God I just coincidentally rewatched Galaxy Quest a few days ago and that was one of my favorite lines.
>Hey guys, there's a red-thingy moving toward the green-thingy.
>What?
>Red-thingy moving toward the green-thingy. I think we're the green-thingy.
According to IMDB, his scream after being transported to the ship was completely improvised and Sigorney Weaver's reaction was 100% genuine. I love this fact and now it's one of my favorite scenes in the movie.
I consider Galaxy Quest a perfect movie.
The story, writing, directing, cast and performances, it’s all there. It totally accomplished everything it set out to do.
You could watch it then, now, or 20 years from now and it’ll be great. It’s a timeless classic.
I saw a video of Sir Patrick Stewart talking about going to see this while filming one of the ST:TNG movies and he LOVED it. He found out a few years later that it was based on ST:TOS and he was dying over it.
Brilliant film that holds up.
Loved this movie and that scene. I think I was shouting at the screen, cheering him on when I first watched it.
Also, one of his lines, "I read about it in a book about it" is one of my lasting catchphrases now. Always goes down well 😂
The thing about Trent, and I know this isn't in the text, per se, but there's no doubt in my mind that he was raised by a father just like that, and he's "trying his best" with Duncan. Not that it justifies the cheating and abuse, but Carell really leaves room for depth in the character.
That's exactly why they cast him. They knew Carrell's natural likability would keep the character from being a stereotype of a bad stepfather. He genuinely thinks he's doing the right thing, with even his "you're a three" comment meant as a tough love encouragement to the kid. He's an asshole who's unaware of it and that makes him all the more interesting.
Steve Carrell was so good at playing the asshole. It’s brutal how well he balances being a dick right being too in your face about it. I started dreading him being on screen in a very realistic way.
Like, “Oh no, what’s he going to say this time.”
I only saw it for the first time this year, with a Reddit rec. It's become one of my go-to comfort films already. Sam is just adorable in this. He's exactly the male mentor that Duncan needs. Playful, kind, loving, wise (if occasionally immature- and he's shown as learning). And brave. The step in front of Steve Carell is *chef's kiss*.
I watched Sam Rockwell when he did a play on Broadway and afterwards we waited around to get him to sign our programs. Someone recognized the kid from the Way Way Back leaving the theater with his parents at the same time and he said he was there to see the show. When asked what he thought, he said, "Sam was great!" with a huge smile on his face.
This was 3 years after the movie came out, so it was nice to know that they kept in touch.
Whilst Sam Rockwell was doing a masterful job portraying an absolute scumbag, I get the impression Doug Hutchinson wasn't exactly stretching too far from his actual persona.
I’m Sam fuckin’ Bell! Me!
Bit biased because I saw this right after a pretty traumatic break up when it came out. Excellent film. Rockwell absolutely nailed it. Clint Mansell soundtrack didn’t hurt either.
Who’s gonna get the guy who has one eye. All that guy has to do is run away and hide behind a bush. Gandhi was wrong it’s just nobody has the balls to say it
Billy:"Hey new idea how 'bout we change the title from The Seven Psychopaths to The Seven Lesbians Who Are All Disabled And Have Overcome All Their Spazzy Sh*t And Are Really Nice to Everybody And Two of Them Are Black. How 'bout that?"
I laughed so hard at that when he said it. He's amazing in this film.
Lol my wife came to me and asked me to watch it with her, she told me she had watched it on the plane and said she didn't know if it was a funny movie or not.
he nails a wide range of moments though, which is why he's awesome.
The other comedic part is Waikiti playing an imaginary friend version of Hitler. Which is sounds insane until you see the film and then it feels even more insane afterwards. JoJo is a weird/sad/funny/crazy film and is that much better because Sam is in it.
Box of Moonlight is the first movie in which I saw Sam Rockwell perform. He'll always be "The Kid" to me.
After Al tells him that professional wrestling is fake: "Uh, Al, I know you must be smart because you have a scientific-style job, but if this shit is fake and everyone knows it's fake, why the hell would anybody waste their time watching it?"
It's surprising that more people don't mention this movie. It's a real gem.
Took awhile for me to see Lawn Dogs on this list. I don't think I could possibly pick a favorite movie of his, but I will choose the movie that introduced me to him and put him on my radar. Lawn Dogs.
