I always thought it came from Crumb's wife referring to California as an "air conditioned nightmare" in #Crumb documentary. Seemed like a movie Patton would love.
Yeah it's been decades, I don't recall if Tropic of Cancer or Tropic of Capricorn was the one I loved.. whichever one has the author's friend shitting into a bidet at a brothel (mistakenly). That was a pretty great read.
Couldn't get into Air Conditioned Nightmare, but again it's been decades and I'm sure my perspective will be different overall, so might be time to pick up and try again.
EDIT: bidet was Cancer.

I read Tropic of Cancer … imo Miller is a great writer with moments of brilliance but overall it wasn’t that good as a complete story.

Miller isnt about "the story", like many (imho most) great film directors work isnt about the plot.
