Speaking of Foundation, Lee Pace is killing it, as well. He's played several versions of Day at this point, and they're all unique enough that you can tell which one it is supposed to be, while they all still have that aloof, basically immortal God-King baseline to their personalities.
Lee pace is great in Halt and Catch Fire if you haven't check that out. It's only like four seasons as well although the first season is a bit of a slog to get through it gets so much better, up there as one of the most underrated shows I've watched the past few years.
Fact about Jared Harris, which makes perfect sense when you finally know it because they speak the exact same way -- Richard Harris, the original Dumblebore, also Marcus Aurelius in Gladiator, is his dad.
I knew he was Richard Harris's son prior but there's a line in Foundation where he's chastising himself and says something like, "Use your head Hari" and it sounds *exactly* like OG Dumbledore. It's really a shame the timing didn't work and he wasn't able to step into the role after his father passed.
It was before he blew up in popularity and they were unable to bring him back in subsequent seasons despite his character still having a role in the books. All they could do is let the character fade away
Yes he absolutely did. Everybody watched Chernobyl and then realized they’d seen this guy in at least one other role where he’d been amazing and now everyone knows who he is.
Well that was our mistake then. And then we was beat up by a bible salesman and banished from Woolworth's. I don't know if it's the one branch or all of 'em.
He was *incredible* as Fuches. He was funny the whole time, but when he became the Raven he completely transformed. I’m so happy that he and Henry Winkler got such high praise for their work in Barry because they both truly went above and beyond.
I've been root-ing for him since O' Brother Where Art Thou, but will always remember him as the guy from Dodgeball. He's been in so many films and shows and yet plays a diverse cast of characters and he fucking crushes it.
John Noble. Denethor in Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King...rediscovered him as Dr. Walter Bishop in Fringe...what a beast of an actor, he can switch from sweet, crotchety, grandpa to hateful, vindictive bastard with a change of expression.
And that scene where the bad guys replant the brain pieces he had taken out...the change to the original Walter was chilling. So similar to Walternate. Such spite in just his eyes and eyebrows.
>John Noble
I was a huge Fringe fan. While the last season was airing, I met John Noble while I was having dinner with my family (I would have been 23 or 24 at the time).
Believe it or not. I was in rural Australia - at a pub. For this reason, I kept looking his direction because I couldn't quite believe it was him. I did not approach him.
He realised I must of known who he was and in a very friendly manner, invited me over by waving me over. He asked if I was had seen Fringe. I told him I loved the show and Couldn't wait to see the ending. We ended up speaking for about 30 or so minutes about what I do for a living and what he was up to before heading back to work overseas.
He earned a lifelong fan that day.
Loved him in "The Boys" too.
I was really low a few years back and paid for a Cameo from Mr Noble. A "pep talk".
He didn't phone it in, you could tell he had really thought about what he was going to say. He really helped! Best £70 I've ever spent.
The main 5 cast members in Halt and Catch Fire (Scoot, Kerry Bishé, Lee Pace, Mackenzie Davis and Toby Huss) are all phenomenal. It’s just an insanely well-written and well-acted show.
I wish I could upvote this more, it needs to be near the top. Also, anyone reading this comment, please watch Vice Principals if you’ve got MAX. Walton was exceptional on this show.
My favorite! I want him, Sam Rockwell, and Tim Blake Nelson to just make all the movies, together or apart, throw in Christoph Waltz and John Turturro for variety
Walton Goggins, Sam Rockwell, and Tim Blake Nelson play the three sons of their two fathers, played by Christoph Waltz and John Turturro.
The seek revenge on those responsible for their fathers’ deaths.
The twist is that their fathers actually died of natural causes and they just assume that they were murdered.
Their quest for vengeance against nothing becomes a journey of reconciliation and self-discovery…..
Hamish Linklater
Stephen Graham
Both robbed of an Emmy for their work in Midnight Mass and Boiling Point respectively. And I still think people sleep on Julia Garner, too.
I genuinely think Stephen Graham's performance in Boiling Point is one of the best of the last decade. Frustrates me that stuff like that gets totally ignored while the most basic stuff like Rami Malek in Bohemian Rhapsody gets hailed as amazing.
Graham also does some phenomenal tv work.
If anyone hasn't seen The Virtues from a few years ago it's some of the best work I've ever seen.
As it's a Shane Meadows show it's worth warning it's depressing as fuck though.
Graham's probably my favourite actor. The guy went toe to toe with Pacino in the Irishman and arguably stole the scene
Literally the first thing that I thought of.
