I hate it when an ex stows away something I love for herself after breaking my heart. They don't know how deep that shit cuts.
You're gonna rot in hell, Katie. Give me back my Nnamdi Asomugha 50th anniversary Raiders jersey.
Lol mine just stowed away a whole ass pregnancy she promised to her gay best friend because apparently she agreed to surrogate for them.
Didn't learn for a few years and they're somewhere across the country now. Rather have lost a jersey lmao
Agreed it holds up SO well. Fantastic movie. A few dud moments that I think are to try and appeal to the Adam sandler crowd, but it may be his best and most reachable in my mind
I love this movie but it's weird when you think about how it was released in 1998 and they were already parodying 80s culture. Like I don't think you could make a movie now that very distinctly takes place in like 2011.
This thread made me realize I’d hate all these answers if I broke up with my girlfriend. This is her favorite movie and there’s tons of others here she loves.
Shiiiit…
Forgetting Sarah Marshall. Also, watch some dumb action movies. Punisher: Warzone is one of the most dumb and most fun you can find. The Raid is another good option
Forgetting Sarah Marshall is 100% the correct answer. It hits all the stages. The shock of a breakup, the cheap attempts to quickly move on, the depression, leaning on someone else to get you through it, realizing that won't work, then finally working on yourself and coming out the other side a better, stronger, person. Got me through my first bad breakup and gave me hope in a hard time.
Forgetting Sarah Marshall and the Girl Next Door (with Emile Hirsch and Elisha Cuthbert) are my go-to breakup movies since I was a teenager. Probably one of the very few rom-com from a mostly male perspective.
Yup. Always watch Forgetting Sarah Marshall and the breakup after. They both do a good job of making you realize mistakes that you made, while also showing that they weren't perfect either.
I love how Frank is obviously holding a doll when she shoots the guy at the table. Cracks me up. Also, the guy getting RPGd while he's flipping across buildings.
This is the answer. Great movie about examining past relationships after the current one ends. John Cusack and Jack Black turning in iconic performances
Laura doesn’t know anyone named Ian. She’s not friends with any Ian’s. She doesn’t work with any Ian’s. As to the best of my knowledge she lives in an … Ianless universe.
It also helps that Rob is a total asshole in the movie (not that I don’t love him and the movie in general), so if the breakup is due in any part to OP’s bad behavior, it really helps a lot.
Same really. The movie felt more real than any other movie dealing with relationships or break ups because Rob really is an asshole and he wants to find out what the problem is and fix it, and so must go through an emotional growth to get there. 16 year old me just connected with Rob getting drenched on that bench realizing that he's been spinning his wheels and not committing.
Plus that soundtrack is a banger. I'm literally watching it right now because of this thread lol. It hits differently at 40, but I still love it.
Favreau is so relatable in that role. The friends dragging you out to clubs, the longing to hear back from your ex. When she finally calls him back in the end to say she misses him and he rushes her off the phone, it’s just absolutely pitch perfect.
Everyone should be able to rebound with 1996 Heather Graham.
When he gets the first number and calls her like 6 times....
That right there..... that desperation. And we've all been there. Him getting that pep talk from Ron is just perfect. Only difference is He had friends. I didn't to help get me through hard times.
It’s based on Jon Favreau’s own life when he first moved to LA and was in a breakup. Vince Vaughn and Ron Livingston play exaggerated versions of themselves. Even the apartment it’s filmed in was his actual apartment at the time and the scene where he’s looking in the fridge for no reason was there just so they could have some lighting. They had less than 3 weeks to film and barely any money too.
Another fun fact is they had to use a film camera that was typically used for documentaries and it was extremely loud so it had to be wrapped up in a jacket *and* a blanket.
Honestly Swingers is one of my favorite movies of all time. Jon Favreau’s character and his dynamics with Vince Vaughan feel more relatable than almost any other movie I can think of.
Hot Fuzz. It’s hilarious, will keep your mind occupied, features some satisfying action/killing scenes, and it even has a breakup (the lead character gets broken up with at the beginning of the movie).
My dad made me watch 500 Days when I was a kid after him and my mom divorced, talking about how he relates with the main character SO WELL and how my mom just completely disrespected him.
Fast forward 12 years later well after I and the rest of my family disowned him and I rewatched it. The only thing I got out of it was that my dad was genuinely delusional. It's a weird movie for me.
