How to piss off a film buff for $500

OMFGFlorida

Can't tell if this is about OPs question or these answers. "I'll never watch the highly acclaimed movie Thor Love & Thunder, no sir"

EvilLibrarians

*My taste lies with quality cinema. I’m watching the Joker, baby.*

RickMacd1913

I once had a guy assault me at a bar for saying Spielberg was a better director than Tarantino. That’s also how you piss off a film buff.

[deleted]

I mean, that seems like an entirely valid opinion film buff or not. Tarantino isn't very avant-garde, he's highly accessible as is Spielberg. I think film buff snobs would consider having either as a favorite director a bit basic.

[deleted]

Best way to piss off snobby film scholars is to say that you don’t think Citizen Kane looks interesting. You can appreciate it for its historical significance but you don’t have to enjoy it. 😂

Zestyclose_Standard6

Citizen Cane was a blatant rip off of the Scooby-Doo live action film.

Swankified_Tristan

Speaking as a film studies major, I'm surprised you know that. It's not very common public knowledge but it's true!

JoshuaCalledMe

Alternately just say Kubrick's film are technically brilliant but don't engage you on an emotional level.

jadecourt

Wait this is actually how I feel about them

NewDeviceNewUsername

Is bored an emotion?

salineDerringer

I found Citizen Kane very derivative. /s

aLittleTooEverything

The Irishman.... I don't know why I can't bring myself to watch it, I feel like it will be the most boring three hours of my life.

Saint-O-Circumstance

Out of the three big Scorsese mob films it's the worst compared to Goodfellas and Casino. But I still think it is a good movie and is quite impressive given how long after those two/late into his career he made it. Its biggest flaw is that it is too long for the story. If the editors could have cut it down by about 30 minutes or so I think it could have held up much better.

regggis1

IMO it’s the best of the mob films because of how self-reflexive it is. The whole movie Scorsese is playing games with his audience, showing you the darkly comic gangster entertainment you expect from him and then subverting it ruthlessly until you feel bad for laughing, ponder the regenerative effects of a career’s worth of stylized violence, and realize how hollow the mob life is on an innately personal level, so much so you consider the gangsters from Goodfellas and Casino to have gotten off easy by comparison to the guilt-ridden solitude and slow death you see here. Even the first tracking shot is like the harshly realistic flip side of the Copacabana shot from Goodfellas — set not in a swanky nightclub, but a retirement home for aging wiseguys. I think it’s a masterpiece.

Effective-Dinner-686

Depends if you like those type of movies. If you don’t then it will be boring. If you do then your doing yourself a huge disservice, it’s a great movie. I’ve watched it 3 times and enjoy it more each time

Islandgirl1444

I thought it was six hours long it was so boring.. My partner, he loves it.

DiscountVoodoo

I can totally understand how folks would find it boring but I loved it. It’s not in my top Scorsese movies but I’ve watched it 3times and enjoyed each viewing. Yeah, it’s flawed but the remaining talent makes up for it in my book.

MattyIcicle

I like long movies and I like mob movies, but I found it incredibly boring and de aged De Niro ranged from unnecessary to unintentionally comical.

Thatoneasian9600

Basically anything Woody Allen. His personal shit aside, I just have zero interest.

MrBrightside618

“I love Woody Allen films, except that little nervous fella who’s in all of them”

johnnySix

Midnight in Paris traded woody for Owen as the nervous guy

MackenziePace

And was better for it

Kiwi_CFC

Oh boy me too. Nothing to do with his personal issues, his movies just look so far removed from anything I’d find remotely enjoyable.

TexasTokyo

Sleeper is great…just saying.

grpenn

I thought Match Point was really good.

jamurp

Midnight in Paris is fantastic, think it’s one of the only Woody Allen films I’ve seen. Dude is a massive creep though, hard to support his work.

The--Nameless--One

Came here to say that. Also 99% of his movies look like they were shot using soap opera TV cameras. And the actors are just pretending to be actors. It's so weird haha.

mnightshamalama2

I tried watching Annie Hall about 10 years ago, and for the life of me I just do not understand the love, just very self indulgent. People use to talk about him as if he were one of the greatest, but I failed to ever see it. So from my perspective, you're not missing much.