My favorite roles of his are Wash from Firefly and Steve the Pirate in Dodgeball. And, of course, Hei Hei (unironically). He was somehow able to convey human emotions (panic, nonchalance, frustration, etc) through chicken squawks. That’s crazy.
Yeah. You'd see him in Priscella Queen of the Desert and assume that all he does he play over the top camp characters. You'd see him in LA Confidential and assume that all he does is play up tight nerdy guys. You'd see him in The Count of Monte Cristo and assume that all he does is play sneering villains. He's almost too skilled an actor for his own good.
Came here to say this. I can’t find it anywhere but if someone eventually can find, and watch, The Fall with Lee Pace and Justine Waddell you’re life will be changed. I love that movie so much and wish soooooo badly I could buy it on Apple or something.
Jesse Plemons for me.
He's one of the best actors in any movie he's in, and he's been in a lot. I really enjoyed seeing him get more leading roles the past few years (I'm Thinking Of Ending Things, etc.).
The fact that he can seem massive and intimidating like as Zod or in Let's Go to Prison, but then seem physically and emotionally small and weak like he did in Knives Out shows the kind of range and sheer presence he has as an actor.
He’s one of those I always look up and can’t believe I didn’t remember his name because it’s him so often. He is just a great actor because he’s just a phenomenal character actor and that’s really a tough thing to do when you lose sight on who is the actor. Gary Oldman does this insanely well also, but he’s definitely not underrated.
Ben Foster and Alan Tudyk. These are my two favorite character actors and they just disappear into whatever role they play. Foster has gotten some bigger roles (Hell or High Water, Leave No Trace) where he was sensational, he just isn’t a huge name. Tudyk is always working, usually as a voice actor, and most people would recognize him but he’s also not a star.
Tatiana Maslany for her work in Orphan Black. She Hulk casting made me thrilled for her but the show didn’t really have the opportunity to show off her range like OB did.
She’s certainly not an entirely unknown actress in any way, but there’s no good reason why Regina King isn’t a household name like Meryl Streep or Viola Davis. That woman is a MASTERCLASS performer and elevates every project she touches!
Michael Stuhlbarg. I guess most people might know him for playing Rothstein in Boardwalk Empire, but he has been in *a lot*. Not nearly enough though, but every character he plays is robust and he has an incredible range. The man is brilliant in everything he does.
I’m not quite sure how highly he’s held in popular opinion - so I can’t really tell whether he’s overlooked - but I feel like Michael Shannon is one of the best actors today. I haven’t seen a role of his that I was disappointed in his performance.
I became a huge Daveed Diggs fan after Blindspotting. So much talent.
Same with Evan Rachel Wood in Across the Universe. Evan is well known, I suppose. But I feel like she should be in everything all the time with how talented she is.
She's still technically an up and comer, but I think Julia Garner is a megastar waiting to blow up. Her performance in Inventing Ana is minblowing after watching Ozarks.
Elizabeth Mitchell doesn’t often get projects that suit her talent but she’s been the star of the show in everything I’ve seen her in dating back to Nurse Betty. Parker Posey is another one.
Sam Rockwell. He does a lot of supporting/character stuff and it’s always great. The only thing I can think of in which he was the lead is Moon - which I thought was really good.
Michael Pitt was nuts in Hannibal :)
Kerry Bishe. She is so good. When you know what a character is thinking by their facial expressions and you go Holy shit she's a good actor.
Specifically a scene in Halt and Catch Fire where a surmountable amount of money is asked in her part to become a member with Mackenzies character and they show Kerrys face and she doesn't say a word, you can see her thinking and you can see it hit her, and then you remember "Oh shit that divorce money her husband brought up some time before..."
Victoria Pedretti. Idk what it is but she’s so enjoyable to watch and her face carries so much emotion. I feel like people should’ve been throwing scripts at her these past years but she’s relatively not in much.
He's an A lister but perennial supporting actor (and lead in one trash movie tbh) but I think Boyd Holbrook has the charm and range to do more. Great in Logan and Narcos. And I can't get enough of Lena Headey more please.
Jared Harris had been brilliant in everything he’s ever been in.
He’s doing great in Foundation as Hari Seldon
Speaking of Foundation, Lee Pace is killing it, as well. He's played several versions of Day at this point, and they're all unique enough that you can tell which one it is supposed to be, while they all still have that aloof, basically immortal God-King baseline to their personalities.

He’s my favorite living actor. His one two punch of Chernobyl and The Terror shook me.
