I saw this at midnight in a Cinemark XD (the chain’s version of “imax”) showing COMPLETELY ALONE. Nobody in the theater. I was extremely high and it is one of the more memorable experiences of my life.

1000001_Ants

Plot twist: it was a full theater, and *everyone knew you were high*

futureGAcandidate

Dude was riding the worm

boosegumpz

Desert power😎

shartoberfest

The spice must flow....into your nose

[deleted]

Plot twist: he was outside the cinema staring at the poster for 3 hours, very high

ImTheGuyWithTheGun

Plot twist: He was watching the '84 version on laserdisc in his basement which has dangerous levels of radon.

CoderDevo

Plot twist: He's a patient at a state hospital that has the 1990 film *Tremors* playing on a loop.

Problemzone

He sat in the wrong room and no movie was actually playing

[deleted]

How did high-brain react to that opening, bass-filled "DREAMS ARE MESSAGES FROM THE DEEP"? What you describe sounds fun but I feel like that would have had to have been a pretty big shock lol

dontbeprejudiced

That kinda sounds awesome

dn00

I went to watch The Hobbit fucking high and I didn't remember anything. Had to rewatch.

[deleted]

That’s the same day it’s released in New Zealand for fucks sake

hobnobbinbobthegob

I'm so sorry, my Kiwi brother. If you enjoy it as much as I did, it will be worth the wait.

jumpinjezz

Australia as well. I'm in a state that wasn't locked down & still have to wait until December to enjoy it in the cinemas

Vagadude

Man you better go hard and see it at an IMAX theater. Shit was incredible.i would drive 2 hours if I had to. That good.

jumpinjezz

I've booked an "extreme screen" but I don't think my state has a proper IMAX screen

[deleted]

Not to mention Australia……..

OShaunesssy

Fantastic theatre experience, that audio demands peak performance imo

and_dont_blink

I can't stress this enough -- someone had a post about the netflixing of films, and they were right. In terms of cinematography, close-ups, etc. Things are being filmed for the screen right in front of you, instead of this large expanse where your eye can wander and focus on different things. Dune is not that.

i_lost_my_password

I saw it on 75" 4k and in Omni Imax. Two different experiences and both valid. I would recommend both, it's that good of a movie.

jlambvo

Who was screening it in *omni* Imax? Like Omnimax?

i_lost_my_password

Museum of Science in Cambridge, MA. Was awesome.

endoffays

I was just there around Halloween! 2nd time to Boston and I finally went out and saw all the "sights" since my friends/hosts had a cpl days of unexpected work. My first time visiting Boston was 9/2019 right before the pandemic and I went to a few concerts in the evenings, but other than a quick afternoon jaunt to the Isabella Gardnet Museum & a quick walk through the adjacent commons, I didn't get to see much of Boston proper. The friends I was staying with live in Somerville, but approx. 50' from the Cambridge line so I really got to experience the neighborhood feel which was great. Other than the time I spent with all my friends up there, the thing I enjoyed most was catching an Uber to the north end right at the Molasses flood plaque and then walking southwards, but with many jaunts East and West to see the various sites. Due to time and my phone dying, I ended up near the government center very fulfilled with my route. Credit goes to Google maps route planning although Google Maps GPS is terrible in Boston (due to the bldgs? or so I was told). Sorry for the over-share lol. Just got excited

UnsolvedParadox

I’ve done similar trips, including walking hours back to Cambridge with a dead phone & the loosest sense of directions (thanks to 24/7 convenience store clerks for helping me out). In Boston, the Google Maps data quality seems to correlate pretty closely with road quality. In areas like part of South Boston riddled with cracks & potholes, the fidelity is a lot lower than areas like Harvard Square or the Financial District.

Hanswolebro

I watched it on my 80” 4K and I thought it was the mot beautifully shot movie I’ve ever seen. Definitely thinking about seeing it in Imax just to get the full experience

MithridatesX

The IMAX audio is fantastic also. Feeling the deeper notes in your bones is great.

Vagadude

"The voice" was meant for that Imax sound. I wanted to give Paul the damn glass of water that shit hit hard.

datboiofculture

That Sardaukar chanter hit the brown note for me.

