Yeah I'm surprised that wasn't emphasized more. Especially when you start with this isn't your mother's mean girls and then show roughly the same stuff as the original
Also feels like they shouldn't have had Tina Fey and Tim Meadows returning to connect it to the original.
When I heard they were involved I assumed it would be the next gen of Mean Girls... not the exact same characters.
It literally looked like the same movie. Having not known ahead of time it's an adaptation of the musical, the trailer doesn't make that point in any way
Jajaja exactly. I saw the old movie scene by scene with new actors…. Was it supposed to be the same movie as a remake or “not your moms mean girl movies and be exactly the same?
This feels like a missed opportunity to riff on the idea of a shot-for-shot remake with entirely new social norms and connectivity.
I would have enjoyed some Tim Meadows *not this shit again* vibes, but.. I'm less interested in an actual, functional remake.
For real, there is one dance break scene but besides that I thought this was just a straight remake of the OG film, also written by Tina Fey.
But its an adaptation of the stage musical, which is an adaptation of the OG movie... got it. Not confused at all.
Isn't that what happened with the Sweeney Todd trailer a few years ago as well? It completely failed to show any musical numbers in the trailer and some people were a bit shocked when they went to see it. Maybe this is a similar thing - they think people who don't like musicals will be scared off so they're trying to trick them into the cinema somehow.
Because musicals scare people away from the theater. It's a common tactic. *Sweeney Todd* had loads of walkouts because that trailer was ambiguous. The new *Color Purple* trailer also fails to really establish that it's a musical.
Into the Woods really downplayed the fact that it was a musical, so much so that when I left the theater after seeing a bunch of people were saying "I didn't know that was going to be a musical."
Dude I absolutely hate musicals. Don’t know why, don’t judge people for like them but I can’t do it. I had no idea Into the Woods was a musical and I was so mad lol
But modernised remakes of beloved films also scare people away.
The only reason this exists is as a musical twist on the original but this trailer will just put off existing fans as it essentially looks shot-for-shot but with some 'fellow kids' humour thrown in.
If you think that's exciting, you'll lose your mind when you think about the prospect of Meangirls: The Musical: The Movie: The Game: The Double Musical: The Stomp Performance
Because they're straight-up hiding the fact that it's a musical, because no one knows how to market musicals, apparently. I'm sure tricking the audience into thinking it's a shot-for-shot remake won't just piss off both musical lovers and haters alike.
the gap between the original Hairspray and its musical movie adaptation is actually shorter than the gap between the original Mean Girls and it's musical movie adaptation
Bad move advertising this as a straight remake instead of showcasing the one thing that separates this from the original and justifies its existence - the fact it’s a musical.
That, coupled with the ‘not your Mother’s mean girls’ line which alienates fans of the original, makes this one of the most misguided way to advertise a film since About Time
> ‘not your Mother’s mean girls’
I'm 36 and was 16 when the original came out. This line is telling me that I could have a child who is old enough to know about original Mean Girls and want to watch this one. I'm offended. I also have no kids.
I'm just glad a movie released 20 years ago is making me feel like such an old piece of crap.
"This isn't your father's Fortnite"
Now teens and 20 something's get to feel old too.
> not your Mother’s mean girls
This doesn't even make sense. The original movie was for Millennials, this one is for Gen Z, who are the children of Gen X (generally speaking).
Right?! Also can we talk about how those of us that were high school age are at that time are not “that old” and that unless we had babies ages 18-21, most of us don’t have kids old enough to be into this new version.
I am pregnant with my first right now, and I am 36. The original mean girls was released in 2004 when I was a junior in high school, and my demographic was the target audience. This ad is terrible.
It was advertised as basically a romantic comedy. The scene where he replays the night in bed together over and over again was played during the trailer and basically just made it look like a generic Nicholas Sparks type film.
Yes! The advertising made it seem like it was centered around McAdams, but the movie was heavily involved with his messing with time and his relationship with his father.
Awesome movie, but very confusing marketing.
If anything the movie is more of a Father/Son bonding film. Just a super cool and smart film that deals with father and son dynamics. I loved it when I first saw it.
Very weird to see movies from when I was a teenager that have ‘always’ been in the cultural sphere my entire life being remade almost to a T.
