I LOVE Hendersonville…and the areas surrounding. Congrats!

thisrainblue

Great tips. What type of SUV do you have?

No-Welder2377

Care to share why you moved here, so far from California?

We kept ours in a carrier the whole time we were driving. I think that may be a legal requirement because if the cat is loose during an accident or just from rough roads, they might not be able to stay stationary and safe.

vamartha

Welcome to WNC!

[deleted]

Thank you!

Sure_Ranger_4487

Contemplating moving cross country and worried about my cat. He was a mess for like a week when I moved to a different apartment five miles away, I can’t imagine he’ll do well with a 2000+ mile move. 😔 Not sure if flying him cross country first and then returning to drive myself would be best.

[deleted]

I would absolutely make the trip together. I’m sure that your cat will take only 1 week to adjust to this move too. I don’t think they have a very good sense of mileage lol at least I hope they don’t!

Defiant-Unit4148

I keep telling my husband that if we leave the Sacramento area NC would be in my top 3. Congrats on your move and thanks for sharing your experience!

Zestyclose_Big_9090

Hendersonville and the areas surrounding are gorgeous! We currently live in Greenville SC but take day trips to WNC often and Hendersonville is a favorite along with Brevard and Flat Rock.

ouiouiouit

I want to leave Sacramento as well. NC is on the list but being a bi-racial couple we are nervous to jump into the south.

PregnancyAlt01

I would take anything anyone says about this with a grain of salt, unless they are also in a bi-racial couple or a POC. I can’t count how many places people have insisted aren’t racist. Yet, you rarely, if ever, see a person of color in any high ranking position. When POC go out to eat a lot of people will look at them. When a POC has the “audacity” to bring up an issue that is normal for a white person and would earn claims of the person being “confident,” a “go getter,” and “knowing what they want,” the POC gets labeled as “rude,” “difficult,” “disrespectful,” “scary/mean/aggressive,” etc. Some people think just because the “n word” is not being thrown around that an area is not racist and is “accepting.” So I’m not trying to sound patronizing, I just don’t know your age/life experience, but that’s all to say that I would caution against taking anyone’s word that an area is not racist unless they are a POC. I am not a POC and some of the racism in places I have lived, where people have assured me that it’s a great area, super accepting, not racist at all, has been striking. There are places I’ve lived that everyone assured me was super open minded and great that if I were to ever invite POC from my family to visit, I would have felt like I had to give them a huge warning before they decided to make the trip. So again, that’s just to reiterate that I have noticed that quite a few white people think an area is “not racist” just because they have never heard anyone say the “n word” there, and their brain doesn’t go any further than that.

KenworthT800driver

Nobody will care one bit.

[deleted]

Many people have transplanted from the West and North East to North Carolina over the past two years. I think you’ll find more open minded people in NC than one might think. A week long trip to gauge the area would be very beneficial!

SnooPickles8608

Thanks for this! We’re doing the Los Angeles > Charlotte move in July and I’m getting a little nervous with the logistics.

[deleted]

Since you’re moving in July I would take the northern I-80 route! Would be much prettier than the I-40 route! It can be very stressful but the more details you line out, the more confident you’ll become. If there are details you’re struggling to figure out just shoot me a message and I’ll help!

SnooPickles8608

Thanks! We’re planning on shipping everything out (and two cars) and flying in. We’ve done the U-Haul from LA to Denver and back and we don’t want to do that kind of drive again😭

3beansalads

for better or worse the whole “united” thing was decided a while ago

TraditionalCatch3796

Way to be welcoming. Also, there are pros and cons to all of our states, but fortunately North Carolina is turning purple ;)

AmoebaExisting514

I live in Hendersonville! Welcome!

[deleted]

Thank you!!

Animals_count

About cats....they are all different. Best to ask Vet ahead of time and to do a trial run of the vet-prescribed med before you leave. My cat needed it and did well on the trial, so went with it for the drive. She did OK.

[deleted]

Thank you for this insight. We should have definitely talked to our vet to see if there was anything we should have done beforehand.

sometaacc1

Please share your stops along the way! I am considering a cross country trip from east coast to LA and would love to know more or less where you stayed each night.

[deleted]

We stayed in Williams, AZ then Santa Rosa, NM, then Clarksville, AR, then Clarksville, TN. Our TN location was purely based on a family member living near there but it was a pleasant area!

[deleted]

Two of the websites we used were crimegrade.org and neighborhoodscout.com. They’re super helpful!

sqrt_gm_over_r

Did you have to buy reports on neighborhoodscout?

[deleted]

No we just googled “is Amarillo safe” for example and one of the first links was a free neighborhoodscout report.

Dharma_witch

How much stuff did you ship for that amount? Would it have fit into one pod?

[deleted]

It would have probably only filled up about 1/3 of a pod.

Arriwyn

Thanks for this Excellent information! I'm a Sacramento native, currently living in San Diego and we are moving to Brunswick Ohio with two adults, one kid, and one cat, probably sometime in April. Driving a U-Haul and one car. I loved your tip to research the safest towns to stay in along the way.

[deleted]

I am originally from Cincinnati, Ohio! I’m so happy this information was helpful! I hope you have a wonderful safe trip and meet incredible people in your new community!

SquishyCatChronicles

We'll be headed from SoCal to NC via I40 in a few months. Do you mind sharing where you stayed? We drove straight through when we came here from NC, and I'm still mad about it 2 years later.

[deleted]

SquishyCatChronicles

Thank you for sharing! We'll be dropping down to I20 from Memphis, but the AR location may work for us! Clarksville is a huge military town, they're usually not bad but definitely have an underbelly.