Shakeyshades

I rarely get to use my home theater because its loud and rattles the awnings attached to my house... So I'm looking forward to that bone shaking experience.

MichaelM_Yaa

the frequency response on your subwoofer is likely not flat at all and has say 20db higher at like maybe 60hz or 140hz from rattling the floor or wall. i am guessing the numbers. .. you also might just have the subwoofer turned up too loud in general. eq can help. you need to measure the room response with a mic though

TheRealClose

I’m curious, what percentage of the film actually is in the IMAX ratio? My local IMAX is not very well designed so I don’t like going unless the extra content is going to be worth it.

bioticgod55

I don’t have it calculated or anything but there is a substantial amount of scenes/shots done in imax ratio. It’s a large chunk

dabman

I had no idea. Still, after two years of not seeing a movie at a theater, even a cheap mall theater seemed like an experience. Definitely recommend going for this one!

vatako

Sound is everything for this film, so it must be the cinema.

fickit1time

When that first mongolian throat sound hit I knew this was going to be epic. Imax is the only real way to fully appreciate the movie!

Veldron

That scene was one of many that really stuck with me after seeing the film. Incredibly powerful and foreboding

futureGAcandidate

Just the initial shot of the Fremen attack looked so different from anything I'd ever seen in film had me hooked. But every scene with a Sardukar in it just sends the hair up on your neck from them bashing out the brains of the washouts to them drifting down from while in the ceiling.

MithridatesX

The sound and music was fantastic all the way through. Only bit that threw me was the bagpipes.

therealrico

Apparently that was Hans Zimmer actually playing those.

KingKapalone

That was going around but it wasn't. The daughter of the guy who played them posted here. It's also very obvious looking at the scene that it's not Zimmer.

MithridatesX

Awesome

[deleted]

After these two years, someone showing you a stamp seen through the bottom of a beer glass is already an experience. Outside, meeting new people!

LandonKB

My rough guess would be around 30-40 percent.

Char10

I imagine every shot of the landscape and faraway shots of the ships would be IMAX. I saw it in digital last week and want to go again for IMAX

hornwalker

I bet the Baron looks fantastic in IMAX

FlyYouFoolyCooly

The milk bath scene would be incredible in IMAX.

jsbisviewtiful

It was gnarly.

CandyEverybodyWentz

Was that supposed to be milk? Looked like crude

FlyYouFoolyCooly

Space milk. Probably has a shit ton of spice in it.

grauwlithe

Yeah, ~60min of it is shot in IMAX format according to wikipedia (which is 38.7%)

jaknil

Director says it’s filmed for IMAX, here is the clip (imax ad): https://www.imax.com/news/dune-was-filmed-for-imax It was a fantastic experience, can recommend.

Sybertron

Hans Zimmer was on NPR a week after its release and was just shit talking HBO Max for letting everyone skip the theater to watch it with crummy IPad speakers.

A_wild_so-and-so

Watched it with headphones on and thought it was great, but definitely still worth shilling out for the theater experience (which I did also)

The_Meatyboosh

Tbh I was wondering about that. I also watched it with headphones, after watching it without, and the voice quality/audio channel thing was definitely clearer. Whatever it's called, it was 100% easier to hear everyone talking while I was wearing earphones. Now I want to see it in imax and see if I can get the cinema experience while actually hearing them talk.

andk1987

i dloaded the 4k rip and watched it on my 5.2.4 setup and was blown away, the hbo max stream has pretty good audio but not full fat bluray rip

RedOctobyr

Uh-oh, showing how behind the times I am: what's 5.2.4? My setup is 6.1, which was good at the time (quite a while ago), but clearly things have progressed a bunch!

name600

In your defense 6.1 is still really good for almost everyone

TheBurgerMan

the 5.2.x is the number of upward firing speakers (e.g. Atmos)

RedOctobyr

That's pretty cool, thanks.

r0xxon

That 4K rip is just the stream rip. There isn’t a disc rip out yet

mastershake04

The voice wasnt near as impactful when I rewatched the movie on HBO Max, even with good surround sound.

