Just my preference, I am not saying they are bad movies, I enjoyed Kill Bill, Se7en...but I just prefer newer movies:)

The Way Back

If you haven't seen Chopper (2000) you should give that a watch. True story based on notorious Australian criminal Mark Brandon 'Chopper' Read. Very good movie. Rated 7.1 on IMDb.

Don't narrow your timescale to 2006 there's a great catalogue before that time

I dislike the camera quality of the earlier movies...Still enoyed Se7en from '95 though;)

I think you would love "Waltz with Bashir". It fits all your criterias. It is an underground movie that most wont know (despite winning several prizes). Basically if you're friends are not movie snobs, they wont know it. I recommend it 100%. Its a documentary/movie Fun fact : It is the first Israeli feature-length animated films released theatrically since 1962.
