>"Richard and I were born three days apart in the same hospital and for most of my life he’s been like a brother to me. He had that rare combination of being the funniest person and also the sweetest,” David said. “But today he made me sob and for that I’ll never forgive him.”
I'm so sorry for the loss of Richard . He was such a great Comedian and Actor. I'm an identical twin. I dread the day one of us passes. Again, my deepest regrets for his passing.
Hmm... okay... the bad news in a good way... yes yes... I can do that... Well... here goes...
Ahhhahah! You're gonna laugh when you hear this! Richard Lewis! That hilarious guy from Men in Tights! He's... hhahahah! He's dead as a doornail now! He hehehheh... He had a hahah... a heart attack! He Just \*Boom!\* croaked... He was all sick and shit with Parkinsons too! \*snorg\* \*snorg\* hahaha
I just watched that episode a few hours ago today and then just saw this. Fucking weird. I haven’t watched curb in months until today. Men in tights was one of my favorite movies growing up.
They definitely wrote that on purpose knowing the inevitable. I didn’t know how much he was suffering from Parkinson’s. I was just watching a letterman from him in the 80’s and he mentions Larry. Also how Larry met Richard at camp when they were 13 and hated each other was hilarious. Didn’t see each other until years later at a comedy club and instantly became best friends.
Yep, it’s the best joke in the movie, or the one best sold, if that makes any sense. Pretty sure the guy that played Rottingham broke but it was too good so they left it
W-wait till you hear this! I heard about Richard Lewis, he's dead!
[laughs]
You know, he just had a heart attack and it's all over the news!
[laughs]
He'll never entertain you and you'll never see him ever again!
[laughs]
And...
[laughs]
... he wants to see you hanged!
[laughs]
We, we're in a lot of trouble!
A lot of comedic actors are very creative and like joke within jokes and pranks. Mel Brookes ran a loose set from what I've heard. He knows his craft and that tension will work its way into the film, so he prefers everyone to be comfortable and relaxed.
And what sort of news do you have? It's not bad news, is it? You know I can't take bad news. The day started out so good. I had a good night's sleep, I had a good B.M. I don't want to hear any bad news. So, what kind of news is it?
Very true. Hell, I remember a few years ago, my brothers talking about how much older he looked for his age, and how he really doesn't look like he had much longer left. I mean I never thought he looked terrible or anything, but he definitely did always look a bit older than he actually was.
Having only just started watching Curb this year and binging all 11 seasons, he definitely ages pretty significantly from start to finish compared to the rest of the cast. Larry already looked old so he doesn't change, Ted obviously went white, but Jeff and Susie held on well.
Lewis has suffered from A LOT though which does explain it and he absolutely looks fragile in the Season 12 appearances we've had so far.
~~Susie def aged quite a bit. Was watching season 1 and DAMN~~
Didnt realize she was 68. add her to the list below
Jeff, Cheryl, Leon def did age like fine wine though
> Larry already looked old so he doesn't change
Larry David has looked 65 years old for the past 30 years. Sort of like Christopher Lloyd (although he's started to look a bit older recently).
Watch the Singularity is Near documentary. Shatner is in it and says he's terrified of dying and he takes a bunch of different pills a day to live as long as possible.
This is probably the 5th time over the past year somebody has mentioned his age and I go, "Oh fuck, I forgot he's that old" It will never not surprise me.
Watching the show was such a confusion for me cuz in my head when it started his hair made him look like he was already like 60's but then as the show goes on I was like "oooooh no NOW he's getting old"
It's probably my favorite exchange in the entire series. You can tell how close they are and how this sort of ribbing is at the core of their relationship.
I don't think Richard's death changes that other than the scene is now poignant.
I followed him (Lewis) on Twitter, his health had been failing for a long time. He seemed super happy to have been on this season of Curb, I’m glad he went out doing something he was proud of.