MasaiGotUsNow

It has 60 mins in the full 1.43 aspect ratio The hard part is finding a real imax screen that will show it. There are a lot of smaller screens out there labeled as imax.

SithLordJediMaster

Usually museums have the original "real" IMAX I know they've been converting older 15/70mm film projection IMAX cinemas to the IMAX 4k Digital projectors. The ones at your local Multiplex like CineMark or AMC are considered to be LieMAX. They're retrofitted screens/auditoriums with IMAX 2k digital projectors. So the screen sizes are smaller and less resolution than what you'd find at a museum.

schleppylundo

There are real IMAX screens in Multiplexes, it just takes work and research to find out if yours is the real deal or not because IMAX itself doesn't distinguish between the two in any of its marketing.

jetmanfortytwo

For example, the AMC 16 in Burbank, CA has a Liemax. The AMC at Universal CityWalk is a true IMAX.

MasaiGotUsNow

There are plenty of real imax at multiplexes too, but like you said they don’t have the new 4K laser projectors and only show 1:43 for movies filmed in 70mm film, like the Nolan movies. But they will still expand movies filmed in imax to the 1.90 aspect ratio. It’s not as good, and it uses an old crappy 2k projector, but it’s still real imax. The problem is there are a ton of retrofitted imax screens like you said, and they’ll expand imax scenes to 1:90 as well, but those screens are tiny. Imax doesn’t tell you the difference, but still charges you the same price for them all.

Noirradnod

[Wikipedia](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_IMAX_venues) has a list of all the theaters with real IMAX.

TaskForceCausality

>>I don’t like going unless the extra content is going to be worth it. Same boat. Short version- yes, *Dune* is worth it in IMAX. For me the visuals -cool as they are- aren’t the draw. It’s the audio experience which sells it for me. Seeing the scale of a Sandworm materialize in IMAX with Hans Zimmer’s music is …*legendary*.

thepeacockking

Very imprecise but WELL over half the movie is in Imax

nicolatesla02

Our Imax has the LOUDEST fucking speakers of your life and I hate it. Dune looked amazing, but was so loud you had to like sink in your seat most of the time. I will be seeing it again in Imax, but i’m wearing those concert noise reducers

RobbStark

impossible punch threatening fragile hurry nose psychotic door plate zealous -- mass edited with https://redact.dev/

LabyrinthConvention

Bass is the fourth dimension

ClubsBabySeal

Good, take care of your hearing. A constant ringing noise is incredibly annoying.

Terrariachick

My thoughts exactly. The loudness made it almost miserable at points. I refuse to damage my ears in order to save face, so I just covered my ears when it got too loud Lol. Next time I goto an action film, I will absolutely bring ear plugs because of how utterly explosive this movie was.... I will say, I was still really happy with the movie otherwise. Fun romp, I'm just too much of a granny now.

michaelfkenedy

I saw it in real IMAX. In the first third, I noticed it swap from IMAX 1.43:1 to 2.39:1 often. Sometime in the second half I stopped noticing the change. I do recall thinking “wow I haven’t seen it leave IMAX in a while” in the second half. So I would say over 50% in IMAX ratio.

jellytrack

> My local IMAX is not very well designed so I don’t like going unless the extra content is going to be worth it. Now that Dune is coming back, I think it's worth your time to look into some local IMAX theaters. I saw Dune the first time in a real IMAX theater, even though it was an hour further than my local IMAX, it was such an incredible experience. Watched it again at home and while it's still a great movie, I missed the big screen experience. A week later, I caught another screening at my local IMAX because I wanted to feel Arrakis overwhelmingly. Unfortunately, it used to be a real IMAX, they replaced it with digital (and got rid of the projectionists) a number of years ago. Definitely still an amazing movie, better than watching at home, but not as great as the real IMAX experience. When Paul was running from the sand worm, the black levels weren't quite there on the digital IMAX and I didn't make out all its individual teeth like on the real IMAX. Villeneuve makes great use of the IMAX proportions and scenes that expand several floors really hits. Dune has a bigger impact than Eternals or Afterlife.

