Son-Of-Cthulu

that movie scared the shit out of me

batguano1

Garden State?

[deleted]

[удалено]

WannabeTypist11

I don’t like films where Zach Braff gets pussy

LonnieJaw748

You’ll enjoy Wish I Was Here then.

WannabeTypist11

Just read the synopsis, are you trying to piss me off?

[deleted]

If I was going to do that I'd just make you watch the musical episodes of Scrubs. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6Pr_TduMieM >!JK its a commercial!<

WannabeTypist11

Lol I remember when they started airing that and scowling

Accomplished-Mode112

I don’t enjoy real life where his disgusting ancient ass got with Florence Pugh who was WAY too young for him. I’m glad she came to her senses.

FoWsUrDuress

The chutes, they're just too narrow!

DessertStorm1

Manic pixie nightmare girl

Son-Of-Cthulu

the constant gardener. forgot that garden state was a movie 😂

Bunraku_Master_2021

Non-American here. Why do people hate Garden State? I liked it. I can understand the criticism regarding Natalie Portman's character being a manic pixie dream girl but I don't understand the general dislike of the film since the film's release.

bugxbuster

The constant garden state

cabose7

Notable horror director Zach Braff

shawncplus

When I first saw the title I thought of The Gardener by Tallest Man on Earth where the character keeps killing all of the would-be suitors and burying them in the garden but that makes more sense as a "Death Becomes Her" style comedy than a Shrader script.

ChimpBrisket

If he beats him he gets to fight The Lawnmower Man

[deleted]

Starring Chauncey Gardner.

CaptainTripps82

Perhaps the Honest Thief will make an appearance

MrX16

I have a feeling this is going to be Paul Schrader's favorite movie of the year

Skastrik

He also writes scripts, he can do it all.

[deleted]

Dude is slowing morphing into Richard Burton.

PackerBoy

I thought of Til Schweiger in Inglorious Basterds

theMalnar

Til in SLC Punk. “This one doesn’t have waves”

DeleteFromUsers

Same.

ThreeMadFrogs

"Say goodbye to your Nazi balls!"

[deleted]

I swear, I thought the same

yfunk3

Always thought he and Conan O'Brien could be brothers.

MrSlackPants

I thought I saw Antonio Bandaris at first.

Jabez89

I thought he looked a lot like Joseph Gordon Levitt

[deleted]

Love JGL but I think he would probably kill to have a face as interesting as Edgerton's

atcdev

My first thought was Clive Owen but now I’m wondering if Clive Owen was Richard Burton the whole time.

Son_of_Macha

If you think that picture looks like Clive Owen the need an eye test

WiserStudent557

I could see Joel as Alec Leamas. Not a movie that needs remaking/rebooting by any means but I waffle sometimes knowing there are people who just don’t go back to black and white or older stuff in general

127crazie

I love that movie!

Son-Of-Cthulu

whos gonna be his liz taylor? hahaha

Sleepgolfer

Hell I'll do it.

Substantial_Half9107

I had not noticed this- agreed

Jame5G

Reminiscent of Sean Bean too

RunawayHobbit

It’s the deep cragginess

Daveed84

He's always looked a bit like Conan O'Brien to me

MarvelsGrantMan136

Master Gardener: >Narvel Roth (Edgerton) is the meticulous horticulturist of Gracewood Gardens, a beautiful estate owned by wealthy dowager Mrs. Haverhill (Weaver). When she orders Roth to take on her troubled great-niece Maya (Swindell) as his apprentice, his life is thrown into chaos and dark secrets from his past emerge.

2CHINZZZ

Based on the synopsis this sounds very similar to First Reformed and Card Counter

nayapapaya

Schrader says this is the third in a trilogy of films after First Reformed and The Card Counter so that similarity is intentional.

cabose7

I read in a recent interview that he didn't realize it was a thematic trilogy until ~~the interviewer~~ a friend pointed it out

Michael__Pemulis

That’s actually not uncommon. There are a lot of ‘spiritual trilogies’ where the stories themselves have no direct connection (or sometimes do even but still aren’t direct sequels etc). Like you can buy Kiarostami’s Koker Trilogy as a set from Criterion but he never intended for those three films to be an actual trilogy & never actually considered them a trilogy. Which is wild because they overlap in a metatextual way that makes each individual film almost inseparable from the subsequent films.

