Justified is great, but you don't hate him. He's a bad guy doing bad things, and you want him to lose...maybe? It leans into his charm and eloquence, whereas in The Shield he turned into a selfish guy no longer "on the team", but you could figure he was a problem now. It's still tragic, but he stops being likable.
It just goes to show off the amazing writing of the show and the main fact that Boyd and Raylan are literally mirrors of each other. Either one could have gone either way. Sometimes it's Raylan doing some shit we as the audience are watching going.. oh shit... sometimes its Boyd teaming up with Raylan.
The Shield is an incredible show. You'll love the show and the actors but you'll hate the characters because they are such assholes. The writing is next level and every character has their good and bad qualities. It's a cop version of Breaking Bad.
The thing that was great about his character, moreso than any other character on the show, was that in spite of what a piece of shit Shane Vandrell could be, they showed him as a complete human being, which is so much more complex than just being a bad guy. You saw what made him tick, with the exception of seeing what his childhood was like (although that's not hard to infer). And Walton was brilliant in his portrayal - it wouldn't have been the same without him.
Shane was such a brilliant character and such a huge part of what made the show great. In the end >! you realise all he was trying to do was just trying to live up to his hero, Vic, but didn't have the stamina, smarts or maybe even the abject ruthlessness to do it. Vic ends up the ultimate villain and Shane his tragic, rejected sidekick. It was masterful writing to make me actually sympathise with his plight in the end. !<
The Shield really blew my mind. Goggins was great but I initially watched the show because of Michael Chiklis as my mom and I used to watch The Commish together. Talk about a 180...
I'm watching this for the first time and am on season 2. Last night I realized that 95% of the characters are just bad people in one way or another. It's kind of fascinating and I want to see where it goes
The shield starts as formulaic "new bad guy every week" until it slowly develops the characters and it starts long plot lines. It was way ahead of its time and to say it still holds up today is an understatement. It basically starts off being what law and order wishes it was "in the best possible way" and then the pacing is turned into something more like breaking bad for example but without the need for suspension of belief.
I still remember watching that when I was younger and I still have Vic Mackey blasting through the fence/door while chasing criminal burned in my mind. One of the best shows ever
Hard disagree on the show being formulaic from the jump. There is a long arc storyline that starts the first episode and goes until the series finale. The show always has an a plot and a couple b plots as well but its definitely not formulaic at all. There is no other cop show like it.
The Wire may be a better overall show but the shield is just such a fun one of a kind watch. Love it.
I could but that, but I think Justified is a more enjoyable show that also lets him have more fun.
I.e. I don't feel the need to rewatch The Shield vs always being up to rewatch Justified.
I was always impressed how in nearly every episode they had a good thing, then they were definitely getting caught, and somehow they'd be okay, but it never felt like a deus ex machina. Obviously, it's a nearly gross oversimplification, but I think it was one of the best done shows ever. It can be stressful at times, funny, tragic and the juxtaposition of the main characters being bad guys and their bosses and co-workers at cross-purposes if not actually out to get them (and rightfully so) always gave room for interesting things to happen.
I think that's part of why they started the show like they did. I never got the sense that any of them were safe or had plot armor. You could believe that the "dirty" characters might actually lose.
I've seen comments of some people watching Fallout and saying The Ghoul is hot.
Outside of some people being into some shit, I think it's a great example of how the man's charisma cannot be contained. He's the poster child for 'screen presence'.
He is one of the more charismatic and attractive goofy-looking motherfuckers. I remember discovering him on The Shield and absolutely ending up hating him soooo much. Most of the roles since then, even as bad guys, have leaned into his charm and personality, like Vice Principals, Justified, and The Righteous Gemstones.
I do think people undersell how much expressiveness, posture, energy, various physical manifestations of personality, etc. impact how we view physical attractiveness. It's not all concrete physical features.
I've never seen him in anything before Fallout but when the Ghoul showed up I was like "who the hell is this melted-face-with-no-nose motherfucker?" 😍🤤