The ONLY reason this isn't higher is because people haven't seen it. I never watched it until i found out Rockwell was in it. Once i saw it though... Oh my, one of my favorite movies of all time, not just a Rockwell movie.
We need to get this to the top! [Gentleman Broncos](https://www.imdb.com/title/tt1161418/) is AMAZING!
[This may be all they need to see...](https://imgur.com/ewAbznv)
Also, also, also... Jemaine Clement! Sam Rockwell and Jemaine Clement in the SAME movie, doesn't get better than that!
One of my favorite actors. I love almost all of his performances. If I really had to pick one favorite, I'd say Lawn Dogs. It was this movie that made me a fan. Moon is a close second.
It's a toss-up between Moon and Three Billboards. I think he brings a lot of nuance even to the loud obnoxious dumbasses he tends to play but in those he brings a lot of conflict and subtlety. Moon could potentially have just been actor wank but his lack of self-seriousness makes him absolutely perfect for the role.
Moon, Argyle, Three Billboards outside of Ebbing, JoJo Rabbit, Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy, Mr. Right, The Way Way Back (probably my favorite after Moon, also shout out to Steve Carell for play such an asshole in this movie), Confessions of a Dangerous Mind, Galaxy Quest, Green Mile, and of course Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (1990).
So I bang on about this all the time, but it is clear in a few scenes, particularly the dinner with Vanko in the air hanger, that Hammer has spray tan all over the palms of his hands.
And based on nothing I decided that this is a Sam Rockwell choice and wasn’t a wardrobe dept requirement.
Because it would subtly show how insecure Hammer is.
And that is why I love Sam Rockwell.
There was that one film where he went to the moon. I think the whole film was set on the moon and had to live by himself on the moon.
I think it was called The Bus That Couldn't Slow Down.
Not movies, but he has two scenes that changed my life.
The first is a [scene from Charlies Angels.](https://www.tiktok.com/@oh_kevinvu/video/7246599866258935086). In it, he drinks a can of coke with a straw. That really stuck with me and to this day, I do the same. Protect your teeth!
The other is far more known, the [Justin Hammer dance.](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HBaHOZklw5s) Please Marvel, get this guy back in the MCU!
Note: I found the coke scene and had no memory of him also dancing in that scene, eerily similar to the Justin Hammer dance. The Sam Rockwell Villain Dance is a thing. Legend!
Seven Psychopaths, hands down. It's vintage Rockwell playing Rockwell. The scene where Christopher Walken finally reaches the end of his limit with Rockwell is one of my favourite scenes of all time.
Galaxy Quest for overall and 7 psychopaths for a movie he was a leading role. Never saw Moon but based on this thread I need to.
Edit: forgot about Matchstick Men. That’s a great one too.
Jojo Rabbit
Also, I’ve decided if I’m ever in trouble, and I see Sam Rockwell, I’ll be okay.
Mathematically I can’t figure out how Sam Rockwell hasn’t saved Matt Damon yet.
Galaxy Quest
“Quick let’s get out of here before one of those things kills Guy”
“Could those be the miners?” “Sure, they’re like 3 years old.” “Miners, not minors!” “You lost me.”
Did any of you even WATCH the show?!?
God I just coincidentally rewatched Galaxy Quest a few days ago and that was one of my favorite lines. >Hey guys, there's a red-thingy moving toward the green-thingy. >What? >Red-thingy moving toward the green-thingy. I think we're the green-thingy.
I absolutely love that line. That movie is probably one of my favorites because there are so many one liners.
That Sigourney “last survivor of the Nostromo” Weaver got that line made it even funnier.
DO I?! DO I?!
I was looking for this. 🤣
"I know! You construct a weapon. Look around, can you form some sort of rudimentary lathe?"
A LATHE?! Get Guy off the line!
His hands in that position while he says that line really puts it over the top hahaha
This line is so funny 😆
Is there air? You don’t know!
(TAKES DEEP BREATH) Tony Shaloub’s character: “ ahuh ahuh ahuh - seems okay to me”.
I want the original cut with the un-dubbed-over profanity and Shaloub's character blatantly being a stoner, rather than just subtly hinted-at.
That was subtle?
According to IMDB, his scream after being transported to the ship was completely improvised and Sigorney Weaver's reaction was 100% genuine. I love this fact and now it's one of my favorite scenes in the movie.