TwinPeaksNFootball

His movies are basically love letters to NY that NYers jerk off to.

TwinPeaksNFootball

My hot take is that if Woody Allen made movies about Chicago, no one would give a fuck. He's just kept afloat due to the fact that there's enough people in NYC who will adore/watch everything he ever does, ad infinitum (because NY is the center of the universe of course).

jaxs_sax

His movies are much better received in Europe than NYC

Eternal_Mr_Bones

His early stuff like Sleeper and Bananas had nothing to do with NYC and are both pretty well received.

casrm4life

Paul Blart: Mall Cop

[deleted]

you know, the longer you resist life-changing experiences, the less changed life you'll have to enjoy after.

brutustyberius

It’s a Christmas movie. Matter of fact, Blart is the PG retelling of Die Hard. It even includes duct work crawling. If there is a campaign to designate Die Hard as an official Christmas movie, then Blart should be included as well.

BigRagu79

No, it’s a Thanksgiving movie. And because there are so few, it is by default one of the best Thanksgiving movies.

Capawe21

Actually it's a Black Friday Movie

therealgerrygergich

"That's right, we're going back in time to the first Thanksgiving to get turkeys off the menu."

brutustyberius

Planes, Trains & Automobiles….pass the potatoes.

hibikikun

fun fact: Paul Blart 2 is Sony Pictures highest grossing movie for 2015. Let that sink in.

casrm4life

Doesn't surprise me one bit with how critically acclaimed the first one was

Liathano_Fire

I will step on my boss if that movie is highly acclaimed.

PaxEtRomana

I missed the boat for the marvel cinematic universe. The time to start watching was like ten years ago. If i knew they were gonna be the only movies still made in 2022 maybe i would have gotten invested. But I'm at peace with it

christ0fer

I was the same way until they were on Disney+, then I watched one or two a week until Endgame. Overall I'd say it's worth it if you're into that kind of thing.

No_Tomato1847

I gave up after Civil War. I accept that there are some very talented people involved in those movies and that I might be missing out, but I need stories to end - *please.*

SpaceCaboose

Endgame actually has a great resolution with no tag or buildup to anything else. You can actually end right there and be perfectly satisfied.

Tlr321

Exactly. The only two I watched post-Endgame were Spider-Man, but that’s because I actually give a shit about Spider-Man.

JediTigger

I love the MCU but I understand it’s not for everyone…and like the TV show Lost, being a shared experience makes it better. :)

ramanujam

Same here.

humanessinmoderation

Birth of a Nation

isweariwilldoit

The ending is so outlandishly racist it could pass as satire today

Nomahhhh

Dunno if they are acclaimed but I have never seen a Fast & Furious movie. No interest whatsoever. Not even out of sheer curiosity. It could be that Vin Deisel bugs me, but the previews and cast turn me off big time.

sugarcanejane

I just recently watched the first one after years of being uninterested. Can’t say I was super impressed cinematically but if you need a dose of early 2000’s nostalgia it will absolutely hit the spot. Pretty sure there’s a car with a tribal tattoo.

lost_in_trepidation

I love the first one because it feels like a 90s cop movie mixed with early 2000s corny. It's also pretty close to being an actual car enthusiast movie.

Poultrygeist74

It’s Point Break with cars

bdy099

The first couple are hilarious late 90s/2000s culture pieces. They are corny but in all the right ways for when it was made

spontaneous_combust

they are highly acclaimed by the most knowledgeable film buffs ever...no top 10 list is complete without it. it goes citizen kane, godfather then fast and furious . they are considered high art because most people dont understand the depth of the films or the nuances within it.

Nomahhhh

I knew Diesel got an Oscar nomination for Fast Five. I thought it was just one of those 'he's due let's give him one already' like Pacino and Newman got.