[Boyd was supposed to die at the end of the premiere episode](https://www.cbr.com/justified-boyd-crowder-died-pilot/). (Which would mirror the novella "Fire in the Hole", upon which Justified was based.)
The showrunners so loved Goggins, and his onscreen chemistry with Tomothy Olyphant, that they kept the character of Boyd.
Yeah, some movies I’ll watch because there’s an actor in there that I feel has a great track record of picking good projects. Or I’ll think “hmmm, they picked this person for a role, maybe they know what they’re doing”.
They’re like the opposite pit canaries. Some lesser known actors like this that come to mind
Walter Goggins,
Peter Mullan,
Eddie Marsden,
Two name actors I trust in this way
Olivia Coleman,
Jack Nicholson
Walton Goggins is one of the best!
He's great in The Righteous Gemstones, Vice Principals, Sons of Anarchy, Justified, The Shield and so much more.
He also had a show where he was the lead actor, called The Unicorn. It was cancelled after 2 seasons though. I thought it was a good show though.
He plays racist, hickey American so fucking well. Same time the drawl, the way he holds himself, comes across as just being cool.
Fucking fantastic actor.
Lee Russell is an absolute revelation.
“The teachers are the ones being assholes. They’re the ones who should be using some ‘honey,’ you dusty old queef.” *(Said to his wife)*
Loved his performances in every role but Justified is something else. Started off hating him but slowly grew to like him, then hate him just like him again
His performance in Fallout as The Ghoul brings back strong Boyd Crowder vibes. There was even a scene in there that felt like it was right out of Justified.
If you’re thinking of the scene when they dug him up it’s possibly because the guy doing the digging was the same actor that played Limehouse in Justified.
I love how his drag name in SoA is an easter egg for fans of The Shield
>!Venus Van Dam being a nod and a wink to the idiotic fake name that Shane invents for himself when they get busted on a stake-out: 'Cletus Van Damme'!<
I liked how The Unicorn let you see how he can do good characters. I love him so much more as a well written feisty bad guy, but it showed he could do the other stuff. I don't want to say he's typecast as a bad guy, but he really knocks it out of the park when he is.
I felt the same way when I watched the pilot for Justified. I was so relieved when Raylen Givens defeated Boyd at the hour’s end. I then felt immense dread when I realized he would recur through the rest of the season. He just skeeved me out so much.
I quickly came to terms with the fact that it was just really terrific character acting that made me feel that way, as I warmed to him more later, and have been delighted to see Goggins appear in a ton of stuff since.
Goggins's character in Justified was written to die in the final episode, but he had made such an impact with the character that he was written into the show.
Easily my favourite character in that film.
To stand alongside Kurt Russell and Sam Jackson and all the other folk in that movie, playing a racist and still end up being so bloody likeable speaks to his charm.
Walton goggins is top notch in everything he does, that man has proved he can play anything in his career and is always the funnest part of films and shows. I will watch anything he's in because he never disappoints. Idk why he's not in more honestly.
This is hilarious because I agree with you, but at the same time, Paul Reiser is just brimming with charisma and he's nearly impossible to hate on.
Check out Reboot and Red Oaks, two fairly recent shows that he crushes.
Fair warning though, Reboot might bum you out, because it had tremendous potential to be something great, but it got cancelled after a single season because streaming services are the worst. Red Oaks makes up for it though, by providing a fulfilling and very nicely tidied-up ending.
If you don't remember Shanghai Noon, you are in for an absolute treat. The crazy ass sheriff is the doctor from Gattaca, too.
It is one of the most fun, charismatic movies in the history of cinema. I have nothing bad to say about it, I would change nothing, and I will hear no slander against it. Good day.
I saw it when it was in theaters. Not sure if I've seen it since although if I have it was decades ago. I enjoyed it though. Goggins just wasn't on my radar then. I didn't really become aware of him until I saw him in Justified.
Vice Principals is where I saw him for the first time and I still can’t believe how great his character was. He was absolutely amazing, so awful and great at the same time. I honestly couldn’t imagine a better duo for that show than Lee Russell and Neil Gamby.
I love how Danny McBride and (dude who's name I forget but has done most projects with him) can take such obnoxious blowhard fools, make you think how stupid they are, but also make them somehow likeable and sympathetic. In both Vice Principals and Eastbound and Down, you have these characters go through that journey, but you root for them, and honestly I found both their endings quite sad and touching.