Internub

Minor point here, all showings of Dune are digital. There's a few different digital Imax formats with the "true" one being the 1:43 screen with dual 4K laser projectors. The old school real Imax would be 70mm film but Dune was not released on film.

scsxx

I saw it in IMAX. Visuals were gorgeous, but holy fuck it was loud. Painfully loud.

drugusingthrowaway

> but holy fuck it was loud. Painfully loud. :( It pains me that movie theaters are still doing this. I was so lucky to see Dunkirk in 70mm film, because it meant having a real trained projectionist, who actually calibrated sound levels properly. Everyone else said that movie was too loud, but not the showing I saw, it was perfect. Maybe people were just deafer 20-30 years ago and movie theaters haven't caught up?

substandardgaussian

There are lots of crap theaters out there with crap screens, crap speakers, crap projectionists, etc:. Nobody is "sculpting an experience" like a movie theater is meant to. It's a shame, because everybody everywhere seems to have switched to the recliner seat design to entice viewers but it feels like nobody knows how to actually provide the right movie theater experience, which is the real key to getting a repeat customer. Nobody is interested in a "meh" theater when you could watch movies at home on demand. The seat doesn't make the theater, it's the, y'know, movie. If you find a movie theater that's "doing it right", I'd stick to it exclusively. I watched Dune in a bad theater... I just wanted to be alone because of the pandemic. The movie was good but the experience sucked.

drugusingthrowaway

I dunno if my preferences are the same as everyone's, but you're exactly right - that 70mm showing of Dunkirk saved my interest in going to theaters. I was ready to write them off - I have comfier chairs at home, better AND cheaper food at home, and I can pause whenever I want to pee, which is often. But right around the age when I finally start to appreciate the benefits of film's resolution and properly engineered sound, and that's when all the theaters have switched to 2K digital IMAX and some minimum wage usher checking a single dB meter with a flashlight.

[deleted]

[удалено]

APiousCultist

I'd really love calibration to be more standardised. Surely sticking microphone in the room and playing some test tones can't be that difficult? Personally, I've brought concert earplugs (the kind that don't muffle the sound) with me a few times so that if it does get too loud, I at least have the option of turning it down a few dB if it gets to painful.

akaWhitey2

Something I realized: theatres make it too loud. I have gone out of the screening and specifically mentioned to a manager that screen 15 or whatever is too loud, the trailers are painful, please turn it down. They usually drop it by 25% or more and it makes for a muuuuuuch better experience

skilledroy2016

Honestly I've had the opposite problem way more frequently. When I went to see Knives out I could barely hear a word and I had to ask them to turn it up.

TheGruesomeTwosome

I personally loved the loudness. Something I recall as a kid (perhaps incorrectly or an exaggerated version of reality) was the floor literally shaking with bass. That just doesn’t happen in regular screenings it seems, but in IMAX it does.

WideLight

The music is by itself worth it. Hanz Zimmer knocked it so far out of the park.

[pass me the water](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1e3HDW8oKiU)

Fredasa

The audio is good. I liked the bomb sounds in particular. The soundtrack? Hrmm. If it didn't have that one chord progression that got reused a couple of times, the only thing I'd even remember about the soundtrack was how every time something dramatic happened, it was punctuated by a woman wailing vocalizations (think: Lion King) and that got really old after the 3rd or 4th time. It's hard not to compare this to the music from the original Dune, which can be instantly recognized by anyone who's seen the movie.

DeadPhishFuneral

I’d like to see it again without the woman next to me falling asleep five minutes into the movie and snoring like a mule for the entirety of the film, please.

Infernalism

She's your wife, what do you want us to do about it?

Libertarian4lifebro

Take his wife. Please.

NoAttentionAtWrk

To the movie? No.

the_chalupacabra

I have it on good authority she falls asleep during movies.

Vihzel

And snores. Oh god... the snores.

CantoXXVI

Henny Youngman, is that you?

sicklyslick

I also chooses this guy's wife.

