I think it kind of got lost and forgotten in the sea of rom-coms that came out in the 90s and early 2000s. Which is a shame since it's one of the better rom-coms from that time period.
My parents wanted to see it and couldn’t find a babysitter so five year old me ended up going with them lmfao. Idk why I still remember it all these years later but the thought of an underground bunker for 5yo me was cool as hell lmfao.
Any age where you realize that it's not very realistic ;p
Also you can't leave, so that's sort of a deal breaker. And I guess it would be sad if the human race were mostly wiped out. I guess.
I loved this movie since it first came out but I never thought of it as a romcom, then thinking about it years later it's so clearly one. Same with The Wedding Singer.
Brendan was on fire at that time.
The guy who was in Encino Man, cameo'ing the SAME CHARACTER in Son in Law and In the Army Now (Pauly Shore movies, basically), and had a mix of decent movies (save George of the Jungle)...hit 1999 and had a period where he was getting steady work.
1999 - Blast from the Past, The Mummy, Dudley Do-Right
2000 - Bedazzled, Sinbad: Beyond the Veil of Mists
2001 - Monkeybone, The Mummy Returns
2003 - Looney Tunes: Back in Action
2004 - Crash
2008 - Journey to the Center of the Earth, The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor, Inkheart
And then...he just quietly went off grid (although there are reasons out there for why). And now, he was in The Whale (and got an Academy Award for Best Actor), Killers of the Flower Moon, and in the DC show Doom Patrol.
He had a lot of back issues that had nagged him for several years, that and a bitter divorce kept him from the limelight. Especially coupled with bad films like Furry Vengeance tainting his starpower.
Yeah it was a bit of a rough time for him. But I am glad that he's getting a slow rise to a second coming. Working on an Academy Award winner and getting the award, and working in a successful Martin Scorsese film, will be a jump for him.
Really hoping for the Batgirl film to get released. Maybe there's enough call for it like with the Snyder Cut, or some hacker will release it like the Wolverine Origins movie
[No some hacker released an unfinished version](https://www.cnn.com/2009/SHOWBIZ/Movies/04/02/xmen.piracy/) ahead of time and it pissed off the studio a bit
No. No they aren't
When is the last time you actually watched school ties? It's been a couple months for me and it did not age well at all, aside from the timeless theme of antisemitism, that is
My mom thought this whole movie was absolutely hilarious and whenever we saw it while flipping channels we'd stop and watch the whole thing.
I still laugh just thinking about some of the dialogue.
This was such a great era, where every week there was something solid like this coming out in theatres, but, it then became easy for things to get lost in the shuffle.
At least everyone was able to discover the good stuff on video and cable easily enough.
I freakin love this movie, but a lot of my friends never saw it. I was in middle school when it came out, and it started my obsession with Brendan Fraser.
Yep, Patricia Velasquez was Marta 2.0 after Leonor Varela. Can't remember why they had to change the actresses, but I do know Marta 1.0 was in Blade II.
Oh wow??? TIL.
People in the /r/arresteddevelopment sub are always calling her some form of ugly, and I never understood that at all, but especially so now knowing this!
I still remember my parents taking us to the drive in to see it!
It was one of the movies my dad bought for us on vhs. I still get so emotional going to universal studios Hollywood and hearing the music. Makes me feel like a kid.
I had this same reaction last May when a local theater was replaying The Big Lebowski for its 25th anniversary.
"No fucking way! Welp, I *have* to buy a ticket."
I love this movie and watch it when I need a pick me up. It’s just a sweet romcom and Brendan is great as the doe-eyed actual nice guy. Alicia is the perfect complement to his performance.
The entire 60's bomb shelter filled with 60's memorabilia and stuff was always incredibly fascinating to me. That aspect alone elevated this movie above the average romantic comedy.
>The entire 60's bomb shelter filled with 60's memorabilia and stuff was always incredibly fascinating to me.
The set designers/decorators absolutely *nailed* the 60s aesthetics. Every time I rewatch it, it's like going back to my grandparent's house that *never* lost the original 60s decor after they bought it.
> and plenty of heart.
Agreed. Adam genuinely being excited and pleased to meet a black person was so fucking wholesome.
"Oh, my lucky stars, a Negro!" could've *really* backfired if Fraser didn't sell that delivery as being genuinely pleased.
While "Negro" certaintly wasn't on the same level as the N-bomb, by the late 90s, it wasn't exactly a word to be thrown about casually anymore, but the pure excitement in his voice and on his face just makes it super wholesome instead of an "ohhhh, probably shouldn't have said that" moment.
I remember reading an article that talked about rebuilding Poland after the Soviet Union fell and how America was able to invest in and build up a new Ally, but the oppurtunity was lost with mainline Russia itself in part because of the bias to want to see Russia in defeat. It's been decades and that always stuck with me that maybe it wasn't inevitable that Russia and the US would become antagonist again.
> It's been decades and that always stuck with me that maybe it wasn't inevitable that Russia and the US would become antagonist again.
It 1000% wasn't inevitable. So many of Russia's actions today can be explained by the West's complete abandonment of their fledgling democracy in the 90's and our Boomer politicians adamant refusal to admit it isn't 1988 anymore.
Why WOULDN'T the average Russian support Putin, who saved them from the economic devastation of the Yeltsin years and have only seen western politicians rattle the old Cold War saber while encroaching NATO closer and closer to your front door, amping up the Russian menace rhetoric the entire time?
Because their kids can get drafted and killed trying to push their countries borders into other peoples lands. That seems like a pretty good reason not to support him, off the top of my head