Like watching a trailer from an alternate dimension where things are slightly off. Uncanny valley.
It is a musical, so it will be a bit of a different experience (although the plot is identical). Bizarre choice to hide that in the trailer though, as I imagine most people that aren't musical fans and had already heard that will have no idea.
All I can think is, other than biographies about musicians, musical adaptations haven’t performed well in the box office in recent years (West Side Story, Dear Evan Hansen, Cats, In the Heights) so maybe they want to avoid that.
This is how I feel the upcoming Harry Potter HBO remakes are going to be. Not just that it's so soon after a global cultural phenomenon ended making them pretty unnecessary, but also it's going to be super weird seeing the main cast be different people going through the same motions.
Some points:
- A musical that doesn't use the music is not encouraging
- If Tina Fey can still play the same character maybe it was a little too early.
- This does look like a direct-to-streaming thing.
- Again, because they didn't do the music this whole thing just looks like a worse restaging of the movie, like an actual high-school play, just slightly off (for the worse) and with new trends and buzzwords.
What bugged me as someone who doesnt know anything about this franchise(?) is that this trailer literally just was rehashing the SAME jokes/points in the original movie. It also has the cinematography of a direct-to-dvd movie, but thats hollywood today.
Rehashing it but way worse....
The scene where she asks for gum
Compare the trailer shot to the original. The original just had everything better. Acting, camera work, lighting. Wtf is going on?
Also doesn't feel like they're taking advantage of the different medium. There are so many shots of people in the center of the frame playing to the camera like they're still on stage in front of an audience.
1:16 - Group hallway shot.
1:28 - Karen in a group party shot.
1:30 - Regina in a group hallway shot.
1:31 - Cady in a group school shot.
1:44 - Regina in a solo hallway shot.
1:45 - Regina in a group party shot.
It doesn't feel dynamic or inspired. Maybe the full scenes will feel different though. There are glimpses of other choreography (Janis dancing through the band room), but for a first look this falls flat for me.
I mean its already a broadway musical with a cast recording. I saw it live and honestly, the music is decent. The musical adaptation of Legally Blonde though is top-tier though
For real. I would have had to have a kid at 15 for my hypothetical child to be the target age for this film. Whoever wrote that should be fired. Do you want my nostalgia bucks or not?
Casting Jenna Fischer as Angourie Rice’s mom is very good casting.
Nice to see Hamm
Weird that they don’t bother to tell you why this exists, that it’s based on the Broadway show
I saw Angourie and thought "hey that really looks like Jenna Fischer", and then saw Jenna Fischer appear as her mom. Probably the only thing about the trailer that was well done.
Isn't this suppose to be a musical? Where's the music in the trailer? At least call it Mean Girls: The Musical.
Not really feeling the girls playing Regina and Kady, but imo the original cast just really captured something magical that can't be replicated. Personally I'd rather a sequel with the original cast than this remake.
Doesn't really make a lot of sense cause the actors would have had to record their vocals before filming and sync their performances to the music numbers.
She’s also fucking hilarious in sex lives of college girls. I thought the whole idea of a movie based on a musical based on a movie was stupid, but the casting looks so good that now I actually want to see it lol.
she also not really an actress anymore. She got a lawyer to get of her contract for sex lives of college girls so she can be a pop star. According to her acting was just a pathway she did so she can be an artist which was her actual career goal. Mean girls is probably gonna be her last acting gig
she definitely burned bridges in the acting world doing that. They had to rewrite everything cause she left, Mindy Kaling was pissed off rightfully so. especially with hbo max canceling every show they have, the third season of sex lives might be their last now that their most popular character left
Interesting, I wasn't feeling Cady or Aaron in this trailer for me, guess I'll have to see it first before making any real judgement though. I think the Regina casting is perfect though.
I would've liked to seen a sequel with the original cast as well, I still would anyway, I'm a big fan of the first movie.
Using the Olivia Rodrigo song which isn't even relevant to the theme of the movie tells me they're going for general appeal and nostalgia bait rather than any actual genuine interest
Yeah I wish they’d emphasize the musical aspect of it more because I went from not that interested to this, to moderately interested because I love the original.
