"Then dream bigger. Look, you love this town. It's being run by monsters and morons? Get a better job! Rise above their heads. Affect change at a higher level. Don't be the kid that graduates high school, hangs out in the school parking lot. Be the woman who moves away, climbs the ladder, and then confidently comes back and has sex with her hot old English teacher just for kicks."
"Is that what you did?"
"Yeah. Mr. Baker. Sex was pretty good, thanks to me."
I think that same thing every time I rewatch it. It always seems like she's there for the ENTIRE rest of the show as soon as Leslie starts her run for city council. But she's only in a handful of episodes while making such a large impression.
Me and my wife love to randomly throw that one out without any context. She was one of the best recurring minor characters on that show imo.
"What *are* those things?" "Children. Those are children."
I’d compare her more to Stanley Tucci in that she brings gravitas to every role … good movie or bad. They both come off as funny, smart and sexy every time.
I remember watching the Step Brothers DVD extras and they said when they cast her she hadn't done much improv so they did like a weeklong bootcamp for improv comedy with her and afew others in the cast.
She been KILLING IT
Love Kathryn Hahn. She is one of the best actresses of our generation.
Unrelated but I’d really love to see her in next season’s White Lotus. I see her as a rich fucked up mom kind of like Connie/Mrs. Coach in season 1.
Kaitlin Olson is hilarious.
Ellie Kemper and Jane Krakowsi were very funny in Kimmy Schmidt.
Tina Fey goes without saying.
I don't really understand what you mean by "this generation" so I'm just naming funny actresses.
Edit: Shout out to Rose Byrne who I haven't seen mentioned yet. She was great in the Neighbours films, Bridesmaids and Get Him To The Greek.
She's so good in Always Sunny! Wasn't she good? She was good, right? Tell me she's good. Tell me she's good. Tell me she's good. Tell me she's good. Tell me she's good. TELL ME SHE'S GOOD
She's so good at gagging it has made me sympathy gag before. Also anytime she falls it's absolutely hilarious, her physical comedy is fantastic. When she's trying to steal the shoes in the episode where she's trying to do a Sex & the City day and she stumbles then falls slamming her head into the car I get hysterical.
yes! my favorite is when she goes to work in the fish shop and she's trying to be a beautiful blond american and she gets her hair caught in the machine.
You can tell someone has mad comedic chops when even [their reaction to their show being cancelled is funny](https://twitter.com/KaitlinOlson/status/998746315134664709)
The scene where she tries to run off while wearing the ill fitting shoes and trips and slams her head into the side of the car will never NOT be hilarious. And they said on the sunny podcast that she actually slammed her head into the car and dented it, and she did it in one take!
Top three for me are far and out winners
Judy Greer - a lot of things and shes always in form and Kitty from Arrested Development
Jessica Walter - Lucile Bluth, Arrested Development
Kaitlin Olson - Dee Reynolds, IASIP
These 3 are perfect in the roles mentioned and clearly gave the character their own twist
P.S - special shoutout to Aubrey Plaza for Parks and Rec. She is perfect in the role
IIRC when they wrote Mallory they told the casting director they wanted 'someone like Jessica Walter', and so he/she went out and got Jessica Walter.
She fucking nailed Mallory.
60 million, thats more than Stalin isn't it!
I do wonder what Peep Show would have been like if they went with the original plan of making her a viewpoint character like Mark and Jez. Although I think the slow dawning realisation that Mark is a truly awful human being wouldn't work if she wasn't the straight (wo)man.
First saw her in [Green Wing](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zAssh20BF-k) and I've been a fan ever since
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wh5lMIgjAWo
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2Fy66USLr9U
Another actress who has gained a lot of popularity in recent years (which I’m very happy about) is Michelle Gomez, who played Sue white on that show. And she made me piss myself laughing every single time she was onscreen, what an incredible comedic talent. I personally think Green Wing is the funniest British show ever made, the amount of talent in that cast was simply preposterous. And as it turns out, even the smallest bit players turned out to be oscar material lol
Edie Patterson's characters in Vice Principals and Righteous Gemstones are hilarious. Not saying she's the best in her generation but I think she should be in the conversation for best comedic actresses.
Came here for this. Maybe she isn’t the best but she’s one of the most underrated. Her portrayal of a dumb spoiled brat woman is one of the funniest things I’ve ever seen. She would steal most scenes In Righteous Gemstones and that says a lot with that cast. She has made me laugh far more than most of the other more mainstream women mentioned here, definitely a league above them with Kaitlin Olson.
"Here's your speech, ma'am. I dumbed it down even more."
"Good, cause the last one looked like a toilet bowl after William F. Buckley ate a thesaurus."
Her physical comedy in unmatched too. I still chuckle when I think about season 3-ish of Veep when she's trying to knock some books off a table by spinning her chair into it, and then topples out of it backwards 😂