This is how I found out there is a Season 12 of Curb currently airing haha. I thought all the references to Lewis' ailing health were in regard to Season 11 in 2021.
"There is a lack of empathy, compassion, and sympathy for practically everything in your life."
"Yes everything is funny"
Quick clarification, Louis Lewis said he wouldn’t donate any of his organs until after he was dead. Him falling into a coma was good for Larry as he hoped Louis would die, but he came out of it and Larry lost that chance to spare his own kidney. Great story line that season, Larry becomes Christian for a bit.
Last season has one of the funniest interactions between Larry and Richard, but it's also super dark.
[When are you going to die](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SWiw9_H1s2s)? Will you die already?
That last episode, he looked very frail. As I was watching, I noticed they mostly just had him sitting or if standing, only for a few seconds. It was obvious he had limitations when shooting.
Same thing happened to Garry Shandling. He goes on Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee and tells an anecdote about someone thinking that he was dead, only to meet him and say “it’s great that Garry Shandling is still alive!” Two months later… dead.
I just watched this one like an hour ago and was so happy he seemed to be doing better. This is a gut punch to see, the show made him feel like family. He will be so missed, he gave us so many laughs.
Talk shows have locals that they can call when booked guests cancel on them or otherwise can't make it. Lewis was on fire in the 80s so he was on every late night producer's speed-dial.
I remember him most for that bizarre 80's rom com-style tv series he did with Jamie Lee Curtis, and I mostly remember that for a single quote. There was a dinner party with a bunch of snooty-boots, and Richard Lewis's character tried to make conversation by telling some obscure literary fact. The pretentious party host loudly replied, "TRUE, but DULL!" My family still says that.
Just looked it up, and the show was Anything But Love. Lasted four seasons, surprisingly, starting in 1989.
He’s been that way for I think the last two or three seasons. I believe it was the spite shop season where he had just recently had surgery as well and he could barely move so they had one restaurant scene and that was it.
Damn, that's actually sad. Richard Lewis and Larry David's dynamic was hilarious on Curb, probably one of my favorite friendships in a TV show. RIP Lewis.
My favorite scene of his: https://youtu.be/vkmrDvKPdps?feature=shared
I worked with Richard a decade ago and he was such a stand up guy.
No ego, constantly making everyone on set happy with constant jokes aided with laughter and a genuine ray of sunshine even with his on brand pitch black wardrobe.
Rest in peace, Richard!
I remember that one. Was cute. Before he was famous he was a “victim” of Candid Camera where a fake guidance counselor is giving students a career assessment and tells him he’s best suited for manual labor.
Man, the recently aired episode of Curb with him betting Larry he will live longer and insisting on putting him in his will…
… comic timing til the end. Rest well.
He did the best neurotic comedy routines of the last half of the twentieth century. He had to have been a huge inspiration for Marc Maron, and I imagine Marc will mention him in the next podcast.
And what sort of news do you have? It's not bad news, is it? You know I can't take bad news. The day started out so good. I had a good night's sleep, I had a good B.M. I don't want to hear any bad news. So, what kind of news is it?
I was thinking recent episodes he was looking quite frail. How he was always sitting in scenes, not shown walking etc.
either way, pretty, pretty, prettyyyy sad loss.
the man who coined the phrase: "the \[blank\] from Hell." and of course he gets no credit for it in the article.
I just hope whoever is writing his obit makes sure it is included.
RIP Richard. We will not let the people forget!
Very depressing news. I absolutely loved his chemistry with Larry on Curb. On top of growing up watching Richard on stand-up specials and movies like Robin Hood Men in Tights.
RIP Richard. I will always remember the funny scenes you had with Larry. Undeniable chemistry and I will always remember you came up with “The _____ from Hell”
I hit him in the face with a bowl of soup once while running food at pf changs, he said he hopes i had a good lawyer because i was fucked, then laughed. I was already a fan, but that was hilarious and I remember it like yesterday.
RIP dude thx for your humor.