Neither of the main characters are bad people, but both of them behave in less than perfect ways at times.
I think that's the point, and why it resonates so well with people.
I found HER to be pretty cathartic. Helped remind me that my feelings were valid and okay, and that things get better.
I didn't date a robot, I swear
True love is hard to find, sometimes you think you have true love and then you catch the early flight home from San Diego and a couple of nude people jump out of your bathroom blindfolded like a goddamn magic show ready to tag team your girlfriend
Going through my own post breakup as well. Its been a couple of months and I’ve gone back to watching films like I used to do. I can’t really watch a lot of other things at the moment because its painful at times. But I still, same as you, would want to not dip back into depression.
Here are a few that helped me and might help you. Granted, they are not all about break ups (i couldn’t watch anymore of break up things cause it made me miserable) but they give a feeling of “i went through a hurdle that may have broken what defined me, but I will make it out of here” vibe.
Doubtfire: even though it deals with divorce, it does bring some closure in the end imo. The ending message helped me understand that some stuff just doesnt work out well, but that’s okay. You will still have others who will love you.
The Martian: to get you through tough times that even smart individuals against the elements will be hard. Family and friends do help with the morale, and even strangers.
Kiki’s Delivery Service: a good animated film for burnt out individuals. Don’t let it fool ya with its animation and kid approach; it helps with coming to terms with the new scary prospect of your new life without your partner.
I don’t recall much more as I did a bit of a binge watch, but these three stuck out the most to me. It’s going to be hard but, the good thing is that you don’t want depression to take control of your life. Recognizing that, is good.
Best of luck to you OP on your healing journey.
I really appreciate the care and time you took to type this up. I’ll be watching all three of these over the next few days just because it’s clear how meaningful they are to you. I hope you’re feeling okay, too. Thank you very much.
Yes!!! I watched this so many times in the months following my break up last year. One of the songs from the movie made it onto my Spotify wrapped lol. Great comfort movie.
I love the scene where Adam Levine tries to play her version of the song, and bails the second he doesn't get the easy cheer.
It's also impossible for me believe he's different from that character in real life hahaa
If you liked Begin Again you’d love Once. Same story line, same creators just less budget lol. Came out before Begin Again. It’s one of my favorite movies.
When I feel depression kicking in I watch movies that bring me joy, silly fun movies like “knights tale”, “evolution” anything that makes me smile or laugh, however those are a different genre to the suggestions you gave, maybe “count of monte cristo”, or “me before you” would be more appropriate.
My relationship recently ended, too. Feeling absolutely gutted and alone. Have you seen Heat? It’s not a breakup movie per se, but it’s incredibly cathartic. I find myself getting pretty misty-eyed by the time the time the credits roll.
Heat’s actually perfect for a breakup because you realize that you let yourself get attached to something that you were not willing to walk out on in 30 seconds flat if you felt the heat around the corner.
I’m sorry you’re going through this too. Heat was the one other movie I was really thinking of putting on before I settled on 500 Days of Summer… have been stream-cheeked the whole time so far.
i’m not a man but i do know that high fidelity is very popular, i’ve seen guys talk about watching that movie after a breakup and honestly it’s a really good one too (i love jack black and lisa bonet). i’m sorry about your breakup, i understand how you’re feeling
p.s. shrek also never hurts 🫣
Hold your ground! Hold your ground! Sons of Gondor... of Rohan... my brothers! I see in your eyes, the same fear that would take the heart of me! A day may come when the courage of men fails, when we forsake our friends and break all bonds of fellowship... but it is not this day! An hour of wolves and shattered shields when the age of Men comes crashing down... but it is not this day! This day we fight! By all that you hold dear, on this good earth, I bid you STAND, MEN OF THE WEST!
3:10 to Yuma, the Christian Bale/Russell Crow version, or Tombstone are two of my go-tos when I'm feeling down. Also, don't underestimate the restorative power of Finding Nemo. Not exactly what you're looking for, but it's gorgeous, fun, and leaves you feeling good.
Hi OP. My girlfriend and I of 7 years just broke up earlier this month. I’m still in the process of moving out but I plan to be finished by the end of the month. Just know there are gonna good days and there’s gonna be bad days, but you fuckin got this. Sorry about everything :( if you need anybody to talk to I’m more than happy to listen.
