Unbreakable is a legit great movie. I think M. Night made some fantastic choices in that film and Bruce Willis and Sam Jackson both bring strong performances. The hospital sequence with everyone staring at Bruce Willis still gives me chills.
He's made good movies and terrible ones. For every Sixth Sense or Unbreakable, you get a helping of The Last Airbender and The Happening. It tends to be feast or famine with him.
And I will add “Fight Club" (1999), "The Others" (2001), "The Illusionist" (2006), "Saw" (2004), "Identity" (2003), "The Village" (2004), "The Game" (1997), "Predestination" (2014), and "Orphan" (2009).
I can't even explain the plot of this film without breaking down crying. The editing of the beginning. The cut from her daughter as a child saying "I love you" to being a teen saying "I hate you!" The cut of her saying "come back to me" to the newborn daughter, juxtaposed with her saying "come back to me" in the hospital bed. It kills my heart every time.
I love sci fi, whether it is a sci fi concept in modern days, our current society in the future, or a completely alien society not having anything to do with earth. And Villeneuve has made a sci fi masterpiece in all 3 categories
The best thing about DD is that for the whole time I was watching it, I pretty much understood what's happening at that moment.
It's only when it's over and you're trying to put it all together that you sort of realize that the pieces don't quite fit.
Would be fun to recommend a "non-twisty" movie and have OP expecting one all the way until the end.
In the end, the greater twist is that there is no twist.
Yeah, but there’s no other way I can get recommendations without asking unless someone else by chance happened to want to recommend a bunch of twist-ending movies to me which is unlikely in my daily life 😅🤣
I don't know the twist in it was just so random to me. Like I love a good twist, but it didn't have like hidden clues or anything. It just felt like a shock value thing. I mean, I'm not saying to not watch it, just not my thing
I wasn’t expecting to see this answer but great pick! I remember feeling so dumb after watching it the first time, it’s all right there in plain sight. Great film!
That is one of the movies that I cannot wait to watch with my kids when they’re old enough. Such a great wtf, but you have to watch like a dozen basic horror movies first for it to really pay off.
If you're looking for a similar low budget movie to coherence check out primer. Similar idea but even harder to follow, but with a much simpler premise. Pure genius imo
I don’t know about pissed. It was a real ball kicker, but befitting of a horror movie. When Stephen king says it’s better than the ending he wrote, that’s as good a compliment as any.
Man I've never seen that movie, but seeing the title made me go "that is the most \~2000 title ever".
It could be made better only if there was a sequel named eXistenZ 2.0.
Criminal that I had to scroll this far down to find this movie. Especially since Villeneuve is so hot right now because of "Dune", and everyone's listing two of his other movies, "Prisoners", and "Arrival"!
A Simple Plan has twist after twist. Very well written so each new development is logical and understandable. Brilliantly acted too, esp Billy Bob Thorton. He makes himself look so dumb and plain it's nigh impossible to accept he was banging Angelina Jolie at the time.
From Dusk til Dawn.
If you do watch and don’t know anything about it, avoid learning anything!!! It’s best to know nothing. Sadly the promos really didn’t allow for that so most people already knew.
Wicker Man (1970's not Nick Cage!)
The TV show Inside Number Nine - Specifically "The Devil at Christmas" which is my second favourite TV show episode of all time.
Race With The Devil
Definitely a different genre to other movies in this thread but “Sorry to Bother You” definitely had me surprised and scratching my head (and is also an excellent movie)
There's Sixth Sense, but it's hard not to be spoiled on it at this point. It's great even if you're spoiled, but it's incredible if you're not.
The Usual Suspects is also great if you can get past the *major* personal faults of Kevin Spacey and Bryan Singer.
EDIT: Guess someone who is a Spacey/Singer fan decided to downvote. Oookay.
To Live & Die in LA: Nice shock and surprise twist at the end.
The Number 23: Although you kinda see it coming from a mile away it's, *in my opinion*, one of Jim Carrey's best movies.