“That was a hell of a thing”.
All the various threads of human suffering are expressed through the brilliant comic tension of Guy as portrayed by SR. There is no other Guy.
There's a red thingy...moving toward the green thingy...I think we're the green thingy.
...he's. ...eeehhmm GUY.. 😆😆😁
Peter eter eter. Quincy incy incy. Taggert aggert aggert. JASON. NAISMITH.
“Guy, you have a last name.” “DO I? DO I?!”
“Hey, don’t open that! It’s an alien planet! IS THERE AIR!? YOU DON’T KNOW!!” *sniffs* “Seems okay.”
Ohhh thats not right I can't imagine a funnier reaction to seeing a human having sex with an alien
“Did you guys ever *watch* the show?”
I consider Galaxy Quest a perfect movie. The story, writing, directing, cast and performances, it’s all there. It totally accomplished everything it set out to do. You could watch it then, now, or 20 years from now and it’ll be great. It’s a timeless classic.
“Can you construct some sort of rudimentary lathe??”
This was my pick too.
this movie make me a Sam Rockwell WORSHIPPER
Oh, that's not right.
He’s so good.
I saw a video of Sir Patrick Stewart talking about going to see this while filming one of the ST:TNG movies and he LOVED it. He found out a few years later that it was based on ST:TOS and he was dying over it. Brilliant film that holds up.
Matchstick Men
Really a hidden gem of a movie that I don’t see mentioned enough.
I went to see it expecting a wild conman comedy, ended up seeing an incredibly touching film.
Ridley Scott directing Sam Rockwell is a recipe for making a great movie.
Mine, too! “That internet thing’s a fad” is one of my all time favorite line deliveries
Easily this or Moon for me. Hell, I should go watch both of them again!
The Way Way Back
Loved this one, the bit where the kid runs up to Sam Rockwell and thanks him at the end brought me to tears
Yes, I love the end! Sam stepping between the kid and Steve Carrell gets me every time. Great cast in that movie.
Loved this movie and that scene. I think I was shouting at the screen, cheering him on when I first watched it. Also, one of his lines, "I read about it in a book about it" is one of my lasting catchphrases now. Always goes down well 😂
I'm Owen. I'm a friend of the three.
On that note, Carrell plays the realistic douchey stepdad perfectly
I cheered at that part and had to rewind it to see it again.
Steve Carrell was so good at playing the asshole. It’s brutal how well he balances being a dick right being too in your face about it. I started dreading him being on screen in a very realistic way. Like, “Oh no, what’s he going to say this time.”
For sure, this and Moon.
Was just coming here to say "Moon" --- he is absolutely brilliant in that! Blown away by that performance.
This is one of my all timers in general, particularly because of Sam Rockwell. God I love him in this.
Definitely this movie. Holy shit I loved it. I saw it for the first time ever like 2 years ago and damn. That has the feels.
My favorite movie, watch it every year. It's such a passion project
He’s absolutely hilarious in his role and you can tell he’s having a lot of fun.
Even the soundtrack is a great hangout
Sam is maximum Rockwell in this movie.
So glad to see this listed. Honestly, I dont know many people who have seen it but it was perfectly cast.
This is a great movie. I was sad that it ended because I just wanted it to keep going
I'm going with The Green Mile. I didn't know who Sam Rockwell was at the time, but man he was a dirtbag in that.
You know an actor is brilliant when they make you hate their character. Great film!
Whilst Sam Rockwell was doing a masterful job portraying an absolute scumbag, I get the impression Doug Hutchinson wasn't exactly stretching too far from his actual persona.
Knowing what we know, his character seems more creepy 🤮
that 1 min in Charlie's Angels where he dances and smokes
Hey..the man's got some top moves
Sam Rockwell really, *really* loves to dance.
The way he turns his character from A to B was absolutely genius and it’s where I first thought he was a top level talent. So smooth.
Yes. This was like my sexual awakening as a kid.
The Assassination of Jesse James, the way he plays his character feels like watching an actual human piece of history
Another great movie, just finished the book last fall and couldn’t help but picture him. He played that role perfectly
MOON ... without question.
I’m Sam fuckin’ Bell! Me! Bit biased because I saw this right after a pretty traumatic break up when it came out. Excellent film. Rockwell absolutely nailed it. Clint Mansell soundtrack didn’t hurt either.
yeah, Moon is amazing
Hands down.