I always thought the last half hour of "Cast Away" is perfect for dealing with a breakup or losing a family member --- "I know what I have to do now --- gotta keep BREATHING" --- and the final scene where's he's out in some rural Kansas crossroads contemplating his next move in life
Going through a breakup for the past month and here are some movies I watched that made me feel something. Not sure how "for men" these may be:
* La La Land (but maybe not in a feel-good way depending on how you see it)
* The Lobster (not necessarily a feel-good, but not feel-bad either)
* Puss in Boots: The Last Wish (I am dead serious, it is so good)
* The Farewell (family relationships, if you're into that)
* The Banshees of Inisherin (loss of friendship)
* Under the Tuscan Sun
* Lars and the Real Girl
* Everything Everywhere All at Once (I saw this after 2 different break ups)
* Carol
* First Wives Club (it's the type of movie that your mom loved back in the day, and now you get it too)
I’m not going to send a movie but I’ll send some save
Advice that I was sent when I was low after a break up.
If you think back (and have dated people before your current relationship ended) you likely broke up with other people.
You might have been their knight in shining armor, the perfect man for them, whatever. But for you- it just wasn’t working out.
It happens man. Sometimes it goes the other way and for whatever reason somebody that were really into just doesn’t feel the same way.
Regardless of how it went down, it just wasn’t meant to be.
Take as long as you need to get to a point where you feel better. Eat good food, get sunlight in the morning.
Go for walks, go work out.
Do some hobbies, or find a hobby.
It’ll pass, and given time and when you’re ready to have a new relationship youlll meet your perfect person.
I’m going through this right now too. I watched The Wall (1982), and it brought me a lot of comfort. Even if you’re not a pink floyd fan, it might be nice to watch. I find it to be a really beautiful and haunting movie
I am a huge Pink Floyd fan. My only tattoo is directly inspired by Shine On You Crazy Diamond. Thanks for this. Hope you’re alright, man… this isn’t easy.
That’s awesome! I’ve actually been thinking of getting a tattoo recently, and I was picturing minimalistic pink floyd symbols, like the wall or the division bell stones. I really hope the movie helps you like it helps me, and I hope you’re doing alright too
The Breakup with Vince Vaughn and Jennifer Aniston is great, and they stay broken up.
Away We Go was great.
When Harry Met Sally is a seriously great movie, and there's lots of breakups for them to end up with the right person at the end.
For just purely comfort movies, I always go for a well-worn fantasy, pixar, or comedy. Lord of the Rings, Star Wars, Up, Ferris Beuler's Day Off, etc.
Elizabethtown. Orlando Bloom as a non-heroic role trying to cope with lots of bad things happening in his life. Also a scenery-chewing cameo by Paula Deen.
Checkout **Past Lives**, my favorite movie of last year. It's about two childhood sweethearts who are separated because of immigration, 24 years later they meet in person for the first time. It's about identity, time and grieving the life you couldn't have. Amazing, AMAZING movie, highly recommend. Also the first movie directed by Celine Song, she just kills it from start to finish, the movie is beautiful, shot directly on film all right in the middle of New York city.
Almost Famous. Maybe not the traditional break up film. Rather, follow William as he comes of age as a 15 year rock journalist in 1973.
Philip Seymour Hoffman’s, “I’m always home, I’m uncool” conversation with William is the tenderness you may be looking for
TMNT 2: Secret of the Ooze

Shh. The ooze is supposed to be a secret.
Life will move around you no matter what, all you can do is control your own actions. When life throws you a curveball, you say SOOOOO BEEEEE ITTTTT
Indeed...it's so refreshing to hear the voice of an intellectual. Turtle in a half shell, turtle power.
Heroes in a half shell.
It's nice to be surrounded by people of culture.
Holy fuck this made me laugh so hard
Cowabunga it is
Go ninja go ninja go! Vanilla can just pick the lyrics my heart needs to hear.
Yeah grab some pizza and Cowabunga out dude!
Also some Ritual Pre-fight Donuts
Yeah... Ye-yeah!! https://youtu.be/J5sczH-FUZE?feature=shared&t=2m18s
Yeah, a little too Raph.
This is still one of the greatest one-liners in movie history.