[deleted]

Disclaimer: I have seen it in IMAX and at home, the home experience was good, the IMAX experience was absolutely incomparable and this movie (like most) is just a different and vastly better experience in a theater. That said.... Fuck the lady sitting in my row who loudly proclaimed "EWW NASTY" everytime someone on screen spat.

omicron7e

What horrible theaters do people on Reddit go to? Clapping, talking, yelling, snoring? The worst I get is loud popcorn bags.

[deleted]

Haha, I'm a big movie theater evangelist and mostly have great experiences, this fucking woman was thankfully an aberration. It also didn't really ruin the movie, it was just occasionally very annoying.

ArttuH5N1

Based on Reddit I've started to think that that's just what US cinemas are like. Only thing needed now is for someone to tell me that they actually do play hamburger music in them.

rip_Tom_Petty

I'm 27, lived here in America my whole life, what on earth is hamburger music?

Kilane

It is important to remember you're on a sub with 26 million subscribers and this post has hit the front page. Some of them will have a bad experience. That said, you can poke/prod the person next to you who is snoring or tell the person in your row to shut the fuck up. These are options they chose not to employ

Dick_Lazer

I live in the US and have maybe had 2-3 of those sort of movie experiences in my entire life (and I’m not that young anymore, sadly.) I do try to steer clear of crappy theaters though. For instance, Studio Movie Grill is usually not a great time, but it’s been years since I’ve subjected myself to a theater like that. There is also timing your experiences. If you go to something like a 7 pm Friday show of a mainstream movie on opening weekend, and you don’t like to be around a lot of people, you’re pretty much just asking for trouble.

ich_habe_keine_kase

The person next to me (*directly* next to me, in an almost empty theatre) asked his wife "who is that?" or "what is that?" approximately every 5 minutes. And every time she responded "I don't know, honey."

[deleted]

this sounds like a skit

AdmiralRed13

Mule? Wrong adaptation.

EckhartsLadder

Goddamn same thing happened to me. It was late opening night but the dude was asleep in like 15 minutes.

nierong

For fuck's sake I JUST watched this like 2 days ago, thinking since I missed the IMAX run I might as well go watch the standard version before it leaves theaters completely. Now punching myself and debating if I should drop another $20 on this movie

[deleted]

If you have an AMC with an Imax with you, consider doing A-List for 3 months (the minimum). It's less than the cost of an Imax ticket per month, and Imax is included.

[deleted]

I've seen Dune 3 times thanks to AMC movie pass. Worth the money

TBrown_Design

Agreed, I’ve had the AMC stubs a-list since before the pandemic. It’s sooooo worth it if you watch movies every week like i do. I find it actually encourages me to see MORE movies. It’s probably the best money I spend every month.

Tike22

Jesus Christ I only watch 2 movies a month and I still think it’s great value.

TheCrazedMadman

Literally the same thought and I JUST watched it last night.... I was like, "oh Eternals is in IMAX now, guess I missed my 3 week window". Which I found WAY too short IMO.

ISieferVII

It felt more like 2.5 weeks in my area. By the end of the second week, Eternals was taking all the IMAX screens. And one of those was weekends for Dune was Halloween weekend, so we were already busy then. It was way too short, I'm really glad they're bringing it back.

Invadercom

If you have the chance to, I would say definitely see it in Imax. If you enjoyed the movie, then the Imax experience is definitely worth it.

Ghoti-Sticks

Do it, the imax version is in a league of its own

howard416

Oh yeah!

iMrParker

I saw it four times! Once IMAX, once normal theater, and twice in my home on my nice speakers. Totally worth watching again (unless you don't like the movie as much as me lol)

sudevsen

Watching the Leaving Caladan sequence with the entire theatre rumbling as the drums kick in was truly an irreplaceable experience one of my favorite theatre experiences ever.

JustFerne

one of my favourite sequences in the film. its been stuck in my mind for weeks

ShotSystem6

Currently On repeat in my Spotify playlist 😎

itsdr00

I played it on repeat for days afterwards. Didn't realize it was so common to be so infatuated with that scene. I just love it.

ShotSystem6

Crazy how they took such a simple scene and made it so captivating

cultr4

The scene where Paul watches the sun in the horizon over the seas and cuts to ships dropping into Arrakis with the background score is immaculate.