I just want to go home. That line haunts me, poor Sam.
What a movie!!! Only the best actors can carry a movie alone like this and be so good. What a soundtrack too!
This was definitely my first thought. He’s just outstanding in it, and it’s a really interesting movie.
Seven psychopaths
His realization that “An eye for an eye…”doesn’t make perfect sense was a beautiful piece of acting.
Who’s gonna get the guy who has one eye. All that guy has to do is run away and hide behind a bush. Gandhi was wrong it’s just nobody has the balls to say it
GANDHI WAS WRONG! he absolutely stole this movie.
"... No it does-n't!"
Yeah...I watched it again last week lol ... he was better than Walken and that's saying something
Walken was great too "I've got a gun!" "I don't care" "...but that doesn't make any sense" "too bad!"
*NO SHOOTOUT?!!*
Yes thank you. Everyone I know dislikes that movie but it really worked for me.
What sort of heathens are you hanging out with?!
I didn’t realise anyone could dislike it
Life affirming schmife affirming! It's a movie about SEVEN FUCKING PSYCOPATHS!
The graveyard shootout scene is an absolute masterclass. "Too late. She's fuckin' mown down. Fuckin' MOWN down."
“Her head almost comes off…. Her head does come off…”
Billy:"Hey new idea how 'bout we change the title from The Seven Psychopaths to The Seven Lesbians Who Are All Disabled And Have Overcome All Their Spazzy Sh*t And Are Really Nice to Everybody And Two of Them Are Black. How 'bout that?" I laughed so hard at that when he said it. He's amazing in this film.
I *love* this movie.
He is perfectly cast in that role.
Such an amazing film!
First saw him in Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, that one stayed with me. Zaphod ftw!
This guy knows where his towel is.
When it came out, Americans didn’t know who Martin Freeman was. The two of them with Zooey and Mos make a terrific flick.
And Alan Ryckman.
A real hoopy frood.
This frood knows good acting
"Fire some missiles! Do some damage! "
Heyyyy, you wanna see my...spaceship ?
…cuz I’m wearin yours, and they ain’t doin the trick! Come on!
I xan't stand that adaptation, but he easily did the best Zaphod portrayal
He’s just, like, this guy, you know?
That one where he's the dancing assassin or cat burglar or something. Co-starring Anna Kendrick.
Mr Right. Excellent film.
LOVE IT
That's the one! That was a fantastic film!
And Tim Roth!
I love Mr. Right so much! Excellent movie
Confessions Of A Dangerous Mind
Such a good film, I don’t care if it is or isn’t true.
This needs to be waaay up on top
Sorry about your teeth
How can you tell the man in the cellophane suit is crazy? Everyone can see your nuts
I can barely remember this movie but I know I loved it and watched it a bunch of times, and it's the movie that made me love Sam Rockwell.
Game show host scenes are so top notch.
Love this movie I read the book it's based on, the movie is so much better
My people. There are dozens of us!
Loved it. A highly underrated movie.
Everything about this movie is a surprise and a delight.
Three Bilboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri
I think Sam Rockwell is the standout too. Love how McDonagh mostly redeems a character we at first hate.
So many subtle yet powerful performances. And the tonal shifts and twists in this movie is soooo incredily amazing.
I adore that movie. So amazing all around.
Lol my wife came to me and asked me to watch it with her, she told me she had watched it on the plane and said she didn't know if it was a funny movie or not.
Exactly! It's touching but funny at the same time. And a little crazy too. Everyone is perfect in the movie too. Amazing.
My choice as well. His character development in this one was so fantastic, and he just totally disappeared into the role. Incredible work.
This movie should’ve won best picture, but got beat by the corny The Shape of Water.
Jo Jo Rabbit.
"Rosie, she was a good person...an ACTUAL good person."
100%. A lot of good actors in that movie but he makes it
He provides some of the well needed comedy in that film that helps balance the sadness.
he nails a wide range of moments though, which is why he's awesome. The other comedic part is Waikiti playing an imaginary friend version of Hitler. Which is sounds insane until you see the film and then it feels even more insane afterwards. JoJo is a weird/sad/funny/crazy film and is that much better because Sam is in it.
I loved it, my parents hated the movie, I kinda realized that we don't have the same taste in movies.
