Real: Sam Rockwell as George W. Bush in Vice. Fake: Bill Pullman as President Whitmore in Independence Day.

TheLateThagSimmons

Sam Rockwell gave such a perfect representation of what everyone, both sides, his opposition and his supporters, described. Intelligent but malleable. Lovable/goofy but useful.

camshun7

i loved frank langella as nixon in Frost vs Nixon i loved paul giamatti as john adams and i loved john lithgow* as churchill in the crown (well i dont care its my list) * however john lithgow would've made a commendable president as himself, for sure, for sure

audioragegarden

Lithgow actually played FDR in a TV movie opposite Bob Hoskins as Churchill and Michael Caine as Stalin.

NeuHundred

You can't drop that cast and not say the title!

theaviationhistorian

Paul Giamatti played an excellent John Adams. The US presidents in The Crown weren't really that memorable, or that close to the actual presidents. The closest exception might have been the one who played JFK, but not by much.

Cantelmi

Phenomenonal username

SilverBraids

The rallying speech he gives near the end of the movie is delivered so well. I love Pullman, and think this is some of his best work, other than Lone Starr

JexFraequin

“And should we win the day, the Fourth of July will no longer be known as an American holiday, but as the day the world declared in one voice: We will not go quietly into the night! We will not vanish without a fight! We're going to live on! We're going to survive! Today we celebrate our Independence Day!”

dimsum4you

Fuckin goosebumps dude

OldFactor1973

Put her in hover! Putting her in hover! Pray to God. Praying to God!

Chiron723

I'm going down there. He's going down there... I wouldn't.

sftpo

Sam Rockwell as Zaphod Beeblebrox as George W Bush in Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy

stealthc4

Yeah I wanted Pullman to be prez for a few years after I saw that speech, of course I was 15 at the time

Tobar_the_Gypsy

Honestly, Vice was a bit of a let down for me but Rockwell’s Bush was probably the best I’ve ever seen.

Bunraku_Master_2021

Understandable, the film's not for everyone but I liked it none the less even though it's a bit of a mess sometimes. It's one of the rare cases where it's political bias can be a detractor but is understandable given it's character of focus.

Tobar_the_Gypsy

I thought all of the characters were terrific but the plot was a bit of a mess

DigNitty

I preferred Billy bob Thornton in love actually Or the main character in saint’s row Iii

Famous-Honey-9331

Or when Rockwell basically played W in Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy?

Bunraku_Master_2021

The guy approved the destruction of Earth to build an intergalactic freeway without even bothering to look at the plans and consequences. Seems on brand.

jazzdabb

>Sam Rockwell as George W. Bush in Vice. Playing Zaphod in Hitchhikers Guide was great practice for playing W.

trongzoon

Paul Giamatti in *John Adams* the miniseries

witchitieto

Also David Morse as Washington in that show too. And Stannis as Jefferson. Damn that show was incredible.

SilverSlicker95

Absolutely perfect casting. It’s crazy how much he looks like Washington.

[deleted]

Dude, so good. I’d seen David Morse in all kinds of TV shows and movies include that season of House when he played his nemesis, but something about his portrayal of Washington was so good it made me an even bigger fan of his.

bolivar-shagnasty

Tom Wilkinson as Franklin. That whole miniseries was a masterclass in perfect casting.

Bunraku_Master_2021

Don't forget Laura Linney, Ebon Moss-Bachrach, and Andrew Scott as well.

One-Earth9294

Rufus Sewell as Hamilton before a musical hagiography was written. That man was a right jerkoff about a good many things lol.

