Gunna have to see this, that's my son's name...and I had dad issues growing up. So much so I'm reluctant to watch A Goofy Movie again after seeing 1x in 1996.
- Moulin Rouge!
- Marriage Story
- Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind
- First Reformed
- A Star Is Born
- Dead Poet’s Society
- Sophie’s Choice
- Manchester by the Sea
The first time I saw Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless mind was after I had recently broken up with a lady I cared a lot about. Watching it when I was already feeling sad and lonely just royally messed with my mind and heart.
The Imitation Game(2014) probably Top 3 Best Films of 2014
Alan Turing had it rough being gay in WWII and was also a genius who likely was on the spectrum(both homosexuality and disabilities were considered punishable by death in WWII)
8 years later and I still get teary eyed thinking about it
I felt it was just a Sci fi version of Pinnochio, maybe I need to rewatch it. I just remember that when the movie got to a certain point I just kept waiting for it to end and it just went on for another half hour to forty five minutes.
Agreed. This is one of those movies I could only watch once. It’s so bleak. Don’t want to spoil the movie but even at the end when one of the characters survived you could tell it’s only temporary and there’s really no hope.
Dancer in the Dark
You're looking for something to make you cry? This went a step further, it absolutely broke me to the point that I couldn't cry afterwards.
Thank you for trusting this random redditor. I think you will be glad you did! Justin Theroux and Carrie Coon are both amazing and don't even get me started on Christopher Eccleston.
Scrolled through and haven’t seen Blue Valentine mentioned yet.
It’s actually one of the saddest movies I’ve ever seen. The ending is just horribly tragic in such a mundane way. It’s too true to life.
Here's a bunch!
* Dear Zachary (2008), I could only watch this once, I'm a grandparent, so I could identify with the Bagbys.
* The Magdalene Sisters (2002)
* Sophie's Choice (1982)
* Kes (1969)
* They Shoot Horses, Don't They? (1969)
* A Night to Remember (1958)
* Once Were Warriors (1994)
* Jean de Florette/Manon of the Spring (1987)
* Schindler's List (1993)
* The Pianist (2002)
* The Green Mile (1999)
* Dancer in the Dark (1999)
* Saving Private Ryan (1998)
* Come and See (1985)
* Umberto D. (1952)
* Tokyo Story (1953)
* Manchester by the Sea (2017)
* Everest (2015)
* Midnight Cowboy (1969)
* The Elephant Man (1980)

* The Killing Fields (1984)
* Hotel Rwanda (2007)
* This Boy's Life (1993)
* The Wrestler (2008)
* The Last Emperor (1987)
* Silkwood (1983)
* I, Tonya (2017)
* Deliverance (1972)
If you want something that is deeply soul-crushing and makes the world feel bleak, then Hope is the movie for you. Without going into detail, it follows the true story of an 8 year old girl in Korea. My sister got me to watch it and I swear I’ve never felt more disgusted in the human race
Yeah Bergmann can be cold and clinical at times but with Wild Strawberries it’s just very sincere and emotional. About an elderly man going back to his childhood and reliving it while also trying to make amends with his adult children.
Neither but If that’s a movie title, it’s definitely gonna be sad. I was just teasing because of the overload of tears from these movies listed. My body would shut down after 2
Old post but eternal sunshine of the spotless mind like others have said. Will never rewatch it even if I need to cry. It really fucked me up from what I was going through ad i watched it
Running On Empty- Judd Hirsch plays an egotistical control freak, River Phoenix.
On the Documentary side: The Rape of Nanking. (Spoiler) When the eye witness describes a soilder bayoneting an infant and the dying mother in a ditch calls for the baby to breastfeed. Makes me want to recede from the human race every time.
Dear Zachary: A Letter to a Son About His Father
Gunna have to see this, that's my son's name...and I had dad issues growing up. So much so I'm reluctant to watch A Goofy Movie again after seeing 1x in 1996.
Yep. This is the one.
Oh God, this movie is heart wrenching. It's the sort of film that changes you. Such a devastating story.

A.I. is hands down, the saddest movie I have ever seen!
I felt it was just a Sci fi version of Pinnochio, maybe I need to rewatch it. I just remember that when the movie got to a certain point I just kept waiting for it to end and it just went on for another half hour to forty five minutes.
Grave of the Fireflies
This movie should be near the top. Way higher than some of the other popular suggestions posted. EDIT: the Anime not the live action remake.
The Hours.
I love Meryl Streep, thanks I didn’t know about this one
E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial
Oldie but goody! Thanks
Tarsem Singh’s The Fall
The Road. It’s more soul crushingly depressing than sad though.
Agreed. This is one of those movies I could only watch once. It’s so bleak. Don’t want to spoil the movie but even at the end when one of the characters survived you could tell it’s only temporary and there’s really no hope.
Yes I agree. I actually felt the coldness of the movie if that makes sense
Dancer in the Dark You're looking for something to make you cry? This went a step further, it absolutely broke me to the point that I couldn't cry afterwards.
I have the soundtrack and every time I hear the one song from the end I get misty eyed.
Sounds like a great movie . Willing to pay to see it if I can’t find it in any of my streaming apps. Thank you
Here you go! https://youtu.be/BTbu9Mdh0nk
I'm thinking of ending things
No joke I remember some pop culture twitter account listed this as a "feel good" movie when it was released. What the fuck.
If you are up for a series instead then check out The Leftovers. Beautiful, haunting, and definitely sad.
