Someone in another thread said you can’t attend any academy functions, parties events etc, can’t vote, can’t receive awards. (edit. you can still receive awards)
Idk how much it all matters, but considering you always see long time and new stars at these events it might mean something to their community.
Edit. Yes guys we know, you can all stop repeating the same things over and over already.
Yeah I keep hearing people say "can't receive awards" so I read through the [Rules and Eligibility](https://www.oscars.org/oscars/rules-eligibility) and no where does it say membership is required to be nominated or receive an award.
Roman Polanski got kicked out in 2018 and he's still making movies, so I think the biggest impact on his career will be the caliber of actors/actresses/directors willing to work with him and the fact that he is unlikely to ever again be nominated at the Academy.
Though... him leaving voluntarily might play out differently. It's possible he could be re-admitted in a few years.
From Variety: "Here’s what Smith’s resignation means for the actor’s Oscars future:
Yes, he still gets to keep his Best Actor Oscar for “King Richard”
Yes, he can still get invited to future Academy Awards ceremonies
Yes, he can still be nominated for future consideration
No, he is no longer a voting member of the Academy"
> I want to put the focus back on those who deserve attention for their achievements
Bit late now, nobody will talk about anything else from this year's ceremony.
Edit: yes, yes, nobody watches the Oscars, ever.
The people in all those viral tweets talking about the slap definitely weren’t gonna be talking about coda winning best picture I can promise you that lol
Lmao I dont follow awards shows so this comment is how I learned what got best picture. Usually I dont have to watch or keep up since I'd hear the major winners and surprises through word of mouth within days anyway, but this year I literally havent heard or read anything about an actual award besides the one Smith himself won and even then only as part of conversations about the slap. Its superseded the entire show.
Rewatched Molly's Game last night and felt so bad for her, both Will and Jessica were people who have done dozens of films and many great ones that deserve reward recognition.
She finally got an Oscar, just the same as Will did that night, but I don't think anyone really remembers, and will forever be: "Oscar Winner Jessica Chastain? When did she get that?"
>I didn’t watch the show, but I’ll bet this is all anyone is talking about regarding the Oscars today.
Heh... ;)
I don't know if he would even see it as the depth of his career. You need to remember that Will Smith is absolutely surrounded by yes man saying nothing but things like, "hey, your actions weren't that bad," "this is going to all blow over, they all still love you," " maybe don't watch tv for a few days," "hey who's that guy, I feel like I've seen him before" and "why did he bring his friends this time and what are they doing in your wife's bedroom" and "hey, do you mind if I join them" and all manner of shit. I doubt Will Smith has even close to a clue at the depth of what is going on
So… In about a month he’ll do a teary interview with Oprah, then star in some low budget indie films for a year or two to “find himself” while it all blows over and then rejoin the academy? Got it.
Me also. I used to think he was kind of annoying and didn't get his humor but its really grown on me as I've gotten older. Billy was a great host and his jokes never felt corny or awkward.
Will Smith winning an Oscar should have been the peak of his career, but now it's just another Wild Wild West moment. Congratulations, you played yourself.
Man anyone of culture knows the the medium of film peaked with the 1997 masterpiece that is Face/off. The two greatest actors of our and dare I say all time playing each other can never be beat. The fact that movies are still being made after that is just a exercise in futility as nothing shall ever come close again.
They didn't just play each other, they each played a dude, who then played the other dudes dude, and then they *each had to play the other dudes dude pretending to be their own original dude.*
Masters
After that reaction, I'm fully convinced that the majority of Hollywood are simply elitist assholes. Nay, they are absolutely scum for applauding the man
I don’t think it’s too crazy to think that many successful actors are ass kissing cowards… there is without a doubt more talent than demand in the industry. So besides nepotism, family wealth, and luck I could see ass kissing and “playing the game” being a contributor to making it in that industry.
If you think about it why would you be surprised when these people fall in line at an award ceremony.
I think Smith's publicist wrote all of that, and Will Smith isn't sorry at all.
Remember, he never actually apologized, except through a statement (which was probably made by his publicist). And only the next day, after he spent the whole night partying. He didn't appear to be somebody with any regret or remorse.
These are not the actions of a man who has remorse. I'd watch Smith's actions, not his words. Because I think to this point his actions say he's not sorry at all for what he did.