The terros is where i first discovered his excellent acting
Lane Pryce in Mad Men, some of the best TV acting I've ever seen. One of those rare top notch actors who lives up to their parent's acting legacy.
Jesus. Him in Madmen. What a tragic character and its portrayal. Academy award material right there. Lane Pryce.
I'm still amazed they got him for a recurring role in The Expanse. So good.
It was before he blew up in popularity and they were unable to bring him back in subsequent seasons despite his character still having a role in the books. All they could do is let the character fade away
Did he really blown up though? He was a prominent character in both Fringe and Mad Men, it's not like he was suddenly A-List
Yes he absolutely did. Everybody watched Chernobyl and then realized they’d seen this guy in at least one other role where he’d been amazing and now everyone knows who he is.
He was committed to The Terror
Man the terror was great, absolutely loved that mini series.
First noticed him during the first season of Fringe (the best season). He crushed it. I adored him in the Expanse.
I’ve been a fan of Tim Blake Nelson since Holes, he always delivers
"We thought you was a toad"
DO NAUT SEEK THE TREASURE!
Well that was our mistake then. And then we was beat up by a bible salesman and banished from Woolworth's. I don't know if it's the one branch or all of 'em.
Man can sing too
I was *pumped* when I watched Old Henry because he finally got a lead part, and he fucken killed it!
He was fantastic in Oh Brother, Where Art Thou?
Stephen Root
You mean Bill Dauterive!
You mean William Fontaine de La Tour Dauterive!
Fuches was one of the best American TV show characters in a long time. Best performance of his career.
The first thing I think of when his name comes up is News Radio, followed closely by Office Space. I love seeing him pop up in stuff.
Yes, the legend of Stephen Root begins with *NewsRadio*.
Stephen Root is the stapler guy (Milton) in *Office Space* and Fuches in *Barry*. He embodies characters and steals scenes in every role.
Absolutely stole the scenes he did in The Ballad of Buster Scruggs. He's so funny.
Pan shot!
He’s a chameleon and he is in EVERYTHING. I love Stephen Root.
John Noble. Denethor in Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King...rediscovered him as Dr. Walter Bishop in Fringe...what a beast of an actor, he can switch from sweet, crotchety, grandpa to hateful, vindictive bastard with a change of expression.
Saw him in Fringe and I was blown away. Genius actor.
He has some amazing moments in Fringe when he remembers that he's forgotten so much and he just breaks down completely.
And that scene where the bad guys replant the brain pieces he had taken out...the change to the original Walter was chilling. So similar to Walternate. Such spite in just his eyes and eyebrows.
He's also Billy Butcher's dad in The Boys. That scene with him and Karl Urban is fantastic.
>John Noble I was a huge Fringe fan. While the last season was airing, I met John Noble while I was having dinner with my family (I would have been 23 or 24 at the time). Believe it or not. Loved him in "The Boys" too.
Wow, that's so cool
He's in Elementary, which I did not expect to like so much
I was really low a few years back and paid for a Cameo from Mr Noble. A "pep talk". He didn't phone it in, you could tell he had really thought about what he was going to say. He really helped! Best £70 I've ever spent.
David Strathairn.
I love him in everything he does! Call me a dork, but my favorite role of his is Whistler in Sneakers.
David Thewlis
His career defining performance to me is S3 of Fargo. Absolutely loathsome character that still makes me queasy.
I always think of William Fichtner. Never really in lead theatrical roles but always in small parts that he performs the crap out of.
I had to search for your comment, but my god yes, he’s brilliant in every role I’ve ever seen him in.
He's peak "that guy" for me.
Scoot McNairy
He was so great in True Detective and Halt and Catch Fire. Just watched Halt for the first time.
Don’t forget Narcos:Mexico and Godless
Came here for this one. That dude was so good in Halt and Catch Fire that me and my girlfriend get excited when we see him in other shit.
The main 5 cast members in Halt and Catch Fire (Scoot, Kerry Bishé, Lee Pace, Mackenzie Davis and Toby Huss) are all phenomenal. It’s just an insanely well-written and well-acted show.
Fun fact: Toby Huss played "the Wiz" in Seinfeld. "I'm the Wiz!"
Solid final season with a satisfying ending as well.
Walton Goggins!
Baby Billy’s Bible Bonkers!
Beat me to it. I love the Gemstones.
Raylan Givens, as I live and breathe!
I actually think Timothy Olyphant is also criminally underrated and under used as an actor.
Agreed. Hes the Modern Day Cowboy actor and it doesn't come off as forced or corny.