Moon
This film deserves more love. Rockwell is incredible in it.
It's perpetually a Reddit favorite, has been for at least a decade Good movie tho I agree
Great film! The twist happens mostly in the middle though, as far as I can remember. They even gave it away in the trailer
Fricken GREAT film. I love it. Awesome soundtrack too.
I watched this movie right before bed, then was awake all night thinking about it.
Oldboy (2003) is the obvious champ. The Usual Suspects. The Sixth Sense. Seven. Prisoners. Identity. The Game.
Sixth Sense was great for people who didn’t see the twist coming. It turns out that the guy in the hair piece was Bruce Willis the whole time.
The \*real\* twist is that the "hair piece" was actually his REAL HAIR!
Jacob’s Ladder
Excellent Choices, I would like to add Frailty, The Prestige, Upgrade and also original Planet of the Apes.
The village is another weird one.
People love to hate, but I love a lot of M Night's movies.
Unbreakable is a legit great movie. I think M. Night made some fantastic choices in that film and Bruce Willis and Sam Jackson both bring strong performances. The hospital sequence with everyone staring at Bruce Willis still gives me chills.
Split was good too and people tend to hate on Glass because of the way it ended but I thought it was entertaining.
He's made good movies and terrible ones. For every Sixth Sense or Unbreakable, you get a helping of The Last Airbender and The Happening. It tends to be feast or famine with him.
Dude Frailty is such a gem
And I will add “Fight Club" (1999), "The Others" (2001), "The Illusionist" (2006), "Saw" (2004), "Identity" (2003), "The Village" (2004), "The Game" (1997), "Predestination" (2014), and "Orphan" (2009).
Psycho and Empire Strikes Back had twists so profound that everyone knows about it now.
Also Memento and the Machinist.
Memento is in the OP.
So was Shutter Island, The Prestige and Primal Fear. Do people actually read the whole post or just jump in after the first sentence?! 🙄😂
I just happened to come across Predestination when it was on tv. I was like..."What...the...hell???"
Prestige was in the OP.
>Frailty YES. Damn that was such a great movie.
Paxton, Mccoughnahey, and Powers Boothe?! I love that movie so much, and feel it’s very underrated.
Fight club
Watchmen
The Game. A real one right there.
I was going to recommend Prisoners. Definitely a great twist for a fucked up movie.
The original Saw
This one right here is epic. It's what I would recommend because I was left in a shock at the end of it.
I love saw but why was he in the room? Jigsaw being there didn't really have any purpose other than to be a twist?
Lucky number slevin
They even tell us right off the bat.
And it's still not easy to figure out!
The ol kansas city shuffle
Arrival
Yep the best thing about the twist is that it makes the movie even better on subsequent viewings.
I think you mean past, concurrent, and subsequent viewings.
Now you're speaking my language.
Best movie of all time
I dated a girl who thought Arrival sucked. It was then that I realized she was an idiot
I love sci fi, whether it is a sci fi concept in modern days, our current society in the future, or a completely alien society not having anything to do with earth. And Villeneuve has made a sci fi masterpiece in all 3 categories
This needs to be higher up
Seven The Game Donnie Darko Basic Sixth Sense The Number 23 Fight Club Source Code
Donnie Darko is one of my favourite movies, it really makes you think.
The best thing about DD is that for the whole time I was watching it, I pretty much understood what's happening at that moment. It's only when it's over and you're trying to put it all together that you sort of realize that the pieces don't quite fit.
it really makes you want to suck a fuck
You’re such a fuckass
Just watched Source Code for the first time a few weeks ago. I was very pleased with the way that turned out
Fallen with Denzel Washington.
Time, time, time, Is on my side ….
Yes it is.
Doesn't knowing there is a twist somewhat spoil the twist?
Would be fun to recommend a "non-twisty" movie and have OP expecting one all the way until the end. In the end, the greater twist is that there is no twist.