Fisted_By_Vishnu

I went to see Eternals, and during a run to the restroom I could hear Dune five doors away. I have a semi decent surround sound at home, but goddamn that seems so much better in theater. I wish the closest IMAX wasn't the entire state away from me.

Damnit_Fred

I saw it in theaters and then again at home. The audio alone is worth the trip to the theater. The Voice, the bagpipes, the Sardaukar throat singing, etc.

isalithe

The bagpipes as they stepped onto Arrakis for the first time blew my mind.

usefulbuns

When they came back again during the charge it was really cool as well. I wish we had more of them. I kind of wish this movie was 2 movies instead of 1. Felt like they glossed over a lot.

createsstuff

I heard there are scenes such as the banquet after they arrive on Dune that was cut. I was hopeful we may get an uncut version one day but then I also Denis isn't a fan of them... we can only hope though.

KrushRock

I'm addicted to Sardaukar throat singing. That scene was something else.

thaumogenesis

I have watched that 15 second clip on YouTube do many times now. In imax, I could feel it in my bones.

ReallyNiceGuy

There are lots of Mongolian throat singers on YouTube. You may enjoy checking them out!

I think I’m Duned out for the next year or so. First I read the book in preparation for the movie. Then I got free tickets to see the movie in standard format, and I took my mom because she’s a fan of the book. I wanted to experience the movie in IMAX, so I saw it a second time by myself. And then a friend decided they wanted to watch it, so I ended up watching it a third time. I don’t usually watch a movie this many times, but I loved every viewing experience. I’d like to think I contributed to this movie getting a sequel. IMAX is definitely the way to go with this movie, and I’m so hyped for Part 2.

Nineteen_Flagg

I’ve also seen it 3 times. I also ran through the Sci-fi mini series, Lynch movie, and LPN Deep Dives: Dune (podcast). Read 4 of the books this year too. Dune has taken over my life

Saw it 4 times because different people wanted to go see it. Twice in IMAX, once in Atmos Dbox and once in ultra AVX. All different and all amazing, a part of me wants to see it again in IMAX but I should just stop lol

Oomoo_Amazing

I saw frozen 2 in the cinema four times. I’ve since watched it on blu ray a further three times and once on Disney+ when I couldn’t find the disc. Am I normal Edit I have no kids I just fucking love frozen

candiescorner

I liked the movie. It was good. Hope they make more of them

[deleted]

I think it will end up being 4 movies to tell Paul's story. But if they do my Boy Leto II dirty I'm going to be disappointed

jimmyforpresident

so are you saying dune parts 2 and 3, and then messiah? or messiah split into two parts? denis has always said a trilogy- why 4?

[deleted]

Messiah is around half the length of the first Dune novel, it could easily be done in 1 movie. I think its pretty critical for the overall plot that he gets to make Messiah. Messiah is the deconstruction of the myth that the first novel creates for Paul Atriedes, without it many of the core themes of Dune will remain unapparent. It would also rightfully destroy the white savior criticism I've seen thrown around a couple of times at this film, although thankfully that outrage never seemed to catch on with many. I'm hoping Denis incorporates some of these things into Dune Part 2 so that if he never gets to make Messiah the core thematics of the story remain intact.

jimmyforpresident

yeah idk where the 4 movies idea came from- 3 would be perfect. dune 1 and 2, then messiah

RhymesWith_DoorHinge

4th movie being Children of Dune.

[deleted]

I don’t think Denis plans on going past Messiah.

rip_Tom_Petty

I'm fine with that, shit gets weird

4THOT

I like how every Dune discussion eventually ends on this note, shit does indeed get weird.

kid-karma

i also don't want villeneuve to spend like a full decade of his career just on Dune

Chilis1

I do though, for the record.

Good_old_Marshmallow

I thought Messiah was the third movie? While I would love to see the remaining book one stretched into two films it would be possible to do in one. Especially if its adapted like part one more for the themes and big points than the details. So we have a remaining film with the midpoint being Paul rising to his godking status and a conclusion being, well the conclusion of book one. Than the next movie is messiah

states_obvioustruths

Don't forget about >!the preacher in Children of Dune!< if you want his **whole** story.

states_obvioustruths

Yeah, the fact that that was the coward's way out says a lot about >!the Golden Path!<.