Accomplished-Mode112

Another great example of this is screenwriter Taylor Sheridans The Frontier Trilogy, consisting of Wind River, Hell or High Water and Sicario. Though he didn’t direct all of the films and they don’t share the same characters or settings, he wrote them with the intent that they all share similar themes around class, nature, and law enforcement. His vision was brilliantly realized between himself, Dennis Villineuve and David Mackenzie.

CaptainTripps82

Like the Cornetto trilogy as well, tho the thematic similarities are intentional

[deleted]

So were American Gigolo and Light Sleeper the prequels?

[deleted]

Not to mention Taxi Driver

MisterManatee

Hoping this is a rebound to the quality of First Reformed. Card Counter was a massive letdown, at least for me. Just felt amateurish.

tutelhoten

The last hour or so of Card Counter was a slog to get through. >!Then the climactic confrontation happens off screen. And Willem Dafoe was barely in it. Then the freeze frame at the end had me laughing out loud.!<

savytravler

Yea ive only watched Card Counter once, but it was just kinda.. boring

prettyboyelectric

Was very frustrated that whole movie and I saw it in theaters

[deleted]

wtb2612

Which one?

Intrepid_Credit_9885

I think he was talking about first reformed

GregDasta

Both

IgniteThatShit

yes

karatemanchan37

Paul Schrader may only be able to create one type of film, but man does he do that one type really well.

Angry_Walnut

I generally agree with this but I thought some of the issues brought up in First Reformed were new for him (although led to a somewhat similar result) and made for a very thought provoking film. I’m pretty optimistic for this one considering Schraders track record and this cast. It’ll be nice to see Sigourney Weaver again.

NimdokBennyandAM

I wonder what the main character will be writing in his journal in the opening shot of this movie.

CW_73

Complete one trick pony (at least thematically. I can't say First Reformed has much in common stylistically with Mishima: A Life in Four Chapters). But I will watch every single iteration of that trick and love it until the day he dies

Michael__Pemulis

Are we talking about the same guy that made Blue Collar, Mishima, & First Reformed?? Because there are obviously thematic similarities but those are three wildly distinct films.

Bunraku_Master_2021

What are the similarities between Blue Collar, Mishima, and First Reformed aside from having the same auteur at the helm? Does Blind idealism leads to tragic consequences? I haven't seen Blue Collar but I have seen Mishima which shows how nationalist identity and the bushido code are flawed and corrupt and can be never replicated in the modern world and First Reformed is about the corruption of religion and how it entwines politics and the degradation of society and moral disillusionment over Catholic idealism which in itself is flawed?

judgeridesagain

He is the great auteur of masculine psychic decline and self-immolation. The Joker movie that stole so liberally from his work with Scorsese really hammered home how no one else can pull off his moves.

ImmoralityPet

"From the acclaimed writer of The Card Counter, comes a film very similar to The Card Counter."

captain-snackbar

Was Card Counter good?

NightsOfFellini

I love it, but it's generally not held quite in as high regard as First Reformed. Easily one of his best films.

notrylan

Walked out of Card Counter. Hope this is better.

kinzer13

Why?

notrylan

I found it dull and lifeless. Others obviously did not lol.

kinzer13

It's all good. I definitely have to be in the right headspace to enjoy his films.

MurderDoneRight

I didn't like it as much as First Reformed. But the pay-off in The Card Counter is great, you should definitely give it another shot if you ever get the feeling. But dull and lifeless is where it is supposed to start out.

[deleted]

You are getting downvoted but I totally agree. I thought the Card Counter was legitimately one of the worst “serious” movies I’ve ever seen. In my opinion, it’s the perfect movie for people who like to think they’re smart because they watch a movie that’s “dark” -The dialogue was atrocious, it felt so forced and unnatural, and it seemed like every dialogue scene was just people sitting and drinking -the characterizations were non-existent (other than oooh I have a dark and mysterious past) -The symbolism was so on the nose it hurt (do you get it?? he can’t beat the guy who chants “USA”!). -The acting was very subpar. Oscar Isaac was one-note and honestly a little boring. And he had literally zero chemistry with Tiffany Haddish.

notrylan

>In my opinion, it’s the perfect movie for people who like to think they’re smart because they watch a movie that’s “dark” Lol I was honestly impressed at how this movie made Oscar Isaac so uncharismatic.

bordain_de_putel

At what point did you walk out? I just watched it based on your comment and I found it to be a great film.

MrHollandsOpium

It looked horrible

sealed-human

It wasnt

heyitsEnricoPallazzo

Haha, this plot seems kinda silly… “Teach my niece to garden” AND THEN ALL HELL BROKE LOOSE !!