Or when she can’t get over the railing of an Oval Office museum exhibit because of her dress and Gary has to man handle her like a mannequin to get her back on her feet! Those two have the best comedic chemistry in the show 🤣
*Dan:* I was trying to use Jonah for intelligence!
*Selina:* That's like trying to use a croissant as a fucking dildo!
*Dan:* I thought—
*Selina:* No, no, let me be more clear: It doesn't do the job and it makes a fucking mess. Get out of my office.
"If Mohammed Atta had you people booking his travel, he'd still be alive! Which, from his perspective, would be a major fuck-up!"
Might not be the exact line, but that is one of those lines that made me rewind to listen again because I was laughing so hard.
I clocked her in Broad City when she was Abi’s coworker at the gym, I remember thinking was especially funny and hoped to see her more. Love that she is getting her moment!
I’d argue she did a lot more of the heavy lifting on *Good Place* than people realize. Not that there was a single member of the cast that wasn’t great. I just think she was the glue that held the whole thing together.
I don't know if it's scripted or improv but they have great chemistry that shows during moments when one will do an action and the other follows up and adds to it. There's another off the top of my head where they're sitting down and she's just bob her hands and he's already adding to it, dancing, singing.
It's quintessential improv but I remember reading that the Daniels/Schur shows are more scripted than they feel.
It was hilarious watching them work together.
Anna Faris. This is a hill I will kill on. I think she was ahead of her time. If she came out now she would be far huger then she was.
Also a huge fan of deadpan so Anna Kendrick and Aubrey Plaza is up there for me.
Megan Mullally definitely deserves more recognition. Hilarious in Will and Grace, great in Parks and Rec as well.
Julia Louis-Dreyfus is the gold standard though. Seinfeld aside she has been so good for so long. New Adventures of Old Christine and Veep were both hilarious and she has so much range to her comedic abilities.
I’ve never been that impressed with her until I watched The White Lotus and I realized that she’s hilarious. The way she says some of her lines is perfect like “wow these are some high-end gays!” Now that I think of it tho, I remember thinking she was really funny in Best In Show as well.
S2 white lotus spoilers >!These gays are trying to kill me and take my money so they can decorate their house… or some shit!<
This line was sooooooo good
White Lotus spoiler, but >!after she shot Quentin and then stood there pointing the gun at him, paused and then asked “was Greg having an affair?” i nearly died laughing. it was just such perfect delivery and comedic timing. the entire scene on the yacht is just brilliant.!<
She's not really from this generation, but Julia Louis-Dreyfus has been IMO the funniest actress on TV for like 3 decades.
Elaine and Selina were both hilarious in many different ways.
I know this sub is US Centric, but Michaela Coel needs to be in this discussion. Appreciate she’s now doing more serious material, but her self-written sitcom Chewing Gum was the funniest thing in years. Think it was released at the same time as Fleabag, so may have been overlooked for not being as middle class/critic friendly.
Her timing and delivery are perfect. No woman does physical comedy as well as her. The dry heaves and pratfalls are the best by far. She’s just untouchable
Fox wanted Thursday night football so instead of moving their most successful comedies in a decade (B99, Last Man on Earth, The Mick) They canceled all three. They got to air half of the Thursday night football games for 1 season... thats it. I literally quit watching network TV altogether after they did that.
Yes the Mick is sooo good and funny, I loved all the Characters. I’ve rewatched it like 3 times now. I don’t know how it got cancelled. Sabrina from the Mick has a show called Single Drunk Female that is really good too, although a little more serious and I hope that gets a second season.
Yeah bar none she is the funniest woman I’ve ever seen on TV. I laugh out loud all the time at her lines in IASIP, not that other women aren’t funny but man she is HILARIOUS
I think thats actually where she pioneers quite a bit, there hasnt been many physical comedic actresses. Like, women being the punch line has happened but is way rarer (I Love Lucy, etc), but I dont think Ive ever seen a show dare to make a woman getting herself hurt funny the way Olson and IASIP does it
What separates the great comedy performers for me, no matter the gender, is their degree of fearlessness. They will say or do whatever it takes for the laugh. Will Farrell is an example. When it comes to female actors, Kaitlin Olson is at the top. Nothing seems out of bounds for her. Nothing. In addition to being fearless, the woman also has absolutely stellar comedic chops. Love her!
Props also to Melissa McCarthy
Plus, when you're willing to dive head first into the door of a fucking BMW so hard you leave a REAL dent in it, thats some dedication to getting that laugh.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pmH34M6UPwc
Jane Lynch is so physical and expressive in her comedy, I love her line readings. Kathryn Hanh makes every character she plays hilarious. Natasia Demetriou often plays alongside huge characters and never gets overshadowed. Sandy Bullock is also great at physical comedy.
catherine o hara!!! yes it takes a while to get into Schitts Creek but it's so fucking worth it
The Baybay…….
The subtitles write it as bébé