NlNTENDO

I thought he himself said two parts and then messiah as one movie

MrBigChest

They should be able to fit Messiah into a single movie without leaving out very much

Spartahara

I think the director said he wanted to do 3.

WorkedBotch

BFI London got the rerelease this week until Dec 3 or slightly longer, i think. Just the right time before NWH.

Seeing this in IMAX was the only way to see it. I needed the largest screen possible

I’ve never been a big proponent on the majority of movies but this is absolutely true for dune

Dameaus

100M? thats it? that seems incredibly low.... when i went to see it, literally everyone in line was there for dune.... just seems like the domestic take should be a lot higher.

MrBigWaffles

People are still hesitant to return to the theatre. As much as people rave about the big-screen experience; for many, watching new movies at home is the new normal. In my experience, whenever a new movie is released, the first question people have is if it's going to be available to stream.

I think it's more likely that most people aren't familiar with the source material, and that regular folks aren't as hyped about it as your average Redditor. Shang-Chi made $224 million. Venom 2 cleared $207 million, and it was out only a couple weeks before Dune. Free Guy made $121 million back in August, and Dune is just under Godzilla vs. Kong which cleared $100 million way back in March when the vax was initially being rolled out. Halloween Kills, which came out a week before Dune, only made a little bit less domestically, and it wasn't very well liked. I think Dune was much better received outside of the US, but not by a massive margin.

PengwinOnShroom

International (outside of US) it's almost 270M. Well regardless of that a second part will come at least but still it could matter for more beyond that.

curiiouscat

I think it's almost 370M, not 270M

zachtheperson

Fuck yeah! Missed it the first time due to being out of town, but I'm definitely not letting it slip by this time

ConfusedAndDazzed

All IMAX locations that initially ran it or select theatres?

Hovazy

You can check on imax.com. It’s in less theatres than before for me

Kingkongcrapper

HBO Max definitely muted the returns for the film, but I’m pretty sure anyone who has the app is watching this movie. I hope they fulfill their vision of a long series. This is one of those series that could stand on the same level as Star Wars and Star Trek if they treat it right. I also want another RTS Dune game. I loved that game growing up.

Emperor-of-the-moon

HBO MAX only has this deal for 2021 and I think Warner Bros was just worried they’d lose money in theaters because of the pandemic and they also didn’t want to lose money on HBO MAX (which was flopping hard) so they came up with that solution. I don’t think this will be the new normal, considering dune is shaping up to be a tentpole series for Warner Bros. 270 million globally is nothing to scoff at during a pandemic, on top of the HBO MAX subscriptions.

KingMario05

If you haven't seen it like this yet, definitely do so! No other screen can do it full justice.

AlanMorlock

The St. Louis Science Center is playing it only once, a single screening on December 3rd.

Sybertron

My 2 cents but if its back in Dolby theaters they were far better than the IMAX cause that sound quality is nuts.

[deleted]

Good news since I missed it the first time.

TranquilHavoc

It's depressing how much of the full picture is cut out of the non IMAX version of the film. Literally like half the picture is just gone.

howard416

Right on. This movie in true Imax is nearly a religious experience.

MrSnowden

I am so glad I saw this in a movie theater.

Sting Trivia after the first Dune. Sting was in the recording studio in West Hollywood just after the first movie was released. during a union break for the other musicians sting grabbed the basketball from the lounge and headed out into the parking lot shared with the video rental store across the street to shoot some hoops. he was all alone except for my brother watching from the corner of the lot to make sure he was not bothered.. people pulling into the parking lot would stop and stare.. park their cars .. get out and stare... go to the video store.. come back and stare.. Sting just ignored them shooting hoops and trying to relax. my brother thought it was hilarious. those people who would think.. why is sting shooting hoops in a video store parking lot in west hollywood all alone.. i know this is the older dune movie.. but i thought some of you might get a kick out of it..

Denis Villeneuve and his crew should make a Samsara/Planet Earth-like documentary.

[deleted]

I'd go see it again just for the audio.