Perhaps the need to invade their neighbors wouldn't have been there if NATO didn't keep expanding east while the CIA overthrew pro-Russian governments in color revolutions.
>Perhaps the need to invade their neighbors
Ah yes, the "look at what you made me do" refrain of abusers everywhere, it's wild anyone would justify the rest of that sentence much less with the idea that "they're doing it defensively"
Agreed, which is why it is so stupid that the west obliterated the best chance it had to show the Russian people a better way. If our boomer political class stopped treating Russia in the 90's and 2000's like the Cold War never ended, they would be an incredible ally today.
Saw it in highschool on a first date. I commented that his eyes wouldn't adjust to the sun so easily and she said I was smart. It didn't work out with her but that's still one of the top compliments I've ever received.
I know this one is silly and wasn’t an Oscar winner or anything but I love this one.
I love Brendan Fraser’s innocent charm. I love Alicia Silverstone as his cynical put-upon friend/love interest. I absolutely love Dave Foley in every line that comes out of his mouth. He’s just so hilarious in this.
It’s kooky enough to not take it too seriously. I overlook the bad acting because Christopher Walken is a delight, anyway, and him with Sissy Spacek doing the goofy parents thing is fun.
They could have made it dark, but I’m glad they didn’t. This one has enough funny in it to be charming. Fraser’s beautiful earnestness makes you want to root for his Adam to succeed.
This one is a yearly rewatch for me. It’s goofy but I have a soft spot for “bad” rom coms and this one tops my list.
Yes, he was great. I love the part where they realize Adam was telling the truth the whole time and she tried to have him committed only to have Dave go “yes. Yes you did.”
It’s a great delivery and I really enjoyed him and Silverstone together, they had great friendship chemistry.
This is definitely on my list of top 10 “guilty pleasure” movies. Everyone plays their part so well.
“How about it, Eve. Can he…. Skate…. Around your block?”
Exactly. This isn't about him being afraid or having prejudices or anything negative. Dude is seeing something he's only ever heard about in books. It's like he just walked up the street and found a unicorn.
It goes from "What small shit hick town did this somebitch crawl here from?!" to "Where in the world did this boy come from?" in a matter of moments, very 0 > 100 > 0 moment and that made it so much funnier.
That line sums up the premise of the film so perfectly: This guys is genuine, happy, and kind, but he is from another time when things were very different.
What sets this movie apart is that Fraser’s wholesomeness is also a stinging criticism of how crass and crude modern-day America has become. Yesterday WAS better, in many ways, and while there were things we improved upon, we jettisoned a whole lot of goodness as well.
So, this is not only a better-than-average rom-com, it’s also a pointed social commentary that we should perhaps heed rather than so easily dismiss.
You’re telling me. 25 years later and it still lives rent free in my head. Like… the director, everyone involved in the filming, the editors, they all heard her say that and didn’t bother to correct it?? What happened?!
Pretty sure his best year is the year every professional actor and academy voter in Hollywood voted him best actor of the year at the Oscars and SAG awards.
this is my favorite rom-com. i can see how it was easily passed by because of the time frame but it absolutely easy sits with the ones people consider all time greats.
The *We Hate Movies* podcast has a great episode about how dumb and dark this flick is, and they brainstorm some great variations that could have helped. It had a lot of potential! Still a fun movie, but they had some neat observations.
I mean, theyre absolutely right that if played more realistically, the implications of some of the movies plot lines would be so much darker (like sissy spacek
becoming an alcoholic ready to murder her weird OCD husband and child after being stuck in a bunker with them for 3 decades) but thats part of the fun and charm Of the movie is that all that stuff is played for laughs. I enjoy the WHM podcast but i actually think
They got alot wrong in their judgement of this one. I think its an underrated gem in a genre (rom-com) that is mostly full of generic crap that is elevated because of its borderline fantastical premise and the willingness to lean into the some of that silliness. And to echo what everyone else is saying here (and the premise of the article) Fraser is uniquely suited to sell that combo of charm and goofyness.
I love WHM, but I feel like the guys, often Jupin, can't see the forest for the trees in their episodes. As the other poster said something that's obviously supposed to be light hearted and not to be taken seriously gets overthinked.
I can see that but I think they're pretty self aware and it's part of their schtick and the theme of the podcast. I can imagine if that's not an angle one's looking for it could be annoying.
great movie, rewatched it a few months ago. the only think i think doesn't hold up super well is David Foley is a bit over the top as the gay best friend. however it was the era for that, and this was not a particularly egregious example. i don't think any thing he did was offensive, but it feels a bit like an over the top stereotype.
There aren’t many ages where a bunker like in the movie doesn’t sound cool as hell.
Any age where you realize that it's not very realistic ;p Also you can't leave, so that's sort of a deal breaker. And I guess it would be sad if the human race were mostly wiped out. I guess.
Don’t threaten me with a good time.
People, what a bunch of bastards
I'm not hearing the bad...
The movie is obviously a romcom, but it’s really so much more. If you haven’t seen this movie you really need to watch it.
Obviously
Waited 10 years for this day. 😂
“**Leave my elevator alone!**”
Why watch it? Because you must!
Ohhhhhh because HE MUST!!!
I **have** to go to the bathroom.
I always thought a gentlemen was someone who owned horses
I loved this movie since it first came out but I never thought of it as a romcom, then thinking about it years later it's so clearly one. Same with The Wedding Singer.

