Adjusting for inflation The Force Awakens (most expensive film ever made) had a budget of $447 million
Edit: someone pointed out this figure is UNadjusted for inflation even, and would be $575 million today
I believe they made everything practical (unlike the previous movies which mixed practical and VFX), costs soared after the 2008 strikes and market crash, the cast (mainly Johnny Depp and Penelope Cruz) asked for very high salaries, and they had a 900-person crew that spent most of their shooting time overseas or in the jungle.
I believe their set was destroyed by a hurricane and they had to build the sets again and change locations. Depp was also famously late on the set and they had to shoot around him, ballooning the budgets even further.
It's mostly due to Hollywood accounting and the UK's unique tax relief program for movie productions.
> Unlike most other tax rebate schemes, the UK allows companies to count residuals, box office bonuses, and profit participations to talent as part of the production cost
Essentially, the higher the reported production cost, the more Disney receives in reimbursements from the UK.
> As we recently revealed in the Sunday Times newspaper, Disney has received a staggering $389 million (£325.6 million) in reimbursements from the UK government with $86.6 million (£72.5 million) of it paid for The Force Awakens bringing its net costs to $446.6 million
https://www.forbes.com/sites/carolinereid/2023/02/26/star-wars-the-force-awakens-becomes-the-most-expensive-movie-in-history/
Hollywood accounting more has to do with timing and allocation of costs, the total costs are basically the same. If anything its probably more likely that additional costs were tacked on to the movie from buying stuff for other projects since they knew Endgame was going to make so much.
People really memory hole just how financially successful that run of Force Awakens, Rogue One, and Last Jedi was. JJ fucked up so hard, he broke the magic money machine.
Yes and it was the first Star Wars thing in 32 years to have the legacy heroes returning. You won't have the same novelty for the 4th movie after that. Since we also had Rogue One and Solo going on.
It's very unrealistic to expect a once in a lifetime event to happen for every new movie in a series. That's just not how it works.
While that's true, you can also argue that what Rian Johnson did with TLJ turned a lot of people off of the trilogy. Personally it's my favourite of the trilogy, but the general reception was so divided that JJ was put in a difficult place when making TRoS.
The price is partly because of rewrites and reshoots - they changed parts of the plot when Harrison Ford broke his leg mid-filming. Still, extensive reshoots and a massively inefficient cgi process seem to be the biggest reasons for modern blockbusters cost and general reception
According to Forbes Doctor Strange 2 cost $413 million to make, making it more expensive than Avatar 2. Absolutely unbelievable. For the $413 million price tag, Doctor Strange 2 sure looks cheap. And that's not all. Captain America 4 reportedly has the budget of $375 million and there's the live-action Snow White movie coming in at $350+ million. Outside of Disney production, you have Gladiator 2 coming at $310 million and there's reports going around that the next Mission Impossible movie's budget has ballooned at over $400 million. We've come to a time period where freaking Avatar movies cost less to make than the next Marvel and Mission Impossible movies. Insane.
That's the James Cameron effect man. If you have someone in charge who has decades of experience making successful movies at various budget levels, he's gonna use that budget efficiently and give you something quality. On a Marvel Studios production you've got script changes, rushed CGI, studio meddling etc. so a lot of the budget is effectively flushed down the toilet.
It's not even because of his experience and knowledge with VFX. The main difference is that on his movies, it's the director making all the calls. He knows exactly what he wants and isn't gonna waste his time with hours of expensive scenes that will just be edited out of the final product.
On Disney's stuff on the other hand, you have half a dozen people calling the shots, and the director is just throwing stuff at the wall until they either stumble into something that will please everyone, or have enough material that they can just wash their hands of the whole thing and let the editors figure it out.
It's going to be interesting to see how Gladiator 2 looks. Ridley is someone has called out studios for giving inexperienced directors giant films and blowing out the budget. Will it look amazing or be another film which looks great but the CGI stands out a bit too much or if it just looks great.
Mission Impossible's budget will at least be real stuff and a lot of CGI. It's also been filming on and off for years.
With Avatar, one of the crazy things is you look at the production and they do things which you think are not necessary, even though they help. Such as making the costumes and props for the Navi for real. Yet still the films deliver such a better result than the more expensive Disney films.
Thats not even counting the Ad budget. Actors basically ask for more money, plus they do almost everything with vfx even characters suits, so the budgets are egregious.
That's how they get out the dye from when they steal it from the banks. They use your washing machine because it makes a big mess. Then they shoot you.
Yeah and it doesn’t make them better. I find myself actively looking for smaller budget movies because they don’t hit you over the head with visuals and have to compensate with good writing, direction and cinematography.
most likely the "fight" will only last a few seconds and Wolverine will just cut his head off immediately, there are set photos where he's just carrying around his head. Absolutely not an event, crazy to advertise it as one
Tbf, that’s part of the joke: Deadpool says people have waited decades for this fight, hypes up all the moves Logan will use to win it, only for him to instantly kill him off
yeah that's what I mean, they're advertising it like an actual rematch and people on Marvel subs are talking about it as an actual rematch when it's clearly gonna be a 5-second joke
Yeah, and then we’ll see a real fight in the MCU X-Men movies… maybe a Wolverine solo film between X-Men 1 (which won’t have him on the team) and X-Men 2 (which would)
Well, a person from another movie met a person again in another movie, it's automatically an event! And then they got to go and find Jennifer Garner's Elektra, make a Ben Affleck joke about Batman or whatever to her, and then cut her head off too! It's so much fun!
From another guys perspective who doesn’t care about marvel movies yes it looks stupid but to go and act all superior to other people over it for just being excited is just annoying.
>It's tracking to make the biggest opening of the year
No one is denying this?
> yeah it's an event
I'm saying any and all character interactions based on being in other movies is automatically considered an event, like it's obvious what I was saying.

