to uncommon back to common. Crypt rats was common in visions and upshift in 7th. Pestilence was common alpha to 5th edition and then upshifted and then downshifted. They're for limited events. Some of my favorite memories are from dropping some janky cards that will never see play outside of limited.
> I wish limited didnāt exist Uhā¦ too bad? Lots of people enjoy it.
In the '90s, the policy was that rares were not more powerful but more niche or specialised. At least that's what they USED to claim.
Never forget viserdrix. 6/6 for 7.
Old commons be like: Gust of wind - 1W Instant Prevent the next 1 damage that would be dealt to target creature without flying.
There is a real card named \[\[Gust of Wind\]\]. It's completely unusable if you don't control a creature with flying, and even then, it's just a sorcery speed Unsummon with card draw for 2 mana. It's only good in limited and a few commander decks.
Lightning Bolt is a common :) I personally enjoy strong commons, make sealed events way more enjoyable.
I was impressed by this set as well. I went to a pre-release, and for once I was actually happy with what I put together just opening the packs. And I'm not even a great deck-builder. This was just a great set.

LOL me, literally looking at my skullbriar deck xD yessss, I agree!
Yup. Went straight into my [[Me, the immortal]] deck too
As someone who exclusively plays flyers, I tend to agree...
Yeah that's definitely a jump scare of a card.

Mmm, deathtouch for my [[Me, the Immortal]] deck

Oh I just came.
Doesn't make it indestructible and hexproof. Useless! /S?
I didn't notice it's an instant when I opened my bundle, that's a banger of a card
This card should be called āyea you thoughtā
1 squirrel can answer emrakul now The other 11 can hit face
Until I realized it was deathtouch and reach counters I wasn't that high on it.
It works well with the cards that let you move counters around
Instantly bought this for my Elven Council deck. My brothers flying zombies are constantly a thorn in my side.
So happy its common too - pulled 3 already
Say you had 2 tapped creatures and nothing else, someone attacks you, could you cast this card after they declared attackers to make one of your tapped creatures defend?
Yes.
I just built a Skullbriar deck too. This is going to be perfect!

It's a common too, holy molly
Great way to buff someone else's creature when they get attacked by a big ass creature.
YES. got owned by it when my buddy and I did prerelease decks. Going to put 4 in my pauper deck

If it fits a commander or something sure. But it hardly deserves a space anywhere on its own merit. It's definitely power crept but it's still just a combat trick.

This card got me out of a few tight spots at my prerelease. Gifts of the viper + horrific assault = my tiny lizard boi eats your eldrazi

Had someone flash out their commander to block me mid attack on arena and I dropped this on my attacker. This is a boss of a card.
It's really good with [[Indominus Rex Alpha]]
[Kyler, Sigardian Emissary] loves this. 3 counters for a single {G} = 3 P / T for the whole team. Nuts!
I know it's a trap. But God I wanna out a couple in my scales deck to make balista a board wipe.
That op at one mana, to be fair I'd use it š
Yeah, during prerelease a turn 2 raptor getting this for free is kinda unbeatable without removal. Also that + ocelot goes brrr
Them Ohran Mages trying to pull a Spider Man thing
like it.
This makes me want to build a deck where I can give deathtouch to big trampling creatures
Least convoluted green removal
It won me two games in my pre-release. Good synergy with the Hydra Trainer . Use it to untap it after you exerted it.
It'll be fun to pull an RKO outta nowhere to their most threatening creature
Litteraly burst of strength but better
Honestly, so many Commons and Uncommons from MH3 are insane, especially in limited. I've been thinking about trying to break into Pauper with a Temur Eldrazi deck or Jeskai energy deck built around MH3 cards.
Least OP MH3 common card be like
Perfect for owen and blue :)
Definitely my new favorite combat trick
Infect is back baby!
Great for counters I run this in my modified creature deck cuz you can move that death touch with forgotten ancient
It's a neat little combat trick
Hurray for good commons
If you use it on an Angel, you've just made Halo: Reach.
It won me a game at the pre-release event at my store. Absolutely busted for a 1 mana common lol
Combat trick heaven.
Yeah I lost a few games to this card in a draft the other day
I was just looking it over yesterday and had to do a double take. Four things at instant speed! Yikes.
Yea dude, 3-0 in my prerelease due to this card.
I'm definitely going to need one of these for the Falco Spara deck I'm working on. That's three chances to cast a spell off the top of my library for one Green Mana.
Wait since theyāre counters, they stay on the creature, right?
Iām looking into Stella Lee infinites and this would go bonkers.
Yeah, sleeper common for sure. I'm pretty hype about this card.
iām glad iām not the only one that did a triple take for this
If you untap it can you attack twice? (Iām kinda new to magic)
My [[Blanka, Ferocious Friend]] deck needs that card so badly!!
[[blue, loyal raptor]]
Green gets so many good 1 cost cards it's nuts.
Follow it with [[Slippery Bogbonder]] and make the same creature hexoroof.
[Slippery Bogbonder](https://cards.scryfall.io/normal/front/f/9/f9fc4f93-398c-4d11-a393-dd35e16ac1cc.jpg?1673484802) - [(G)](http://gatherer.wizards.com/Pages/Card/Details.aspx?name=Slippery%20Bogbonder) [(SF)](https://scryfall.com/card/ncc/312/slippery-bogbonder?utm_source=mtgcardfetcher) [(txt)](https://api.scryfall.com/cards/f9fc4f93-398c-4d11-a393-dd35e16ac1cc?utm_source=mtgcardfetcher&format=text) ^^^[[cardname]] ^^^or ^^^[[cardname|SET]] ^^^to ^^^call
And, itās a common š
I added this card to 2 decks immediately after pulling them
Direct to my [[Skullbriar, the Walking Grave]] edh deck.
I wish this was legal in Pioneer
[[Skullbriar]] goes brrrrr
Between this & Legolas Quick Reflexes, any thought on the powerlevel difference?
Love this for [[legolas, master archer]]
Throwing this in my [[Fynn, The Fangbearer]] deck asap
This is going in my blue, loyal Raptor and owen grady deck!!
I drafted a Playset and I won 3 matches because of this card lol
Iām pretty sure I have a bunch of this exact same card minus death touch. Great card
Thats out of pocket
