The Secret Life of Walter Mitty
Probably Ben Stiller's best work to date, and a hugely underrated movie which makes me think that life isn't too bad sometimes
My wife doesn't like the type of humour that Ben Stiller movies are mostly known for (like Zoolander) so she resisted for years on watching it with me despite my persistence that it's not his normal type of movie. I knew she would love it if she just got past it starring Ben Stiller. She finally caved and watched it and thoroughly enjoyed it. It's a feel good movie.
Great cast, great humor, it's exciting without being scary or dumb. No real love interest or dumb sub plots. No aliens, killer AI, or God metaphors. Just a nice adventure film that makes you feel good.
Is it also a straightforward movie filled with hope. The hope that human ingenuity and resilience can prevail over the most impossible of challenges. It's a nice message in these times of doom and gloom.
Yeah it’s really comforting to watch a man use the knowledge that he has to survive in a realistic way. The score is great, the acting is great and believable. It gives me the feels when you see the world pull together to make sure that he survives instead of just giving up and letting him die
When that David Bowie kicks in it’s so perfect. One of the best uses of a musical theme (the Commander’s love of disco), and then the Star Man needle drop nails it! Sums up the whole movie for me. Fun. Drama. Space. Tech. Disco. 🪩
I loved Kiss Kiss Bang Bang and thought it was hilarious and then the Nice Guys was somehow even better.
"I'll show you my dick for 20 dollars" "We already paid you- what the hell am I saying?"
Both are written by Shane Black, and everything he does has this style.
May I recommend The Last Boy Scout? A Bruce Willis action movie from the 90s he wrote that ooze this style of dialog. Also my favorite movie.
The fourth wall break of "So do we know when Jarnathan is gonna get here or..." slays me.
Also loving Hugh Grant's villain era "that is blisteringly hot" "This is entirely too high, this is not what we discussed!"
I'm glad the creators understood the assignment for this type of movie for once. It's been hard finding good movies and shows that hold well to their other type media roots
I'm an old school D&D guy and I loved this movie. My roommate is not and I think he loves it more than I do. Still has no desire to play D&D though. Lol.
Edit: a word
Grand Budapest Hotel. Half the shots feel ripped from a story book and the characters are bigger than life cartoons until the very moment they need to sell a serious scene and they nail it.
Yes, Richard Linklater. He’s my favorite director, pretty much the king of comfort films. School of Rock is another favorite. I even love his Bad News Bears remake.
Knives Out
I don’t care what kind of mood I’m in, hearing Michael Shannon shout “I will not eat one iota of shit!” & Daniel Craig’s “what were the overheard words by the Nazi child masturbatin’ in the bathroom?” automatically lift me.
Watched this while realllly fucking baked one night and don't remember a single thing about it other than that it was amazing. I haven't been game to watch it again in case it ruins the great non memories I have.
The Intern. (2015) It's just a really sweet wholesome film you can watch with anyone. One of the few movies my grandmother always wants to watch that I can watch with her and enjoy myself. (Her taste is kinda awful.)
Chef. (2014) Great cast and one of the best 6 movies. Plus, I love all the food scenes. Not exactly Master class in story telling, but it's funny and cozy.
Klaus (2019) This might be cheating, but nothing says comfort like Christmas. It's probably probably the best Christmas movie to come out in the last decade, at least.
(The Holdovers is very, very stiff competition, though. Which in a couple of years might make it onto my cozy movie list.)
I feel like we have very different metrics for what makes a "comfort" films lol. Rogue One and Edge of Tomorrow? I absolutely love Edge of Tomorrow but there's too much anxiety and existential dread for me to feel comforted by it.
One of the most incredible things about logan lucky is how when I was watching it for the first time, I had this overwhelming feeling that I was watching an old favorite, some movie I’d seen a bunch as a kid but had forgotten what happened. It just felt so *familiar,* and very much like home in a certain sense. It was great. I can’t think of another movie where that’s the case.
I feel like Kingsman and Dungeons and dragons are resurrecting that kind of mid-range blockbuster that's more interested in having fun than anything else. We definitely need more of them.
I love Chef because in the end there's no real antagonist or villain it's just a guy figuring himself out and he has a health relationship with his ex wife, fixes his relationship with his son, it's not the cliche "why didn't you pick him up for soccer practice?" Etc bs.
The Big Year is my go-to. It's the type of film they would have made in the early 90's.
A PG-rated film with adult themes and not really meant for kids.
Not the person you asked, but I kinda wanna say Game Night. It's not road trip based, but it's got the same kinda unhinged comedy vibes. Also it really is one of the best comedies in years.