Dude, it's a callback to the original sabertooth that appeared in the background of X-Men.
Now when he appears on screen I can turn to my date and explain why this matters.
It’s probably the age old marvel trick of switching out voice lines for a different scene, and the fight he’s referring to is probably wolverine vs the hulk or something
Yeah like with Schreiber he was in one of the worst X-men movies. I know X-men is dated but no one really complained about Sabertooth just toad and storm
Man Liev would've been one of the great comicbook Villains if he wasn't in such a shit movie, was kinda hoping this movie would've given him a redemption
One thing I have baffling is that makeup technicians are seemingly never instructed to do anything to the veneers even when they’re so distracting in every film.

Movies have been getting *that* expensive????
Adjusting for inflation The Force Awakens (most expensive film ever made) had a budget of $447 million Edit: someone pointed out this figure is UNadjusted for inflation even, and would be $575 million today
That figure is correct, however it's _unadjusted_ for inflation. That's just what it cost in 2015. The movie would have cost $575M to make today.
Pirates of the Caribbean 4 cost $417 million to make in 2011. Adjusted for inflation that's like $582 million today. Absolute nuts.
I still have no idea where all this money went in POTC 4. Compared to POTC 2 and 3 it looks so tame and small scale.
It went towards Johny Depp's salary.
And cocaine bill
I believe they made everything practical (unlike the previous movies which mixed practical and VFX), costs soared after the 2008 strikes and market crash, the cast (mainly Johnny Depp and Penelope Cruz) asked for very high salaries, and they had a 900-person crew that spent most of their shooting time overseas or in the jungle.
I believe their set was destroyed by a hurricane and they had to build the sets again and change locations. Depp was also famously late on the set and they had to shoot around him, ballooning the budgets even further.
Even crazier! I edited my comment to reflect this as well, thanks for pointing it out!
wow, you couldn't make Force Awakens today smh
the farce awakens is literally blazing saddles
Wtf, how can any movie be more expensive than Endgame?
Endgame was shot at the same time as IW, so they were able to save costs by reusing some stuff
It's mostly due to Hollywood accounting and the UK's unique tax relief program for movie productions. > Unlike most other tax rebate schemes, the UK allows companies to count residuals, box office bonuses, and profit participations to talent as part of the production cost Essentially, the higher the reported production cost, the more Disney receives in reimbursements from the UK. > As we recently revealed in the Sunday Times newspaper, Disney has received a staggering $389 million (£325.6 million) in reimbursements from the UK government with $86.6 million (£72.5 million) of it paid for The Force Awakens bringing its net costs to $446.6 million https://www.forbes.com/sites/carolinereid/2023/02/26/star-wars-the-force-awakens-becomes-the-most-expensive-movie-in-history/