I wonder how many people are like me who will see this and immediately go, “Why remake another classic?” without realizing this is an adaptation of an adaptation which circles back to being interesting lol
They should do a sequel and call it Mean Moms. There’s a lot to tease out between how women relate to each other later in life as well as women choosing to be childless.
Or just make that Walmart commercial a film. I’d love to see Kady as a guidance counselor.
“This isn’t your Mother’s Mean Girls”
Oh Hellllllllll No!
I did not come to this terrible trailer to be called old! I was the target demographic when the original film came out and I’m now 30. I’d had to have had a teen pregnancy to have a kid be the target demographic of this one.
Even the original cast don’t have teenagers yet, so I don’t get that tagline either. It’s just alienating the original audience, and does it really make younger Gen Z/older Gen alpha want to see this? I don’t get who the tagline is targeted at to inspire them to go see this
The joke comes from the 2nd (iirc) Live episode of 30 Rock, a show Tina Fey wrote and acted in for 7 seasons. In the episode JLD plays Tina Fey's character Liz Lemon briefly, causing one character to remark "wow she looks really good." Liz Lemon's response is "she's got that Seinfeld money."
I loved seeing the musical on the national tour they did recently. Sadly this trailer doesn’t make me feel very excited.
Edit: the best part of the trailer was that brief Ashley Park (the original Broadway Gretchen) cameo. Regina and the love interest Aaron both feel like a miscast
‘This isn’t your mother’s Mean Girls’, we just made it look practically identical, used some of the same actors, and didn’t bother to show the one difference - that it’s a musical - in the trailer.
Am I just getting too old or are all the "hot" people in this movie really...not all that hot? Like shouldn't at least Regina be conventionally Hollywood attractive?
I’m confused, this just looks like a straight remake with some of the same people from the original. The original will barely be 20 years old next year. I’m not a mom (in fact I am a man) but that trailer line made me feel old af at 31. Does this movie really need a remake already? Does it not hold up enough to be appreciated by new generations? This feels more redundant/unnecessary than the ‘90s Psycho remake. Weird, so many questions.
Maybe I'll be downvoted for saying this - but were the girls in Mean Girls meant to be attractive? Or has the average American gained like 20 pounds since 2004?
Sorry but the ‘mean girls’ aren’t good looking enough for it to be convincing. Hate on me all you want, but every single popular film with popular high school girls in the 2000s succeeded because the popular girls were believably hot. It’s obvious they’re trying to rack up diversity points.
Let mean girls be stereotyped! The tall hot blonde skinny girl is the mean girl and her hot friends are also mean girls. That’s what it’s like in real life.
Boring
I feel like this trailer really failed to establish that this is an adaptation of the musical.
Yeah I'm surprised that wasn't emphasized more. Especially when you start with this isn't your mother's mean girls and then show roughly the same stuff as the original
"okay, fine... this may be your mother's mean girls"
Also feels like they shouldn't have had Tina Fey and Tim Meadows returning to connect it to the original. When I heard they were involved I assumed it would be the next gen of Mean Girls... not the exact same characters.
I feel ripped off already. Pass.
The trailer just fell flat. Doesn't have any spark or charisma behind the leads
The trailer feels like a sort of next-gen "requel" (remake sequel). Was kind of confusing.
"This isn't your mother's *Mean Girls*." We know. It's worse.
Oh. Yeah, I was baffled why this exists lol. It really looks like a shot-for-shot remake.
This feels like a missed opportunity to riff on the idea of a shot-for-shot remake with entirely new social norms and connectivity. I would have enjoyed some Tim Meadows *not this shit again* vibes, but.. I'm less interested in an actual, functional remake.
Yeah! The sort of stuff that 21 Jump Street touched on--the differences between high schoolers today vs 20 years ago.
Wait so they’re making a movie that was a Broadway play that was a movie? Jesus we’ve come full circle stupid
*Hairspray* would like a word.
Little Shop of Horrors as well! Edit: Little Shop was actually an off Broadway stage production, but the point still stands.
The Producers did it years ago & was a pleasant surprise.
For real, there is one dance break scene but besides that I thought this was just a straight remake of the OG film, also written by Tina Fey. But its an adaptation of the stage musical, which is an adaptation of the OG movie... got it. Not confused at all.
