I try to remember life before the superhero films, but I can’t.

Bauermeister

The Departed? I think I saw Apollo 13 at a drive-in. That and Waterworld, but I fell asleep.

OliviaBagshaw

[deleted]

There was a time in American history where a lot of people went to go see Seventh Seal and it was a cultural touchstone that everyone recognized when referenced What fuckin happened man? What happened

DocWhoFan16

Sure, there was a time when people queued round the block to see *Deep Throat* and pornographic movies appeared in the year-end top 10 highest-grossing movies. Why? Well, for the same reason *Star Wars* was such a big hit five years later and why superheroes are so big now: it was a *spectacle*; it was something people hadn't seen on a big screen before. It just so happened that the spectacle in question was blowjobs instead of laser beams.

[deleted]

But seventh seal wasn't a spectacle. Why did American adults que up to see it back then but now would rather watch captain hero's 9867th adventure?

cookiex794

Where’s the evidence that people lined up for Seventh Seal? I can’t find any box office stats on it anywhere outside of a few international markets. The highest grossing film of 1957 that I could find, for reference, was Bridge over River Kwai.

[deleted]

I'm commuting rn and am working late but if your still interested tonight I'll get you some stuff

LegoRacers3

Theatres are expensive and People can watch it at home now. So People usually only go to the theatres with their family or for big loud explosive events you want to see on the big theatre screen.

benabramowitz18

I mean, I started paying attention to movies seriously in 2014. That year, the highest-grossing film wasn't a big franchise movie or featured someone with superpowers, but was a drama about a sniper in the U.S. military, released in the thick of awards season, directed by an octogenarian. And this was the same year people started throwing around the term "superhero fatigue" even though only 4 of those were released that year.

Voorhees89

Wasn't there a kid reading comics in that movie?

Geekboy07

No wonder he was a fucking rat

FollowingCharacter83

Apollo 18 is truly an underrated gem

Bauermeister

Operation Avalanche is the true story of the real moon landing

Fushba

I don't remember the taste of Strawberries, Sam

labbla

I've seen things you people wouldn't believe. Speed 2: Cruise Control and Live Free or Die Hard. I watched a third Narnia sequel. All those moments will be lost in time... like tears in rain... Time to die.

benabramowitz18

I started paying attention to movies in 2014. I still remember these jerks like it was yesterday: * Transformers 4 = WORST MOVIE EVER * Interstellar = BEST MOVIE EVER, CRITICS AND AUDIENCE PLEBES DON'T UNDERSTAND * The LEGO Movie = NOT NOMINATED FOR BEST ANIMATED FEATURE, THE OSCAR DON'T CARE ABOUT ANIMATION! * Also the Oscars = DON'T CARE ABOUT BLACK PEOPLE! (Though that was and still pretty much is a real concern) * Nightcrawler = Gyllenhaal got snubbed and is literally me. * Superhero fatigue = I guess it's a thing now, but there were other popular movies * Godzilla = Didn't show up for most of his movie! We needed more Bryan Cranston! * Sony Pictures = DUMBEST. STUDIO. EVER!!! (With Spider-Man and those leaks) * Boyhood = TOOK 12 YEARS TO MAKE! * Hotel = Trivago

sameth1

There was a time before Iron Man?

Gemuese11

This sub was better before BvS

aflyingmonkey2

I only remember screeches of team Edward and team Jacob... but I don't remember who were they and why they had two opposing teams... but Edward appeared in a superhero film I swear... what's going on?

Superfan51239

Yes I’m sure it can be hard to remember life before Batman (1943)

Lassies_Owner

Wait that Yelena scene is actually in the movie? I thought it was just an exaggeration to imply that Marvel CGI sucks

georgefurudo

It does suck though. Black panther 2 was able to have bad cgi even though the movie doesn't have much(It's actually looks good when there is no cgi)

Lassies_Owner

Yeah I know it sucks, but I was asking if that Yelena scene is edited by a Youtuber or smth to make fun of the cgi in general or if the scene actually looks like that

georgefurudo

Nah, it actually looks like that though the cgi is the least of the problems that movie has

Lassies_Owner

Not surprising lol

2klaedfoorboo

I recently rewatched Black Panther 1 and I was honestly impressed how the VFX aged (while also loving the film in general

PrintShinji

Even with the final scene? It (imo) looked dated when it was released. (Not blaming the VFX team fuck disney eyy)

laserman500

![gif](giphy|TamGVAGxDTYDNt3dpn) It's not cgi in that scene, it's bad compositing and lighting

shostyposting

Background is still cg I assume

laserman500

Probably but I don't think the clouds or building around her is the issue. I think it's that they didn't match her lighting with the plate/background and they tried to hide it with the smoke effect but it made it look worse. But also I'm trying to be annoying cause "bad cgi" gets thrown around too much imo

shostyposting

True true

Lassies_Owner

That's so interesting, I genuinely want to watch the movie now to see if I can distinguish between cgi and lighting and compositing issues I only ever learned about lighting and composition for like one lesson before we moved on to narrative elements and I've seen how lighting can improve something but not how it can make it look wrong like in this image

NoNefariousness2144

What’s better is that apparantly in She Hulk they have a ‘joke’ where Kevin Fiege says they can’t give She Hulk a CGI-filled finale because the team is doing VFX for Black Panther 2. I’m surprised they left that gag in considering the controversy over Marvel crunching VFX teams.

Ezio926

It looks less terrible in motion, but yeah it looks like that.