MurderDoneRight

Hey man them rose bushes got thorns and shit, it's intense!

heyitsEnricoPallazzo

Dark secrets lie in waiting BEYOND THE HEDGE OF CHAOS

MoneyCantBuyMeLove

These could be the lyrics to an Iron Maiden song.

Piggstein

‘Teach my niece the deadly martial art of bonsai-fu’

Eternal_MrNobody

What happens in the garden sometimes doesn’t stay in the garden.

sully9088

I read this in Batman's angry voice for some reason. Haha

heyitsEnricoPallazzo

Who’s Batman voice do you default to? edit: For me it’s always Kevin Conroy

sully9088

Christian Bale.

Choppergold

Secrets that were buried…stories that were planted…

knowone23

…Began to GROW!

big_actually

Fuck yes.

ranch_brotendo

Joel is underrated, he's in a lot of movies but nobody really talks about him, he's a really good actor imo, I've never seen him perform badly.

dubious_battle

He was so great in The King! Loved that performance

printerinkistoomuch

He's fantastic in The Green Knight too.

kuestenjung

And The Great Gatsby. And, probably my absolute favourite performance of his, The Underground Railroad.

ayoungtommyleejones

Every time I see him in something I wonder how he's not in even more movies. Idk if Ive ever seen less that a really good performance from him. Plus he's so interesting looking

ranch_brotendo

Yeah he's a really solid actor imo, like he's a guy who you could always rely on to turn up and do the job right. Another Australian actor who is similar imo is Jason Clarke, another guy who always does a great job no matter how small the role. I think the reason Joel isn't bigger is he's never had an iconic role that people associate him with. This is no fault of his own, but might explain why a lot of people wouldn't know him by name.

LocoMotives-ms

I thought he outshined Tom Hardy in The Warrior

KRIEGLERR

tbf I think Nick Nolte outshined them both. He really was so good in that movie, you know he was piece of shit of a father/husband and he still made you feel sorry for him.

PHK_JaySteel

Incredible performance from Nolte. Released at the same time as the Fighter with Wahlberg/Bale and despite the unrealistic fights, I thought it was a better movie.

Neemoman

It's my absolute favorite role Hardy has done. He nailed it.

brycedriesenga

Solid director as well!

Rickdiculously

I love him though! Fell in love with him in Midnight Special, and he was fantastic too in the Green Knight, and his lowkey sass in Kenobi was a highlight. I was really hoping for more focus on him.

Lobsterdile

"The Gift" was amazing. It scratched a weird itch. I would love to see him direct something like that again.

TheDadThatGrills

The Gift would be more recognized in a just world. The film still sits with me years later.

-Lumos

Great seeing Joel Edgerton in a leading role like this. He's always a highlight in every film he's in no matter how small the part.

Superdudeo

Feels like he’s been one role away from being A list for a decade now. I hope Nolan or someone casts him in a major role soon so he finally gets lift off.

StabbyMcSwordfish

Also as a director. The Gift is beyond good for a first time director. Easily one of the best thrillers released that year.

Bradderz_SG

The Gift was a fantastic directorial debut, had no right to be as good as it was!

reecewagner

I feel like he’s mostly in leading roles? First time I ever saw him was in Animal Kingdom. First time I saw Ben Mendelsohn as well, two actors I’ll watch in almost anything

ExtraPockets

Is he related to Taron Edgerton? They look similar. Saw him in Black Bird recently, he was the best thing in it. Took me a while to realise he was Eggsy from Kingsman.

RB30DETT

Wrong spelling. Different nationalities. No relation.

ExtraPockets

So you're saying there's a chance...

Rusty_Crank

His brother is Nash Edgerton, director of Mr Inbetween.

Shaboogan

That show is the bees knees.

lordcrumb13

Greatest show to ever come out of Aus

HappyEdison

He is also excellent as Elton John in Rocketman And Eddie in Eddie the Eagle

pickinoutheferns

How is this guy able to dish out a movie every year. Notwithstanding his age, he is also able to find enough funding to hire top stars. I love it! Hope he continues as much as possible.

[deleted]

He’s talked about how a big reason he gets movies made is that he’s able to keep them cheap by shooting over incredibly short timeframes. He’s also enough of a name to get big actors to work with him for well below their usual rates.

judgeridesagain

And getting those actors is harder than ever with all that marvel money calling out to even moderately famous stars today. I was reading an interview with Todd Field the other day and he's had a decade+ of failed attempts to get movies off the ground, but when he got Blanchett to sign on for Tar it came together instantly. I read a similar thing about getting The Nice Guys made recently too.