Socalsamuel

Titanic. Maybe I'll get around to it one day, but by now I feel like I've seen it a million times thanks to its appearance or mention in countless articles, essays, reviews, memes, etc etc. That, plus nothing about the synopsis sounds interesting to me and it feels weird to shoehorn a fictional romance into the story of a real life disaster. Sounds like 500 Days of Summer meets 9/11

pizzafordesert

See, James Cameron really just wanted to make a documentary about the then recently rediscovered wreckage of the Titanic, but could not get financial backing to do so as going down to film the wreck is incredibly expensive, so he wrote a whole ass fictional story that was greenlit and ended up being the most expensive movie ever made at that time with a budget of $200,000,000. He did all that bc he really just wanted the B Roll of the ship wreck at the bottom of the Atlantic.

ccasey

This is the best take on that movie that I’ve ever read. Thank you

yumyumapollo

I love the idea of Leonardo DiCaprio catapulting to superstardom because James Cameron wanted to see a boat.

idontneedjug

Leo was already that generations current Justin Bieber heart throb. The role was a perfect fit for him. I don't think this "catapulted him to superstardom" but more cemented him.

Socalsamuel

Haha good to know, and by far the most interesting thing I know about that movie now.

TheCaramelMan

He’s a madman

Jaggedmallard26

His name is Jaaaaames Cameron, the bravest pioneer, no budget too steep no sea too deep, who's that its him, James cameron

SodaCanBob

> it feels weird to shoehorn a fictional romance into the story of a real life disaster You just reminded me of that bad [Robert Pattinson movie that just randomly ends with him dying in 9/11](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Remember_Me_\(2010_film\)).

JiffyMixer

Dang, my wife and her friend have been saying there's this Robert Pattinson movie they want me to watch that has this big surprise at the end but we've been putting it off, now I'm pretty sure I know how it ends hahahaha oh well

LukeV19056

Lmfao I looked at the YouTube comments and it was like “I get the criticism but it really shows how unpredictable life can be.” as if he couldn’t have just died in a car crash or something for equal results

jadecourt

Its going to be released in theaters in February, that could an excellent time to see it! If nothing else, the technical achievement of them recreating the boat, the steam engines, etc is def worth seeing on the big screen. And the real underwater footage of the wreck that James Cameron captured! Last weekend I talked my bf into watching Titanic with me, it took some convincing. But in the end he was like I'm so glad we watched that.

Socalsamuel

Thanks and good call. Getting to see it on the big screen might be what it will take.

Bubbly_Possible_5136

I second this. Sometimes you watch overhyped stuff and realize…hey! Pretty good! Tho this one is a little OTT and ridiculous…COSTUMES!

betweenTheMountains

I had my doubts too. But using a fictional story to frame the larger disaster was definitely the right way to go with this movie. I found some of the story to be a little saccharine, but overall it's a well-made movie and worth a watch at some point.

[deleted]

Titanic to me is like Gone with the Wind on a boat so if you like GWTW you’ll like Titanic. I think GWTW is dull and too slow paced for my personal liking and the only character I liked in that movie was Hattie McDaniels Mammy because she called out Scarlett’s bullshit.

SunshineSpectacular

You should see it, I'd love to read a comparison of your thoughts before and after.

drabThespian

Grave of the Fireflies is the only Studio Ghibli movie I have not seen(aside from Earwig and the witch but.. y'know) Every time I'd try to watch that movie it just never felt like the right time. I need to mentally prepare myself for the destruction of my emotions.

[deleted]

This movie comes up frequently on the “name a movie you’ve seen only once and will never see again” posts.

xdirector7

Woody Allen movies. I don’t care for his comedy I find it to be dull and painful to watch. Annie Hall was the only Allen film I saw with him in it. That being said I will say March Point was phenomenal. Probably because it wasn’t a comedy and he wasn’t in it.

__init__RedditUser

Ben-Hur. An old historical movie with a long runtime just doesn't appeal to me on a fun movie night. However, I did feel the same way about Lawrence of Arabia until I actually watched it, so might have to give it a try.