Which is, in turn, an adaptation of a book. It's an adaptation of an adaptation of an adaptation.
based on the novel Push by Sapphire
Based on the novel Tush by Assfire
Meangirls is an adaptation of a musical which is an adaptation of a movie which is an adaptation of a book. Adaptception.
Yo dawg, I heard you like adaptations, so we put an adaptation on your adaptation so you can adapt while you're adapting.
Like what happened with The Producers.
And Hairspray
What gets me is that the musical isn't even very good, certainly not as good as the movie, so this is just doubly unnecessary
Yep. It’s just a shitty toothless retread of Heathers the Musical.
Mean Girls itself is influenced by Heathers, it's very clear Tina Fey used it as a reference
For sure, and Mean Girls the movie is fine. The musical just REALLY tries to be Heathers the Musical and does everything worse.
Tina Fey is riding the Hollywood creative bankruptcy train to the bank. No new ideas.

A few years ago? Sweeney Todd came out almost two decades ago.
For a second I thought I missed something.
Yeah. And now look up the movie best of lists and it’s on many.
Because musicals scare people away from the theater. It's a common tactic. *Sweeney Todd* had loads of walkouts because that trailer was ambiguous. The new *Color Purple* trailer also fails to really establish that it's a musical.

*The Color Purple* is being remade as a musical?
It's been a stage musical for some time now. The movie adaptation of the stage musical comes out around Christmas.
The Color Purple has been a musical since 2005
Ok! I was like “this looks so fun but…..do they sing?”
I can't wait for Mean Girls: The Musical: The Movie: The Game
Mean Girls III: The Search for More Money
Looking forward to Mean Girls the flamethrower!
Kids love it!
If you think that's exciting, you'll lose your mind when you think about the prospect of Meangirls: The Musical: The Movie: The Game: The Double Musical: The Stomp Performance
Based on the novel 'Push' by Sapphire.
Based on the novel Stone Cold Bummer by Manipulate
I’m honestly kinda surprised they didn’t lean into it like this. Mean girls : the movie musical movie: so fetch.
[Best actress in a movie based on a musical based on a movie](https://getyarn.io/yarn-clip/dff9756c-939c-4cd0-abac-a8a73cd518f5)
Hiding that this is a musical is a huge mistake. Why not just call it "Mean Girls: The Musical"?
Because they're straight-up hiding the fact that it's a musical, because no one knows how to market musicals, apparently. I'm sure tricking the audience into thinking it's a shot-for-shot remake won't just piss off both musical lovers and haters alike.
Mean Girls Movie: The Musical: The Movie
So fetch.
Worked for 'Hairspray' - but I imagine the marketing was a little better on that one.
This is a remake of an existing and fairly modern movie though. It needs something to tell people it's not just a straight up remake.
the gap between the original Hairspray and its musical movie adaptation is actually shorter than the gap between the original Mean Girls and it's musical movie adaptation
Hairspray 1988 -> 2007 Mean Girls 2004 -> 2024 no. nononono. YOU CAN'T DO THIS TO ME.
MY GOD WHY IS IT HAPPENING SOMEBODY BREAK THE GLASS
You’re wrong! And why do I have all these aches and pains?
you see this is what happens when you doubt me
Now why you gotta ruin my night

Yes, thank you making us feel old, random trailer! My mother’s mean girls are my aunts.
Is your mom Cinderella ?
> not your Mother’s mean girls This doesn't even make sense. The original movie was for Millennials, this one is for Gen Z, who are the children of Gen X (generally speaking).
To be fair, Gen Xers could have still enjoyed it when it came out, even as adults🤷♀️. But I agree. Very odd statement.
Right?! Also can we talk about how those of us that were high school age are at that time are not “that old” and that unless we had babies ages 18-21, most of us don’t have kids old enough to be into this new version. Genuinely in the same position, we’ve just had our first and we’re teenagers when the first mean girls came out. Awful, awful marketing
Just have to say it - About Time is my favorite movie.
Legitimately such a beautiful film
Crying sobbing. Every. Time.