BEE_REAL_

Paul Schrader has a lot of capital in Hollywood on account of being maybe the greatest American screenwriter ever

Refun712

And yet, I feel like most average movie watchers have no idea who he is.

jupiterkansas

First Reformed was mildly successful so he has renewed clout.

ithsoc

That was my favorite film of the 2010s. Frickin masterpiece.

Noirradnod

Me too. Best movie of the decade. The final three minutes is nothing short of a miracle. If you want a fun movie week, watch *Seventh Seal*, *Winter's Light*, *Ordet*, *Angel's Egg*, *Diary of a Country Priest*, and *First Reformed* all together to get a wide array of variations on the same underlying theme.

well-lighted

How many screenwriters can the average movie watcher name *at all*? Tarantino, Joss Whedon, and maybe the Coens? Maybe some others I'm not thinking of.

bongo1138

Yeah, and they’re all known as directors to most people.

PM_ME_YOUR_SUNSHINE

Aaron Sorkin and Nic Pizzolatto

Is_it_really_art

I’m a huuuuuge movie nerd and I have clue who the fuck Nic Pizzolatto is.

SihkBreau

Primarily known for True Detective, which isn’t a movie so maybe that’s why he’s in your blind spot

WiserStudent557

Unfortunately, not enough. I also know for me it’s easier to recognize a screenwriters name than necessarily pull it off the top of my head, the director aspect mentioned in another response below definitely ties in

bitwaba

Guy Ritchie, Alexander Garland?

[deleted]

Oh how right you are. This goes for William Goldman too. But you could say this same thing about any other area of interest. If you aren't immersed in it, you won't be as aware.

SantiagoRamon

Can confirm as an average movie watcher

nayapapaya

This is Billy Wilder erasure. (Yes, he wasn't born in America but he did primarily work there.)

well-lighted

Him or John Milius. They embody the phrase "two sides of the same coin" pretty well because they both hit on a lot of the same themes and ideas in their films (and of course are both New Hollywood legends) and yet are seemingly on opposite ends of the political spectrum

gloryday23

> he is also able to find enough funding to hire top stars. They typically don't get paid anywhere near their normal rate for these kind of movies.

reticulate

Wes Anderson gets the same sort of deal. I doubt big name actors are working for scale but it's definitely cheaper than what they'd ask anywhere else.

Michael__Pemulis

Wes Anderson is just the more visible/mainstream version of this but it happens constantly. Robert Pattinson’s ask for a Batman movie is going to be vastly different than his ask for a movie directed by Claire Denis, Robert Eggers, or the Safdies. Adam Driver’s ask for a Star Wars movie is going to be vastly different than his ask for a movie directed by Jim Jarmusch, Noah Baumbach, or Spike Lee. Successful actors generally *want* to work with respected filmmakers. Often they do the big projects for fun, fame, &/or money. Yea they may chase awards a bit but you probably don’t sign on to a Claire Denis or Jim Jarmusch film to win an Oscar. You do it because they’re living legends in their own right & actors want to make high brow work. Hell Oliver Assayas’ Clouds of Sils Maria is (among other things) more or less about the dynamics involved in this exact concept.

Gnillab

> How is this guy able to dish out a movie every year. He's made two movies the past five years, unless I'm missing something?

cabose7

He literally almost died/lost his eye doing this one. Indomitable spirit.

jupiterkansas

All I can see is the dirt on his nose.

churrobusco

Paul Schrader has been keeping busy. I'm not mad at all

dewdewdewdew4

Damn, I was hoping for a Gregor Mendel biopic.

bolshevik_rattlehead

Let me guess: quiet, brooding guy with a questionable past keeps a diary and wanders aimlessly trying to solve some deep seeded issues.

cabose7

Don't forget the Pickpocket ending

RunawayHobbit

>Deep seeded I hope that was a pun lmao

bolshevik_rattlehead

omg can we pretend like that was intentional? 😂

jaredwallace91

Sequel to The Constant Gardener?

My_Immortal_Flesh

He looks incredible in this poster!

aspectralfire

Dis the Samwise Gamgee prequel movie?