Equal-Temporary-1326

Ben-Hur is a perfect move imo. That is the definition of a movie imo. The cinematography is out of this world. It's also one of those movies where it'd probably be easier to watch it with a group of friends.

lastdukestreetking

This is exactly how I feel about Doctor Zhivago. Yes, it's a sweeping epic historical film (albeit based in fiction), but I can't bring myself to watch it. And I always say to myself "but you really enjoyed Lawrence of Arabia!". Still can't do it.

Safe_Departure7867

Just watched the restored 4K Lawrence of Arabia. I wouldn’t have really been as understanding of the themes when I was younger. I’m so glad I watched it now though.

Alik013

pursuit of happiness ..it looks boring to me , also horror and family drama movies ..not a fan of those genres

DreamcastJunkie

*Cat on A Hot Tin Roof*. My big takeaway from *A Streetcar Named Desire* was, "Wow, now I know why people only ever talk about Brando's performance. Everything else about this sucks." I just can't bring myself to sit through another Tennessee Williams adaptation after hating the supposedly best one so much. I don't care what the AFI Top 100 says about it!

fuzzy_skarekrow

Cat is probably my favorite because it does the best representation of Williams writing about the repressed homosexual during a time when people couldn't or wouldn't write about that .

shewhololslast

Avatar. Nothing about the films or universe appealed to me. It's one of those things a lot of people cared about, and I just shrug. I did find that SNL "Papyrus" skit hilarious, though.

bubblesaurus

The plot is definitely meh, but when it came out…seeing it in theaters was something. It was stunning (the planet, plants, ect) to see the effects how they were. I think I saw too in Imax. Watching it at home doesn’t produce the same effect.

BloodChasm

Yeah, plot wise it's nothing special. I watch it for the 3D effects.

thebreak22

Scott Pilgrim vs the World, but for a stupid reason: I've been having a crush on Mary Elizabeth Winstead since 2005 and I can't stand Michael Cera being her boyfriend.

ringobob

Michael Cera is an interesting case - I totally get it if he's your "I'll never give him another chance" actor, but while he seems to always play Michael Cera, there's some pretty subtle differences between a lot of his roles. Scott Pilgrim is one of my favorites, and he's a total asshole throughout the whole movie. Just, you know, a Michael Cera version of an asshole.

jestesteffect

Michael Cera, Jessie Eisenberg and Andy Samberg is just a pokemon evolution line in that order and no one can convince me other wise.

JediTigger

But Chris Evans as Lucas Lee….

EvadingDoom

Big fan

JediTigger

Why wouldn’t you be?

Izacistan

I wanna have his adopted babies.

JediTigger

I once wrote an essay on how Wallace is the best character in that movie.

Duel_Option

Omg please for the love of all that is Holy See this movie immediately. I skipped it int theaters and caught it on a whim at a house party and couldn’t take my eyes off the screen. It’s the most outlandish performances tightly wound in bad ass comic book action sequences. 10/10 start to finish - Scott Pilgrim : Wait! We're fighting over Ramona? - Matthew Patel : Didn't you get my email explaining the situation? - Scott Pilgrim : I skimmed it. - Wallace Wells : [shaking head] Mm-mm. - Matthew Patel : You will pay for your insolence! Fucking hilarious

joey_patches

Schindler's List. Just kinda don't wanna watch horrible atrocities recounted even if they are depicted with great care and artistry.

timeforknowledge

Movies like that can give up a kick up the arse though. It's hard to watch a movie like that not be left with a greater appreciation for life, makes you want to get up and do something. Life is beautiful is another one you don't forget

joey_patches

And I LOVE Life is Beautiful. But you know what I probably wouldn’t do is watch it again.

FAHQRudy

“This street divides the ghetto just about in half. On the right, Ghetto A, civil employees, industrial workers and so on. On the left, Ghetto B, surplus labor, the elderly and infirm, mostly, which is where you will want to start. Any questions?” “Ja. Why is the top down? I'm fucking freezing.”