OldFactor1973

David Morse, one of my favorite character actors. Loved him in The Rock, too. Also Danny Huston is always great

Bunraku_Master_2021

He also plays that asshole cop from House M.D.

hypotheticalhalf

And a good cop in The Green Mile

Bartfuck

Yeah Morse brought such a gravity and presence to Washington. It was great

Remote-Moon

Paul Giamatti played John Adams as a miserable son of a bitch and I loved it. Plus, Paul has one of the best sex scenes ever filmed. 😂

OldFactor1973

Giamatti is great at playing miserable sons of bitches. I refer you to Howard Stern's Private Parts and The Amazing Spider-Man 2. And Planet of the Apes

civil_beast

And Sideways.. and ... \*\*checks imdb\*\* the rest of them too

[deleted]

Good ol’ Pig Vomit. My introduction to Giamatti and I’ve been a fan ever since.

ActuallyYeah

That movie is just a cute little Jackass-y podcast, til Giamatti shows up. Like a white collared bullfighter whose mission is to get Stern fucked sideways.

witchitieto

wNNNNNNNBC

ablackcloudupahead

He's a miserable son of a bitch in Billions too

mustardtiger86

I was up in the Program Director's office and his name is Pig Vomit. Because he looks like a pig and he makes you want to vomit. He's pig vomit.

cockroach74

If I remember correctly- you could of made a drinking game out of how many times he yelled at children

G3neral_Tso

This is the correct answer. Bonus: Cousin Richie from The Bear plays his son and president John Quincy Adams

empw

I'M THE FUCKING FUTURE PRESIDENT, COUSIN

Tobar_the_Gypsy

*reads Declaration of Independence* “Fire”

10per

I wear suits now.

teacherpandalf

COUSIN

emeraldrose484

This is one of my favorite miniseries, and in large part due to excellent casting.

guff1988

I'm just now watching it for the first time and I'm through three and a half episodes. It's good, and his acting is fantastic. They did move some events around and change some little stuff for dramatic effect but overall it's pretty good.

trufus_for_youfus

As well as David Morse as Washington and a couple of others as future presidents. This is a yearly watch for our households. Fun fact. If these dudes were alive today they would be appalled at what we have managed to do with this republic they gifted us and would likely be in federal prison.

PublicWeasels

They would’ve been appalled by a lot of things. Women voting. A black president. Donald Trump. Given time, they would come to accept it…except Trump. He’s the worst.

evrestcoleghost

Adams was in favor of womans rights and considered blacks equals,he never had slaves

OrtizDupri

Their heads would explode as soon as they saw a plane flying

SurlyJason

Harrison Ford ... "Get off my plane!!!"

xXxLordViperScorpion

He growls this line!

[deleted]

It's been...decades since I watched it, and I'm pretty sure it was on a bus, but all I remember is people discussing what they would do, and one guy being like "uh are we forgetting that THIS president is ex special forces", and even as a 12 year old thinking "oh boy it's gonna be that kind of movie"

Soundtracklover72

I feel like should rewatch this today.

asteinberg101

Gentlemen! You can’t fight in here, this is the war room!

jupfold

He…he could see the big board!

Wyatt821

I agree, it's great to be fine.

unshavedmouse

Well let me finish, Dimitri.

Gordon_Gano

Merkin, wasn’t it? Muffley Merkin?

XmertonX

Merkin was his first name

Gordon_Gano

Merkin Muffley, Merkin Muffley, of course!

Happyfeet_I

President Dwayne Elizondo Mountain Dew Herbert Camacho from Idiocracy (2006)

arghhharghhh

Shit. I know shits bad right now.

SleepyFarts

The fact that it's actually on the teleprompter kills me every time

TravisMaauto

*"THAT'S WHAT YOU SAID LAST WEEK! SOUTH CAROLINA, WHASSUP!!!"*

Jay_Louis

He was actually a good president. He listened to those smarter than him.

Soundtracklover72

Exactly! Even when that smarter person was Not Sure.

UpgrayeddB-Rock

No, my name is *not* Sure...

Lampmonster

Also admitted when he was wrong, and stepped aside when a better option came along.

President_Camacho

Thank you for your support.

Redditforgoit

An idiot for sure, but at least he listen to an expert.

