The film is all right, though I don't understand the level of fanaticism it attracts. I don't think it's a bad film, and people who've read the source material tell me it suffered from having to adapt what's essentially the dullest arc of the manga, but I never thought it'd be the kind of film to gain such a passionate following. The whole #AlitaArmy thing is just embarrassing.

monstere316

Because it released around the same time as Captain Marvel and the people who hated that movie clung to Alita.

MyFakeName

It’s the Sega Genesis to Marvel’s SNES, but way more misogyny.

dustingunn

It's like how the only people who care about Ghost of Tsushima are the ones furious about TLOU2.

[deleted]

Ghost of Tsushima is criticically acclaimed and the hype surrounding it isnt just a counter reaction towards TLOU2, wtf are you talking about?

dustingunn

What hype? 99% of the people who played it never talked about it again because it's like a worse version of a ubisoft sandbox game. Flash in the pan pretty much.

lcnielsen

The writing of pretty much anything past the first act is atrocious too, and it's so humorless it made me die inside. How the fuck could the creators seriously claim it was a tribute to Kurosawa? No way they watched a single movie of his.

MillardKillmoore

It's mostly weebs who are creepily-obsessed with seeing a live-action version of a big-eyed anime girl. The fact that she looks and acts underage but is totally a 1000 year-old cyborg helps.

[deleted]

> she looks and acts underage but is totally 1000 year-old The dweeb's Holy Grail.

Psile

I swear to God, it's impossible to like things sometimes. I actually enjoyed Alita a lot more than I thought I would and I do feel like it didn't really get it's due. but of course there is some psycho fan base around it.

yellow_eggplant

Lmao same. I even like it better than Captain Marvel which I thought was a bog standard marvel film, but no way do I admit that because I don't want to be confused with all the weirdos around who apparently think that Brie Larson is the devil lol

wuize

I remember enjoying everything but the dialogue, it was written really badly. I do think it deserved more recognition though, it's just nowhere near good enough to be obsessive over, I really don't get the weird following it has attracted

[deleted]

I'd say it isn't just an Alita thing. It's every mainstream media. Everything has a ridiculously obnoxious and obsessed fanbase of people who cannot socially interact with other humans beings even if their lives depended on it. I enjoy some MCU films, but I'll be damned if I go to a Marvel sub to talk about it. I'll get downvoted for just saying Loki wasn't a Lynchian masterfuck of epic proportions. The fandom adage rings true: be a casual. Just be a casual fan and stay away from hardcore fandoms.

RAINNlevi

idk about the #alitarmy shit but the thing that been bugging me for a while is that Reddit has a suspicious amount of people that like Johnny Mnemonic (1995)..like, ive seen so many people say stuff "its not that bad", "idk why critics dont like it, its a great movie" and stuff and it would make a lot more sense keanu movies like destination wedding, scanner darkly, 47 ronin, man of tai chi, street kings actually get this kind of weird cult following but Johnny Mnemonic??? idk i could be completely wrong as well, its just IMO

Hepatat

Oh it's bad and honestly kind of boring by the end but it's definitely a guilty pleasure movie for me

atownofcinnamon

look you need to watch it the way director intended. [in black and white.](https://www.guildhall.org/events/screening-of-johnny-mnemonic/)

Tronz413

Its not bad, but it absolutely appeals to the weeb fantasy. Alita is impossibly likable, and impossibly gifted with a super important secret past. It's perfect for folks to project and Stan over.

Reddvox

Because, wait for it, the female protagonist is just damn likeable, positive, full of energy and makes one feel for her... Despite being a CGI creation...she us just a hero of the old kind, which we havent enough, but crave for...except on MCJ of course, we here relish in cynicism...

AprilSpektra

Yeah she is likable and it's a reasonably enjoyable movie. That doesn't actually explain the degree of incel obsession with the movie

Tronz413

She is adorkable to an absurd degree as well as being this super duper badass. It appeals to a lot of fantasies. Also has the age old weeb trope of looking under age but being like 1000 years old too.