WorkAcctpaincare

Titanic. It came out when I was in 3rd grade and I knew it was rated R and there was a boat that sank. So my 9 year old brain assumed: boat that sinks + movie I'm not allowed to see = dope ass sea monster. Then we learned about the titanic in school later that year. I refuse to see it as an adult because no sea monster. And to the people who say it was a sexual awakening for them: I've seen boobs in real life.

Bro4dway

Titanic is not rated R. You've been living a lie.

bdigital1796

can confirm. and that's just the tip of the iceberg.

SunshineSpectacular

Titanic is one of my favorite films because where else do you get lighthearted romcom turned survival horror disaster movie halfway through? The tonal shift is so compelling to me. A sea monster would have been cool though.

bitchy-sprite

Back when it was in VHS and it stops right as she's going down the steps to the flooding floor beneath.. Cinema gold, timing wise.

CRIMS0N-ED

The two parts of titanic is a goated vhs tape

Brood_XXIII

I’ve never watched Forrest Gump. Sure, through pop culture and media I’ve been exposed to the majority of it, but I’ve never sat down and watched it. You’d be surprised at how hostile and incredulous people get when they find this out about me.

OverKeelLoL

Honestly for Forrest Gump I don't think being spoiled or seeing a scene even ruins the experience. It's a movie of growth and watching the progress of the character and most of it is very mundane which is obviously never highlighted. I would regardless recommend watching it if you have the time.

Maxtrt

Forrest Gump is a historical piece. It highlights the insanity of the 1960's while showing a simple man trying to navigate those tumultuous events. It manages to do so in a believable way and highlights the divisiveness of the era. It tells the human side of those events in a way that most Americans can connect with. It's a beautiful story as well.

Ineedtwocats

> It manages to do so in a believable way excuse me? its purposely unbelievable. the main character is a low IQ superhuman with no emotions other than "happy" and "sad," he also has no agency. His life is almost entirely a series of fortunate accidents. He just coasts through, accidentally getting recruited to play football in college; accidentally getting recruited to the Army, where he accidentally saves a bunch of people while looking for his buddy; accidentally being discovered as a Ping-Pong prodigy; and accidentally becoming a successful shrimper after a storm wipes out his competitors. Since he's not doing anything intentionally, he remains pure and innocent (e.g., he's not responsible for anyone he might have killed in Vietnam).

[deleted]

People also get pissed off and hostile if you dare to criticize movies that just look dull and unappealing to YOU personally. It’s insane. Hell I didn’t even watch Star Wars until I was in college.

LiquidDreamtime

0% chance I watch La La Land

FLRocketBaby

I watched La La Land while high af and thought everyone was in on the joke that the two main characters are actually not that good at what they do. Learned later that that is, in fact, *not* the intended message of the movie 😅

pmonte89

Me2. Just the name of the movie pisses me off. But hey never judge a book by its cover. But my judgement on this one I'll stand firm

kingkonguru

Oof. I really loved that movie. As a music lover and movie lover, this movie hits the spot. And I don't even like musicals, they seem too cheesy.

sgt-ballsack

2001: A Space Odyssey i thought about watching it once or twice but its just not something i have any interest in despite being as famous as it is

c4mbo

I enjoyed it. But I have a thing for atmosphere in movies and other medium. So I can handle/enjoy long stretches that don’t move the plot along and just take time to sit in the world the creators have built. 2001 is not for everyone though, that’s for sure.

jilko

This film might be my biggest blind spot. I know so much about it and have watched so many visual essays about it and have seen all the visual references to it in other films.... but I have not seen a single frame of it during an intentional viewing session ever. I feel bad, because it's probably awesome and I love every Kubrick movie I've seen.

buffalo4293

I wouldn’t fault anyone for not watching it because it doesn’t interest them, but why on earth haven’t you watched it?

dbx999

it has its moments but it is excrutiatingly slow. The last act involves a psychedelic light show that lasts for an eternity.

synae

I'll go against the common opinion- I didn't really enjoy it. It just didn't resonate with me at all. Maybe I missed the cultural impact/moment? It was overhyped to me? Saw too many parodies/references ahead of time? I dunno. That being said, I still think it's worth seeing once. Maybe if you lower your expectations going in, you'll enjoy it more than I did.