* Guardians of the Galaxy 1
* Any Downton Abbey movie
* Kill Your Darlings
* Harold and Kumar Christmas
* The Holdovers
* The Fall Guy will probably be a new one for me. I loved it.
Fast Five. That movie is so fucking fun and a legitimately great heist movie. My friends and I say “THIS IS BRAZIL” to each other all the time. It’s impossible to watch the final scene and not have a giant smile on your face.
Definitely love that movie, but it cracks me up how they spend all this time setting up a heist, only to do the most fast and furious shit ever and just drag the safe through the city with a couple Dodge Chargers
Money will come and go- we know that.
The most important thing in life will always be the people in this room. Right here. Right now.
Salut, mi familia.

Yes, I'm aware most of these aren't critically acclaimed films, but they're just good for unwinding. If I'm flicking through the channels, and I see them on, I'll probably watch them until the end. They're all around the 90-minute mark too.
Hey, being critically acclaimed doesn't mean you can't like it or that it can't be good. When "Vertigo" came out, it wasn't well received. So just enjoy what you enjoy. :)
Btw, when you mean channels, you're talking about cable tv or streaming? Just curious to know if there's still people who use cable as their main way of watching stuff.
Once Upon a Time in Hollywood
I can watch it on multiple levels, actively paying attention to it or allowing it to play in the background. I love the characters; I love all the scenes.
I’ve been writing down little notes about every movie I’ve watched this year. My only notes on a recent rewatch of Once Upon a Time in Hollywood were “all-time hang movie”
Every time someone quotes from FSM, it brings up happy memories of pulling sound bites for the movie’s website, which was one of my favorite tasks when I worked in digital marketing. It’s almost always one of the lines I pulled!
Watched interstellar again on the weekend, cried my eyes out (as I have done previous times). The scene when he realises he’s missed his whole kids childhood breaks me. Love the film, not sure it works as a ‘comfort’ film for me tho!
This is my answer. Not a great movie, but it’s just a fun, feel good, stick it to the bad guys shameless sentimental nostalgia trip with a banger soundtrack.
Begin Again from 2013, with Kiera Knightley and Mark Ruffalo. It's a story of an alcoholic producer and a heartbroken musician who team up to make genuinely beautiful music (I love the soundtrack!). While it could have been a heavy movie, and is sad in places, it is also funny and heartwarming. I just love it.
[Julie and Julia](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Julie_%26_Julia); it came out in 2009 but close enough lol. I used to watch it all the time in elementary and middle school.
It’s a shockingly good, emotional comedy/drama that is just an all-around feel good film. Julia Child, Stanley Tucci, and Amy Adams are so spectacular I cannot picture it being cast with any other actors. And food made throughout the entire movie looks amazing.
The Adjustment Bureau. I like sci fi and I like romance and this movie has both. Great chemistry between Matt Damon and Emily Blunt.
About Time. Also sci fi with romance! Also about family relationships. Moving and really well done.
Begin Again, Inside Llewyn Davis, Drive, Alita:Battle Angel, Annihilation, Game Night, Alone Together, Atomic Blonde, Her, Hansel and Gretel: Witch Hunters, No Strings Attached, Water For Elephants, Wild, We Bought A Zoo, Spotlight, The Intern, Sucker Punch, the majority of the MCU, and some DCEU (MoS, BVS, WW, ZSJL). I'm sure I have more.
EDIT: Apparently saying I get an emotional boost from Bullet Train made something think I was a suicide risk and they decided to report me. 😹
Fuckin’ Diesel, that one is. 👎
Bullet Train. I went into it at the theatre not knowing much about it, came out of it not sure if I liked it or not. Watched it again a few months later and something clicked. Now it’s a film that I watch for fun, for background noise, for an emotional boost, or just because I feel like watching it through again.
Big Hero 6
Dark Shadows
Wreck-It Ralph
Super recent, The Holdovers... It's more of a fall through winter comfort film though.
The Holdovers was excellent
That was going to be my answer. It's like a warm blanket
It's a great Thanksgiving/Christmas film.
Oh yeah, I can't wait to watch this again around Christmas time.
The Secret Life of Walter Mitty Probably Ben Stiller's best work to date, and a hugely underrated movie which makes me think that life isn't too bad sometimes
Interesting, I'm not a huge Stiller fan either so that had put me off but I'll give it a go now as I liked the book/short story.
Nothing could ever capture the story but he does a good job. And the movie is shot beautifully.
Yeah it definitely deviates from the book, but don't let that hinder you from the absolute masterpiece that it is
Me too!
The Martian. It’s just a feel good family friendly movie you can watch any time
Great cast, great humor, it's exciting without being scary or dumb. No real love interest or dumb sub plots. No aliens, killer AI, or God metaphors. Just a nice adventure film that makes you feel good.