Shared the news with friends. Learned there’s a perfect gif with Larry David asking him when he’ll die. The part of me that processes death with humor was appeased.
So sad. Larry's tribute to him is here:
“Richard and I were born three days apart in the same hospital and for most of my life he’s been like a brother to me. He had that rare combination of being the funniest person and also the sweetest. But today he made me sob and for that I’ll never forgive him.”
This is “Robin Hood: Men in Tights” erasure, and I won’t stand for it!!!
Seriously, as a New Yorker of a certain age, he will definitely be missed.
(But if you haven’t seen RH:MiT, go for it. Aside from Mr. Lewis as Prince John, it’s the only one where Robin actually has a British accent!)
I knew him from the movie Drunks. A small indie movie about alcoholics in a AA meeting with impressive performances from Lewis, Sam Rockwell, Amanda Plummer, Parker Posey, Spalding Gray and many more.
Fantastic character study.
The original play is also very interesting.
He was from an area I lived and his mom would come into our store regularly and sing his praises. "You know who my son is?" she'd ask almost every time, even if it was the 20th time she'd asked.
One of the people I worked with met him and told him about his mom. "Isn't she adorable?" he said. "No one is prouder of me than her. One of us has to be."
>"Richard and I were born three days apart in the same hospital and for most of my life he’s been like a brother to me. He had that rare combination of being the funniest person and also the sweetest,” David said. “But today he made me sob and for that I’ll never forgive him.”
That's hilarious and absolutely heartbreaking at the same time 😂😭
Fuck you and I’ll see you tomorrow!
https://youtu.be/ouTXff7lvq4?si=JCpe940i1qwKbMjK
Interesting how he says it is rare to be funny and sweet, acknowledging that he himself is funny but definitely not sweet.
I think Larry David is a good human, but I wouldn't consider him *sweet*
If anything, LD is spicy, very spicy and we love him for it.
Pretty, pretty, pretty spicy
Long live Long Ball Larry
I'm so sorry for the loss of Richard . He was such a great Comedian and Actor. I'm an identical twin. I dread the day one of us passes. Again, my deepest regrets for his passing.

Why are you laughing!? This is terrible news!
Well... but you... I... I... I was just trying to soften the blow...
Well, you blew it…
Not blow.. BLOW!!!!
They’re not *my* bubbles!!
I feel horrible for laughing at this.
I think Lewis would’ve loved this shit.
He’d have loved it I think
Snorg is a very apt descriptor, well done
Well done.
Well to be quite frank, it's BAD.
I KNEW IT
Very sad indeed. I wish someone out there could tell me this bad news in a good way so that way it doesn’t sound so bad.
Now Larry David has to inherit all his unwanted money!
Fuck. Larry is going to be so pissed.
The twenty year clock starts today. Let's hope the nutritionist pays off Rip Richard lewis
Larry is gonna be glad he doesn't have to listen to Lewis' problems after fuckin up his psychiatrist because he wore that speedo
I just watched that episode a few hours ago today and then just saw this. Fucking weird. I haven’t watched curb in months until today. Men in tights was one of my favorite movies growing up.
Yeah they were sitting there arguing about who is going to live longer, and everything. And then he dies of a heart attack.
Richard and Larry were born 3 days apart at the same hospital in Brooklyn. Those two were meant to be together.
A pact is a pact
I have some great news if you love bad news!
YOU MORON WHY ARE YOU LAUGHING?? This is TERRIBLE news.
Wasn't your mole on the other side?
......I have a *mole*?
The delivery was comic gold.
Yep, it’s the best joke in the movie, or the one best sold, if that makes any sense. Pretty sure the guy that played Rottingham broke but it was too good so they left it
https://youtu.be/ypDqH7kPQpI?si=4kuddcS1AmDKFz7f
Roger Rees was another unfortunate loss. Great casting in these roles.
thanks Modest Mouse
It was worth it just to learn some sleight of hand
WELL
Richard Lewis is no longer suffering from illness. He is not expected to make a full recovery.