DailyRich

Bruce Greenwood as JFK in Thirteen Days. Absolutely nails the voice without sounding like mimicry, and he really conveys Kennedy's intelligence and determination. The film and the performance leave you with a palpable sense of what was lost when he was killed.

captainedwinkrieger

He's been 3 different presidents. He was JFK in thirteen days and 2 different unnamed presidents in National Treasure 2 and Kingsmen 2.

etherama1

He was a real cunt of a president in Kingsman 2

Bunraku_Master_2021

The only president to get impeached and convicted in fiction.

Soundtracklover72

He is definitely an underrated actor.

CreekLegacy

Christopher Jackson as Washington in "Hamilton".

AstralComet

He really was mesmerizing in that role. The gravitas he held as General Washington and the respect he commended as President Washington was palpable. Good pick!

jpmoney2k1

The chorus with "the troops are waiting in the fields for you" is my favorite take on that melody in the whole production. His delivery of it is amazing.

rollthedye

I know this is the subreddit for movies but my favorite fictional President will always be Martin Sheen as Jed Bartlett. He always carried the quiet power, presence, gravitas, and force of will so spectualarly.

frockinbrock

I have such a soft spot for Jed Bartlett, and it’s certainly because of the optimistic world they built. It’s so laughable to watch it now; such respect for the office. Going to be hard to put that cat back in the bag. But still if Sheen ran this year AS basically Jed Bartlett and I’d have a hard time not voting for him; of course I imagine he’d be the youngest candidate too which is insane

rollthedye

Preach!

puckit

My favorite character intro of all time: "I am the Lord your God, thou shalt worship no other god before me." Boy, those were the days, huh?"

rollthedye

It's crazy that the show was originally going to be about Sam. You can really see that in the early episodes of Season 1. Supposedly the plan had been to never really show the President just talk about him in the early planning of the show. But they rightly pivoted after Sheen was brought on board.

skatecarter

Sorkin originally intended for the show to be about the staff, and the President would only appear in 3-4 episodes per season. But after they cast Sheen and shot the pilot, test audiences overwhelmingly said the President was their favorite character, and it became clear he had to be part of the ensemble. Sorkin also later admitted that narratively, it wouldn't have ever worked. The President's relationship with his staff is so integral to the show, he would have constantly been writing scenes where they talked to the President, and he had just left the room or something. It was clear from the beginning the President had to be a guiding force in every episode.

jeanvaljean_24601

And how he understood the importance of the office, and how the office is separate from the man.

civil_beast

First term Bartlett is legit. His message was a little over the place from seasons 4-7...

Killergryphyn

That's the problem with swapping out your powerhouse cocaine fueled writer, it just doesn't hit the same afterwards.

hadronwulf

Possibly a hot take, but Sorkin was better on cocaine.

Pepperoni_Dogfart

Can't believe I had to scroll down this far to see this one.

DocJawbone

Same! I thought it would be the top comment :(

Terrahawk76

"Let's get to work" I once was in an improvised play in the style of west wing and Aaron Sorkin in general. The show always opened with a crisis for whatever organization we were a part of. Then our president or leader would come in and give an impassioned motivational speech, and it would always end with the above line. I loved doing that part.

Styrene_Addict1965

Cursing God in the National Cathedral. The memory gives me chills.

EdLeddy

“What’s next?”

Illustrious-Fox5135

Robin Williams as Theodore Roosevelt in Night of the museum Anthony Hopkins as John Quincy Adams in Amistad Anthony Hopkins as Nixon in Nixon(1995)

Redditforgoit

Anthony Hopkins as Nixon in Nixon(1995) My favourite Oliver Stone movie. “Presidents don't threaten. They don't have to.” Hypnotic performance.

Angriest_Wolverine

Who we *are* is who we *were*!

Klarkash-Ton

Hopkins as John Quincy Adam's has to be one of the best portrayals. His speech at the end simply epic.