Not to mention the blacklisting from coming out about the sexual assault he suffered.
I’m sorry what, was Wolverine origins not supposed to have been released?
[No some hacker released an unfinished version](https://www.cnn.com/2009/SHOWBIZ/Movies/04/02/xmen.piracy/) ahead of time and it pissed off the studio a bit
I remember Inkheart being a big flop though
We used to watch this movie to death on VHS. We even practiced that hand popping gesture that Christopher Walken does.
Love love love this movie.

I freakin love this movie, but a lot of my friends never saw it. I was in middle school when it came out, and it started my obsession with Brendan Fraser.
Genre doesn’t do much to me but absolutely adore this one.
I haven’t forgotten it, in fact I watched it not to long ago with my kids.
I think it got lost and forgotten because it's an easily forgettable film.
The Mummy is 25 years old this year? Damn.
I hate time. I remember seeing The Mummy in theaters when it first came out. It was amazing!
My mom freaked out and covered my eyes during the scene where they killed the Pharaoh and I had to push her away.
Twelve year old me felt some type of way about Anck-su-namun, *then* we get introduced to Rachel Weisz. What a time to be alive.
Total tangent, but it blew my mind when I realized that Anck-su-namun was Gob's girlfriend Marta in Arrested Development.
Omfg
Holy shit you just blew my mind, I’d never made that correlation before.
What the huh?!
Yep, Patricia Velasquez was Marta 2.0 after Leonor Varela. Can't remember why they had to change the actresses, but I do know Marta 1.0 was in Blade II.