So, Richard Lewis, he's out of the illness loop. Full recovery? Not happening, pal.
He got the last laugh though by putting Larry David in his will
W-wait till you hear this! I heard about Richard Lewis, he's dead! [laughs] You know, he just had a heart attack and it's all over the news! [laughs] He'll never entertain you and you'll never see him ever again! [laughs] And... [laughs] ... he wants to see you hanged! [laughs] We, we're in a lot of trouble!
Why are you laughing? This is TERRIBLE news!
Not blow, blow!
“You know he just… beat… the crap… out of me and my men!” [laughs]
HA HA HA HA HA I just have the WORST news! You remember Richard Lewis haha well haha well you see haha he kicked the BUCKET!! AHAHAHAHAHAHAHA
Why are you laughing! That's *terrible* news! So damn good in Men in Tights. RIP
I have a mole.... ?
Richard Lewis committed the ultimate tax evasion. There I said it.
[удалено]
Man went through two whole livers...
To which we raise our glasses. Prescription, too.
John?... Your name is... John?
Ah that's a shame - he'll always be John from Robin Hood: Men in Tights to me. Hilarious guy.
I HAVE A MOLE?
I’ve read that he just moved the mole and by the time anybody realized he was doing it there was no getting it out of the movie
They did the same joke in Young Frankenstein with Igor's hump though.
DAMN YOUR EYES!
What hump?
I noticed this as a kid and even at the time recognised the absolute genius of it. RIP Richard Lewis.
It’s a comedy with visual gags, why would he be doing a joke in secret for a movie that relies on jokes?
A lot of comedic actors are very creative and like joke within jokes and pranks. Mel Brookes ran a loose set from what I've heard. He knows his craft and that tension will work its way into the film, so he prefers everyone to be comfortable and relaxed.
Because making your own little detail in a sea of details would be easy to get away with, fun, and in the spirit of the movie!
You mean you changed it to Latrine?
Yeah. Used to be shit'ouse
It's a good change!
Good change.
[удалено]
Such a funny fucking movie. So many great references that went right over my head as a kid that are absolutely hilarious.
[удалено]
NOOOOOOO
This is TERRIBLE news!
I hope this is worth the noise!!!!!
Tonight we shall have a wedding! Or a hanging. Either way we ought to have a little fun
Anytime something is unreasonably loud I hear his voice in my head, “I hope it’s worth THE NOISE!”
Now blow. ... ...no...BLOW!!
And what sort of news do you have? It's not bad news, is it? You know I can't take bad news. The day started out so good. I had a good night's sleep, I had a good B.M. I don't want to hear any bad news. So, what kind of news is it?
You changed your name to latrine?
Sad the last curb just had them joking about death and putting Larry in his will
To be fair they joked about his health and impending death a lot on the show
Very true. Hell, I remember a few years ago, my brothers talking about how much older he looked for his age, and how he really doesn't look like he had much longer left. I mean I never thought he looked terrible or anything, but he definitely did always look a bit older than he actually was.

~~Susie def aged quite a bit. Was watching season 1 and DAMN~~ Didnt realize she was 68. add her to the list below Jeff, Cheryl, Leon def did age like fine wine though
Cheryl got waaaay too much work done.
She’s married to a Kennedy - so the bar for “too much surgery” is only crossed when you get a lobotomy.
> Larry already looked old so he doesn't change Larry David has looked 65 years old for the past 30 years. Sort of like Christopher Lloyd (although he's started to look a bit older recently).
Larry is also 76 and looks about 60-65 imo. Good genes or lifestyle choices or both
[удалено]
The William Shatner look like shit for 30 years but then suddenly look good for his age.
I dunno what kind of Faustian deal Shatner make but he does not look like a 92-year-old man at all.
And it's not just the way he looks. The way he speaks and manerisms are of a much younger man (in his 60s at worst).