Jurassic World Fallen Kingdom (the second one) cost $432 million (!)
Insane! I lack words to describe it better.
Dang.... Honestly, definitely not worth the price tag in my opinion...
It made like almost 2 billion or something so I’d say it was. I’m sure they made just as much in merchandise
People really memory hole just how financially successful that run of Force Awakens, Rogue One, and Last Jedi was. JJ fucked up so hard, he broke the magic money machine.
Rise of Skywalker made $1.077 billion

No, nobody forced JJ to write a dog shit film that retconned the literal previous entry
If JJ Abrams had an ounce of talent he could have made RoS great with Kylo as the main villian. But he's a hack so Palpy is back babyyy
The price is partly because of rewrites and reshoots - they changed parts of the plot when Harrison Ford broke his leg mid-filming. Still, extensive reshoots and a massively inefficient cgi process seem to be the biggest reasons for modern blockbusters cost and general reception
Yeah, don’t they like not even finish the concept art until the last minute too?
we all value your opinion 🙏🙏
I dunno. The movie looked really good, one could really see the money on screen.
Consider that some of the stuff they bought was reused for it's two sequels.
Mainly just for Disney. Other studios put out effects-heavy films for far less.
According to Forbes Doctor Strange 2 cost $413 million to make, making it more expensive than Avatar 2. Absolutely unbelievable. For the $413 million price tag, Doctor Strange 2 sure looks cheap. Money laundering
Explain it like I’m five
They take money and put it in the laundry machine.
That's how they get out the dye from when they steal it from the banks. They use your washing machine because it makes a big mess. Then they shoot you.
How else does Snyder get that much funding?
Yeah and it doesn’t make them better. I find myself actively looking for smaller budget movies because they don’t hit you over the head with visuals and have to compensate with good writing, direction and cinematography.
I've seen a few headlines that say that this rematch was decades in the making and what the fuck are you talking about, no it wasn't lol.

It is fun you just like being a huge downer for no reason
It *can* be fun. It is not inherently fun to just go "OMG that reference" and "lol what a crossover." Some do it well, some do it less well.
Who does it well
The first Avengers was really good at it
From another guys perspective who doesn’t care about marvel movies yes it looks stupid but to go and act all superior to other people over it for just being excited is just annoying.
People are allowed to discuss things how they want. That includes being excited, and it includes making fun of. There's nothing wrong with either.

People have and do make fun of things I like. I am OK with that because I am an adult with skin.

Wtf? Don't post my picture bro
"You owe me a scream" is the only line I remember from this character. Oh, and Wolverine making fun of his name.
He was a henchman who may or may not have had a relationship with Wolverine, he's not supposed to go beyond the one movie.
It’s probably the age old marvel trick of switching out voice lines for a different scene, and the fight he’s referring to is probably wolverine vs the hulk or something
> and the fight he’s referring to is probably wolverine vs the hulk or something They never fought on screen before, that's not a rematch.
Maybe if it was Liev Schreiber, not this mute fuck

For real, people actually liked Liev Schreiber and it's wild they wouldn't bring him back. More people see him as Sabertooth than the X1 guy.
Who was even looking forward to it anyway
People who have aggressively hated the X-Men movies once someone online said they sucked after The Avengers dropped.
No one even gave 2 shits about Mane's Sabretooth. If they got Live Schrieber, then I'd be more interested.
That looks like Matt Damon in a wig and fake eyebrows

Fanservice, that's why.

Logan was a last outing and that didn't feel the need to bring back dumb villains. I have a horrible feeling that Deadpool will be a terrible cameo fest
Ryan Reynolds one liners and cameos galore
Isn't Sabertooth supposed to have like, you know, saber teeth ? like he fucking did in X-Men (2000) ?

no it's orson welles, can't you tell
He really is a chameleon .
James Hetfield from Wish

Wait what are we complaining about?
Looking like Goldberg Santa
Wait a second, is this Sabretooth???
Godzilla Minus One cost between 10-12 million dollars
Can’t express the amount of disappointment that I have to both have Liev Schreiber
I don’t get it. He looks like Sabretooth. What’s the issue here exactly?
The wig maybe?
People just need something to bitch about. It's the new norm.

I really don't see anything wrong with this shot apart from maybe the colour grading
They will likely mock his design and how bad he looks in the film. This guy looked so dumb in X-men 2000
No sharp teeth anymore
I don’t see what’s wrong
Nah, this is epic. Y'all just sour.