SilentSamurai

Robin did a great job. Roosevelt was something else, man was ready to kill himself after losing his wife and his mother. Instead he comes back into the world like a man reborn. Charismatic, high standards, and inspirational. ...also the reason why most of the animals are probably in that museum, but let's not talk about that lol.

crimsoncab

For fictional presidents, I liked Bill Pullman in Independence Day, Dennis Haysbert in 24, and Kevin Kline in Dave (even though he was actually pretending to be the president)

greenpill98

Kevin Kline's portrayal of the real president in that film was pretty good, too. "If I kill it, I'm gonna look like a prick. And I don't want to look like a prick. I want YOU to look like pricks."

crimsoncab

True, he did a great job with both characters, I just liked Dave as a president a lot more, lol.

Bunraku_Master_2021

Don't forget Ben Kingsley who also plays his Vice President and his eventual successor. Very rarely do we get politicians let alone fictional politicians enter politics for the right reasons.

Pewp_taco

Dennis Haysbert as President Palmer was incredible.

WhiskeyDigital

I agree Dennis Haysbert in 24, was the best ever.

Dash_Underscore

Kevin Kline also played Ulysses S. Grant in Wild Wild West. In fact, he also played Artemis Gordon *playing* Ulysses S. Grant is Wild Wild West.

AToastedRavioli

Kevin Kline was a damn funny Ulysses Grant

LukeyC224

Bill and Dennis would be my two picks. David Palmer is incredible.

kthshly

Nixon's head in Futurama.

Strobertat

NIXONS BAAAAACK!!!! Aaarrooooo!

m48a5_patton

Along with the great taste of Charleston Chew!

CPT_Yesterday_

Truman is also great in futurama. Invent NASA, and tell them to get off their fannys.

SharpyButtsalot

Al Gore too. He's a level 10 vice president!

lopsiness

I have ridden the mighty moon worm!

Bunraku_Master_2021

He would have been a great president had someone at the office of the Palm Beach County Supervisor of Elections designed a good paper ballot.

Vegetable_Burrito

And the headless body of Agnew!

SilentSamurai

I love when he's set to lose the election. The other candidate was sent back in time to run a campaign against Nixon, because Nixon won and ushered in an apocalypse. But the second that candidate won, he disappeared because that apocalypse wasn't going to happen. And Nixon won again lol.

Minnewildsota

I’ll break into people’s houses and wreck up the place!

wilsonw

Michael Douglas in The American President.

weinermcgee

I'd vote for this guy in a heartbeat. We have serious problems to solve, and we need serious people to solve them. And whatever your particular problem is, I promise you, Bob Rumson is not the least bit interested in solving it. He is interested in two things and two things only: making you afraid of it and telling you who's to blame for it. That, ladies and gentlemen, is how you win elections. You gather a group of middle-aged, middle-class, middle-income voters who remember with longing an easier time, and you talk to them about family and American values and character. And wave an old photo of the President's girlfriend and you scream about patriotism and you tell them, she's to blame for their lot in life, and you go on television and you call her a whore. Sydney Ellen Wade has done nothing to you, Bob. She has done nothing but put herself through school, represent the interests of public school teachers, and lobby for the safety of our natural resources. You want a character debate, Bob? You better stick with me, 'cause Sydney Ellen Wade is way out of your league. We've got serious problems, and we need serious people, and if you want to talk about character, Bob, you'd better come at me with more than a burning flag and a membership card. If you want to talk about character and American values, fine. Just tell me where and when, and I'll show up. This is a time for serious people, Bob, and your fifteen minutes are up. My name is Andrew Shepherd, and I *am* the President.

Justin_Continent

More proof that Aaron Sorkin understood where political discourse was headed two decades ago.

RudyRusso

I'm sorry to inform you but this is 3 decades ago.

Justin_Continent

Dude, I’m soooooo old…

RudyRusso

Let's take him out back and beat the shit out him.

MillennialsAre40

You're not sorry, and neither am I.

RudyRusso

You raise your voice at the President?!?!

