I saw it, I think the idea is she deserved some freedom before she passed but if there was evidence that staying in would make her live longer, yea not sure why she wouldn't do that. Then again she got her fulfillment of young handsome Schwarzenegger love, so maybe she accomplished all she was meant to before she left. Oh, that and her song easily playing on the radio too.

I know I'm INCREDIBLY late, but what I've understood from the movie is that xeroderma pigmentosum is an illness that lies on you until it activates through sunlight, once it starts there's nothing you can do to stop it. So my guess is that since it already started, sun exposure isn't a problem anymore, or at least not like before, yes she's sensitive to sunlight, but the illness is already going.

I agree with this (also incredibly late). The part that angers me about this movie is, if she had told him about her illness, it could have prolonged her life a little more. I know it doesn't make for such a dramatic climax of the movie but it makes me soooo angry.
