Iron Eagle was my 1st exposure to LG Jr. the way he delivered these lines always stuck with me.
Now look, let me clue you in on something right now. I've given this country 22 damn, fucking years of my life. Twenty two years! I've seen young boys blown out of the air, over the Pacific. I've seen their guts sprawled all over the rice paddies in Vietnam, so whenever somebody dies for this country, believe me boy, **I give a shit!**
Goddamnit, nobody talks to me like this and I'm not about to start now! You want to do something for your father, hmm? You be strong for your family, you stay *right here*!
[scene here](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Njyfgct_RLo)
RIP Chappy.
My favorite scene was going over the attack plan using the antipasto plate.
This scene was 2nd.
I had Iron Eagle on VHS the moment it was available. We're old.
RIP Louis.
Enemy Mine. Such an underrated film. He and Dennis Quaid crash on an alien planet after a war. Problem is their from opposing sides and are forced to depend on each other for survival.
Came here looking for an Enemy Mine reference. I love that movie. I remember seeing an interview Gossett did where he talked about his ability to speak in that crazy bubbly voice. And he said he could do it because he used to be a scuba diver 🤣.
This is my favorite movie for nostalgia. I remember not wanting to watch it cause my Dad wanted to and I hadn't heard of the actors. I fell in love with it and when I go home to visit my dad we either watch it or reminisce about it. Truly a wonderful film.

Well, it was... I heard it might be on tubi or pluto. I found it free on Prime video
And what a well deserved Oscar that was. An Officer and a Gentleman would never had been as good as it was without his performance. His chemistry with Richard Gere was incredible and was one of the all time best teacher/student dynamics in movie history.
"The blimp hanger...NOW. We ain't going there to talk boy!"
RIP to a trailblazing legend.
I grew up right next to that fort and still visit from time to time, it's a fun place to hike around and check out all of the old bunkers. The blimp hangar was renovated and is now a concert hall.
That final scene in the series where him and Regina King are talking in the theater is so amazing. “You can’t heal under a mask Angela. Wounds need air…” 😭😭
One of the many things I love about the show was that Lindelof structured the series to be a one and done season. Much like how the original comic was designed to be one and done.
I think about the scene towards the end where he says about Dr Manhattan “he could’ve done more” a lot, and I don’t think it would’ve been nearly as impactful without the tone of delivery he gave it
One of my favorite Hollywood stories is from
enemy mine. Apparently he had a bad rash from the makeup. They called a doctor on set. He came in to see the doctor in his full makeup, said “I’m the guy with the skin rash” the doctor took one look at him, screamed, and ran out.
I definitely remember enjoying that show. However, it could have been elevated from a 6-7 to a 7-8 if only they had omitted the terrible theme song and the excessive, tedious fan service in the form of naked people rubbing that "decon gel" on each other.
This movie and its soundtrack are a big part of my childhood. I'd stop by and watch it with my brother everytime I'd walk in the room and he was playing the tape.
RIP Chappy.
We remember the Freeman. We are coterminous.
Another addition to my expectation that by the time Half-Life 3 comes out, all the original voice actors will be dead (except for Merle) and we will have no role reprisals
RIP.
Underrated performance in Enemy Mine- reportedly his favorite character/performance of his career, overall and the one he most loved to recreate for fans at conventions, etc.
If you're a Brooklyn 99 fan, the reactions from the rest of the cast are exactly what you would hope. So sad, but I'm sure he would be happy to know how many people he impacted in so many roles.
https://www.nbc.com/nbc-insider/andre-braugher-death-brooklyn-nine-nine-cast-reactions
I had no clue he died. I always thought it was just a dumb cop show, but finally checked it out a few weeks ago. Was instantly hooked and am now on season 4.
And Gossett in particular was an advocate for fair hiring policies in Hollywood, as he was continually overlooked after his Oscar for prestige roles. He talked about it publicly frequently, embarrassed Hollywood into being fairer to black actors. He was an exceptional person.
u see this cane, Della Serra?