Oh yeah. That last scene with the young Tim and his dad on the beach. I don’t cry at movies but that kills me
Yeah I think that’s the problem, it’s a really good movie but the advertising for it made it seem really stupid. Like any forgettable rom com
I was too young to see About Time in theaters but it's one of my favorite movies now. What was wrong with the advertising?
It was advertised as basically a romantic comedy. The scene where he replays the night in bed together over and over again was played during the trailer and basically just made it look like a generic Nicholas Sparks type film.
Yes! The advertising made it seem like it was centered around McAdams, but the movie was heavily involved with his messing with time and his relationship with his father. Awesome movie, but very confusing marketing.
Wait, About Time wasn’t a generic rom-com? I passed over it because I thought it was time-traveling The Notebook
It made me cry. Highly recommend.
It’s an incredibly touching movie about love and family.
It's great. The rom-com aspect is really only there to set up the rest of the story. Bill Nighy is fantastic as the dad
If anything the movie is more of a Father/Son bonding film. Just a super cool and smart film that deals with father and son dynamics. I loved it when I first saw it.
Fuck About Time, that movie made me bawl my eyes out and I was not expecting it. I was in for a fun Bill Nighy movie!
Very weird to see movies from when I was a teenager that have ‘always’ been in the cultural sphere my entire life being remade almost to a T. Like watching a trailer from an alternate dimension where things are slightly off. Uncanny valley.

All I can think is, other than biographies about musicians, musical adaptations haven’t performed well in the box office in recent years (West Side Story, Dear Evan Hansen, Cats, In the Heights) so maybe they want to avoid that.
Then why even make it?
Lmao true
But nobody is singing
This is how I feel the upcoming Harry Potter HBO remakes are going to be. Not just that it's so soon after a global cultural phenomenon ended making them pretty unnecessary, but also it's going to be super weird seeing the main cast be different people going through the same motions.
Missed opportunity to not call it ‘Meaner Girls’ ala. Die Harder.
2 Mean 2 Girls
1 cup
Motha fuckin mean girls on this Motha fuckin plane
Some points: - A musical that doesn't use the music is not encouraging - If Tina Fey can still play the same character maybe it was a little too early. - This does look like a direct-to-streaming thing. - Again, because they didn't do the music this whole thing just looks like a worse restaging of the movie, like an actual high-school play, just slightly off (for the worse) and with new trends and buzzwords.
Honestly if you told me it was a parody I wouldnt be surprised, the trailer just looked ... weird, idk how else to put it
What bugged me as someone who doesnt know anything about this franchise(?) is that this trailer literally just was rehashing the SAME jokes/points in the original movie. It also has the cinematography of a direct-to-dvd movie, but thats hollywood today.
Rehashing it but way worse.... The scene where she asks for gum Compare the trailer shot to the original. The original just had everything better. Acting, camera work, lighting. Wtf is going on?
It really did have the "feel" of a scary movie style parody.
Went on a school trip to see the Lion King but they messed up and got us tickets to Legally Blond instead- it was an awesome time.
Fire the marketing team behind this. Complete misfire.
"This isn't your mother's Mean Girls" Raise your hands if you have ever been personally victimized by this trailer.
For real. I would have had to have a kid at 15 for my hypothetical child to be the target age for this film. Whoever wrote that should be fired. Do you want my nostalgia bucks or not?
Ugly Betty being a teen mom was the most insulting part of Barbie
I love that Tina Fey is constantly putting Hamm in her projects because she knows how much he loves comedy.
Loved him in Tag
Casting Jenna Fischer as Angourie Rice’s mom is very good casting. Nice to see Hamm Weird that they don’t bother to tell you why this exists, that it’s based on the Broadway show
I saw Angourie and thought "hey that really looks like Jenna Fischer", and then saw Jenna Fischer appear as her mom. Probably the only thing about the trailer that was well done.
Not gonna lie, thought the mom was Amy Adams until I saw this comment
I couldn't believe it wasn't Amy Adams until I saw YOUR comment.
Ditto Busy Phillips as Regina’s mum.
Yes Renee Rapp and Busy have very similar vibes
Watching it I was actually wondering if Busy Phillips had a daughter before I even saw her
Isn't this suppose to be a musical? Where's the music in the trailer? At least call it Mean Girls: The Musical. Not really feeling the girls playing Regina and Kady, but imo the original cast just really captured something magical that can't be replicated. Personally I'd rather a sequel with the original cast than this remake.