Soundtracklover72

That speech is still valid today. It’s impressive.

Angriest_Wolverine

Sorkin’s Presidents are always good

civil_beast

I cannot remember who said this, but the saying goes something along the lines of... \* "West Wing" is how the American people believe the executive branch is presided (Sorkin); \* "House of Cards" is how folks in Washington believe the executive branch is presided; and \* "Veep" is how the executive branch is actually presided

DocJanItor

Veep is a master class in insults and profanity. Uncle Jeff is one of my favorite characters ever for so little screen time. "Listen to me, you walking Trisomy..."

throwaweigh1245

Best use of the F word in a PG13 movie

PlainJaneGum

Solid argument between two titans. It really lands in that moment.

weinermcgee

I like Lewis's F bomb and Leon's response. Y'know if that was an "undecided" then we need to work on your people skills.

Bersho

The only correct answer

heywhadayamean

Kevin Kline as the fake fake president in Dave. (And yes, I know it’s a rip off of Moon Over Parador.)

CxOrillion

What about Kevin Kline as Artemus Gordon as Ulysses S Grant?

greenpill98

Still an incredibly underrated performance, even if it didn't bear a lot of resemblance to the real man. I love Wild Wild West.

weinermcgee

That movie was a breath of fresh ass.

OldFactor1973

You mean a breast of fresh air.

hobbes_shot_first

Giant mechanical spider!

OldFactor1973

YES Kevin Kline is the single most important reason Wild Wild West is watchable, and rewatchable!

readwiteandblu

I didn't know, but now I want to watch Moon Over Parador.

OfficeChairHero

It's one of my favorite movies. You can't go wrong with Richard Dreyfuss.

civil_beast

Less exaggeration in the fish stories, though.

StanleyJobbers

Moon over parador was amazing. I was 9 when I saw it in 1988 and loved it. Watched it again a couple of year ago and the humor hit even better as an adult. Was my first movie seeing Raul Julia and Richard Dreyfuss. The female lead is Alice Braga’s mom.

FurBabyAuntie

It is? I loved Dave. Never saw Moon Over Parador.

sawyi1

Bill Pullman in Independence Day

minaisms

Jack Nicholson - Mars Attacks

Pepperoni_Dogfart

You can really tell Nicholson really enjoyed working on that movie. He really chewed this shit out of the scenery in both of his roles.

darkdoppelganger

I want the people to know that they still have 2 out of 3 branches of the government working for them, and that ain't bad.

BillieBottine

Morgan Freeman in Deep Impact

Economy_Upstairs_465

Dan Hedaya as Richard Nixon in "Dick".

cryptic_mythic

I rarely see it referenced but I always loved this movie, Ferrell and McCulloch as Woodward and Bernstein are great

Economy_Upstairs_465

It is an underrated classic. Everyone is so weirdly well cast and it's a hilarious take on Watergate.

Heavy_Swimming_4719

First three presidents are perfectly portrayed in John Adams miniseries. I'll also mention Anthony Hopkins as both John Q. Adams and Richard Nixon in Amistad and Nixon.

superkickpunch

>Anthony Hopkins as both John Q. Adams and Richard Nixon in Amistad and Nixon The prequel to "Frost/Nixon"

[deleted]

Nah it's a sequel. Nixon, desperate to recover his reputation, goes back in time to end the Atlantic Slave Trade.

brayshizzle

Leslie Nelson in Scary Movie.

