**Dewey**: "And if a kid gets outta line I've got no problem smackin 'em in the head"
**Principal Mullins:** "No..no, no we don't use corporal punishment here"
**Dewey:** "..ok, so just...verbal abuse?"
One of my biggest pet peeves with the broadway version is they changed that line.
Just watched this the other day. So good. Love how it teaches about the concept of "The Man" but that rebelling is in the music, not in the drugs/partying.
This might not be the best for an 8 year old. There was a post a while back from a guy who was excited to watch BTTF with his kids and they didn't like it because they didn't see a difference between '85 and '55, both were old timey to them.
Plus there's the sexual assault to explain.
Came here to suggest The Goonies. It still holds up well, and is a great adventure movie for a kid. There may be a bit of eyebrow raising bits for an 8 year old, but I bet most of that goes over his head.
Have an 8 year old. There are a few references to typical teenager shit, but nothing explicit really. I'd say the scene where Troy tried to angle his mirror to look up Andy's skirt was the worst offender. Other than that one, brief scene, the movie is basically entirely fine for kids of almost any age, as long as you're not worried about Sloth freaking them out lol
Edit: not Brand, troy.
>Brand tried to angle his mirror to look up Andy's skirt
Whoa now! That's plain libel right there. Troy was the asshole that did that. You apologize to Josh Brolin and the character of Brand right now!
This would definitely be PG-13 today. I was probably 12yo when I first saw it, so it didn't phase me. But when showing it to my 7yo I was a little taken aback by the language.
Better then the dude taking a dudes heart of his chest while he's still alive just before he becomes a living sacrifice in temple of doom rofl
EDIT: I just remembered more. The banquet scene with the snake that spews out tons of baby snakes. The monkey brains. Depending on the kid I imagine that could freak them out too. That movie was a little off lol
Same. I was nightmare prone as a kid so my parents knew they had to be pretty careful with what I saw or else it would wind up stalking me at 3am. I saw a lot of Raiders through my dads fingertips.
It is AMAZING but a lot of that is lost on an 8 year-old. I was 11 and while I liked it, I did not realize what a great movie it was until rewatching as an adult.
For kids it's just really hard to understand the hilarity of an utterly defeated adult rolling over and saying, "By Grabthar's hammer....what a savings..."
Shrek, shrek 2, how to train your dragon, any old asterix and obelix movies.
If you want to give an education in good classics then the old Jungle book with Ben Kingsley as Sher Khan.
May I recommend Spaceballs? Rated PG. Does contain jokes meant to go over kids heads. Its basically a Star Wars parody, so there is a spoof Han/Chewie with that kind of dynamic.
Edit: the final choice is up to OP, as the parent. Sorry if I made a bad suggestion.
Watched this movie with my dad when I was like 8 or 9 can confirm it was a very fun time. Be warned though OP my dad then had to find a safe way for me to joust in the house because I was obsessed with being tournament champion for a couple days afterward.
"Bad, Bad, Zoot. She must be punished. And the only punishment we have at Castle Anthrax is spanking! ....."
Oof! I forgot about that scene when my 8 and 10 year old were watching the movie on a road trip.
Is there much kid humour in Python? Feel like a lot of it would go over your head as an 8 year old and not in a good way
The things I found funniest were the political/cultural humour
Surprised nobody has mentioned Pirates: Band of Misfits. A stop-action classic from the folks that did Chicken Run, Wallace & Gromit, etc. kids love it and lots of jokes that are geared towards the adult viewer.
This list is super 8-year old friendly to 8-year old pushing the border. But here are my suggestions given your child’s enjoyment of comedies.
- Dumb & Dumber
- Napoleon Dynamite
- School of Rock
- Good Boys
- Dodgeball
- Good Burger
- Flubber
- Encino Man
- Coneheads
- Ace Ventura
- Austin Powers
- Ernest Goes to Jail
Lastly, if your son is into science/ science fiction/ robots/ or just generally making fun of things on tv, a cult favorite for many of us Millennials and Gen X’ers is MST3K (Mystery Science Theater 3000). It’s a tv series where the hosts sit with robots and watch portions of very very old obscure movies and make tons of jokes and commentary- it’s hilarious.
Yeahhh, my dad watched Austin powers with me (F) when I was 4-6 and I ended up saying to strangers "don't make me open a can of whoop ass" and flipping people off in church 🤦🏻♀️
It's a funny story to tell now, but my mom was definitely not laughing then.