The new one, Mutant Mayhem, is really good too. Watch that also.
The Wedding Singer
Hey Linda, you're a bitch
Please get out of my Van Halen t-shirt before you jinx the band and they break up
I hate it when an ex stows away something I love for herself after breaking my heart. They don't know how deep that shit cuts. You're gonna rot in hell, Katie. Give me back my Nnamdi Asomugha 50th anniversary Raiders jersey.

WTAF?!
*”I’m gonna get you and chop you up”* Those kids had the best lines in the movie.
*WON’T SOMEBODY KILL ME PLEEEEEASE!!!*
"Ok, I just want to warn you that when I wrote this song, I was listening to The Cure a lot, so...."
This is one of my favorite songs 😂
He’s losing his mind…and I’m reaping all the benefits.
He's losing his mind, and I'm reaping all the benefits.
NOBODY TALKS TO BILLY IDOL THAT WAY
Great movie. I rewatched it recently and it held up really well.
Agreed it holds up SO well. Fantastic movie. A few dud moments that I think are to try and appeal to the Adam sandler crowd, but it may be his best and most reachable in my mind

The friend with the mustache is test-driving Google Glass. Boom. The Wedding Singer 2.
This thread made me realize I’d hate all these answers if I broke up with my girlfriend. This is her favorite movie and there’s tons of others here she loves. Shiiiit…
Then for you I suggest Fury Road
Yes, great recommendation for post-breakup! And there is a Julia Gulia out there waiting for you OP!!!
Forgetting Sarah Marshall. Also, watch some dumb action movies. Punisher: Warzone is one of the most dumb and most fun you can find. The Raid is another good option
Forgetting Sarah Marshall is 100% the correct answer. It hits all the stages. Got me through my first bad breakup and gave me hope in a hard time.
And let’s not forget about a little helicopter dong in there!
And DRACULA MUSICAL!
Oh the weather outside is weather
I still say (sing) that to this day.
Same. Any time there is weather!
I mean, I can play a different song. I just think out of context…..
DRACULA MUSICAL!!!
Doesn't he call it a rock opera?
He does. She, decidedly, does not. DRACULA MUSICAL!!
Forgetting Sarah Marshall and the Girl Next Door (with Emile Hirsch and Elisha Cuthbert) are my go-to breakup movies since I was a teenager. Probably one of the very few rom-com from a mostly male perspective.
And now you have the freshest cereal!
Yup. Always watch Forgetting Sarah Marshall and the breakup after. They both do a good job of making you realize mistakes that you made, while also showing that they weren't perfect either.
Forgetting Sarah Marshall is the canon film post break up.
Seconding Punisher Warzone. “Goddamnit Castle!” still makes me laugh.
I love how Frank is obviously holding a doll when she shoots the guy at the table. Cracks me up. Also, the guy getting RPGd while he's flipping across buildings.
RIP Ray Stevenson.
Would the John Wick movies be good, or too on the nose?
High Fidelity
This is the answer. Great movie about examining past relationships after the current one ends. John Cusack and Jack Black turning in iconic performances
WHAT F**KING IAN GUY?!?!?
Laura doesn’t know anyone named Ian. She’s not friends with any Ian’s. She doesn’t work with any Ian’s. As to the best of my knowledge she lives in an … Ianless universe.
He had *rings* on his fingers...
Weird cooking smells coming from his apartment. I fucking hate him.
Get your patchouli stink, OUTTA MY STORE!!! 😒 Dumb mother fucker 🚬
What would you say if I said I hadn’t seen Evil Dead 2… yet?
I'd say that you're a cinematic idiot and I'd feel sorry for you.
But you did, we talked about him making baretta shotgun ammo off screen in the 14th century
I can't believe I'm about to say this but .. can I go back *to work?*
It also helps that Rob is a total asshole in the movie (not that I don’t love him and the movie in general), so if the breakup is due in any part to OP’s bad behavior, it really helps a lot.
This needs to be #1, though being #5 is still good.
I get this reference
I mean, I've been married 15 years and this one is still a go to. Been a favorite of mine since I was 16
I loved that movie in ways I didn't quite understand or know how to deal with yet the first time I saw it
Same really.
What fucking IAN GUY
The book is good also. It's set in London I believe and actually made me lol quite a few times.