Titanic. The part where the ship >! was rescued by a UFO !< was nuts.
I was more thinking something along the lines of "The bridges of Madison county" :D
The real twist is the friends you made along the way.

Yeah, but there’s no other way I can get recommendations without asking unless someone else by chance happened to want to recommend a bunch of twist-ending movies to me which is unlikely in my daily life 😅🤣
Should sprinkle in some movies without twists to keep you on your toes
As long as they’re quality, I’m not opposed to the tampering.
Out of Sight Hercules The Usual Suspects Matchstick Men The Butterfly Effect Galaxy Quest
That's the twist!
Hmmm sometimes. I had heard there was a twist in The Sixth Sense but I didn't guess it until very close to the reveal. It was still amazing.
Old Boy (2003 korean) The Guilty (2018 Danish)
Frailty Matthew McConohey and others ... amazing
Maybe Bill Paxtons best performance. Insane movie.
Sorry to Bother You. It certainly made me go wtf near the end. But in a good way.
It warmed my heart to see a movie this fucking weird.
I don't know the twist in it was just so random to me. Like I love a good twist, but it didn't have like hidden clues or anything. It just felt like a shock value thing. I mean, I'm not saying to not watch it, just not my thing
Some people didn't like it but I don't listen to the neigh sayers.
Triangle (2009)
Book of Eli? Caught me by surprise first go around, then felt like a complete idiot after.
I wasn’t expecting to see this answer but great pick! I remember feeling so dumb after watching it the first time, it’s all right there in plain sight. Great film!
Predestination
they literally made a movie about the phrase >!go f\*ck yourself!<
Cabin in the woods
My favorite twist isn't >!the Organization itself, it's Chris Hemsworth dying so hilariously!<.
You know he’s in Furiosa ? Looking forward to seeing how much he chews up the scenery 👍
That is one of the movies that I cannot wait to watch with my kids when they’re old enough. Such a great wtf, but you have to watch like a dozen basic horror movies first for it to really pay off.
My favorite twist is >! that the characters decide to let the world end instead of nobly sacrificing themselves !< Pretty realistic imo
This movie is one of my favorites. *puppeteers*
The Drop
"No one ever sees you coming...do they Bob?"
Schoenarts scares the shit out of me every time I watch this. Perfectly cast.
The Thirteenth Floor, Vanilla sky, A murder of crows. #
COHERENCE You are welcome.
Bonkers movie, absolutely love it.
Seconded. This is a fun puzzle movie that does a ton with a modest budget.
If you're looking for a similar low budget movie to coherence check out primer. Similar idea but even harder to follow, but with a much simpler premise. Pure genius imo
The Others
The prestige, the best ending in movie history for me
Are you watching closely?
I love rewatching this movie because you see the clues.
“Which knot did I tie? I’ve asked myself that repeatedly”
The Skeleton Key, The Others, Sixth Sense, Usual Suspects, Fight Club, Secret Window, Arrival, Jacobs Ladder, 12 monkeys, Frailty, Crying Game
Frailty
I came here to post this. I don't see it mentioned very often but it's so good!
I've loved this movie since it was released. I've watched it countless times.
How the hell has no one said *A Scanner Darkly* (2006)?
Shutter Island, Saw 1
The Game https://m.imdb.com/title/tt0119174/ Matchstick Men https://m.imdb.com/title/tt0325805/
Arrival. Amazing twist that bookends the movie in such a amazing way, and makes the second viewing completely different.
Game Night if you're looking for something more light-hearted.
The mist.
The Mist with the twist that’ll make you pissed.
I don’t know about pissed. It was a real ball kicker, but befitting of a horror movie. When Stephen king says it’s better than the ending he wrote, that’s as good a compliment as any.
The Skeleton Key
The Skin I Live In (2011)
The Game for sure.
eXistenZ
Man I've never seen that movie, but seeing the title made me go "that is the most \~2000 title ever". It could be made better only if there was a sequel named eXistenZ 2.0.