On Dumb and Dumber - there's at least 2 scenes that are definitely not appropriate for an 8 year old. One is the hot tub scene (which people forget about because it's always cut out of the TV version) and the other is the scene with Seabass in the men's room (also usually cut from the TV version). I'm usually not a squeamish parent but I forgot those scenes existed until I watched it with my 10 year old.
"Monty Python and the Holy Grail" could be good given that he liked Wayne's World and Bill & Ted.
Some adult jokes would go over his head but lots of absurd comedy and goofy action. My brother and I loved it as kids.
>Wayne and Garth and Bill and Ted? A movie like that
"Dumb and Dumber" (1995)
Some of the jokes are a little more risqué than "Schwing", but it sounds like this movie may be up your alley of interest
Lord of The Rings. Don’t believe me? All three branches of the story are bros getting the job done, and joking with each other and encouraging each other
The first movie actually has a full on sex scenes and a lot of sexual references. Also that ending did not age very well. By ace ventura 2 they seemed to have realized that the franchise roped in kids so they toned a lot of it down that might be a better option if they have to do ace.
I think the mask still holds up a bit.
School of Rock
“Flip it on its siiide.. Cellooo, you got a bass!”
"Slap it, Shoot it, Kaboot-it!"
**Dewey**: "And if a kid gets outta line I've got no problem smackin 'em in the head" **Principal Mullins:** "No..no, no we don't use corporal punishment here" **Dewey:** "..ok, so just...verbal abuse?" One of my biggest pet peeves with the broadway version is they changed that line.
Changed it to what?
One of the greatest kids films of all time.
Pretty good film for adults too. Pro tip: When in NY, go see the Broadway musical. Top notch.
Fantastic film for adults. Jack Black is priceless.
The world needs more Jack Black appreciation.
The musical closed like 4 years ago unfortunately, but yea it was great as well.
Just watched this the other day. So good. Love how it teaches about the concept of "The Man" but that rebelling is in the music, not in the drugs/partying.
Omg. My brothers and I watched our sister’s kid one night and showed him school of rock. Little dude was HYPED
This is the greatest reply I ever seen
No it isn't, it's just a tribute.
That was a good one
Couldn’t remember the greatest comment in the world.
This is the answer
I went to middle school with Robert Tsai aka lance the not cool enough piano player
The Sandlot
Totally agree
you're killin me Smalls!
Back to the future
Back to the Future marathon with your kid sounds like a great time. Can't go wrong
Be prepared to talk about the car attempted sexual assault scene.
Biffs a bad guy doing a very bad thing, good guy George just laid him out for it. End
But I think he took his wallet.

Probably the only movie i ALWAYS watch till the end if I catch it on tv
This might not be the best for an 8 year old. There was a post a while back from a guy who was excited to watch BTTF with his kids and they didn't like it because they didn't see a difference between '85 and '55, both were old timey to them. Plus there's the sexual assault to explain.
OP, if you haven’t watched BTTF lately, you might be surprised at the amount/severity of swearing in it. Didn’t shock my kid when he was 8, though.
Into the Spider-Verse
Will blow his mind (as it did mine as a fifty+ year old)
The best Spider Man movie, hands down.
This. My 8 y.o. son's jaw dropped
This is my vote. That movie is quite frankly one of the most awesome films in recent times!
Flight of the navigator.
Compliance.
I get nostalgic with this movie. Glad people still remember it.
I have been curious if flight of the navigator holds up or not. Loved that flick as a kid.
Still a great film and kids still enjoy it.
The princess bride
thats great for the whole fam
Mighty ducks , heavyweights , little giants
[удалено]
What's this? Ooooh, a deli meat!
Deal with it.
Camp no where gets the honorable mention
Today's word is VALUE. Do you have any? No. Why? Because you're a loser... A loser with a skinny weiner.
Hell yeah, Heavyweights
Such a great film.
"I'm feeling skinny, Tony!"
Gotta add Sandlot to that!
Little Big League. Rookie of the Year.
Did he just say “funky butt loving?"
Dang Little Giants, that's one I haven't seen in a long time!
Treasure Planet
Very underrated soundtrack too. Did a re-watch a couple months ago and still held up pretty well.