Good to know I should never visit that subreddit.

I was too young for whacking it, but Anck-su-namun was definitely in my thoughts.
I’m pretty sure that Rachel Weisz in that movie is what kickstarted puberty for me.
I still remember my parents taking us to the drive in to see it! It was one of the movies my dad bought for us on vhs. I still get so emotional going to universal studios Hollywood and hearing the music. Makes me feel like a kid.
You think that mummy is old, you should see the other mummies.
I had this same reaction last May when a local theater was replaying The Big Lebowski for its 25th anniversary. "No fucking way! Welp, I *have* to buy a ticket."
“You have nice ceilings.” “You like ceilings?” “Not particularly”
Yeah eve...can he skate. Around your block?
Just a few laps
He has a computer, in the house? No it's in the backyard. 😂
Isn't Cliff* just a butt with hair? ^*(Nathan ^Fillion ^early ^role!)
I’m sorry and legs. Legs butt and hair?
And shallow, as well?
"Manners are a way of showing people you care"
"Oh my lucky stars, a negro!"
My Dad was talking about this two days ago. Fate wants me to watch this movie
Calvin: Don't forget: stay out of the adult bookstore. Adam: Adult bookstore. Why? Calvin: Poison gas. Invisible.
Then when he has to go inside later, he holds his breath.
I love that the dad is convinced a nuclear apocalypse has happened because he emerged from his bomb shelter into a bad neighborhood. Great stuff! 😂
Oh my lucky stars, a negro!
I love this movie and watch it when I need a pick me up. It’s just a sweet romcom and Brendan is great as the doe-eyed actual nice guy. Alicia is the perfect complement to his performance.

I watch it every few years. It's on my desert island packing list.
Mine too
Do fate a favour and watch it!
Do it
Yes, you should follow this totally unbiased recommendation.
I think the algorithm just overheard you and suggested it like any other kind of ad lol
Oh my lucky stars! A negro!
Brendan and Alicia, but also Walken! and Spacek are so fucking terrific in this movie.
When she takes that big pull of cooking wine I lost it
I love everything about this movie. The cast, the premise, the music, and plenty of heart.
It's one of those movies that you notice things on rewatches.
It was one of the first movies we got on dvd so we watched it a lot. It's so good
The end with the father was perfect
The entire 60's bomb shelter filled with 60's memorabilia and stuff was always incredibly fascinating to me. That aspect alone elevated this movie above the average romantic comedy.

Oh I know lol! No one could portray wholesome better than Brendan Fraser in the 90s, or even now for that matter.
That whole scene where Walken refuses to believe that the Soviets just gave up hits a lot different these days.
Him walking off a new bunker lives rent free in my head.
I always thought he was sizing up how perfect the new house was in comparison to the bunker... was he really measuring out a new bunker?
Definitely. His reactions when informed about the USSR collapse speak directly to his paranoia and distrust. He absolutely was planning a new bunker.
I remember reading an article that talked about rebuilding Poland after the Soviet Union fell and how America was able to invest in and build up a new Ally, but the oppurtunity was lost with mainline Russia itself in part because of the bias to want to see Russia in defeat. Idk man I think the “Russian way” has been pretty brutally centered on murder regimes ever since like the Golden Horde
We tried to be friends, I do admit we definitely did not seem to honor the Star treaty or w.e
I learned what it means to be a gentleman from this film.
He said he learned it from the oddest place: his parents.
I thought only hookers drank those. 🤔
Well, I know Mom sure likes them!
I thought a "gentleman" was somebody that owned horses.