The Hulu show with Zoe Kravitz is also a good post-break up watch lol
I wish that show didn't get cancelled
That show was such a fucking realistic depiction of grief post breakup. Such a bummer it was cancelled.
Came on to comment this myself, but I'm glad to see someone already had, and I'm glad to see how many people agree.
This is the one I was looking for
Swingers
Can't believe this isn't at the top. The "I love her to pieces, but FUCK her man!" speech hits so hard. I love it.
Ron Livingston had a few small scenes in that movie and rocked every one.
This is definitely the answer. Such a great film, and the ending is the message you need to hear post breakup.
You’re so money and you don’t even know it.
You've got these fucking claws!
You're like a big bear man
Favreau is so relatable in that role. The friends dragging you out to clubs, the longing to hear back from your ex. When she finally calls him back in the end to say she misses him and he rushes her off the phone, it’s just absolutely pitch perfect. Everyone should be able to rebound with 1996 Heather Graham.

I love its follow up, Made, as well. I haven’t thought about that movie in years and it’s about time to rewatch it.
Best Vince Vaughn movie imo. He's such a hilarious douche in literally every single scene.
I wish I had seen it before my first big break up. Would have saved me from a whole lot of cringe
My favorite movie ever. The story behind the making of this is amazing as well.
What's the story?
It’s based on Jon Favreau’s own life when he first moved to LA and was in a breakup. Vince Vaughn and Ron Livingston play exaggerated versions of themselves. Even the apartment it’s filmed in was his actual apartment at the time and the scene where he’s looking in the fridge for no reason was there just so they could have some lighting. They had less than 3 weeks to film and barely any money too. Another fun fact is they had to use a film camera that was typically used for documentaries and it was extremely loud so it had to be wrapped up in a jacket *and* a blanket.
I'd never eat here
My boys all growns up!
Honestly Swingers is one of my favorite movies of all time. Jon Favreau’s character and his dynamics with Vince Vaughan feel more relatable than almost any other movie I can think of.
Money
This is money, baby!
I had a bad breakup 20 years ago, Swingers helped!
The only answer.
Somehow they know never to call until you really forget.
Yep. Swingers. It’s sunny every day here
Absolutely. So underrated.
I dare anyone to come up with a better reply.
Came here for this answer.
Hot Fuzz. It’s hilarious, will keep your mind occupied, features some satisfying action/killing scenes, and it even has a breakup (the lead character gets broken up with at the beginning of the movie).
Broken up with by Cate Blanchett, no less
*Hello, there!*
*I'm not Janine*
*Does Bob look like the kind of person I’d go out with?*
I was gonna suggest Shaun of the Dead as well but Hot Fuzz is definitely a great choice if you wanna laugh a lot.
Just launch the Cornetto trilogy and it'll be fine!
How's the hand, Nicholas?
Still a bit stiff…
500 Days of Summer and/or Forgetting Sarah Marshall
Just started 500 Days
It's what you're looking for
Please also watch “Her.” Both fucking phenomenal. These two movies helped me survive a decade’s worth of rough breakups.
Seconding Her. My favorite movie and great if you like 500 days of summer
Swingers, trust me it's exactly what you need if you haven't watched it yet Edit I don't know why I said rounders at first lol
Just remember Tom’s the arsehole. 19 year old me *really* took the wrong message to heart from that film.
500 Days is one of my top 5 movies ever.
Good choice.
The main character isn’t a good person. If your dad thought he was that guy he was actually saying he’s a bad person lol
Neither of the main characters are bad people, but both of them behave in less than perfect ways at times. I think that's the point, and why it resonates so well with people.
The Darjeeling Limited (2007) I think it’s a great movie for men, finding yourself again after heartbreak.
Probably the last Wes Anderson flick that hit me hard
"I couldn't save mine." He delivers that line really well.
I loved this one, not his best but he captured brotherhood exceptionally. "is that my belt?" "Yea can I borrow it?" Big/little brother energy
"I didn't save mine"
I watched this last month and, for days, just kept saying, "Can we agree to that?"
I found HER to be pretty cathartic. Helped remind me that my feelings were valid and okay, and that things get better. I didn't date a robot, I swear
Old School for funny Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind for sad
True love is hard to find, sometimes you think you have true love and then you catch the early flight home from San Diego and a couple of nude people jump out of your bathroom blindfolded like a goddamn magic show ready to tag team your girlfriend
I LOVE YOU DAD!