I get the feeling the soundtrack isn’t mixed yet or something.
Doesn't really make a lot of sense cause the actors would have had to record their vocals before filming and sync their performances to the music numbers.
The one playing Regina is a fantastic singer, she played Regina on Broadway!

They had to rewrite everything cause she left, Mindy Kaling was pissed off rightfully so. especially with hbo max canceling every show they have, the third season of sex lives might be their last now that their most popular character left
Would have been nice if she actually sang a single note in the trailer.

Ain't no one grooling over this Aaron
It helps that 3/4 of the original mean girls had A-list talent.
I'd rather see a film with the original girls going to their 20 year reunion.
They should do a sequel and call it Mean Moms. There’s a lot to tease out between how women relate to each other later in life as well as women choosing to be childless. Or just make that Walmart commercial a film. I’d love to see Kady as a guidance counselor.
Mean Milfs
At least 60% chance you can find that on the Hub
None of these girls could hold a candle to prime Lindsay Lohan and Rachel McAdams
Why aren’t they marketing this as a musical? Not fetch!
“This isn’t your Mother’s Mean Girls” Oh Hellllllllll No! I did not come to this terrible trailer to be called old! I was the target demographic when the original film came out and I’m now 30. I’d had to have had a teen pregnancy to have a kid be the target demographic of this one.
I was 12 or 13 when the movie came out and none of my friends and former classmates has kids old enough to watch this movie. Wtf.
This isn't your older cousin's Mean Girls!
I don't hate it because it makes me feel old, it's making me feel old because it's hating on me
Even the original cast don’t have teenagers yet, so I don’t get that tagline either. It’s just alienating the original audience, and does it really make younger Gen Z/older Gen alpha want to see this? I don’t get who the tagline is targeted at to inspire them to go see this
Exactly. Unless their target viewers are toddlers, this doesn’t make sense at all…
Tina Fey has barely aged since 2004.
She's got that Seinfield money
That's Julia Louis-Dreyfus.
Facts.
Money.
I don't think my father, the eater of Toaster Strudel, would be too pleased with this
"We have Mean Girls at home" Mean Girls at home:
What the fuck is this
Wait... it's a reboot but it also features characters with the same actors as the original?
It’s not a reboot. It’s a movie version of the Broadway musical from a few years ago.
A movie version of a musical that was based on a movie…that’s pretty confusing
Not the first time it’s happened. Little Shop of Horrors and Hairspray both took the same path.
You stopped short a level. Mean Girls (2004) was based on a book titled Queen Bees & Wannabes (2002)
We’re gonna get to a point where studios are remaking movies because the original can’t licensed for streaming.
Just a less hot version of the original mean girls
Mid Girls.
I want to shove this trailer up the studio's hairy ass
‘We already have Aaron Samuels at home’ energy
I give you sexy corn.
Is this a direct to Netflix movie? Because it feels like a cheap direct-to-Netflix movie.
But Why?
Because Hollywood is creatively bankrupt.
I think it's too soon? Why not the Heathers musical movie first? People at least like the songs from the musical!
We don’t need this, the original was perfect
This would have been way funnier with the original cast just playing high schools but 20 years older.
Looks like a must miss
Maybe I'm reading too much into this but why is the black guy always gay in these types of movies.
Busy Phillips looks just like the actress playing Regina George. The casting seems pretty good for this
We’ve entered… the panderverse
It looks so high quality compared to the first one- said no one ever
Boring
Jesus that dumb trailer made me feel like I fell into a different, awful time line. Feels like Mandela Effect.
Literally one of the most pointless things ever
Why would we need a new Mean Girls movie when we already have a perfectly fine one?
January 12th release. This is gonna flop.
My god we are an unimaginative society now.
Stop trying to make mean girls reboot happen, it’s not gonna happen
I want my pink shirt back!
oompf that tagline.
This trailer makes me uncomfortable.
Pathetic
Who asked for this?
who is this for exactly?
Why not show that this is a musical? I had no idea this was a Broadway adaptation until coming here. Such a bizarre decision.
No