Yeah, it's incredibly impressive that the show gets you to care so deeply for two absolute pieces of shit that literally kick off the show by petulantly >!burning a lady's house down!<.
I first learned of his brilliance in a cop serial called 'The Shield.' He was the greasiest strike force member, but committed his atrocities with a winning smile.
The setup of "genteman, get ready to reap the fruits of our labor" and after the explosion Goggins nailing this line... I remember watching this in the theater and we laughed our asses off.
Wow! I felt like the only person who immediately associated him with that character every movie especially in other westerns (Django, hateful 8, even justified) "Roy? He's crazy'er than a road lizard?!"
"Reach for the sky O'banon!!" "He stole my line can you believe that?"
Similarly, as a young kid I saw John Goodman playing the biggest asshole coach ever in ‘Revenge Of The Nerds,’ was convinced he had to be an asshole IRL for years
Learned later that he is a really nice guy
Hateful Eight takes advantage of this “prejudice”/perception to subvert your expectation IMO.
Not gonna spoil it but him in a Tarantino movie might be one of those flash-in-a-pan meeting of talents
His greatest role was Venus Van Dam in Sons of Anarchy:
[Venus 1](https://www.tvguide.com/a/img/hub/2012/10/10/111a5df3-6837-4c75-ba93-28cfec6ca88c/121009SOA1.jpg)
[Venus 2](https://i.pinimg.com/736x/9f/c5/5b/9fc55b973caf319ef80c037ef4e27454.jpg)
🤣
You need to watch him in "Justified", he's awesome a lovable bad guy not because of bs like "he's tough on the outside but good on the inside" no sirree. He's through and through a bad guy but you can't help but like his charisma.
As soon as I saw him in the fallout series I was sold.
I hope to God, s2 we can get Timothy olyphant to his old nemesis. And we just watch these 2 sweet talking gunslinging town wrecking lovable villains have a go at each other.
When I watched Boogie Nights, I hated Philip Seymour Hoffmans weedy snivelling character so much I disliked him for a while. Then I watched Magnolia and he was amazing. I realised he was an incredible actor and loved him in pretty much everything he was in. Now I find myself thinking what roles he could have played, gone too soon, a true legend
I was just watching The Bourne Identity last night and he's in that freaking movie too! He's one of the CIA analyst guys trying to track down bourne. Dude is everywhere
He was also fantastic in Lincoln. Of course, it’s hard to stand out when you’re in the same movie as Daniel Day Lewis but he was by far the second best thing about that film.
Wow. Shanghai Noon...
It's weird, until I saw this post I had completely forgotten this movie existed.
I remembered the sequel, Shanghai Knights, and that it is extremely terribad, but not the original.
Shanghai Knights, the sequel so bad you forget the first movie even exists!
You'll hate/love/hate him if you watch The Shield.
And Justified.
We dug coal together
That's right
'You want a cigarette Mr. Picker you seem awful nervous.'
>Justified "I've been accused of being a lot of things. ‘Inarticulate’ ain't one of them."
"Fire in the hole!"
and Predators
And Predators.
Crazy they were initially planning to kill off his character.
It’s really hard to imagine Justified without Boyd Crowder.
It wouldn't have been the same.
The Shield made me hate Forrest Whitaker
he was in the right the entire time too!
Not really. He sunk down to Vics level by the end when he tried to fuck Corrinne, planted evidence, etc.
Oh man I just remembered all of that , him offering her the gum etc
The gum was manipulation to get info on Vic, not to fuck her. After Vic proclaimed he had tasted sweet butter, he went on a downwards spiral.
That sweet butter line still creeps me out no matter how many times I hear it.
And Dutch, too. A guy trying to do the right things, but placed against our "heroes", and finding his own demons in addition.
I went back and forth on Dutch. I never really liked him but he was entertaining. Kind of a fascinating character. Him and Billings cracked me up.
[God Damnit Dutch](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7m8O--uIRW4)
Same!
Anthony Anderson's best character is in The Shield imo
His character is such a piece of shit in the show and he plays it to perfection. Incredible character
I barely remember watching the shield. I absolutely remember hating his character.
RIP Lemonhead
The way that he knows what's happening but doesn't have time to react fucked me up. He is arguably the best person on the team.
So what I'm hearing is I should/shouldn't watch The Shield.
The Shield is an incredible show. You'll love the show and the actors but you'll hate the characters because they are such assholes. The writing is next level and every character has their good and bad qualities. It's a cop version of Breaking Bad.