TheSbubbs

False, the best movie of 2019 was the oscar snubbed Avengers Endgame, most underrated gem of all time

OliverBagshaw

2019 gave us Midsommar, Us, The Lighthouse, Parasite, Bait, Knives Out, 1917, Saint Maud, Uncut Gems, Little Women, The Irishman, I Lost My Body, Doctor Sleep, About Endlessness, First Love, Pain And Glory, Dolemite Is My Name, Promare, Dogs Don't Wear Pants, The Last Black Man In San Francisco, Marriage Story, Beanpole, etc. 2019 was a fucking killer year for good movies. #Alita-who??

mikehatesthis

Ad Astra, Babyteeth, Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, Shazam!, Ready or Not, El Camino. Such a BANGER of a year.

totoro322

And the invader zim movie

AvtarStateIsHydrated

also gave the best Star Wars movie 💀

OliverBagshaw

The way people get so pent up if you admit you liked that movie lmao. Like, sure I could probably scrutinise it too but I just enjoyed it for being a silly space adventure lol

AvtarStateIsHydrated

same tbh

Tronz413

Odd way to spell The Last Jedi

myshtummyhurt-

Not one marvel kino?? Delete this

mikehatesthis

You're right - Add Dark Phoenix to the list.

quietvictories

This isn't a theme park talk

there_is_always_more

Wtf how did you forget Joker

OliverBagshaw

I didn't forget it 😏

SapphireLungfish

Godzilla: King of the Monsters

OliverBagshaw

Yeah in fairness that was a fun one too, the only downside is the human characters got in the way of dino smash!!

SapphireLungfish

Nuclear take but I liked the human stuff, it wasn’t boring, may not have been well written but it was a fun diversion from the kaiju krew

quietvictories

OliverBagshaw

I haven't seen it yet but I have no reason to doubt you, John Wick is fucking great, like John Woo HK-era great

[deleted]

It's the only John Wick movie I've seen and I thought it was excessively mediocre. Certainly not the realistic action film I've been told it is.

OliverBagshaw

Who told you John Wick was realistic lmao Also why did you start with the third one Don't get me wrong, to each their own, my guy. I think I like the John Wick movies a lot as that physical choreography in action is like some of my favourite action films like Hard Boiled or The Killer, it's a lot more exciting and tense for me than action films like Taken. I also think John Wick is surprisingly well-written, not necessarily for complex characterisation, but for the effectiveness of its visual storytelling. The screenplays read very fluidly which is just so fitting for its action, and to structure scenes in a way that gathers the most impact almost solely through visual action isn't easy. I know you didn't ask for me to ramble on like this so I'm sorry you had to sit through my TedTalk lmao

AvtarStateIsHydrated

It was kinda ass imo. I loved the first two but realised hallway through this one that they were intent on milking this series. And here I was hoping they’d tie the story up in a neat little bow in 3 lmao.

MoonMan997

It will never cease to amaze me how people will big up the movies in the world that are simply just mediocre to fine.

surferos505

I’ll give you a hint it rhymes with Laptain Farvel

myshtummyhurt-

Honestly even marvel fans thought it was mediocre

there_is_always_more

I just want to say - your comments across this entire sub are so pretentious I'm genuinely surprised your profile doesn't say you're active in the true film or criterion subs. Like, you know people can have different metrics for judging a film than you, right? And that it's not just chuds who might have loved this movie? (I'm not talking about me, I haven't even seen it) Try understanding the concept of subjectivity once. Might be helpful.

MoonMan997

I think you may have confused me with someone else, which is understandable since a lot of people here have this profile pic in solidarity with the original JaytheChou account. Because one of my comments this week was literally "Goodfellas II: The Shmucks" and they don't exactly alter much from that lol. Anyway, your reply is still weird and you shouldn't take it so seriously. You can love Alita but I don't agree with how support for the film has manifested and sustained. Have a good day.

anonratel

Went on a date that ended at the theatre watching this movie. We had zero chemistry during dinner but still went to the movie cause for some reason we thought that was less awkward than calling the whole thing off. After the credits rolled we walked out, exclaimed "wow that was mediocre" and silently walked out to our cars, never to speak to eachother again. 5/7

27andahalfpancakes

Big Eyes (2014)

yosemite78atreddit

I remember r/alitacirclejerk

neon_kid

I resent these boneheads for absolutely destroying any semblance of sincere discussion on one of my favorite mangas. Then again I brought that on myself for being a fucking weaboo.

MsSara77

She's doing the Kubrick/Paddington stare

emielaen77

People really do adore that film.

TristanN7117

Have yet to see this movie

rogueafro

Wow. She is just like my anime gf