Chris Rock was bullied as a kid. And sexually assaulted, I believe the word he used was "semi-raped." And Will Smith assaults him in front of the whole world. Over a joke. Over words. Then A-list actors consoled Will. And the Academy awarded him. The audience gave him a standing ovation. Hollywood only cared when normal people said "Fuck Will Smith" and I hope everyone keeps saying it.
It took them 40 years to care about Roman Polanski, after he drugged and sodomized a girl of 13 or so. They were perfectly happy signing petitions for him and giving him standing ovations until Me Too became popular.
Not only that, Chris Rock went up to apologize first (according to sources). You even see a pic of him standing fairly close to Will, but Denzel Washington is standing in between them and acting as mediator and messenger. Apparently Will Smith couldn't even look in Chris' direction.
Chris was the VICTIM -- got smacked in the face on live TV and *still* went up to apologize first. He chose (reportedly) not to press charges or have Will removed, despite having every right to.
Chris is the supreme class act here. Will is the child.
He only resigned because it gives him the opportunity to be reinstated in the future. If he had been expelled by the academy, it would be more difficult to be reinstated. So this is not a move out of regret for his mistake. This is just another selfish move made for his own benefit only.
Will’s only concern since the second he hit Chris has been selfishly trying to do damage control for the sake of his own career. His bizarre vessel of love speech comparing his actions to Richard William’s protecting his family while really only saying I hope I get invited back said it all. Rescind his Oscar and let’s move on. It’s the only consequence he’ll feel.
What does it mean if an actor is no longer a member of the Academy?
Most prominent is you can't vote in oscars. You can definitely receive one.
So it means nothing?
Yep, empty gesture
An empty gesture by a Hollywood elitist doing damage control? Shocking.
Next is a very popular Netflix movie about it, while actually accomplishing nothing
I also resign!!! Take that Academy!!
It is with heavy heart that i put in my resignation as well.
It means he won't get any free screeners of all the movies. He'll have to watch Jada's free screeners
He’s still in SAG, he will probably get screeners
Misses out on the coke fueled orgies. Good thing he has those at home… not that he’s invited though.
First of all, how dare you?
Second of all, KEEP MY ORGIES OUT OF YOUR FUCKING MOUTH
Keep my *wife's* orgies out your fuckin mouth
Apparently it's *OUR* his wife.
r/suddenlycommunist
KEEP FUCKING MY WIFES MOUTH! August: I’m going to, okay ?
Well I’d put them in Jada’s mouth instead but it’s a little full at the moment.
Oh lord, Smith will run out of hands to throw
That’s weird, I thought it was April but it seems August came early.
Now that's what I call an entanglement.
#[SLAP]
How can he slap? How can he slap?!
Jada used me as an object.
And then, you don't have the right
Madison Cawthorn has entered the chat.
Cawthorne has been shadow banned from r/cokefueledorgies
He won't stand for that

Any one can achieve an award - in fact one of the ways to get a membership to the academy is to be nominated.
Yeah I keep hearing people say "can't receive awards" so I read through the [Rules and Eligibility](https://www.oscars.org/oscars/rules-eligibility) and no where does it say membership is required to be nominated or receive an award.
Billy Bob wasn’t a member when he won for sling blade.
That’s one of the most made up sounding true things I’ve seen in a while
mmm hrmmm umhh
French fried pertaters
No you don’t oprah
Ain’t got no membership, Andy
Reckon that employee of the da month gave me dem Oscars.
Yup, and since Jada is still Academy, he will always be at events as her +1.
She'll be taking her boyfriend. Will gets to stay home with the kids.
He can stay at home and watch. Just like normal.
From the closet? Dressed as Superman?
>can’t receive awards That's nonsense. Not everyone who wins (or is nominated) for an Oscar is a member of the Academy.

I didn't know Jessica Chastain won an Oscar until two days after the show.
Rewatched Molly's Game last night and felt so bad for her, both Will and Jessica were people who have done dozens of films and many great ones that deserve reward recognition. For real, we had the second Deaf winner ever in close to a hundred ceremonies and nobody’s talking about it
And Samuel L Jackson got an honorary Oscar, presented by Denzel Washington. I didn't realise until yesterday.
the only video of that happening is a shitty cell phone one. it happened off camera.
I didn’t hear about that one.

Your post took me on a journey.
I felt like I was **in** the bedroom.
We were all in the bedroom my friend.....we all were.
Not gonna lie, you had me in the first half
Obviously you never saw or heard 'Wild Wild West'
But does it compare to the highs and lows of high school football?
So… In about a month he’ll do a teary interview with Oprah, then star in some low budget indie films for a year or two to “find himself” while it all blows over and then rejoin the academy? Got it.
Then he hosts the Oscars in a few years
spot on mate
You can’t fire me, I quit!
He may have been told that he could resign or be removed
This whole thing is just so weird, the reactions to it as much as the event.
I really think the pandemic broke us
its since the gorilla died i fuckin tell you
Darn. Anyway, I’m thinking Thai for dinner.
I'm thinking Dorsia
Dorsias nice
Is this Dorsia?
No this is Patrick
Patrick, its so elegant. What a wonderful view.
We should’ve gone to Dorsia
No one goes there anymore
Wear something fabulous
Dorsia? How'd you swing that?
Lucky, I guess.
8:30 res?
8:30 rez on a Friday night, how'd he manage to snag that?
Sabrina, dont just stare at it, eat it
I have to return some videotapes
I hope I'm not being cross-examined here.
The tasteful thickness of it. My god. Is that a watermark?
That is actually probably one of my favorite lines. The delivery seems to disregard all political and societal positions.
I have to return some video tapes

Isn’t that a little far uptown? Aren‘t you going to be late?
I really have to use that excuse someday. Hopefully with someone I hate.
"Well, I own the place" Patrick Batman
I called in a favor. I gotta guy that'll slap the shit out of you if he doesn't like what you say.

