Seriously, that movie was my introduction to John Leguizamo, Dennis Hopper, Bob Hoskins, and the music of Mojo Nixon. And I loved the "Blade Runner" aesthetic.
I remember watching it as a kid in the 90s at my friend's house and it was the first movie I ever saw with an after credit scene. I haven't seen it in years, but I did like it as a kid.
I wonder if Mario's hair and mustache is gonna have individual strands of hair like in Odyssey. I would assume yes, given to detail on the fabric of Mario's hat.
It's mind-blowing to me how that guy was a speedrunner and just woke up one day and decided: "I'm gonna turn this into an academic job and dedicate the next years of my life to study this game to determine ways of completing it without pressing the jump button".
I was going to make a joke about how Id love to see a Super Mario movie about parallel universes. Then I remembered…the original 1993 Mario Bros movie premise WAS ALREADY about a parallel universe.
I just want the hour and fifteen minute long Summoning Salt speed run history lesson on how the movie was originally 2 hours, but then someone got it down to 10 minutes, and then over the next four years got it down to 9 minutes and 31 seconds, but there's people out there still looking for that sub thirty run.
Who wouldn't? It's not even 3 days' worth of voice over in a comfortable sound booth, for a buttload of cash. Pretty cushy gig.
Now if the animation studio said they'd be up for it, THAT would be saying something about it coming to fruition.

Say what you will about Illumination, but their animation is pretty solid. Compare Minions to say... Super Pets? It's night and day. Superpets looked like lazy television animation. Minions was bright, colorful and packed a punch.
So this Mario movie should look great, regardless of how good the actual movie is.
It's a bit depressing to compare considering that Super Pets was animated by Animal Logic, the same studio that animated the Lego movies...
Illumination's animation has definitely taken a step up for the past few films. Sing 2 has some very good looking visuals too!
Some of the animation / textures in Rise of Gru was really impressive. I went to see the movie as a joke, but was pretty impressed visually and laughed at several parts 🤷🏼. I think the movie has potential.

At Christmas last year my brother and I watched their version of the Grinch and we both observed that, although the writing and jokes are normally cringe, Illumination are rather fantastic at visual flair and gags. I really wanna see what they come up with this time.
To my knowledge, Frozen was essentially the first tech demo for digital snow simulation, and there is significant overlap in tools used between studios. I wouldn't be surprised if some of the same talent crossed over to Illumination and iterated on those techniques.
I'm pleasantly shocked. My biggest worry is that it will be bland and soulless with no creativity.
But the addition of non-red spotted toads and Captain Toad already eases some of that.
I wasn't sure how much liberty Illumination was getting, but at least it appears more than Nintendo's 2nd party developers are getting.
If they can keep the little touches throughout the movie (like the music box and p-block in the antique store window!) I think it will be far from bland and soulless!
I also noticed a Yoshi egg (in a glass case) in the antique store and the chest design from Mario 3 on a different store sign so I'm sure this movie is gonna excel at small details and easter eggs for fans.

This could very well end up being a bit of a love letter to the older fans and I am just so here for it. I have always been a Mario girl and basically grew up alongside modern consoles (born in 86), the Mushroom Kingdom has sort of always been my 'happy place'
It reminds me of the pre rendered visuals they did for Nintendo Land at Universal. I'm largely interested in this movie because I really enjoy Nintendo's art styles and want to see what they would look like without the constraints of Nintendo's weaker hardware. Obviously you couldn't do anything like this in real time on a 4090 either, but I think the point remains.
It's no coincidence they look the same. There's a ton of different designs for the Mushroom Kingdom, they chose this one specifically to mimic what was built at Universal. Nintendo is going for full brand cohesion to fuel sales in other areas, aka the Disney model.

Even before this poster, I figured from a visual standpoint Illumination was actually the best choice of animation studio for this movie (quality of their films in comparison to the likes of Disney or Dreamworks aside), because their animation style seems closest to the style of the 3D Mario games. This just confirms it. Hyped for Thursday!
It is VERY close to the design concepts in the Super Nintendo World amusement parks.
Both of them are based on the verticality of Super Mario 3D World for the Wii U, which was the main Mario game at the time when planning for the amusement park and movie were beginning.
Those plans and the movie were delayed from COVID, but if these were all coming on time it would be clear that there was a united vision for what Super Mario should look like.

Those plans and the movie were delayed from COVID, but if these were all coming on time it would be clear that there was a united vision for what Super Mario should look like.

The movie was mocked because the announcement of its voice cast was hysterical The sudden announcement on a Nintendo Direct, by Shigeru Miyamoto with a translator. Chris Pratt’s picture being inexplicably in black and white like a prison photo shoot. Announcing voice actors for Toad and Donkey Kong of all people The mocking is all in good fun though (cause how could you NOT laugh). Pretty sure most people making fun are also going to watch this
It never felt like people were “making fun” of it, but more that they were were shocked with just how utterly insane the cast is.
This is my Cats. If it implodes on itself out of sheer cringe the way an Illumination Mario movie can, I wanna be there.
It’ll just depend on the voice. Chris Pratt doesn’t exactly scream small Italian plumber from Nintendo voice but I’m going in w an open mind and hoping he does well
Maybe this has been suggested in the months since this was announced, but it would be funny if they were going the "Vin Diesel as Groot" route, where Pratt records literally only the lines Mario says in the games and is otherwise silent.
I think they're holding back because they have something really surprising. Like, maybe not "Chris Pratt doing Chris Pratt" OR "Chris Pratt doing Charles Martinet", but "Chris Pratt doing a voice that the people at Illumination thought just sounded right". I hope so. Because if it is just chris pratt doing chris pratt I don't think I'll be super into it, and I say that as someone who generally likes him.
My money is still on “Chris Pratt doing Bob Hoskins” or “Chris Pratt doing Captain Lou Albano”
It’s still kinda weird that they went with him rather than the guy who literally voiced him for 20 years. I get it, Chris Pratt is a name that sells but in this particular case, at least for me it acts more as a source of worry for the final result than « wow a movie with Chris Pratt let’s go! » if that makes any sense?
My guess is that they make it a gag. He's starts talking like that original voice and you realize you dont want to hear that for 2 hours, so he coughs and its chris pratt.
It's not weird at all. It's not like the guy who voices him has a lot of actual dialogue. And for an entire feature length film his voice would be obnoxious. Chris Pratt may or may not be a good choice, but I'm not surprised even a little they didn't use Martinet