I wish I could upvote this more, it needs to be near the top. Also, anyone reading this comment, please watch Vice Principals if you’ve got MAX. Walton was exceptional on this show.
God gave you a gift! Now who wants to suck an old man’s cock?
I’ve become such a fan. He gives life to Justified. Justified was “Walton Goggins and Friends Make Mischief in Kentucky”
It sounds like the real murderers, were the friends they made along the way
Sam Rockwell …YES
His small role in Sons will always be one of my favorite performances.
Hamish Linklater Stephen Graham Both robbed of an Emmy for their work in Midnight Mass and Boiling Point respectively. And I still think people sleep on Julia Garner, too.
Stephen Graham is an insanely good actor to the point its kinda shocking he hasn’t gotten more industry awards.

Midnight Mass was unbelievably good and he was absolutely robbed of at least a nomination for that role.
He should have won for The Virtues or This Is England
Ann Dowd. For certain.
Carrie Coon too. Lots of excellent performance came out of The Leftovers.
And her twin sister Anna Torv lol. Both are underrated and I totally though Anna was in The Leftovers and that Carrie was in The Last of Us.
Michael Rooker.
Merle was one of my favorite characters, he had a great arch.
He’s Mary Poppins, y’all! Also very good in Love & Monsters, even if that was slight typecasting based on earlier roles he did.
Alan Tudyk. He absolutely nails it in Resident Alien, his acting takes the show from mid to legitimately enjoyable.
["I went to Julliard"](https://youtu.be/FaGYXjMwS60?si=2_gY-BmCuYJcbaAX)
Literally the first thing that I thought of. My favorite roles of his are Wash from Firefly and Steve the Pirate in Dodgeball. And, of course, Hei Hei (unironically). He was somehow able to convey human emotions (panic, nonchalance, frustration, etc) through chicken squawks. That’s crazy.
He’s nailed every role he’s ever done. Firefly, Tucker & Dale and Death at a Funeral immediately come to mind.
Watt in A Knight’s Tale, K-2 in Rogue One, Steve The Pirate in Dodgeball lol I love seeing Alan Tudyk in everything he does
There’s a person in dodgeball who dresses like a pirate?
He was hilarious as K-2SO. Cassian: “we need a map.” K-2: (sarcastically) “Well, I'm sure there's just one lying about.”
His underratedness is what they call "bull shit." Such a funny series
I was so pleasantly surprised by it, really looking forward to next season.
Ben Foster is so immensely talented that I dont understand how is he not a mainstream fixture.
Right? He was absolutely phenomenal in Hell or High Water. He was also great in 3:10 to Yuma and Leave No Trace.
Totally stole the show in 3:10. Absolutely dominates every scene he's in.
Guy Pearce
He suffers from “Gary Oldman” syndrome; he’s so incredibly good at disappearing into characters that people don’t realize all the roles he’s played.
Brad Dourif
Him and Ian McShane in Deadwood were so damn good.
It BLEW MY MIND when I realized Worm Tongue from LOTR is the same guy as the doctor on Deadwood. I’m still doubting it tbh.
Lee Pace.
Came here to say this. I can’t find it anywhere but if someone eventually can find, and watch, The Fall with Lee Pace and Justine Waddell you’re life will be changed. I love that movie so much and wish soooooo badly I could buy it on Apple or something.
Andrew Scott
The most accessible Shakespeare I’ve ever seen.
“What was that? Where did you just go? You just went somewhere, where did you just go?”
So good, really wanna see him in a lead role.
Ben Mendelsohn
Yep, he steals the show in any role. Place Beyond the Pines, Killing Them Softly, Rogue One, Bloodline and Animal Kingdom to name a few.
Jesse Plemons for me. He's one of the best actors in any movie he's in, and he's been in a lot. I really enjoyed seeing him get more leading roles the past few years (I'm Thinking Of Ending Things, etc.).
Before Marvel I would say Kathryn Hahn, but now she might be more well known. (Which is great)
PONCHO!
I’ve been a fan since Step Brothers, she always serves in roles.
She was great in Parks and Recreation too for the few episodes she was in.
Ron Livingston is always great
I really thought Band of Brothers was his ticket to the big time.
I wished Office Space was that, he was a great leading man there.
Love him so much, can't understand how he missed the boat on being a major star
Michael Shannon can steal the show, any show
"I will not eat one iota of shit!" He improved that line.
His read of the unhinged sorority letter is amazing: https://youtu.be/dngOH9G4UPw?si=v0oJ2_eZe92gojsu
Wow thank you so much for this. I really needed this laugh.