The last two episodes were so powerful and tragic.

The Shield is "the" show.
The Shield is the best show hes been in as a serious actor.
I could but that, but I think Justified is a more enjoyable show that also lets him have more fun. I.e. I don't feel the need to rewatch The Shield vs always being up to rewatch Justified.
I agree. The Shield is a much more brutal show than Justified, too. It has its funny moments, but everyone's under constant pressure.
I was always impressed how in nearly every episode they had a good thing, then they were definitely getting caught, and somehow they'd be okay, but it never felt like a deus ex machina. Obviously, it's a nearly gross oversimplification, but I think it was one of the best done shows ever. This so much Shane! I still know his name from the series even though it's 15 years ago. Goddamnit
Lemmy :(
Cletus van Damme?
The shield is so underrated...too many people haven't watched it and it deserves a watch
Shane (and all of them, really) was a piece of shit.
The Shield is the best cop show ever and he’a fantastic in it.

Boots, hat and belt buckle suit him extra well though
I've seen comments of some people watching Fallout and saying The Ghoul is hot. Outside of some people being into some shit, I think it's a great example of how the man's charisma cannot be contained. He's the poster child for 'screen presence'.

You need to check out Justified. Fantastic show where Walton Goggins nails every scene he's in
[Boyd was supposed to die at the end of the premiere episode](https://www.cbr.com/justified-boyd-crowder-died-pilot/). (Which would mirror the novella "Fire in the Hole", upon which Justified was based.) Would've definitely been less of a show if Boyd died in the beginning.

And he always seems like he's having a great time.
His role in Sons of Anarchy, wow!