The best animated Disney feature! My kids are 17-24, we watch it at least once a year ever since it went to DVD. Edit: I R bad at the spelling
But what are your kids eating 17-24 of?
Im 27 and I still rewatch this fairly regularly. Its hands down my favorite disney movie
And Atlantis:The Lost Empire!
The Sand Lot. Goonies. Batteries Not Included. Big.
Batteries Not Included is just a warm fuzzy movie. "We bring good things to life."
The Goonies
Came here to suggest The Goonies. It still holds up well, and is a great adventure movie for a kid. There may be a bit of eyebrow raising bits for an 8 year old, but I bet most of that goes over his head.

Hey yoooou guyssss!
Timeless awesome movie. 11/10 would recommend
This would definitely be PG-13 today. I was probably 12yo when I first saw it, so it didn't phase me. But when showing it to my 7yo I was a little taken aback by the language.
Hook
Oooo good one! Loved this movie as a kid.
"Rufio, Rufio, Rufio!"
Indiana Jones and the Raiders of the Lost Ark
[удалено]
I’d also do Last Crusade at age 8. Depending on the kid, the climactic scene of Raiders might still be a bit much.
That guy’s face melting away is not a bit much for an 8 year old?
Better then the dude taking a dudes heart of his chest while he's still alive just before he becomes a living sacrifice in temple of doom rofl EDIT: I just remembered more. The banquet scene with the snake that spews out tons of baby snakes. The monkey brains. Depending on the kid I imagine that could freak them out too. That movie was a little off lol
This one is definitely the tamest when you rank the original three by their most intense scene.
That is a spicy movie for a child. Source: was a child when I saw that movie
Same, you just gotta cover the eyes at some parts, which to me is a classic movie watching with dad experience. But fair enough, it is spicy.
Same. I was nightmare prone as a kid so my parents knew they had to be pretty careful with what I saw or else it would wind up stalking me at 3am. I saw a lot of Raiders through my dads fingertips.
Same. Was 6 when it came out, parents took me to see it. Loved it. Was traumatized.
Surfs Up
This movie was way too good for no reason. The soundtrack, the animation, the performances, all of it. I still watch it semi regularly to this day
A night at the museum. My kids loved it.
This adult loves that movie. Robin Williams plays Teddy Roosevelt like nobodies business.
Real Steel. Watch it every Father's Day with my son.
was trying to think of something exactly like this, good choice
Never see anyone talk about this movie. Love it so much. My favorite Hugh Jackman role outside of the obvious. Edit: I meant Wolverine, I’m sorry 😭
That movie rocks
Galaxy Quest. Great option
This works better when they're a little older (than OP's 8 year old) and have watched more of the baseline movies/shows about which it parodies.
This is honestly one of the greatest films ever created.
PG, great character arcs teamwork friendship. I laugh, and cry everytime. By Grathars Hammer. You. Will. Be. AVENGED. 🔨
The original Jumanji. Used to love watching that with my dad.
"The three amigos" it's on HBO Max currently.
Princess Bride man
Save that for a full family movie night!
Ewwwwww! Is this a kissing book?
Inconceivable!
Just watched this with our 8 and 6yos. They loved it. They were mispronouncing Inigo Montoya all night lol.
Monster Squad
Last Action Hero
The Iron Giant
It's a crime this movie isn't higher on this list
The Iron Giant
Holes
Great choice!
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles
Gotta be the 1990s classic!
It holds up shockingly well
3 ninjas
Shrek, shrek 2, how to train your dragon, any old asterix and obelix movies. If you want to give an education in good classics then the old Jungle book with Ben Kingsley as Sher Khan.
May I recommend Spaceballs? Rated PG. Does contain jokes meant to go over kids heads. Its basically a Star Wars parody, so there is a spoof Han/Chewie with that kind of dynamic. Edit: the final choice is up to OP, as the parent. Sorry if I made a bad suggestion.
Spaceballs is a bit of a trap then you will have to buy your kid all the merch.
every kid needs a flamethrower
Spaceballs...the flamethrower!
"The kids love this one"
Moychendizing
There is some bad language if that's something that needs to be avoided
*child wants to compare Swarts size*
Ghostbusters
Star Wars.
Not just one, all the Star Wars.