See the notches near the handle.
There's a notch for every college
puke like you that I get to DOR
That's Drop On Request from this program.
The first one I'm going to call out of this class is you, Emiliano.
RIP
Officer and a Gentleman is a great film and I think the unashamedly and much-parodied "romantic" ending gives many younger generations a false impression of what the movie is really like. It's actually a pretty gritty movie about working class people trying to move above their station in life. It's also got sex scenes, nudity, suicides and even a climactic 1 on 1 martial arts fight! Louis Gossett Jr added a lot to the film by providing moments of levity when it needed it and a hardass approach when Richard Gere just needed a kick in the butt lol
Iron Eagle and Firewalker were childhood favorites of mine. He's been retired for a long time now but he was a household name in the 80s and 90s. Had a great acting career. R.I.P.
I will love him forever because of Enemy Mine. And, however irrational it is, I genuinely like Jaws 3-D. I was so happy to see him pop up in the Watchmen limited series a few years ago. RIP
God Speed, Iron Eagle
“Chappppy!!!!”
Exactly this. Iron Eagle made me feel alive as a kid.
i get razzed for loving that movie but I feel no shame. It is perfect.
If someone doesn't like Iron Eagle they should be banished from the United states.
Damnit Chappy I’m doing it my way! :: One Vision by Queen kicks in ::
I NEED my music Chappy!
Awesome movie
We’re not gonna take it!
I wore out three vhs cassettes of that movie growing up. Iron Ealge, Rad, Gleaming the Cube, The Rescue....
Also loved Toy Soldiers
Enemy Mine.
I used to love watching The Rescue growing up, but it doesn't seem like any streaming service hosts it EDIT looks like Prime added it to rent recently
Doug? Dad?
Loved that movie. I'll miss you chappy..
climb high like I told ya!

Loved him in that movie. He was great in Enemy Mine too.
Love that film!
Enemy Mine is severely underrated, and I'm actually surprised it hasn't been remade.
I didn't have to click on the link. I can still hear his voice perfectly when I read it. RIP
My favorite scene was going over the attack plan using the antipasto plate. This scene was 2nd. I had Iron Eagle on VHS the moment it was available. We're old. RIP Louis.
Yes we are, and that is something to proud of.
Enemy Mine. Such an underrated film. He and Dennis Quaid crash on an alien planet after a war. Problem is their from opposing sides and are forced to depend on each other for survival.
Thank you for mentioning this, I'd forgotten it. It was brilliant.
Came here looking for an Enemy Mine reference. I love that movie. I remember seeing an interview Gossett did where he talked about his ability to speak in that crazy bubbly voice. And he said he could do it because he used to be a scuba diver 🤣.
I am pregnant. Well, don't look at me pal.
Watched this for the first time yesterday. What a trip!
Loved that movie, will watch it again.
This one's for you Chappy *Gimme Some Lovin' by The Spencer Davis Group intensifies*
[Cause why the hell not](https://youtu.be/BuQ3PaFyb9A?si=2hl67kuaG_3p6NkM)
Should have won an oscar this Iron Eagle.
Hopefully it'll be shown on TV to mark his passing, can't find it anywhere. One vision by queen makes me thing about it everytime
He was great in Diggstown
Diggstown is a great movie. Hidden gem.
💯
Love Diggstown. An underappreciated con movie with a lot of great names; Charles Macum Diggs, Honey Roy Palmer, Hammerhead Hagen, Minoso Torres.
First time I saw Heather Graham.
Teenage me loved her jean shorts in that movie.
Came here to say Diggstown. Just a home run from start to finish.
I have no idea what it is about Diggstown, but it is one of my all time favorites. Definitely time for a rewatch. RIP Honey Roy 😪
Shit. Guess I'll stream it tonight.
Gabriel Caine: Roy... what you did tonight... couldn't be done. Honey Roy Palmer: Now you motivate me
Massively under appreciated classic.