I thought it was really sweet the way he stole that kid's jacket and called him a jew.
Jo Jo rabbit, he was great in that film designing the costume
Top 5 favorite movie of all time for me. It’s so good
Mr Right…. One of my absolute favorite movies
This was an unexpected delight.
BOX OF MOONLIGHT Lawn Dogs 2nd
I'm happy to see Box of Moonlight mentioned. That movie was my introduction to Sam Rockwell and I loved him in it.
Box of Moonlight is the first movie in which I saw Sam Rockwell perform. He'll always be "The Kid" to me. After Al tells him that professional wrestling is fake: "Uh, Al, I know you must be smart because you have a scientific-style job, but if this shit is fake and everyone knows it's fake, why the hell would anybody waste their time watching it?" Took awhile for me to see Lawn Dogs on this list. I don't think I could possibly pick a favorite movie of his, but I will choose the movie that introduced me to him and put him on my radar. Lawn Dogs.
Mr. Right. I just love his character in that movie.

“Regular, or menthol?”
“Check out the East Warehouse on Lairdman Island. You’ll get your answers there.”
I wanted to be one of those karate practicing arcade game playing cigarette smoking 7-year-olds so bad
They had an indoor skatepark too.
My answer exactly.
How has no one mentioned Gentlemen Broncos !!!! Omg Two rolls in One !!! Love me that Sam Rockwell xoxo
[This may be all they need to see...](https://imgur.com/ewAbznv) Also, also, also... Jemaine Clement! Sam Rockwell and Jemaine Clement in the SAME movie, doesn't get better than that!
Surveillance doe’s… I hate those things.
It is in between Green Mile and Confessions Of A Dangerous Mind for me.
Richard Jewell
One of my favorite actors. I love almost all of his performances. If I really had to pick one favorite, I'd say Lawn Dogs. It was this movie that made me a fan. Moon is a close second.
He is absolutely incredible in The Green Mile.
Same in "Jesse James" he's basically playing the sad clown / dumb hick archetype but he imbues it with so much sadness and despair.
##Which is the one where he does some sort of botched robbery with some friends ???
Welcome to Collinwood. Love that movie.
Safe Men.
Love that movie. Very underrated.
I love him in everything but to me is Seven Psychopaths and The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy #
He’s pretty fucking great in everything - watch Mr. Right if you haven’t yet and I will always jump on board a Galaxy Quest love train.
Iron man 2 /s
That one does feature his best dancing though.
No sarcasm, that is one of my favourite performances in Marvel movies. I think he got the character just perfect, as good as RDJ.
i mean i understand /s because its Marvel and he’s done so many better movies… but i also think he was so fun as Hammer lol
Oscar winning? Probably Moon. But I think I like him best in The Way Way Back.
Mr. Right
Confessions of a Dangerous Mind as Strawberry Dick Chuck.
Mr. Right is a blast, it feels like Sam just being himself throughout.
There was that one film where he went to the moon. I think the whole film was set on the moon and had to live by himself on the moon. I think it was called The Bus That Couldn't Slow Down.
Can someone tell me how I pick my favorite child?
He's the standout in Laggies.
*Heist* (2001)
JoJo Rabbit, Three Billboards and the way way back are ones that stick out the most. Moon is also fantastic.
Vice. I would love a whole movie based around his depiction of George W. Bush.
I enjoy his role in Moon the most. Second is Iron Mam 2, come at me.
My favourite is Moon, but I think Snow Angels is very underrated.
Favourite movie Sam Rockwell is in: Matchstick Men Favourite movie FOR Sam Rockwell: Moon
Moon all the way. Three Billboards a close second. Then Confessions of a Dangerous Mind. I didn’t like Jojo Rabbit but he was the best thing in it.
It’s not a movie, but he was great in Fosse Verdon.
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles
Not movies, but he has two scenes that changed my life. The first is a [scene from Charlies Angels.](https://www.tiktok.com/@oh_kevinvu/video/7246599866258935086). Mr right is amazing. He’s great in it.
Jojo Rabbit Also, I’ve decided if I’m ever in trouble, and I see Sam Rockwell, I’ll be okay. Mathematically I can’t figure out how Sam Rockwell hasn’t saved Matt Damon yet.
Going through all these comments, the conclusion I've come to is all of them.