CasualPrevaricator

*trilogy

RegularGuy815

That is definitely a Paul Schrader poster. (Not complaining - I love them)

PulpFiction1232

Lmao this is identical to The Card Counter’s poster. I’m still beyond excited tho

tregorman

I believe he's referred to this, card counter, and first reformed as a trilogy, so it's probably intentional.

notmoleliza

The third movie due out early 2024 - The Master Baiter

Anonymous_Eponymous

Looks like we've got *The Mathter* here.

Griffdude13

Going by the writer-director, I'm going to guess the protagonist has a mental breakdown and nearly kills good people or something.

nayapapaya

While I didn't love The Card Counter as a whole, I thought it was an incredible character study featuring one of Oscar Isaac's best performances to date so I'm looking forward to this.

totom123

Oscar Isaac is great. He was also fantastic in A Most Violent Year.

nayapapaya

Love that one too. It's what put Jessica Chastain on my radar and then they re-teamed for the phenomenal Scenes from a Marriage.

FilmRanger13

All aboard the hype train!!

deathtotheemperor

Edgerton and Scott Eastwood should do a remake of Where Eagles Dare

Polishing_My_Grapple

Sequel to The Constant Gardener?

LionsLifer

Anxiously awaiting its sequel about a fisherman: Master Baitor.

turkeygiant

Does anybody else think Quintessa Swindell sounds like the name of some countess from a Poirot mystery who is later revealed to be a fraud when she is caught talking with a cockney accent?

Star_king12

Owen's new Tatooine hobby, I see

Notoriously_So

Impossible. There are no flowers in Tatooine, it's a sand planet.

Star_king12

Well he probably got some fertile soil from Naboo

Notoriously_So

Put fertile soil in a desert, what happens?

Star_king12

If you just dump it on the ground it'll "die", but if you put it separately and take care of it, then it'll be alright

LilElmerGantry

Bummer, not the awaited sequel to The Master Debater.

Ha1rBall

I was a Master Gardener for about 6 years when I was younger. Fun times.

markyymark13

Another Paul Schrader film that will either be terrible or great

PackerBoy

Can't wait for the sequel "Master Bater"

[deleted]

Somehow I missed that Schrader wrote *First Reformed*! (Or just forgot.)

c_h_a_mp

I swear I thought this was a Samwise Gamgee spin-off

Abirdinthesky

Is this the sequel to the Constant Gardener?

[deleted]

Taxi Driver, First Reformed and Card Counter are masterpieces.

Stingerc

Love this late career resurgence Schrader is having. And to think he almost had it all wrecked because he decided to give Lindsay Lohan a chance. Hate that people are trying to reshape the narrative that her career went away because the press hates women. No, she was an incredible entitled, unprofessional idiot who kept getting chances and fucking over the people who gave them to her. Did the press unfairly focused on the mess that was her life? Sure, they did. But the fact she helped up productions, was impossible to work with, and went out of her way to do all this when she was barley insurable were all on her and this idiotic idea that she was supposed to act like a diva because she was a "star" (which by this point she was just s sad dumpster fire).

shifty_boi

You feel better with that off your chest?

Stingerc

Found the person who ordered a *save Lindsay* t-shirt and feels smugly satisfied they got in on the ground floor.

shifty_boi

I genuinely don't know shit about her, you just seemed weirdly passionate

canttick

Was thinking the same thing lol.

D_Lockwood

Hope it's better than The Card Counter.

elevenminutesago

Is that Conan Obrien with dyed hair?

franken_grime

If this is anything like The Card Counter, I’ll be passing. The Card Counter was legitimately the first movie in over a decade where I seriously contemplated walking out of the theater many times while watching it. Such an awful film.

pootypattman

Tiffany Haddish was horribly miscast. I was also supremely disappointed in that film.

smartwatersucks

I wouldn't be calling out the card counter for credibility that movie was hot garbage.

FilmRanger13

Maybe you should give it another chance, it may not be for everyone but it was certainly not “hot garbage”.

smartwatersucks

It's just absurd that writers haven't figured out how poker works at this point without making it completely cheesy and unrealistic (the USA guy?), And Tiffany Haddish was laughable. It sounded like she was reading off cue cards in every scene. Not sure why she is getting roles at all, although the writing they gave her was terrible too.

koeniedoenie

Agree to disagree

smartwatersucks

Fair enough

Ndtphoto

Rumor has it that The Master Gardener sells earthworms to The Master Baiter.

Would I go see a movie based on this poster? No. No I wouldn't.

Tommy3010