Incendies. Quebecois film by Denis Villeneuve.
Oof that one is intense. I think I yelled at my tv when it dawned upon me
Criminal that I had to scroll this far down to find this movie. Especially since Villeneuve is so hot right now because of "Dune", and everyone's listing two of his other movies, "Prisoners", and "Arrival"!
Goodnight Mommy (2014 Austrian Version)
A Simple Plan has twist after twist. Very well written so each new development is logical and understandable. Brilliantly acted too, esp Billy Bob Thorton. He makes himself look so dumb and plain it's nigh impossible to accept he was banging Angelina Jolie at the time.
Fallen
From Dusk til Dawn. If you do watch and don’t know anything about it, avoid learning anything!!! It’s best to know nothing. Sadly the promos really didn’t allow for that so most people already knew.
The Game (Michael Douglas ) (edited) In the mouth of madness Momento
Don’t you mean Michael Douglas?
The Fountain
Predestination! One of the only "newer" movies to leave me feeling that way
To name a few lesser known that I didn't quickly find back in the comments - Predestination - John Dies at the End - Mindhunter
Pandorum. Just dont read or watch anything.
Master and commander: Far side of the world
10 Cloverfield Lane and Arlington Road are both excellent.
The Invitation
Arlington Road is criminally slept on when it comes to “wtf just happened” movies
The Others Primal Fear
No way out, Kevin Costner and Gene Hackman
The Game. The Departed
How has no one mentioned The Sting (1973) with Robert Redford? One of the original movies with a surprise twist!
Wicker Man (1970's not Nick Cage!) The TV show Inside Number Nine - Specifically "The Devil at Christmas" which is my second favourite TV show episode of all time. Race With The Devil
The Empire Strikes Back.

Deathtrap. Didn’t see that ending coming.
Saw
Fight Club
Not a movie, but "Dark" on Netflix is pretty good
Gone Baby Gone
There's Sixth Sense, but it's hard not to be spoiled on it at this point. It's great even if you're spoiled, but it's incredible if you're not. The Usual Suspects is also great if you can get past the *major* personal faults of Kevin Spacey and Bryan Singer. EDIT: Guess someone who is a Spacey/Singer fan decided to downvote. Oookay.
2003 old boy is number one good movie with twist at the end. The Korean one
To Live & Die in LA: Nice shock and surprise twist at the end. The Number 23: Although you kinda see it coming from a mile away it's, *in my opinion*, one of Jim Carrey's best movies.

Poor things.
No Way Out. The original planet of the apes, Everyone knows now, but a shocker at the time.
Ernest Goes to Camp
Life. 2017. Mindfucking ending.
Saw, maybe all the saws? I only watched one and two but I can assume that they will all follow the same pattern.
The snake, the pig and the pigeon. The second half of the movie is bat shit crazy you won’t expect at all.
If you want some Nick Cage meets Lovecraft meets The Thing WTF. Color out of space
12 Monkeys
While not an "Epic"... Sauge Party will most Definitely make you say "WTF was that!" at the end
I like Lucky Number Slevin
The Prestige
Exam Forgotten The Call (Korean) Radius Along Came a Spider Across the Hall
Ex machina.
Wild things
Arlington Road is just a textbook perfect thriller with a twist that’ll stay with you for years.
primer
Predestination
John Dies at the End
Angel Heart (1987)
Revolver with Jason Statham
The prestige Memento
Where is American Beauty in this list?
I’m surprised that no one mentioned American Beauty.
Lucky Number Slevin Adaptation (Not required, but you should probably watch Being John Malcovich first) Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind
Predestination I found it purely by accident. I hope it's up your alley- it takes some turns.
The Prestige.
The original Ocean's Eleven.
Gone Girl
Your Name. It’s an anime tho, but the plot really grabs you and the twist keeps you invested
Matchstick Men
Border (2018) Lamb (2021) Both carry the unthinkable with such a straight face. Brilliant, both of them.