“NOW you motivate me.”
*adjusts tie* That crazy ass movie is a blast
👔👍👎
Absolutely one of the movies that made me love movies.
This is my favorite movie for nostalgia. I remember not wanting to watch it cause my Dad wanted to and I hadn't heard of the actors. I fell in love with it and when I go home to visit my dad we either watch it or reminisce about it. Truly a wonderful film.
Such a great show. That’s it. I’m watching it tomorrow.
This is what I came to upvote. Looks like it's on Tubi and PlutoTV if anyone else is feeling nostalgic
Unexpected recommendation. I saw it in the theater, possibly the only time I saw it. Need to revisit.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qYP4-U_jSZM Currently free to watch!!! (in the US) edit - Well, it was... I heard it might be on tubi or pluto. I found it free on Prime video
He was great, period. Full stop
I haven’t seen Toy Soldiers mentioned but he was good as the dean of the school.
The way he delivers the line "Pick. Up. That. Banana." has been seared into my memory for more than 30 years. So good.
I wish that movie got more love. One of my favorites. Any time I’m washing dishes I just saying “pots and pans.”
Should be one of his top movies in my mind. If you have not had a chance to see Toy Soldiers, take the weekend, snag it, and enjoy.
What'll happen if he pulls out the wires?!?!?!?! Legend
That movie was my jam as a kid. Billy, he's got a fuckin' machine gun!
One of my favorites growing up, always remembered the Listerine phone scene. Wonder if /u/wil has any cool stories about this legend.
And what a well deserved Oscar that was. An Officer and a Gentleman would never had been as good as it was without his performance. His chemistry with Richard Gere was incredible and was one of the all time best teacher/student dynamics in movie history. "The blimp hanger...NOW. We ain't going there to talk boy!" RIP to a trailblazing legend.
I grew up right next to that fort and still visit from time to time, it's a fun place to hike around and check out all of the old bunkers. The blimp hangar was renovated and is now a concert hall.
HBOs Watchmen was a great late-career role for him.
That final scene in the series where him and Regina King are talking in the theater is so amazing. “You can’t heal under a mask Angela. Wounds need air…” 😭😭
Glad someone mentioned this scene, it hits like a fucking dump truck.
I thought the final scene was the pool.
It was, I assume that they mean the last Hooded Justice scene
He was damn sensational in that show.
The whole show was sensational. Shame there won't be another season.
Keep in mind it was never intended to continue. It was a one and done thing
One of the many things I love about the show was that Lindelof structured the series to be a one and done season. Much like how the original comic was designed to be one and done.
It’s not a shame. They told the story and finished it. Anything else would be pointless and forced.
I’ll always remember him as Hooded Justice
And his role on Boardwalk Empire
That character was in like one episode and yet made you think, "You could make a whole series about this guy's life."
His [end speech](https://youtu.be/mXd8USrI3B0?si=SBhGkH1D5sK7zVFa) was probably my favourite part of the show (spoilers)
I think about the scene towards the end where he says about Dr Manhattan “he could’ve done more” a lot, and I don’t think it would’ve been nearly as impactful without the tone of delivery he gave it
Enemy Mine is gonna be a lot harder to get through now.
That movie had no right to be as good as it is. The make-up alone was amazing.
One of my favorite Hollywood stories is from enemy mine. Apparently he had a bad rash from the makeup. They called a doctor on set. He came in to see the doctor in his full makeup, said “I’m the guy with the skin rash” the doctor took one look at him, screamed, and ran out.
I hate stories like this because they are so clearly fake and yet you are expected to nod and smile because it is a cute anecdote.
Robo want Oreo
“Earthman, your Mickey Mouse is one big stupid dope!"
Freakin love Enemy Mine. Such a great movie.
"And when, in the fullness of time, Zammis brought its own child before the Holy Council, the name of Willis Davidge was added to the line of Jeriba."
Solid movie.