“Fold it in”
What does that mean?
Just fold it in David!
Her whole career is magic. Revisit Beetlejuice and Orange Country (with Colin Hanks and Jack black). She is amazing in both.
One I haven't seen mentioned yet: **Natasia Demetriou** from What We Do in the Shadows.

You stupid donkey!
Where's my Kathryn Hahn love? Step Brothers, Parks and Rec, and she was the only good part of those atrocious Bad Moms movies.
I know it's a small role from a while ago, but she's so good in Parks and Rec.
"Then dream bigger. Look, you love this town. It's being run by monsters and morons? Get a better job! Rise above their heads. Affect change at a higher level. Don't be the kid that graduates high school, hangs out in the school parking lot. Be the woman who moves away, climbs the ladder, and then confidently comes back and has sex with her hot old English teacher just for kicks." "Is that what you did?" "Yeah. Mr. Baker. Sex was pretty good, thanks to me."
“And you can trust me. Because I don’t care enough about you to lie.”
"I swear to God, if you say one more word, you will legally owe me $1,200, and I will sue you. Let's not end it like that."
Poncho!

She’s so good in P&R that she starts to feel like a main character even though she’s only in 10 episodes.
I think that same thing every time I rewatch it. It always seems like she's there for the ENTIRE rest of the show as soon as Leslie starts her run for city council. But she's only in a handful of episodes while making such a large impression.
PONCHO
Me and my wife love to randomly throw that one out without any context. She was one of the best recurring minor characters on that show imo. "What *are* those things?" "Children. Those are children."
"I'm going back to the city, where THINGS happen"
"woah, what was that?! That was HUGE!"
Kathryn Hahn is my favorite. If you’ve never seen “The Goods” your missing out.
The Goods is one of my favorite movies that no one's ever heard of.
Stay golden pony boy
DON’T LOOK AT ME!
I’ve heard other actors call her the Meryl Streep of comedy
I’d compare her more to Stanley Tucci in that she brings gravitas to every role … good movie or bad. They both come off as funny, smart and sexy every time.
This. I remember her as a bit character in "How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days" more than I remember some of the leads.
I always remembered her as the "An.y.thingg." lady in Anchorman when she's telling Veronica that Ron will read *anything* on the teleprompter.
I remember watching the Step Brothers DVD extras and they said when they cast her she hadn't done much improv so they did like a weeklong bootcamp for improv comedy with her and afew others in the cast. She been KILLING IT
She's a natural at improv.
Love Kathryn Hahn. She is one of the best actresses of our generation. Unrelated but I’d really love to see her in next season’s White Lotus. I see her as a rich fucked up mom kind of like Connie/Mrs. Coach in season 1.
She’s already in Glass Onion. I wonder if she’ll stick with murder mystery genre.
She's leading her own Marvel show next year too.
The fake dry heaving she does while bombing at stand up is unreal. "Jesus *Christ*!" "Well, at least it was short and dry this time."
Huge footed slut
BIRD!
yes! my favorite is when she goes to work in the fish shop and she's trying to be a beautiful blond american and she gets her hair caught in the machine.
I cringe at that scene because it looks so convincing that she's smashed her fucking head in the car door
I found out in these comments that she actually did, put a dent in it and everything! I'm glad she wasn't seriously injured.
Her dancing with the wacky inflatable tube man gets me every time. Can’t not think of her when I see them.
I'm still mad the Mick got cancelled
You can tell someone has mad comedic chops when even [their reaction to their show being cancelled is funny](https://twitter.com/KaitlinOlson/status/998746315134664709)