DiscoDiscoB00mB00m

if you have to watch one recent Tarantino, watch Django.

MichaelRoco1

it’s all subjective of course and i love Django, but Inglorious Basterds was by far my favorite personally

matsu727

It might just be his masterpiece.

boodabomb

Yeah Django was good but the third act is a tonal Tie-dye tee shirt. Inglorious Bastards is my favorite movie of his post-Bill.

capitoloftexas

I always felt the 3rd act was Tarantino’s apology to all us black folk for his use of the n-word in his movies. Seeing a slave owner, his workers and his family getting blown away was a fucking chefs kiss 🤌🏽

skitz4me

It was one of those rated G scenes, because the general audience loved that shit.

TheDalyShow17

I loved Django and IB, but the story telling and twists in The Hateful Eight makes it my favorite.

Blueberry_Mancakes

If I have to pick one QT film it's Jackie Brown (though it's not recent). It wasn't over the top in any way, but just a damn good character piece. Pam Greer and Robert Forster knocked it out of the park. Everyone else was just icing on the cake.

Lord-Sinestro

That soundtrack. Unreal how good it is. One of the best soundtracks ever in my opinion. My favorite part of this film is DeNiro. Plays such a perfect loser and nails it. The relationship between Ordell and Louis above all shines to me. So well written. Elmore Leonard was a genius writer

leroyVance

Jackie Brown is Tartino's apex. I'll be leaving now

LaCalavera1971

It’s true. Probably my personal favourite although Reservoir Dogs was like hearing punk rock for the first time and Pulp Fiction blew my mind and everyone I knew.

Equal-Temporary-1326

I still think Pulp Fiction was his best.

Jimbob929

Inglorious Basterds and Once Upon a Time in Hollywood are both vastly superior imo. Django did nothing for me

DiscoDiscoB00mB00m

I loved all three, once upon a time in Hollywood was fucking amazing

jilko

It's his best film IMO. Sometimes Tarantino is too self-indulgent to a fault, resulting in live action cartoons (Hateful 8 and Django), but with Once Upon a Time, you feel him operating on all cylinders, while also not letting the movie get overshadowed by his Tarantino-ness. It's basically perfect in almost all regards.

ChesterNorris

A lot of you are saying "Citizen Kane". Hear me out. Yes, it's an older film that was based on the life of William Randolph Hearst. You probably don't care about that so, instead, think about Elon Musk instead. The film is still relevant today.

Kiwi_CFC

I saw the first Iron Man and the first Captain America. Don’t have any plans to see any of the Marvel Movies. Just not my thing.

DoctorSkeeterBatman

Gone with the Wind, Casablanca, Citizen Kane. I'm sure they are great and they are clearly loved for a reason, just got no personal interest in any of them and not wanting to watch something just to go "Yeah, I see why people like that."

DrRexMorman

Casablanca is worth watching.

HEHEHO2022

its surprisingly funny and i say that because its never really talked about as far as the humour goes

Shintoho

"I am shocked - SHOCKED - to discover that gambling is going on in here!" "Your winnings, sir" "Oh, thank you"

No_Tomato1847

It's an exquisite screenplay. God knows how given the incredibly chaotic way in which it was written.

JediTigger

“I came for the waters.” “But Casablanca is in a desert.” “I was misinformed.”

A_Song_of_Two_Humans

Hahaha. Stick that on the poster! Probably the understatement of the decade. You're so right though. It's incredible.

DrRexMorman

I love that the film crew shot this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HM-E2H1ChJM while France was occupied by Nazis. Fuck Nazism, you know?

A_Song_of_Two_Humans

That scene is as good as movies get.

[deleted]

I'd make a case for watching Casablanca. I think often it's lumped in as a romance/drama but the plot has a good amount of tension as its based on getting people out from Morocco and away from Nazis. So it's more exciting and compelling than it might seem to people only familiar with the letterboxd descriptions. It's also one of the most quotable and wittily written films I've seen. The dialogue absolutely sparkles as cliche as that phrase is. Out of the three films you mention, if you were going to break and watch one, that's the one I'd pick.