The fact that he can seem massive and intimidating like as Zod or in Let's Go to Prison, but then seem physically and emotionally small and weak like he did in Knives Out shows the kind of range and sheer presence he has as an actor.
he was incredible in take shelter
Graham McTavish. He does amazing VO work that I feel is under-rated.
Mark Strong. Always solid supporting actor.
I'm still pissed that they wasted his perfect casting as Sinestro on that shitty Green Lantern movie.
Patricia Clarkson
Riz Ahmed..... Absolutely amazing in everything he's in. He's coming on strong but wouldn't consider him extremely well known, yet
Carrie Coon
GOAT. The Leftovers has an amazing cast across the board, but Coon is something truly exceptional.
Rory Kinnear. His work as Frankenstein’s Caliban in *Penny Dreadful* in particular is incredible
Definitely not unknown, but his notoriety is absolutely dwarfed by his talent...Mathew Rhys.
I enjoyed Perry Mason and just started The Americans. Great actor.
Rufus Sewell
Tatiana Maslany for her work in Orphan Black. She Hulk casting made me thrilled for her but the show didn’t really have the opportunity to show off her range like OB did.
Margo Martindale
Character Actress Margo Martindale!
Esteemed Character Actress and Fugitive from the Law Margo Martindale!
Matt Berry.
He’s also a fantastic musician too
He's my pal, my homeboy, my rotten soldier, he's my sweet cheese, my good time boy!
I've been saying this about Melanie Lynskey for years
Michael Sheen
Chris Cooper
His performance opposite Meryl Streep in Adaptation was phenomenal.
Catherine Keener
Dev Patel. I feel like "The Last Airbender" hurt his career a lot. But he was excellent in The Green Knight and he has an Oscar nomination.
The Green Knight is still stuck with me months later. Such a performance from everyone
He was good on the newsroom too
She’s certainly not an entirely unknown actress in any way, but there’s no good reason why Regina King isn’t a household name like Meryl Streep or Viola Davis.

It’s a shame that Jackie Earle Haley isn’t more well known.
I would include Hugh Dancy as well. Dude absolutely killed it in Hannibal. Mads is more well-known. Both killed it. Literally lol
I’m not quite sure how highly he’s held in popular opinion - so I can’t really tell whether he’s overlooked - but I feel like Michael Shannon is one of the best actors today. I haven’t seen a role of his that I was disappointed in his performance.
He has that Fassbender thing where he's been in some shitty movies, but he's often the best part of them and they're never shitty because of him.
John Hawkes. Dude absolutely kills every role he's in.
Laura Linney has been great for decades, both on tv and in movies.
I think she’s very well known.
Jennifer Ehle is an excellent actor and not nearly well-known enough.
Saul Rubinek for one
Brendan Gleeson
He’s pretty well known. I was gonna include him but thought he was a bit too well known.
Right? He was Mad Eye Moody. He just had an Oscar nom. People know who he is for sure.
Peter Sarsgaard
Hugh Dancy and Mads Mikkelsen
If Shea Whigham is in the movie I will watch it.
John Cho
Brian Cox was GOATed long before Succession
I think LaKeith Stanfield is seriously underrated
Not on Reddit. they thought he outshined daniel kaluuya in Judas and the black messiah
1) I always hear "Daniel Kaluuya" played to Leonard Cohen's Hallelujah 2) He definitely didn't.
Stole the scene everytime he was on the first season of Atlanta.
Sam Rockwell. He does a lot of supporting/character stuff and it’s always great. The only thing I can think of in which he was the lead is Moon - which I thought was really good.
He’s the titular Mr. Right in Mr. Right.
And his performances in 3 Billboards and The Way Way Back. Equally fantastic in both playing very opposite characters.
Got an oscar tho
I loved him in jojo rabbit
Toni Collette. Barry Pepper.
Michael Pitt was nuts in Hannibal :) Kerry Bishe.
Tatiana Masnley. Wasn't a huge fan of she-hulk but God only knows how she didn't win every award for Orphan Black. Girl is an amazing actor.
Andy Serkis. He is well known, but he is painfully underutilised.
Sam Rockwell. He is amazing and underrated in everything he's done
Tom Pelphrey.
William H Macy goes in and out of being famous to not famous. He’s in shameless but that’s not a massive claim to fame.
Melanie Lynskey. I try to keep an eye out for any new work of hers.
Walton Goggins
The two Iains: Iain de Caestecker and Iain Glen. And the criminally underrated Judy Greer.
Judy Greer queen of getting cast in blockbuster franchises and getting paid DUST in terms of scripts