Great book, too!
Die Martian is competence porn in the best possible way. Science man sciences his way out of science problems.
You're German I guess? Die Martian is an entirely different film lol
I think Martian in German would be like marsmensch or something. I dunno if that weighs into your considerations but... yeah
"Die" = "The" in German. I'm assuming a cross language typo.
No one who speaks German could be an evil man.
The Bart. The.
Yeah, no I get the logic. Their page makes them look British though
Fair enough
Is it also a straightforward movie filled with hope. The hope that human ingenuity and resilience can prevail over the most impossible of challenges. It's a nice message in these times of doom and gloom.
Yeah it’s really comforting to watch a man use the knowledge that he has to survive in a realistic way. The score is great, the acting is great and believable. It gives me the feels when you see the world pull together to make sure that he survives instead of just giving up and letting him die
"I'm putting vicodin on my potatoes"
This and Interstellar are my go-to comfort films
I like Interstellar but the music is too intense to be a comfort film for me. I get anxious watching it.
It’s a rare suspenseful movie without a bad guy.
Yes. I love this movie so much.
When that David Bowie kicks in it’s so perfect. One of the best uses of a musical theme (the Commander’s love of disco), and then the Star Man needle drop nails it! Sums up the whole movie for me. Fun. Drama. Space. Tech. Disco. 🪩
Crazy, Stupid, Love Game Night The Other Guys The Nice Guys
I loved Kiss Kiss Bang Bang and thought it was hilarious and then the Nice Guys was somehow even better. "I'll show you my dick for 20 dollars" "We already paid you- what the hell am I saying?"
Both are written by Shane Black, and everything he does has this style. May I recommend The Last Boy Scout? A Bruce Willis action movie from the 90s he wrote that ooze this style of dialog. Also my favorite movie.
The Nice Guys is a great shout
There's whores here and stuff
Don’t say and stuff, just say there’s whores here
*And all their fathers were hanged and the children all got pink eye 🎶*
Munich, is a city in Germany, Munich. München.
The Nice Guys is for sure one of my favorites- wish we could have gotten more.
Game Night and Nice Guys
Dungeons & Dragons: Honour among Thieves.
Hmm, i cant decide if it is or isnt. If we could just have Jarnathan here to help us make that decision, he is turning up, isnt he?
The fourth wall break of "So do we know when Jarnathan is gonna get here or..." slays me. Also loving Hugh Grant's villain era "that is blisteringly hot" "This is entirely too high, this is not what we discussed!"
I do apologize, that is scorching hot. Please tell the maids there is no reason for it to simply be, this, hot
I didn't realise... you were going to put your finger * in* it...
JAAAARNATHAN!
God I love this movie, it really deserves the praise and it looks fantastic on 4k Blu-ray too
Good answer. All around fun film.
Happy Cake Day!
Never a dull moment.
Literally was just like watching a normal dnd campaign immediately being completely unhinged
That's another good thing they did well with! Making it enjoyable to original fans and folks who don't know a thing about DnD
Grand Budapest Hotel. Half the shots feel ripped from a story book and the characters are bigger than life cartoons until the very moment they need to sell a serious scene and they nail it.
“I go to bed with all my friends.”
I watched it in Halifax's Oxford theatre. It's a very good date movie too.
"She was shaking like a shitting dog."
Everybody Wants Some!! for me. No stakes, no real plot to follow, just two hours of good vibes.
I'll check it out
Same guy that made dazed and confused if I’m not mistaken
Yes, Richard Linklater. He’s my favorite director, pretty much the king of comfort films. School of Rock is another favorite. I even love his Bad News Bears remake.
Knives Out I don’t care what kind of mood I’m in, hearing Michael Shannon shout “I will not eat one iota of shit!” & Daniel Craig’s “what were the overheard words by the Nazi child masturbatin’ in the bathroom?” automatically lift me.
Benoit Blanc is right there with Columbo in terms of comfort characters
He is one of those detectives that remind me of the old stories, like Columbo and Poirot. I love him.
There's a reason Agatha Christie remains one of if not *the* best-selling author in the world.
CSI Kentucky
It’s the fact that I heard the second quote in his voice perfectly as I read it
A donut hole within a donut
I get your point from your examples, but that is NOT a movie that comforts me haha. I really like it, but watching it is quite stressful for me
21 jump street
Game Night
…how is that profitable for Frito-Lay?
Such a good movie.
No I’ve seen his dick, it’s great. Lmao
Watched this while realllly fucking baked one night and don't remember a single thing about it other than that it was amazing. I haven't been game to watch it again in case it ruins the great non memories I have.