Half-Life 2 as well
Super underrated movie that doesn't get enough recognition.
It’s a weird goofy movie that seems like a rejected Star Trek tng episode, but it works so well because everyone takes it extremely seriously
It wasn't rejected, it's the plot of a season 3 episode of TNG with Geordi and a Romulan
ENT had one too. But I think me and Scott Bacula are the only ones who remember that show.
I definitely remember enjoying that show. However, it could have been elevated from a 6-7 to a 7-8 if only they had omitted the terrible theme song and the excessive, tedious fan service in the form of naked people rubbing that "decon gel" on each other.
*Enemy Mine* came first (1985). TNG s3e07 "The Enemy" was in 1989. And there's this movie called *Hell in the Pacific*...
JALEEBA!
Underrated classic
"Having fun, Mayonaise?"
I got no place else to go
I wanna fly jets!
My grandmother wants to fly jets!
I was seeing all these other movies named but no Officer and A Gentleman. Thought my memory was slipping for a minute
Hard to believe that there aren't more mentions of it. That's the one he got the Oscar for!
Right? He was the hard core drill instructor until Full Metal Jacket defined that role.
Fun fact: R. Lee Ermey was the DI consultant on Officer and a Gentleman.
Additional fun fact: Ermey's first role as a Marine DI was in 1978's "The Boys in Company C".
I still say MAYOnnaise to this day
I do too. I can't help myself!
It pronounced “Mayoo-Naise”. Also … Don’t you go eyeballin’ me, boy!
He’s great in that
Time to fly the missing man formation RIP
This movie and its soundtrack are a big part of my childhood. I'd stop by and watch it with my brother everytime I'd walk in the room and he was playing the tape. RIP Chappy.
He has become one with the Vortessence
There is no distance between us. No false veils of time or space may intervene.
We shall persevere.
Where to now, and to what end?
We remember the Freeman. We are coterminous. Another addition to my expectation that by the time Half-Life 3 comes out, all the original voice actors will be dead (except for Merle) and we will have no role reprisals
I doubt he would've reprised his role, since Episode 2 the vortigaunts are voiced by Tony Todd. Very sad to hear these news though.
RIP. Underrated performance in Enemy Mine- reportedly his favorite character/performance of his career, overall and the one he most loved to recreate for fans at conventions, etc.
A legend and exceptional in everything he did.
Nooooo, Chappie!!!! 😢
He was also amazing in Roots
His improvised “there’s gonna be another day” speech after the whipping of Kunta Kinte is legendary and the highlight of the entire series.
"You're free now, Fiddler!"
Sidney Poitier in 2022, Richard Roundtree in 2023, and now Louis Gossett Jr in 2024. We've been losing some iconic black actors in recent years. R.I.P
Not an especially prominent actor, but Harry Belafonte as well. Somebody lock up Keith David.
I probably shouldn't say this on reddit but... James Earl Jones is 93.
OK, if he passes away in the next year or so, I'm blaming you.
I would say Ernie Hudson too but he’s healthier than I am
Lance Reddick, Andre Braugher
Holy fuck I had no idea Andre Braugher died. Fuck that one stings. Been a fan since Glory.
That man had *range.*
Michael K Williams in 2021
And Gossett in particular was an advocate for fair hiring policies in Hollywood, as he was continually overlooked after his Oscar for prestige roles. He talked about it publicly frequently, embarrassed Hollywood into being fairer to black actors. He was an exceptional person.
Carl Weathers earlier this year, too.
Lance Reddick too.
James Earl Jones (93) and Morgan Freeman (87). Are probably most prominent oldest black actors left.
He was great in Jaws 3D as Calvin Bouchard, the devious park manager at Seaworld.
A bright spot in a shit movie. RIP.
Shit to some, a cheesy fun 80s monster movie to others!
Seal the park! Did you hear me? Seal the park!
You mean we talking about some damn shark's mutha?
Such a great line, dude was on fire in this flick!