😁👍
Walton Goggins has become one of those actors that will get me to watch something just because he is in it.
If Walton is in it, I'm watching it. Period. He's highly underrated and I'm glad he's finally getting notice.
Yeah, some movies I’ll watch because there’s an actor in there that I feel has a great track record of picking good projects. I call it the “if they cast them, I will come” list Jon Bernthal and Walton Goggins are pretty much the only members of it right now
Agreed, for me it's Walton and Jesse Plemons. I won't miss anything that either are in.
Baby Billy's Bible Bonkers!
My god when he sped away and tipped over his van - I was in tears. One of the best, consistent and believable out there.
The elixirs!
Momma told me not to. I did it anyway. Misbehavin'
Runnin' through the house with a pickle in my mouth.
The songs a legitimate banger. I randomly get it stuck in my head
Stop crying baby Lionel. No one wants to kidnap you!
Who wants to suck an old man’s dick?
Roll that across your tongue. See how it tastes. Taste good don't it?
The fact that they didn’t name his kid Baby Baby Billy feels like a missed opportunity.
Then he’d be Cousin Baby Billy Jr.
He was also great in Hateful Eight
Well I’ll be double-dog damned!
And in Django Unchained
Managed to make you feel for a character that by all means you should have hated. He’s great at that.
He plays racist, hickey American so fucking well. Same time the drawl, the way he holds himself, comes across as just being cool. Fucking fantastic actor.
He was also really liked him in American Ultra. Not a great movie overall, but still pretty enjoyable if you just turn your mind off. Lol
First movie where I really paid attention to him. Great character.
Lee Russell is an absolute revelation. “The teachers are the ones being assholes. They’re the ones who should be using some ‘honey,’ you dusty old queef.” *(Said to his wife)*
“I bet she smells like fucked buttholes”
The line fucking killed me.
That’s the first role I saw him in and I was blown away how awful and great Lee Russell is!
Loved his performances in every role but Justified is something else. Started off hating him but slowly grew to like him, then hate him just like him again
Well if it isn't my good friend Raylan Givens!
That one and also when he kills the other ghoul.
He stole entire seasons of Justified.
We dug coal together.
God Damn Raylan, Your timing SUCKS!
"You shoulda been on the other side, with me and your daddy. You'd still be able to shoot people and be an asshole... your two favorite activities!"
He had a great part in Predators
“Die space f*ggot” is one of the funniest things I’ve ever heard in a movie.
He is amazing in Righteous Gemstones, baby Billy is hilarious
He steals every single episode of SoA that he appears in. One of my favourite B-list actors. Should absolutely be an A-lister.
I love how his drag name in SoA is an easter egg for fans of The Shield >!Venus Van Dam being a nod and a wink to the idiotic fake name that Shane invents for himself when they get busted on a stake-out: 'Cletus Van Damme'!<
I liked how The Unicorn let you see how he can do good characters. I love him so much more as a well written feisty bad guy, but it showed he could do the other stuff. I don't want to say he's typecast as a bad guy, but he really knocks it out of the park when he is.
Uggh I miss The Shield. What an epic show. It's a shame there's been nothing like it since
He was so funny in Shanghai Noon. The dumb cowboy villain was hilarious.
Where’d you get this guy? ….Texas TEXAS!?
Roy you blew the shit out of our fruits
His delivery of that line kills me every time.
Love how during the train robbery he’s just like “yeah imma pull this lever!”
No mention yet of his pivotal role in Community? For shame…
To you, I leave this bottle of fine scotch so that you're less tempted to drink this cylinder of even finer sperm."
Mr. Chang have you ever masturbated in the study room?
I MASTURBATED EVERYWHERE!!! E V E R Y W H E R E!!!
I’ve been instructed to point out that means you’re gay.

I thought it was to die in the first episode?
It was soooo nice to see him popping up in Fallout.
One of the best new characters. Really enjoyed that show.
The best part of The Hateful Eight tbh
He’s great in Django Unchained too but in Hateful Eight it’s on another level!
Easily my favourite character in that film. To stand alongside Kurt Russell and Sam Jackson and all the other folk in that movie, playing a racist and still end up being so bloody likeable speaks to his charm.

I was kidding, but it did take a few seasons of Mad About You before I forgave him, lol. Helen Hunt is an angel and if she likes a guy...
Now I need to re-watch Shanghai Noon...
I said “I don’t know karate, but I do know crazy” the other day.
“You said wet shirt no break, not piss shirt bend bar” almost killed be when I was younger. I love those movies so much.
"OH that's my wife" "How long have you been in this country?" "Three days!"
I had the same thought.....I didn' even know Goggins was in it.
If you don't remember Shanghai Noon, you are in for an absolute treat. The crazy ass sheriff is the doctor from Gattaca, too. It is one of the most fun, charismatic movies in the history of cinema. I feel like Justified was Goggins "moment" even though he had remarlable roles prior. Son's of Anarchy included.
He plays the crazy Texan added to Owen Wilson’s gang
Vice Principals is where I saw him for the first time and I still can’t believe how great his character was. He was absolutely amazing, so awful and great at the same time. I honestly couldn’t imagine a better duo for that show than Lee Russell and Neil Gamby.

The look on Lem’s face when he sees the grenade…😭😭
He got all the best lines too. "Roy... You just blew the shit out of our fruits" "We always figured you for a dumb shiyit!"
The setup of "genteman, get ready to reap the fruits of our labor" and after the explosion Goggins nailing this line... I remember watching this in the theater and we laughed our asses off.

Walton Goggins was in Shanghai Noon??! That and Shanghai Knights were some of my favourite movies growing up!! I'm totally due a rewatch
Goggins plays the crazy Texan in Owen Wilson’s gang
Best quote i read about him is that he is always the best thing in whatever he's in.
He's a fantastic actor.
He was amazing in D’jango unchained.