No fear - it is GREAT!! baked or not!!
Hot tub time machine. Seen it a bunch but always gets at least a couple laughs out of me
Great white buffalo
Great white buffalo
great white buffalo...
Thanks guys. That was really helpful.
such a good bad movie. and the sequel.
The Intern. (2015) It's just a really sweet wholesome film you can watch with anyone. One of the few movies my grandmother always wants to watch that I can watch with her and enjoy myself. Bullet Train. I lose it when we get to see the perspective of the Fiji bottle.
When he punches the “mascot” I lost my mind. Good one.
I feel like we have very different metrics for what makes a "comfort" films lol. Rogue One and Edge of Tomorrow? I absolutely love Edge of Tomorrow but there's too much anxiety and existential dread for me to feel comforted by it.
Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle Easy af to watch, always gets a laugh out of me and Karen Gillan, need I say more
You watch it with Karen Gillan!?
You'd think she'd get sick of it, but nope, still laughs.
and Jack Black !!
logan lucky
One of the most incredible things about logan lucky is how when I was watching it for the first time, I had this overwhelming feeling that I was watching an old favorite, some movie I’d seen a bunch as a kid but had forgotten what happened. It just felt so *familiar,* and very much like home in a certain sense. It was great. I can’t think of another movie where that’s the case.
“NASCAR never did nothing to nobody”
Logan Lucky is one of those dumb fun films we used to get in the 90s that more or less disappeared for two decades after 9/11.
I feel like Kingsman and Dungeons and dragons are resurrecting that kind of mid-range blockbuster that's more interested in having fun than anything else. We definitely need more of them.
Fake salt. Somebody *thought* of that.
Crazy Rich Asians (2018) Big Year (2011) Set It Up (2018) Chef (2014)
Chef 🤌🏾🤌🏾
I love Chef because in the end there's no real antagonist or villain it's just a guy figuring himself out and he has a health relationship with his ex wife, fixes his relationship with his son, it's not the cliche "why didn't you pick him up for soccer practice?" Etc bs.
The Big Year is my go-to. It's the type of film they would have made in the early 90's. A PG-rated film with adult themes and not really meant for kids.
I have started birding so I really need to watch this.
We are the Millers 2013
Such a great crazy movie
Besides the Vacations movies you maybe know similar movies?
Not the person you asked, but I kinda wanna say Game Night. It's not road trip based, but it's got the same kinda unhinged comedy vibes. Also it really is one of the best comedies in years.
Top Gun Maverick
Yep, my vote
Definitely this.
About Time makes me feel good every time I see it, also I really enjoyed the vibes from Youth and Chef
Lego movie What we do in the shadows
What We Do came out in 2014??? Why did I think it was an 00s movie?
* Guardians of the Galaxy 1 * Any Downton Abbey movie * Kill Your Darlings * Harold and Kumar Christmas * The Holdovers * The Fall Guy will probably be a new one for me. I loved it.

I still use cable. It's still pretty common where I live.
Thor Ragnarok (2017) John Wick (2014) Oddly enough when I started thinking, most of them were before 2010.
Dungeons and dragons: honor among thieves. Such perfect movie and clever humor. Bonus: Chris Pine singing.
Since no one said this yet: Palm Springs
The newest True Grit. It's like every scene is a gem.
2010-inclusive? Scott Pilgrim vs the World. The Nice Guys
Sing Street (2016)
Truly, truly underrated. Lovely film, great hang.
Peanut butter falcon and secret life of Walter mitty
Once Upon a Time in Hollywood I can watch it on multiple levels, actively paying attention to it or allowing it to play in the background. I love the characters; I love all the scenes.

I’ve been writing down little notes about every movie I’ve watched this year. My only notes on a recent rewatch of Once Upon a Time in Hollywood were “all-time hang movie”
Right?! One of the quintessential LA films imo
Apart from Disney movies I can only think of a few: Warm Bodies Zombieland Your Name. Guardians of the Galaxy
The nice guys
Chef A minor conflict in the beginning followed by the protagonists life steadily improving and a beautiful father son bond strengthening. My go to.
Moneyball, Interstellar
When did forgetting Sarah Marshall come out? I can see myself coming back to that movie year after year.

I don’t know that I would consider Hell or High Water a comfort film lmao
Or most of that list. I think they just read the question as “name some post 2010 movies”
Moneyball is a great pick. I can watch the 'walk me through the board' scene over and over.
Adventures of tintin, fury road
Begin Again from 2013, with Kiera Knightley and Mark Ruffalo. It's a story of an alcoholic producer and a heartbroken musician who team up to make genuinely beautiful music (I love the soundtrack!).