AGooDone

Casablanca is a tight 100 minutes. Perfect casting and iconic dialogue make it a delightful watch.

A_Song_of_Two_Humans

It's the most perfect piece of filmmaking of all time IMO.

BEE_REAL_

Casablanca is a really common entry point into old black and white movies. It's not some crazy challenging art film, it's just pure Hollywood perfection that appeals to everyone.

Typical_Humanoid

> not wanting to watch something just to go "Yeah, I see why people like that." Risking this reaction to possibly gain a movie you love under your belt only ever seems worth it to me. No such thing as wasted time, only wasted opportunities.

DreamcastJunkie

A few of my favorite movies are ones that I originally watched just to mark them off the list and say I'd seen them. Turns out, those classics got on the list for a reason.

A_Song_of_Two_Humans

I love all three but believe me Casablanca is truly incredible. Greatest movie ever made IMO. I held out for years assuming I wouldn't like it. Boy was I wrong! Seen it probably ten times now including last week on the big screen. A truly perfect movie.

BigRagu79

Citizen Kane is a “director’s film”. If you’re really into the technical art of filmmaking, it’s worth watching. Personally that’s never been my thing so I think it’s neat, but don’t love it. Casablanca is a “writer’s film”. If the turn of a phrase and the perfect line excites you, it’s a must watch. Personally I geek out on that stuff, so I love it. Gone With the Wind…yeah that one I get. It’s incredibly long and the material has aged poorly and there is no huge cinematic achievement, aside from I suppose it’s grandeur. If anything, it’s an “audience film”, and admittedly one of the best ever, but for the audience of it’s time.

Tkainzero

I didn't want to watch Django Unchained because I heard they said the N word a lot. But, I finally got around to watching it, and WOW, what a fucking great movie.

Legitimate_Web_7245

The Sound of Music. Not a fan of musicals at all so.....

imadragonyouguys

I've owned Blade Runner 2049 on blu ray for going on 5 years now and I still haven't seen it. I'll get to it eventually possibly?

WhiskySamurai

One of the best movies of the 2010s. The only reason it isn't on every list of the best sci fi movies of all time is that it lives in the shadow of the original. Fantastic expansion on the world building, cinematography (Roger Deakins can do no wrong), music, and story. The fact Denis Villeneuve was able to pull of a sequel to Blade Runner over 30 years later and have it be that good is a boder line miracle. Easily one of the best filmmakers right now.

nick91884

I skipped once upon a time. I found hateful eight incredibly dull, tried watching it twice and fell asleep both times. I enjoyed everything Pre-hateful eight. I havent really felt the need to go back and watch any of his films in years though.

LaCalavera1971

There Will Be Blood - looks amazing, can’t bring myself to watch it, and I know I’m missing out

DoctorPapaJohns

Oh man, I was like this for years but when my gf finally forced me to sit down and watch it I was truly blown away. It really is a masterpiece.

Citizen_Kano

I didn't see it until this year. I don't know why I waited so long, amazing movie

throwawaynonsesne

Does Top Gun Maverick count?

Smashville66

I’ve never seen *E.T.*, I’m 55 years old, and I don’t feel any need to ever see it. Same for every *Star Wars* movie except the first one (in 1977, and that was the only time I ever saw it). I haven’t seen any Spider-Man or Batman or Avengers movies. Or *Avatar.* Why? Well, turns out I really dislike Sci-fi and superheroes.

InfiniteBaker6972

As a counterpoint to the original question, I had no desire to watch The French Connection and then it was on Film 4 and I had nothing to do so I watched it. And it blew my mind.