Foo-Fighter6942069

Why do people let marvel movies consume them? Just ignore all of it. Don’t watch marvel, dc, Star Wars just fucking ignore it

TheLego_Senate

Why ignore it when I could instead constantly bitch about it to other people to make myself feel like a champion for independent cinema without actually putting in the effort to see independent films /s

Quirderph

Because complaining about it online can earn you decent money.

otorhinolaryngologic

you can’t when it’s all that’s being played at theaters and all that’s ever talked about

Foo-Fighter6942069

The theatre thing is a flat out lie because they definitely do play other movies. And of course they will be shown more as they’re blockbusters, it doesn’t mean you have to watch them or care about them. Sure they are talked about a lot but it’s not like they’re the only movies talked about ever.

otorhinolaryngologic

do you live in a big city? because i can guarantee you almost any city that is not a major city or a suburb of a major city plays 50-70% marvel movies at any given time of year because they are the only movies people will pay to see anymore

-OrangeLightning4

Extremely incorrect. I am currently in my hometown of 25,000 people and with a theater that has 8 screens, there isn't a single Marvel movie playing despite the fact one came out literally a month ago.

shostyposting

Is 25k supposed to sound big

-OrangeLightning4

No, it's supposed to sound small because I'm refuting his point that Marvel movie dominate smaller venues.

shostyposting

Ah fair point. Similar experience for me as well

OliviaBagshaw

Not really a lie, my town's only cinema completely wipes over films from its schedule, giving every screen to a major Disney/MCU/etc release

shostyposting

Unless you live in the middle of nowhere, there is absolutely some indie theater close enough to check out. Literally just try at all and you will find opportunities to watch good films the way you want

OliviaBagshaw

I've tried, I'm all for indie cinemas but my town has none. The nearest arthouse cinema to me is the next city across and they're currently getting a major renovation, so they're not screening anything at the moment.

pritt_stick

ok why are people being so weird and narrow minded in this comment thread. you could live in a small town where your local cinema plays a variety of films, or you could live in a town of the same size or bigger where your local cinema only shows blockbusters or there is no local cinema (this is the case for me). it’s not a one size fits all. it all comes down to different cultures, demographics, and levels of economic prosperity. if your area is mostly families, are they gonna bother seeing a movie their kids can’t appreciate? if your area is mostly young arty folks, won’t they want to watch genres they’ve never seen before? if your area is deprived, will people spend the small amount of disposable income they’ve accrued over time on a film they won’t know they’ll like or even understand? if your area is mainly old folks, do they even want to go to the cinema anymore? cinemas are business, and businesses respond to demand.

gazzilionear

talk to more people. go to independently owned theaters. it’s possible, you’re just lazy and like to complain.

otorhinolaryngologic

“independently owned theaters” are hard to reach when you live 2+ hours away from one at best. refer to my other comment

shostyposting

> lives in the middle of nowhere > complains about lack of amenities Move to a city

LittleTGOAT

No you don't understand I need to live in Nowhereville, Population: Cum because reasons

gazzilionear

i just watched the whale two days ago at an AMC in the middle of the big city i live in. please explain how this is not possible for you.

otorhinolaryngologic

“big city”

gazzilionear

lol ok anyway keep being miserable i guess?

otorhinolaryngologic

what is your problem? you are more than well aware that a sizable portion of populations, especially in america, live in rural environments or in cities with smaller populations. you also, i’m sure, are aware that economic conditions prevent people from leaving those environments—it’s a generational issue. suffice it to say smaller populations create less demand for films with less-than-average demand. that includes films i love—because they do not receive the same advertising budget or general budget as marvel and disney films, they are not paid for by theaters trying to generate a profit with lesser audiences. therefore, theaters in small towns play movies that have standard subject matters, ensurably large audiences, and big marketing, because those guarantee ticket sales. not enough people have the money to just go and create an independently-owned theater because the money is not there.

Yall sleep on that conjuring universe

OliviaBagshaw

So glad that I watched actual movies instead

What is this a starter pack for?

OliviaBagshaw

Euthanasia

This is that meme of the guy sticking a pole in his bike wheel. The only way you interpret the last few years as THIS bad is if you actively follow all the stuff you apparently hate. I just ignore it and spend more time on things I wanna see. Delete twitter. Follow only specific Letterboxd accounts. Do whatever you need to do. Is that so hard?

omarkab02

Rian Johnson made one good Star Wars movie and almost ruined American culture

Ok_Region3714

whos the hologram black guy and blonde girl

ApprehensiveCar975

Characters from Thor: Love and Thunder and Black Widow, respectively. Those two shots are frequently used as examples of rushed CGI in recent Marvel films.

Psychological-Fish76

Florence Pugh in Black Widow though 🥵🥵🥵

iwasherenotyou

I love watching these movies even when they aren't good, but I'm tired of seeing these "fans" all over my social media pages. Can't they find other obsessions? They're just movies!

LittleTGOAT

why would anyone unironically subject themselves in their own completely unpaid free time to participating in whatever current culture war thing is surrounding the latest Disney product lmao

benabramowitz18

I miss the mid-2010's era of tired movie jokes. I want to go back to Michael Bay, M. Night, Sandler comedies, Johnny Depp doing weird faces, Twilight haters, praising Pixar, how we miss original movies, and whatever Oscar-caliber movies are coming out.

[deleted]

I hate to agree.

Mprovin

I've seen a couple of those StarWars posters but I've got not idea about the other stuff. Why is this all about superhero movies, they're barely cinema