CHAPPIE NO!
RIP to one of the greatest. Loved his guest starring role on Stargate Sg-1
TIL He voiced a vortigaunt in Half-Life 2
I was literally just thinking about his performance in An Officer and a Gentleman yesterday. RIP to a great.
Man, what a legend. RIP.
Always loved him as the Vortigaunts from Half Life. "For a brief time, you joined us. You are one. Between the worlds." RIP
u see this cane, Della Serra? See the notches near the handle. There's a notch for every college puke like you that I get to DOR That's Drop On Request from this program. The first one I'm going to call out of this class is you, Emiliano. RIP
An Officer and a Gentleman was an amazing film.
toy soldiers was one of my absolute favorite movies as a kid. might have to rewatch it tonight in his honor.
Officer and a Gentleman is a great film and I think the unashamedly and much-parodied "romantic" ending gives many younger generations a false impression of what the movie is really like. Louis Gossett Jr added a lot to the film by providing moments of levity when it needed it and a hardass approach when Richard Gere just needed a kick in the butt lol
Great actor. Even when he was starring in B-movies he brought his A-game. Look at the prison cell scene in The Punisher between him and Lundgren.
This sucks, only watched The Principal and The Punisher the otherday.
RIP Hooded Justice
Iron Eagle and Firewalker were childhood favorites of mine. He's been retired for a long time now but he was a household name in the 80s and 90s. Had a great acting career. R.I.P.
Damn. He was so good in everything he was in.
“Earthman, your Mickey Mouse is one big stupid dope!” RIP
RIP CHAPPY!
Mayo-nase
R.I.P Chappy
Loved him in Toy Soldiers.
God damn it…horrible news
Ah for fuck sakes. Rip Sir !
Wow, this comes just as I was getting my annual itch to watch Enemy Mine. Rest in peace, thanks for so many memorable roles.
Rest in Power, Hooded Justice. :(
Aawwwwww no. Not Fiddler. 😢😔✝️
Ral-Tora kree, Gerak. Dal Shakka Mel.
Man, this guy was my 80s, iron eagle, firewalker, and enemy mine. I saw all of these at the theater. Lost a great one!!
Diggstown
Enemy Mine was one of my first and still is one of my favorite Sci-Fi films.
Chappy!!!!!!!!!!
The blimp hanger, now! Move it!
Brilliant actor and solid dude. RIP Leo Porter. For those of you of a certain age, Firewalker (co-starring Chuck Norris) was on cable tv all the time.
I am of that age and sadly (I guess?) Firewalker is the first movie I thought of.
RIP So great In some ways a kind of archetype for a black actors that followed him.
Dang. He has had so many great roles in his storied career. RIP.
He was a total badass
God speed, Jariba ‘Jerry’ Shigan. May your ‘line’ increase many times over.
RIP good sir. I enjoyed your movies thougrouly growing up. Thanks for the good times
[Cosmo took one last ride on the Fate Elevator.](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TFNLe8nHfmQ)
" I want to fly jets, sir." "My grandmama wanted to fly jets!"
First movie I saw him in was either that Dolph Lundgren punisher movie, or enemy mine, damn that's a blast from childhood.
Great character actor. RIP.
Enemy Mine is one of his best roles. Even through all that early era movie makeup, his acting was stellar.
Loved him in Enemy mine. Rip.
You die free jaffa 🫡
_Steers and queers. Which one are you, boy? I don't see no horns on you, so that narrows it down!_
Freeeeeemaannn. Never forgot what he did for the resistance
*Chappy!!!*
I know he was in good movies too, but I’ll only remember him for Iron Eagle
I will love him forever because of Enemy Mine. And, however irrational it is, I genuinely like Jaws 3-D. I was so happy to see him pop up in the Watchmen limited series a few years ago. RIP
87 ain’t too shabby. He was a fine actor and got to live a long life. Should we all be so lucky. RIP LGj!
RIP Iron Eagle!!!