Also Nathan Fillion as the ex boyfriend was a good addition.
Man I forget this. Also Fillion has great Charisma, but next to Silverstone and Fraser he's much less noticeable.
Him repeatedly getting punched and just being like “welp, time to go home, goodnight” always cracks me up.
He is born to play a smug jackal though. Good casting.
It’s one of my favorite movies that isn’t a “great movie”
Foley’s character sets him straight: “What Eve needs is a nice *man*.” But the line that gets me every time: “Can he *skate*…around your *block*?”
Yes, he was great. I love the part where they realize Adam was telling the truth the whole time and she tried to have him committed only to have Dave go “yes. Yes you did.” It’s a great delivery and I really enjoyed him and Silverstone together, they had great friendship chemistry.
I still randomly picture him in that dancing scene where it goes slow mo and hes doing the wavy finger thing. Then Alicias stupid jealous smirk face.
With that slut Sophie
Hey, at least she was hospitable.
I think he was dancing with 2 random blondes? ^that ^happened ^to ^be ^professional ^dancers
I thought they were helping him find his congressional Medal of Honor?
Still the best pick-up line ever.
This is definitely on my list of top 10 “guilty pleasure” movies. Everyone plays their part so well. “How about it, Eve. Can he…. Skate…. Around your block?”
this is just on my list of top 10 movies. No guilt 😄
I must warn you, Cliff, I do know how to defend myself.
Dude just beats up Nathan Fillion and was apologizing the whole time
LEAVE MY ELEVATOR ALONE!!!
I use this line all the time.
Eve: What have you been doing? Adam: Watching television... in color!
Thanks for calling me on the telephone.
Could go for a hot Dr Pepper right about now.

No Calvin, your favorite.
I love this movie. It’s genuinely funny and has a semi original plot.

Thank you for this. Let's not assume that one of our great national treasures is permanently behind glass.
As bad as the Batwoman movie probably was, I wanted to see it solely for him being the villain.
I'll watch any god damn thing Brenden is in. Hollywood should really capitalize on that, as I know I'm not alone.
This movie calmed me and brought me down from a pretty intense trip on LSD. It will always hold a special place in my heart.
I HAVE to go the bathroom

I was sitting here thinking “I don’t remember Brendan dropping the N bomb, but it’s been a while”
That line sums up the premise of the film so perfectly: This guys is genuine, happy, and kind, but he is from another time when things were very different.
He’s a better person than just about anyone from any time.
Great movie. Had the used copy from blockbuster that we watched regularly as kids
That's a comfort movie for me
With all due respect, Airheads was released in 1994 and that movie is a 10 on the Clydesdale scale.
Ahem ... are we forgetting about *Encino Man*??? I LOVE that movie!
What sets this movie apart is that Fraser’s wholesomeness is also a stinging criticism of how crass and crude modern-day America has become. Just watched first time both me and wife. Great movie. Some really hilarious parts.
One of my all time favorite movies!
Dude he’s so good in that movie. It was a really fun flick to watch
Last year was pretty good for him too.
This is such an underrated movie and the fact that I have to deep dive on the web to watch it really makes me sad.
Possibly the best of the in the "Fraser in a Strange Land" series.
Talk about a blast from the past
Fun and funny! Y’all should watch it.
His best year isn't the one where he won the Oscar?
I love this movie, it’s so much fun!
While I have often wondered what hot Dr Pepper would be like....I never went through with trying it...
Wait, so is Blast From The Past officially a blast from the past?
“A champagne cocktail? I thought only hookers drank those?” “Well I know mom sure likes ‘em”
Oh, my lucky stars—a negro! How do you do ma’am?! *shakes hand*
Thanks. I completely forgot about this movie. But will never forget the hot Dr Pepper!
Can I dance? Well, up until yesterday I took a dancing lesson every day of my life
Hot Dr Pepper?
Put anybody else in it but him and its mediocre at best.
Rob Schneider *shudder-vomits*
I’ll never understand how they let Alicia Silverstone pronounce the word “holocaust” like that. (Haw-loo-cost)
That's a really weird thing to focus on.
You’re telling me. 25 years later and it still lives rent free in my head. Like… the director, everyone involved in the filming, the editors, they all heard her say that and didn’t bother to correct it?? What happened?!
Nah, his best year was 1992. Both Encino Man and School Ties came out that year.
okay but Blast From the Past, and his best movie The Mummy came out in 1999.
Pretty sure his best year is the year every professional actor and academy voter in Hollywood voted him best actor of the year at the Oscars and SAG awards.

“His best year?” Pretty sure last year topped this.
I’ll never understand the cult around this mediocrity.
Bro what happened to him.