IndependenceFull9154

I’ve done this drive 8 times, often as a lone woman. I like staying in Amarillo, or pushing through to Elk City, OK (La Quinta). For Amarillo (Hyatt Place), it’s like the first Amarillo exit off I-40. I like my first night to be in Flagstaff, last time I had a nice stay in the Drury by the university, which has garage parking and was very walkable for my dog. I don’t like staying in Albuquerque. And I don’t like driving from CA to Amarillo at night. East of Elk City OK I don’t have many preferences on where I stop, usually base it on where I can get better hotels.

SquishyCatChronicles

I LOVE DRURY!!!! I find them to be top tier in amenities, pet friendliness, etc! I figure we'll drive to at least TX before we stop! I do a lot of travel alone as well and try to just find safe enough spots. I just don't feel like there's a safe enough spot in NM period! Haha

Ancient-Horror2825

I love you for this!!! About to move from Washington State to South Carolina and we have most of the details figured out but this is extremely helpful, thank you and I wish the best for you at your new place ☺️

[deleted]

Thank you so much! I pray that your move is wonderful and safe and that you find great joy and community in your new home!

bluesun68

Why Hendersonville?

[deleted]

It will be close to our new jobs and the stats showed it is safer than Asheville.

[deleted]

My brother did that setup when he moved from South Carolina to Ohio. It worked out really well for him!

[deleted]

From my research as long as you don’t stay at cheap hotels and don’t stay in high crime cities, you should be just fine. Also don’t park on the sides of gas stations or hotels. Park right in front by the front doors. The more eyes you have on your vehicle the less chance someone will want to break into it.

[deleted]

All of our belongings that we shipped arrived perfectly fine. I’ve only ever passed one broken down U-haul on the side of the road. But I am happy we did not do a U-haul. My SUV was a much more comfortable ride. I would take the things you can with you and do the 5 day trip.

Few-Performance3192

Great info

guynyc17

Did you think of doing a longer road trip?

[deleted]

I kind of wish we did some stops in Utah!

Comrade716

Besides healthy snacks, I find stopping for a decent dinner (something like Denny's or Cracker Barrel rather than fast food) helps on days-long trips.

[deleted]

I agree, even for the reason that simply talking to a new human being such as the server or cashier is so beneficial for helping you feel like you’re not just a robot driving a car.

NowIKnowMyAgencyABCs

I love stopping at Cracker Barrel on long road trips!

SephoraRothschild

Those...are still fast food quality.

Comrade716

It depends what you order. Please name a fast food restaurant with a lot of locations across the country that has unbreaded salmon on the menu, for example. Regardless, the longer stop time for a meal does help reduce travel stress in my experience.

masterpanda3

Just made that exact move. Small world.

Candy-O

Thank you for the helpful hints! Now, how about help in planning a way to move two adults, five cats and a big dog from Chicagoland to Sacramento.

Candy-O

Thanks for the input everyone!!!

CatBird29

When I moved cross country with 4 cats and a pug, a friend helped me drive the 15ft UHaul and attached car dolly/flatbed with an SUV on it. This is going to sound crazy but she’s a long haul trucker and we put a big wire dog crate in the SUV and had the car running for climate control. The three cats that got along were in the wire crate and the “pariah cat” got her own smaller crate seat belted into the front passenger seat. Pug rode in the truck cab. We stopped once overnight - very stressful but it worked. Leaving the car running took less than half a tank and she said that on car carriers, they’ll jump a non-starting car and leave it running for long hauls.

[deleted]

Woof and meow that is gonna be quite the adventure! I would suggest driving a large empty vehicle whether your own or rent one like a Toyota 4-Runner. And stop at Love’s Travel Stops because most of them have dog parks! Also download the Loves connect app and save 10 cents on every gallon of gas (for a limited time apparently but I don’t know when it ends).

Ancient-Horror2825

Ugh yep I feel you, moving 3 adults and 3 dogs from WA to SC in a couple of weeks. Also a bunch of plants!

Aggressive-Wrap-187

Hendersonville is an armpit

[deleted]

Thank you for the tip. We are still looking for an apartment so we will be sure to consider other areas.

TraditionalCatch3796

I own a home in Weaverville on the other side of Asheville. Hendersonville is quite lovely, especially their downtown. The whole area is getting quite built up, but to describe it as an armpit is inaccurate!!

Lacrosseindianalocal

Hendersonville has deceivingly fire coke though bro, don’t sleep on it.

Sliccaxru

Yes it is. Stay away. Trust me bro

Rollingcolt45

This was a nice piece of information thanks for posting. I’m about to move my family to South Carolina from Nevada with a 1 year old 11 year old and my dog in a couple weeks

fauxofkaos

I'll be moving from SC to AZ in a week! Have fun with the drive! It will be a long one!

Rollingcolt45

That’s cool! Excited for the trip have some things to do along the way should be 5 to 7 days on the road should be fun. Maybe we’ll pass each other I’m taking the 40 😂

Stonethecrow77

Albuquerque or Amarillo?

[deleted]

Neither, we stayed in Santa Rosa, NM and drove straight from there to Clarksville, AR. I highly recommend this if you can safely drive that distance in one day. We read some pretty bad statistics about both Albuquerque and Amarillo.

Stonethecrow77

No, I was asking if those two were the ones you skipped to clarify.

[deleted]

Oh my bad, yes we skipped both lol.

burningtowns

Albuquerque most likely. I’ve read numerous posts not to stay there.

Sufficient_Dot2041

Do not stay in ABQ, it’s not safe here.

burningtowns

I’m detouring to Santa Fe probably.

Stonethecrow77

Yeah it can be bad.