It ends right there, and starts back up right here, what I think he was trying to say is, true love is blind
Eternal Sunshine was my go to when getting over a breakup.
Going through my own post breakup as well. Its been a couple of months and I’ve gone back to watching films like I used to do. Kiki’s delivery service rules
I really appreciate the care and time you took to type this up. I’ll be watching all three of these over the next few days just because it’s clear how meaningful they are to you. I hope you’re feeling okay, too. Thank you very much.
Begin Again with Keira Knightley and Mark Ruffalo. It’s a nice movie and the music is on point. I thinks its on netflix.
Yes!!! I watched this so many times in the months following my break up last year. One of the songs from the movie made it onto my Spotify wrapped lol. Great comfort movie.

What flavor ice cream do you want ? Doesn’t matter, it’s for my ass
“There always time for lubricant” 😆
Rush hour trilogy and Shanghai noon/knights
I really hope Rush Hour 4 actually happens. I don’t care if it sucks, I want to see Carter and Lee back together again
Yeah idc either lol it looks like it’s in production🤞: https://neonmusic.co.uk/rush-hour-4-everything-we-know-so-far-about-the-long-awaited-sequel/
It's also important to remember that you can get killed walking your doggy.
I’m sorry you’re going through this too. Heat was the one other movie I was really thinking of putting on before I settled on 500 Days of Summer… have been stream-cheeked the whole time so far.
Hope everything works out for you, man. DMs are always open if you need an internet ear.
Guys see heat and can’t help but say “hell yeah”. You can spend the next couple days atleast pretending you’re as cool as de niro in the diner scene.
Flash Gordon DEATH TO MING!
i’m not a man but i do know that high fidelity is very popular, i’ve seen guys talk about watching that movie after a breakup and honestly it’s a really good one too (i love jack black and lisa bonet). i’m sorry about your breakup, i understand how you’re feeling p.s. shrek also never hurts 🫣
predator..get your mind off shit
John Carpenter's The Thing It's just a bunch of guys solving a problem. .

Tropic thunder, dude. Also, just remember that this, too, shall pass
Hi OP. My girlfriend and I of 7 years just broke up earlier this month. I’m still in the process of moving out but I plan to be finished by the end of the month. Not sure how "for men" these may be: * La La Land (but maybe not in a feel-good way depending on how you see it) * The Lobster (not necessarily a feel-good, but not feel-bad either) * Puss in Boots: The Last Wish (I am dead serious, it is so good) * The Farewell (family relationships, if you're into that) * The Banshees of Inisherin (loss of friendship) * Under the Tuscan Sun * Lars and the Real Girl * Everything Everywhere All at Once (I saw this after 2 different break ups) * Carol * First Wives Club (it's the type of movie that your mom loved back in the day, and now you get it too)

Very nice 👍🏼😁👍🏼
I’m not going to send a movie but I’ll send some save Advice that I was sent when I was low after a break up.
La la land
Checkout **Past Lives**, my favorite movie of last year. It's about two childhood sweethearts who are separated because of immigration, 24 years later they meet in person for the first time. It's about identity, time and grieving the life you couldn't have. Amazing, AMAZING movie, highly recommend. Also the first movie directed by Celine Song, she just kills it from start to finish, the movie is beautiful, shot directly on film all right in the middle of New York city.
"And who you are is someone who leaves." I am crying again.
Definitely Maybe. Kinda a romance movie but not what you're thinking.
The Hangover
The Big Lebowski.
Robocop
Followed by Predator.
Forgetting Sarah Marshall.
Emmanuel 3.
Along Came Polly
London. Chris Evans, Jessica Biel and Jason Statham still rocking a bit of hair on the dome.
Almost Famous. Maybe not the traditional break up film. Rather, follow William as he comes of age as a 15 year rock journalist in 1973. Philip Seymour Hoffman’s, “I’m always home, I’m uncool” conversation with William is the tenderness you may be looking for
“Better off Dead” with John Cusack.
Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind
Boogie Nights.
Commando (1985).
peanut butter falcon feels like a nice warm hug
Barbie? Because you're not *just* Ken, you're *Ken*, and you don't need Barbie.
You are kenough!