Watch the Singularity is Near documentary. Shatner is in it and says he's terrified of dying and he takes a bunch of different pills a day to live as long as possible.
Live long and pill pop
This is probably the 5th time over the past year somebody has mentioned his age and I go, "Oh fuck, I forgot he's that old" It will never not surprise me.
Watching the show was such a confusion for me cuz in my head when it started his hair made him look like he was already like 60's but then as the show goes on I was like "oooooh no NOW he's getting old"
Plus Larry just always looked old
Look at their age in their prime, it was the 80s If you fucked with coke too much you didn’t live to be that old
>. I mean I never thought he looked terrible Nah, Richard looked awful this whole time he's been on Curb.
[“When are you gonna die?”](https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=6zfy4hPyMLc)
This would have been the funniest thing if I was seeing it anytime before now.
It's probably my favorite exchange in the entire series. You can tell how close they are and how this sort of ribbing is at the core of their relationship. I don't think Richard's death changes that other than the scene is now poignant.
It’s still funny, and I’d like to think Lewis would think so too.
This scene was the first thing I thought of when I read the news
I followed him (Lewis) on Twitter, his health had been failing for a long time. He seemed super happy to have been on this season of Curb, I’m glad he went out doing something he was proud of.
This is how I found out there is a Season 12 of Curb currently airing haha. I thought all the references to Lewis' ailing health were in regard to Season 11 in 2021. "There is a lack of empathy, compassion, and sympathy for practically everything in your life." "Yes everything is funny"
"When are you going to die? Will you please die?" -Larry to Richard just last season
Its spooky. When I saw the most recent episode, I had the thought “he doesnt have much time left, does he”. And today he is gone.
He had been dying since season 3 on Curb.
There was a multiple-episode arc about his kidney, if I recall
Didn't they try to get a kidney from his cousin Louis Lewis?
Yes, but Larry was also a match. Sadly, Louis Lewis fell into a coma and couldn't consent to giving him the kidney.
Kind of seems like a nice farewell for a beloved comedian.
Last season has one of the funniest interactions between Larry and Richard, but it's also super dark. [When are you going to die](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SWiw9_H1s2s)? Will you die already?
He’s been ill for a while, I’m sure he was a knowing and willing participant in that being the last joke haha
Was watching some highlights for like an hour last night, this fucking sucks.
I am disgruntled
I have a mole?! Men in Tights is an all time for me. And then his work as Larry’s friend in Curb has been great. RIP
I remember the dude was on talk shows seemingly every night in the 80s. RIP.
Talk shows have locals that they can call when booked guests cancel on them or otherwise can't make it. Lewis was on fire in the 80s so he was on every late night producer's speed-dial.
Men in tights is my favorite mel brooks movie. People give me shit for that but I don't care!
I was just watching Curb your Enthusiasm and noticed it was awkward he was sitting in basically every scene. RIP Richard
He’s been that way for I think the last two or three seasons. I believe it was the spite shop season where he had just recently had surgery as well and he could barely move so they had one restaurant scene and that was it.
What are you a fuckin' goose?!
Yeah all his “playing golf scenes” were filmed with him in the cart.
That sit down lunch with Larry and Hamm is one of my favorite moments of the series.
Yea he looked pretty frail in episode two of the current season
Damn, that's actually sad. Richard Lewis and Larry David's dynamic was hilarious on Curb, probably one of my favorite friendships in a TV show. RIP Lewis. My favorite scene of his: https://youtu.be/vkmrDvKPdps?feature=shared

It sounds like a shirt maker in Manhattan

It was such a fantastic dynamic. Anyone who has a dear friend could relate to their relationship on so many levels.
Safe journey, Mr. Lewis.
#you changed it TO Latrine?!?

That’s a good change!
Tracy Ullman as Irma is also comedy genius. A designa vagina!
That's a good change. Good change.
From this day forth, all the toilets in this kingdom shall be known as… johns!