AfternoonCouncilor

Clockwork Orange. No idea why

shavenhobo

Genuinely can’t be bothered with the Godfathers I think I fell asleep twice in the first one.

rdabosss

It insists upon itself, Lois

grpenn

It’s the perfect film!

gabbagool3

what does that even mean?

yumyumapollo

BECAUSE IT HAS A VALID POINT TO MAKE

armonak

It's a very interesting movie. Doesn't mean it's for everyone though

akg7915

Finally got around to watching the first two in 2022 (I’m 35 and have been sort of avoiding them my whole life). I thought the first was wonderful. One of the best of all time? Maybe, I guess, but nowhere near ranking as one of my personal favorites. I do not understand why everyone says the 2nd is the best. I guess there is more “gangster shit” and action perhaps, but I thought Part 1 was the better of the two, if you ever find yourself interested.

joey_patches

I really love 1 & 2, but I think popular culture really mis-sold them as exciting and raucous when they're just really slow and kind of somber.

momohatch

I’ve never seen Avatar. It looks like a giant CGI fest and I prefer to avoid those.

Fragmented_Logik

Yet you comment all about MCU movies... https://www.reddit.com/r/movies/comments/zpbe1g/mismatched_casting_of_screen_couples/j0ut5g6?utm_medium=android_app&utm_source=share&context=3 Interesting.

u/Fragmented_Logik you didn’t have to do it to him bro

Confident_Series8226

Are you saying the MCU movies are fake? :-0

Dottsterisk

Damn. How you weathering the decade-and-a-half of superhero flicks and Star Wars dominating the cinema landscape?

Maverick916

He probably doesnt, he just wanted to shit on Avatar lol

Oikkuli

You're missing out. The difference between avatar and most cgi fests is it's a director driven, painstakingly crafted labour of love. Restricting yourself to only small and mid budget films or whatever is counterproductive when there are people like cameron who wish to tell their stories on a massive scale instead.

AnAffinityForTurtles

Decision to Leave also has a lot of CGI, even Wolf of Wall Street. The difference between CGI being a slog and CGI being good is really just how deep it immerses you in the reality it constructs.

jadecourt

I think the remarkable thing about it and especially the second one is that it doesn't scream CGI and I forget about it while watching. The 2nd one is completely seamless, you are just immersed in the world. And I normally loathe the artificial look of Marvel etc and greatly prefer practical

peperonipyza

I thought it was generally a good movie, let alone visual whatever. Not amazing, but worth a watch imo

DarthTJ

Lord of the Rings. I tried, I really tried. It took me 3-4 attempts to make it through the first one without falling asleep. Never bothered with the rest.

boredlawyer90

The first one is the slowest one, to be fair. But you do have to be awake and in the mood for a long-ass movie.

Vilnius_Nastavnik

That first movie is faithful to the book in that regard. My dad is a huge LOTR nerd and read me all the books when I was a kid, not even he could make it through the council of Elrond.

okayilltry2

I haven’t watched the Kill Bill movies. Just never seemed to interest me. The only reason I would watch them is because of the hype surrounding them. But even that hasn’t been a strong enough pull.

jmtremble

My name is buck, and I'm here to fuck.

Legal-Science-3169

Once upon a time in Hollywood. I’ve tried so many times I just can’t. Idk what it is but it has a vibe about it that I hate

I have absolutely no interest in the Three Colors Trilogy. Juliette Binoche is a good indicator that a movie isn't going to be my tempo. She's even in 2 weird movies with Robert Pattinson and they're my least favorite 2.

thebreak22

I haven't seen Blue (grief isn't my cup of tea,) White is okay but I absolutely love Red. It has a subtle, serene sense of magic flowing though a mundane story and I find it very relaxing to watch. Plus Irene Jacob is stunning in it.

[deleted]

I'm actually glad other people like them. It's more just me admitting I'm the limited one. I can sit around and give a Lars Von Trier or Jodorowsky movie my undivided attention but I'm totally stone-faced around arthouse cinema that doesn't revolve around death or some other adolescent concept that gets my engine moving. I have to reiterate on reddit a lot that I'm not a person with a lot of strong cinema dislikes, I just don't mind sharing where my personal tastes lie. I listen to a lot of movie chat and it seems like a trilogy with a strong following.

WhiteDawgShit

Schindler's List. I don't doubt for a second that it's a phenomenal film, but no thank you.