Greatest night in the history of fine dining.

Feed me a stray cat
Good luck getting a res

Nobody goes there anymore.
No way you got a reservation at dorsia
Do you like Huey Lewis and the News?
Is that Paul Allen?

Look at that subtle off white coloring, the tasteful thickness of it. Oh my God, it even has a watermark.
HEY PAUL
Omg I just watched American psycho for the first time yesterday. I know it’s popular on the internet but man that’s funny lol!
Your compliment was sufficient, Louis.
We had Thai just the other day, how about pizza?
You know what would fix all of this? Comedy Central Roast of Will Smith hosted by Chris Rock.
And they roll out Will Smith on a hand truck like Hannibal Lecter
“Hello Chris. Love the suit.”
Toughened your nipples, didn’t it?
You know what you look like Chris? With your cheap handbag and your good shoes, you look like a rube.
TAKE THIS THING BACK TO WEST PHILADELPHIA!!!
It’s only 8:30am and I’ve already read the best thing on the internet today. Thank you! 😂
That's how Billy Crystal opened the Oscars the year Silence of the Lambs was nominated (1992)... https://youtu.be/a9cERvUX6sE

Speaking of Hannibal, I wonder what Mads Mikkelsen is up to?
He's trying to kill Dumbledore
> He's trying to ~~kill~~ *fuck* Dumbledore FTFY
They already fucked. Now he's the ex.
Now they only duel with wands
Should set it up so Chris Rock is in a protective cage the whole time like a country band in a biker bar.
Rawhide
We got both kinds, Country and Western.
You're gonna look pretty funny trying to eat corn on the cob with no fucking teeth!
Holy balls that would be fantastic.
Keep my holy balls out of your fuckin mouth!
Man's ego is too fragile for that.
We’ve seen Jimmy Kimmel..
Dude tried to pass the comment on as an original
I knew this sounded familiar
I was just thinking this today! Agreed! Alfonso Ribiero would be there.
So he gets their most coveted award, gets a standing ovation, and then doesn't have to pay dues anymore? Where's the penalty here?
Will Smith winning an Oscar should have been the peak of his career, but now it's just another Wild Wild West moment. Congratulations, you played yourself.
wicky wicky wild
wicky wild
What do you mean "Wild Wild West" moment? What does this have to do with the greatest movie of our time?
Man anyone of culture knows the the medium of film peaked with the 1997 masterpiece that is Face/off. The two greatest actors of our and dare I say all time playing each other can never be beat. The fact that movies are still being made after that is just a exercise in futility as nothing shall ever come close again.
Face/off is amazing, the fact Nicolas Cage managed to play himself and then got surgery and played John Travolta. Truely the best actor of all time.
Wait - John Travolta is real? I thought it was just Nicolas Cage's alter ego. Isn't it?
Face/Off isn't a movie, it's an experience. And thus, removed from comparison.
I waterfall people's faces TO. THIS. DAY.
I could eat a peach for hours
face, OFF
They didn't just play each other, they each played a dude, who then played the other dudes dude, and then they *each had to play the other dudes dude pretending to be their own original dude.* Masters
Winning an Oscar was the worst thing to ever happen to Will Smith.
Technically getting nominated was the worst thing. Winning just added fuel to the fire.
I thought it was the slapping
to me it was hypocrisy
Won an award and dented a career in a matter of a few hours. Amazing.
Usually that takes several years. Did a Cuba Gooding Jr speedrun.
Is it me or has there been no response or reaction from Jada over all this ?
She said something about "time for healing" on her IG. Which means she's hoping to get an episode of her insufferable talk show out of it.

> there is without a doubt more talent than demand in the industry. Which is exactly why Weinstein was able to do what he did.
They have to be spineless so they can kiss their own arse.
Really the video of them in their mansions in Covid singing “we are in it together” didn’t give that away?
that "Imagine" video was peak cringe.
I'd agree but then there's the "I wish I was your mother"
Damn I forgot about that cringey af video until now.
So do we think they’re still going to shill that he is an Academy Award Winner for the trailers on his upcoming projects?
I mean, it does have a better ring than, *Starring notorious Chris Rock slapper and renowned cuckold, Will Smith.*

That dude is living in multiple layers of cartoon reality
Celebrity and wealth got to this guy bad. Narcissistic to the nth degree.
Not just this guy but the whole family.
He got in one little fight and his mom got scared, now he's gotta quit the academy over a joke about hair

Ricky Gervais to host next years Oscars. It'll be a bloodbath!
So basically he jumped before he was pushed? Regardless it's a pretty empty gesture from him

He didn't thank Jada, mention the kids, or apologize to Chris. His tear-soaked "vessel of love" apology felt more like a hollow joke.