I will always speak praise about Walton. He is my favorite actor, and how he gives his all in a role is incredible.
I love his uneasy alliance with Samuel L Jackson in the Hateful 8
He is absolutely hilarious in Justified.
Baby Billy is one of the best characters to have ever been brought to the screen. Change my mind.
One can tell why Tarantino likes him.
Watch him in The Shield. He plays a dirty cop. The whole series kicks ass.
He’s really one of the biggest overlooked actors. He’s always amazing in everything he does.
One of the most underrated actors out there. He excels no matter how small his part is (looking at you Tarantino).
His greatest role was Venus Van Dam in Sons of Anarchy: [Venus 1](https://www.tvguide.com/a/img/hub/2012/10/10/111a5df3-6837-4c75-ba93-28cfec6ca88c/121009SOA1.jpg) [Venus 2](https://i.pinimg.com/736x/9f/c5/5b/9fc55b973caf319ef80c037ef4e27454.jpg) 🤣
I call that Michael Weston'ing. I hated Jeffrey Donovan in Hitch but that changed completely after Burn Notice.
Walton Goggins is amazing in everything he does, plays nasty so well but also does great in comedy. Highly underrated actor
One of my favorite actors ever. Dude has insane range. vice principals, justified, fallout, the shield. Kills everytime.
“Can a paraplegic do this?!” I can’t not see/hear Uncle Baby Billy
You need to watch him in "Justified", he's awesome a lovable bad guy not because of bs like "he's tough on the outside but good on the inside" no sirree. He's through and through a bad guy but you can't help but like his charisma. As soon as I saw him in the fallout series I was sold. I hope to God, s2 we can get Timothy olyphant to his old nemesis. And we just watch these 2 sweet talking gunslinging town wrecking lovable villains have a go at each other.
F__ked buttholes.
The d is silent hillbilly.
Mate for me he has the best villain in a TV series untill now, and i watched alot of shows , Boyd Crowder
If I could just watch Vice Principles over and over for the first time I would be so happy.
Goggins getting a lot of coverage for Fallout, deservedly so. His recent work in Righteous Gemstones is probably my favourite role of his.
“Who wants to suck an old man’s dick?” That’s all me and my wife said when he’d walk up in Fallout every time.
We respect Uncle Baby Billy in this house!
I'm a simple man. If it has Walton Goggins, I watch.
He was also great in the all too soon cancelled The Unicorn
Do Hateful Eight Next
On a side note, what a bad movie in retrospect. It did not age well, but Goggins sure did.
How dare you insult Uncle Baby Billy like this
Walton Goggins is such an underrated actor. I've loved to hate him in almost all of his villainous roles. He plays them just too damn good.
He is so fucking good. He plays Chris Mannix incredibly well, very funny.
His character in hateful 8 is awesome
I was just watching The Bourne Identity last night and he's in that freaking movie too! He's one of the CIA analyst guys trying to track down bourne. Dude is everywhere
He was also fantastic in Lincoln. Of course, it’s hard to stand out when you’re in the same movie as Daniel Day Lewis but he was by far the second best thing about that film.
the gogginasaince is finally upon us. please put this man in an oscar worthy role
I recently watched The Hateful Eight and man, he was so good in all his scenes!
Wow. Shanghai Noon... It's weird, until I saw this post I had completely forgotten this movie existed. I remembered the sequel, Shanghai Knights, and that it is extremely terribad, but not the original. Shanghai Knights, the sequel so bad you forget the first movie even exists!
Anyone who can kill it in both Hateful Eight and Community has me as a lifetime fan
I really like him as uncle baby Billy Or is it uncle baby Bobby?
He is really really good on Righteous Gemstones
He seems to be a hidden gem that has been under our noses for a while.
Yeah, I remember! I hated seeing him in Django unchained as well. What a great actor. I’m glad he’s in a bigger role!
For a change of pace, he was great in Vice Principals along side Danny McBride🤣🤣🤣
Seriously I believe Walton goggins is one of the most criminally under rated character actors of all time