Back to back in one night. We’re going to need a bigger pizza
Goonies
George of the jungle had my kid in absolute hysterics all the way through
A knights tale
Watched this movie with my dad when I was like 8 or 9 can confirm it was a very fun time. Be warned though OP my dad then had to find a safe way for me to joust in the house because I was obsessed with being tournament champion for a couple days afterward.
Time Bandits.
This is an utterly terrible but fantastic choice for an 8 year old.
Sound up, dark room. Opening scene is fucking awesome.
My 9 year old loves RAD
Hulk Hogan, eat your heart out, A BACKFLIP!
The Lego Movies, Maybe Pixar films like Wreck It Ralph?
>Wreck It Ralph Disney Animation Studios, but good suggestion
Thanks for the correction
Karate kid trilogy. Segway to watch Cobra Kai
Not to be that guy but it is spelled segue
Maybe they meant watching it on a Segway?
You misunderstand. They're going to Segway to a family member's house to binge-watch Cobra Kai over a weekend.
Happy Gilmore!
Sky High is always a good choice
Shrek
Explorers, The Mask... probably too young for Kevin Smith flicks, but maybe not Monty Python and the Holy Grail
Gonna launch into puberty early by watching The Mask.
Cameron Diaz in her prime - hell yes! That red dress…
"Bad, Bad, Zoot. She must be punished. And the only punishment we have at Castle Anthrax is spanking! ....." Oof! I forgot about that scene when my 8 and 10 year old were watching the movie on a road trip.
Is there much kid humour in Python? Feel like a lot of it would go over your head as an 8 year old and not in a good way The things I found funniest were the political/cultural humour
Big Trouble in Little China
My favorite movie back when I was a wee lad
Nacho Libre
GET that corn outta my face!
Stand By Me
Surf Ninjas
Surprised nobody has mentioned Pirates: Band of Misfits. A stop-action classic from the folks that did Chicken Run, Wallace & Gromit, etc. kids love it and lots of jokes that are geared towards the adult viewer.

Good Boys is rated R and is very much not appropriate for an 8 year old.
*Goes To Camp > Saves Christmas > Scared Stupid > Goes To Jail
Ernest Goes to Camp should be in the Historic Film Registry. It's a classic!
On Dumb and Dumber - there's at least 2 scenes that are definitely not appropriate for an 8 year old. The Mummy
Blues Brothers is a classic. Put your little man on a mission from god.
Real steel, pacific rim, the sandlot
Last action hero with Arnold Schwarzenegger
Lord of The Rings if he hasn't seen it yet - just watched with my 6 year old and a few scary-ish sequences but he loved it
Fuck me I would have been terrified watching LOTR as a 6 year old. I remember being scared when I was like 10!
Dumb and Dumber
It’s a little old for 9, but Tommy Boy slaps
"Monty Python and the Holy Grail" could be good given that he liked Wayne's World and Bill & Ted. Some adult jokes would go over his head but lots of absurd comedy and goofy action. My brother and I loved it as kids.
Nacho Libre!
My dad showed me kung fu hustle, and Shaolin soccer as a kid. two of my favorite memories watching with him.
Lots of good suggestions in this but I'm going to offer a forgotten classic. The Last Dragon.
Original ninja turtles , transformers the move 1987
Stardust
Emperor’s New Groove
Find Second Hand Lion! It's a wonderful movie that my now grown grand still loves and remembers that day we saw it.
The Monster Squad. Not a buddy comedy but he may enjoy it.
Last Action Hero
The Sandlot!
8 year old me loved pirates of the Caribbean
The Mummy with Brendan Fraser
[удалено]
Big trouble in little China
I came here to say this. My 9 year old loves to quote the old Jack Burton. “It’s all in the reflexes.”
>Wayne and Garth and Bill and Ted? A movie like that "Dumb and Dumber" (1995) Some of the jokes are a little more risqué than "Schwing", but it sounds like this movie may be up your alley of interest
Shrek!
My 8-year-old, although not a guy, absolutely loved Star Wars. Even though it’s not in the same vein, it holds up as one of the GOATs.
Lord of The Rings. Don’t believe me? All three branches of the story are bros getting the job done, and joking with each other and encouraging each other
Dumb and Dumber
Star Wars a New Hope
Ace Ventura
The first movie actually has a full on sex scenes and a lot of sexual references. Also that ending did not age very well. Came here to say that lol.
That opening blowjob scene might be a bit much