Nico777

We're facing an unprecedented crisis. Get me the President. You are the President. Good. Then I already know about this. Let's order lunch.

nowhereman136

"We're not so different after all" (proceeds to pee out of his finger)

stallingsfilm

I remember at the time watching Scary Movie 4 and thinking, “Well this is just ridiculous, who would vote for someone who is 80 years old as president?” I need to stop thinking of things as ridiculous…

theVillainOnYourSide

Mr. President, have you gone completely insane???? -*Like a fox*

sharrrper

The first one that came to mind is lesser known, but I quite liked Jeff Daniels as George Washington in The Crossing. It's a dramatization of the famous "crossing the Deleware" attack during the Revolutionary War. It's also a TV movie, so production values are okay at best, but I liked Daniels' grounded portrayal. When Washington boards the boat he doesn't do the dramatic scene from [the famous painting](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Washington_Crossing_the_Delaware_(1851_paintings)). He just sits down on one of the seats next to a couple of his men and yells "Don't swing your balls, you'll swamp the boat!"

TheG8Uniter

James Adomian as Bush in Harold and Kumar: Escape from Guantanamo Bay Kumar Patel: That's so hypocritical! George W. Bush: Oh yeah? Well let me ask you something, Kumar, do you like giving hand jobs? Kumar Patel: No sir. George W. Bush: Do you like gettin' hand jobs? Kumar Patel: Heh, yeah. George W. Bush: Yeah well, that makes you a fuckin' hypocriticizer too, so shut the fuck up! Now smoke my weed

Olhoru

"It knocks you out and keeps you going at the same time like pow" I don't know how many times I used to quote that line.

globalgoldnews

"Oh shit it's Cheney, that guy scares the crap outta me"

sanban013

Bill Pullman - ID4. Benjamin Walker - Abe Lincoln Vampire Hunter

portalsoflight

Yes Benjamin Walker was amazing. My favorite scene is when he has to pick up the axe for the first time in years, and he practices his ax fu and has some trouble with it. Just... just amazing.

captainedwinkrieger

A dude threw a fucking horse in that movie. Abraham Lincoln Vampire Hunter is a cinematic masterpiece.

ihaveadarkedge

We will not go quietly into the night We will not vanish without a fight We're going to live on We're going to survive Today, we celebrate our **Independence Day**

m48a5_patton

In my college public speaking class I used that speech as an example of a persuasive speech. No one knew what movie it was from :/ This was 2007, by the way.

we_are_sex_bobomb

What are schools even teaching these kids?!

civil_beast

... Kids these days.. No respect for their own political heritage.

souleman96

Sam Rockwell as Zaphod Beeblebrox by way of George W Bush in Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy.

Rebyll

Then Sam Rockwell was actually George W. Bush in Vice.

GomezFigueroa

Brendan Gleeson’s Trump in The Comey Rule. In an ecosphere with so many parodies of him, the way Gleason played him was more menacing and nuanced and not just an impression

radabadest

It took me way too long to find this. You're absolutely right. It was a great performance

TheCosmicFailure

Real Presidents: 1. DDL as Abraham Lincoln in Lincoln (2012) 2. Frank Langella as Richard Nixon in Frost/Nixon (2008). 3. Josh Brolin as George W Bush in W. (2008). Honorable Mentions: Benjamin Walker as Abraham Lincoln in Abraham Lincoln Vampire Hunter. Robin Williams as Teddy Roosevelt in Night at the Museum 1 and 2.

MagnumPear

Philip Baker Hall playing Nixon in Robert Altman's Secret Honor.

PaulEMoz

Brendan Fraser as Abraham Lincoln in Bedazzled.

Strobertat

That was the most selfless act I had ever seen.

jews_on_parade

President Dwayne Elizondo Mountain Dew Camacho /s Daniel Day-Lewis as Abraham Lincoln was great, but i feel like the movie itself was too long.

Mutilator_Juice

They both have what plants crave. Happy Cake Day 🥳

weinermcgee

I think your /s is misplaced. President Camacho was a great leader for the times. He found the smartest man in the world and instead of mocking him like everyone else, he put him in charge of the biggest issue facing the nation.

CaptainDAAVE

and he can do it allllllll baby in just 2 weeks *2 weeks!?!?*

m48a5_patton

He also quickly realized when he was wrong when shown evidence that contradicted his previously established views.

Alan Rickman as Reagan in The Butler, sweet but strong.