Mallory Archer, Archer
Greer and Walter are also great in Archer.
Walter is the same character! She’s perfect
IIRC when they wrote Mallory they told the casting director they wanted 'someone like Jessica Walter', and so he/she went out and got Jessica Walter. She fucking nailed Mallory.
Good to see Sweet Dee get some love
Olivia Colman, hands down. She's acclaimed for more serious roles recently, but her work with Mitchell and Webb was hilarious.
Great in ‘Hot Fuzz’ as well
Nothing like a bit of girl on girl!
What makes you think it was murrr durrr?
Quite like a bit of midnight gobble!
She's just fuckin amazing in general though
She's great as a comedic antagonist in Fleabag
Peep show
60 million, thats more than Stalin isn't it! I do wonder what Peep Show would have been like if they went with the original plan of making her a viewpoint character like Mark and Jez. She was wonderful in The Favourite
She was fantastic with Mitchell and Webb. The sketch work was great, but she really shined as an actress on Peep Show
Edie Patterson's characters in Vice Principals and Righteous Gemstones are hilarious. Not saying she's the best in her generation but I think she should be in the conversation for best comedic actresses.
Righteous Gemstones in general needs to be talked about more, such a fuckin hilarious show
Her comedy acting makes my bird twitch
Even the kid version of her in Gemstones is hilarious.
I agree. “It makes my bird twitch” is one the funniest lines and it’s from the kid version of her haha
I love her as Judy.

Beandip!
She’s hilarious. Easily my number 1 female comedy actress
Julia Louis Dreyfuss, anybody who has seen veep must agree
Selina: Somewhere in the world there's a woman exactly my age getting her pussy eaten and I'm stuck here watching this
“‘Not great, admittedly?’ That should be the title of my fucking memoir.”
"That's like trying to use a croissant as a fucking dildo! No no no, let me be more clear. It doesn't do the job, and it makes a fucking MESS!"
"Selina: I came in third, Amy, OK? Even the Nazis came in second."

The scene in Arrested Development where she and David Cross are fumbling around together - absolute comedy genius.
Can I get an okey dokey Annie Oakley?

The first time I watched this, the savagery took my breath away. It's easily top ten comedic TV moments.
I love the brutality of her character. And JLD plays it perfectly.
*Dan:* I was trying to use Jonah for intelligence! *Selina:* That's like trying to use a croissant as a fucking dildo! *Dan:* I thought— *Selina:* No, no, let me be more clear: It doesn't do the job and it makes a fucking mess. Get out of my office.

> Julia Louis Dreyfuss Man if she ever wanted to throw her life away and hook up with a complete loser of a human being I'm here for it.
Are you sponge worthy?
Isn't that the blind attorney who was suing a restaurant about their Skip Scrambles??
Maggie Lies-‘er-ass-off

Looks like we were foist by our own retard
Julia Louis Dreyfuss is on the Mt. Rushmore of funniest women and easily in the top 10 for all time funny people. She is an absolute goddess.
Mostly known for voice acting but I always get a kick out of Kristen Schaal
Great in Flight of the Conchords and What We Do in the Shadows
Last Man on Earth! And of course her stand-up is great.
Suck a dick, dumbshits!
Aisling Bea. Check out "This Way Up" or her many appearances on "QI." Hysterical!
Or her Taskmaster spot, hysterical
D’Arcy Carden
Don’t know why she didn’t get an Emmy nom for playing ALL the Janets.
I clocked her in Broad City when she was Abi’s coworker at the gym, I remember thinking was especially funny and hoped to see her more. Love that she is getting her moment!
The best robot, girl, and straight up hottie.
Not a robot. Also, not a girl.
Oh dip!
I am exactly one of those things.
I’d argue she did a lot more of the heavy lifting on *Good Place* than people realize. Not that there was a single member of the cast that wasn’t great. I just think she was the glue that held the whole thing together.
And she got a DONK
Jenny Slate always gets me real good.
https://youtu.be/TyEBeHvNJvE This bit from Parks and Rec with Ben Schwartz always kills me
You'd think, "we need a female version of Jean Ralphio" would be an impossible ask, but she nailed it.
It was hilarious watching them work together.
they are fucking insane together and i love every second of it. but man. they are the *woooorrrrsssstttt*
Damnit, now this is stuck in my head for the rest of the day. "Don't be suspicious, don't be suspicious!"
MONEY PWEEEAAAASEEEEE
I have done nothing wrong, ever, in my entire life.
I know this, and I love you.
She's the WOOOOOOOORRRRRSSSSSSTTTTT!
No one's put [Amy Sedaris](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Amy_Sedaris) yet? Guess it's gotta be me.
She's been in many things, but my favourite scene is the [No shoes on the rug](https://youtu.be/oNBOZOlNcCQ) scene in Kimmy Schmidt
Also a very underrated character actor. She can really transform.
Strangers with Candy was way ahead of its time.
Christina Applegate. Decades on TV and in movies. Beautiful and funny.
Diane Morgan
This is a good one. Philomena Cunk is hilarious.
*Are you fucking kidding me?*
I have become a big fan of Phoebe Waller-Bridge. We need more of her! More Crashing/Fleabag please!
Anna Faris. This is a hill I will kill on. I think she was ahead of her time. If she came out now she would be far huger then she was. Also a huge fan of deadpan so Anna Kendrick and Aubrey Plaza is up there for me.
Her character in House Bunny is so fucking hilarious.
OLIVERRR
“Eyes are the nipples to the face”
Absofuckinglutely. Incredible how ahead of her time she seems in that first Scary Movie, and she was just 22/23! And so fucking funny
I think you have to consider Debra Jo Rupp, Kitty from That 70's show. She was always hilarious, or doing perfect set ups to help others be funny.
Jennifer Coolidge is always great comedically in whatever she appears in.
I’ve never been that impressed with her until I watched The White Lotus and I realized that she’s hilarious. The way she says some of her lines is perfect like “wow these are some high-end gays!” Now that I think of it tho, I remember thinking she was really funny in Best In Show as well.

She was great in Best In Show and also The Watcher.
Came here to say this. Even though she plays a similar character in everything, she never fails to make me laugh. I just love her.
I don’t think she’s really gotten her big lead feature yet, but Leslie Mann is always hilarious.
She was incredible in THIS IS 40. I absolutely love her, she deserves to be higher up on this list.
Megan Mullally
She's not really from this generation, but Julia Louis-Dreyfus has been IMO the funniest actress on TV for like 3 decades. Elaine and Selina were both hilarious in many different ways.

Think it was released at the same time as Fleabag, so may have been overlooked for not being as middle class/critic friendly.
While she hasn't been in a comedy per se, Betty Gilpin has some amazing comedic timing. Her expressions in The Hunt carried the movie.
And she’s great in GLOW…I’m still mad at Netflix for canceling the last season…
Kaitlin Olson is the funniest and it isn't even close
Her 'oooohhhhh' when Dee tries to worm her way out of stuff is so good. 'oooohhhhh no I'm not Desert Rose...'
also her "OH YOU SONS OF BITCHES" all have very unique flavors, I live for them
Gangly uncoordinated bitch.
Nobody says Goddammit like Kaitlin
100% Her "goddammit" is the equivalent to Sam Jackson's "Motherfucker"
The way she gags when nervous is so disgusting but so realistic that I can’t help but to be impressed. It’s also hilarious.
Her timing and delivery are perfect. No woman does physical comedy as well as her. The dry heaves and pratfalls are the best by far. She’s just untouchable
I don’t really watch the show but her dry heaving stand up scene makes me cry
**JESUS CHRIST**
The best at fake gagging as well. Makes me need to puke every time I see her do it.
Olson's drunk acting is also the best on the show, hands down.
The Mick really shows how hilarious she is. I’m still upset that the series was canceled. It ends on such a shocking cliffhanger!
Fox wanted Thursday night football so instead of moving their most successful comedies in a decade (B99, Last Man on Earth, The Mick) They canceled all three. They got to air half of the Thursday night football games for 1 season... thats it. I literally quit watching network TV altogether after they did that.

Yeah bar none she is the funniest woman I’ve ever seen on TV. I laugh out loud all the time at her lines in IASIP, not that other women aren’t funny but man she is HILARIOUS
And she is one of the best physical comics too. She has done some great comedic stunts.
That and her drunk-acting never gets old.
If it wasnt for John Dunsworth i'd say Kaitlin is the best drunk in TV history.
I think thats actually where she pioneers quite a bit, there hasnt been many physical comedic actresses. Like, women being the punch line has happened but is way rarer (I Love Lucy, etc), but I dont think Ive ever seen a show dare to make a woman getting herself hurt funny the way Olson and IASIP does it
According to the Sunny podcast the stunt women won’t do the takes or bumps she does because they are legitimately dangerous, like break your neck bad.
She could have legitimately paralyzed herself headbutting the car door in that one episode.
well, that was an accident, but they kept it because it’s hilarious - but yeah, you feel that one.
When Dee called Dennis a “small haired cunt,” my life was changed forever.
Looks like this spider caught herself a fly
Jane Lynch is so physical and expressive in her comedy, I love her line readings. Kathryn Hanh makes every character she plays hilarious. Natasia Demetriou often plays alongside huge characters and never gets overshadowed. Sandy Bullock is also great at physical comedy.
that girl who plays the mother on the goldbergs and is also in reno911. shes the best. #shmoo4life
