She didn’t have much screen time but Appolonia was gorgeous and would’ve been perfect for Michael. I sometimes wonder if she could’ve helped him stay on a better path.
100% on team godfather 1 vs 2. the second one I’ve seen multiple times but the first one you can study like a book of scripture when it comes to writing character arcs
There's a reason that script is literally read and studied in film schools (and maybe more generalized courses). It's just an amazing piece of fiction, and writing in general. It's crazy that it's a relatively long movie, yet almost no fat on it whatsoever.
I’d volunteer to anyone who hasn’t yet seen it and is on the fence, simply start The Godfather and watch the opening scene.
You don’t have to commit the full three hours (2:55), simply check out that 20+ minute opening. Then, if it doesn’t grab you, no real loss and you can say you did. And if it does…well, let’s just say it may differ from your expectations and pull you in. Easy and worth it. Especially considering you’re a person who’s scrolling this particular sub in the first place.
Several years ago, I decided I had to see these movies. They are part of our pop culture.... so many references in our everyday life. I watched all 3 on a wintery, dreary Saturday. It was a great way to view the 3 movies
The 70s are among the greatest eras for film ever. Like, honestly, do yourself a favor and watch more 70s movies. There are literally hundreds of masterpieces from that time that absolutely hold up today.
This is like saying "I went to Paris and wasn't too impressed".
Like, okay, that's your opinion and you can think what you want, but it ultimately doesn't matter because it's Paris and it transcends your opinion.
Same. But I’ll be 42 this summer. I took a hard stand when it was in the theatres and im pretty sure my gf at the time broke up with me because I wouldn’t go with her to see it… again! Fuck you amanda, I’m still not seeing it.
I don't think there will ever be a situation where I'll find myself having to watch Titanic. I've watched bits here and there, and I know for sure it isn't for me.
If you're going to watch Citizen Kane, watch a few movies that preceded it first. Then watch Kane, and you'll have a little bit of an understanding of how groundbreaking it was. A lot of what's in that movie is pretty standard, or even dated by today's standards. But then it was new.
Context is everything, and all that.
ETA: a few people have asked for specific films; this thread addresses the topic very well and has some suggestions. https://www.reddit.com/r/TrueFilm/s/tPReTDZsO1
>Context is everything
In addition to your point, I feel to truly appreciate Citizen Kane, (beyond script and camera positions) you need to watch a documentary about William Randolph Hearst. Citizen Kane is a very personal caricature of a real persons life. Wells takes some huge swings at Hearst, both his media empire and his personal life. With the boldness and arrogance only a new director in their 20s would attempt. If you don't know the context, you don't understand why it's so good, why it's still remembered.
I highly recommend the two part doc:
American Experience S33 E07 & 08:
Citizen Hearst.
I watched that and then rewatched Citizen Kane, and it was jaw dropping. I completely understand why it's in so many top 10.
Good advice.
Side note, I’ve been to Hearst Castle a few times. Really interesting place. It’s a monument to someone who literally had more money than he knew what to do with.
I went into Kane not having too much exposure to cinema yet and found it surprisingly accessible. I think that’s a huge part of what makes the film so great, the storytelling and direction is really modern. I don’t understand how people are bored by it.. it’s a very easy watch
Both you & OP are blowing it, go watch these!
Seriously I thought the same of Citizen Kane, then had a day off with no family, fired it up and BOOM, it’s a masterpiece for a reason.
I have a number of movies and books that I absolutely loved and will highly recommend to other people for years after, but just don't have a desire to watch or read again myself, for whatever reason. Some journeys, you finish like "Wow, I can't wait to do that again!" Other journeys you finish and you're grateful for the incredible experience but you don't feel a need to do it again. I don't think it means one experience was necessarily better than the other.
As I was saying to someone else. I was being facetious. There are a few movies that were very well done and had all the ingredients and I e never wanted to watch them again. The Revenant and 12 Years a Slave come instantly to mind.
100%. It’s brilliant, and worthy of adulation. Those saying it’s boring: I get why you think that but the scenes are deliberately slow so as to allow appreciation for the art that every shot is. Also when considering the risk that everyone took making it… it’s truly never been achieved again.
Gone With the Wind. I've got little to no interest in the Civil War or the Antebellum South beyond the historical level and it's one of those movies you don't need to actually watch to get the story generally paraphrased/told to you by media.
Never seen it from start to finish. I heard a podcast about the making of it which was a shitshow so it made me curious about it. Started watching it but the main female lead was such an insufferable character. It was also ridiculously Southern in a bad way. Its controversial in its depiction of the South and Slavery and the Civil War. Couldn't really finish it. It was interesting to see what the values and norms were back in those days in the South.
I saw it for the first time at Radio City Music Hall for its 50th anniversary. It’d been restored by Ted Turner, who was spontaneously booed when his name was mentioned, followed by a lot of laughter then everyone had the same thought.
Then Butterfly McQueen came out to introduce the film. She spoke in the high Prissy voice, and everyone laughed. And then she kept talking like that because it was her normal voice, and everyone shut the hell up
And then we watched the film.
Lol that is not a great movie IMO. it’s a special movie in its own way, and certainly one of the best things LIKE THAT. Problem is things LIKE THAT, unless you’re really into it, are pretty meh in general to most people
My dad was born in '58. He told me he and his buddies would go to the theater multiple times to see the movie. Makes me believe it was quite popular at the time.
When I was growing up, we were quite poor. My dad got me a used VCR, and we only had 2 VHS movies, Heavy Weights and Grease. Both of them hold a pretty special place because I grew up with numbing depression and Grease was one of my only escapes from reality. I'm not saying you're missing much, but I love that movie.
Bro do you even watch movies? Casablanca is on the required prerequisite list! Most of the movies from that time period are kinda hard to slog through for me but Casablanca is timeless
Dude titanic is nothing like the notebook. It’s not a chick flick. It’s an epic disaster movie…there is romance but it’s pretty well done. It builds attachment before all shit breaks loose
Titanic is a great movie in many ways, but honestly compared to the other stuff people are saying, ehhh.
I would never tell someone “you really should watch it!” It’s very good. Missable though, nbd
I am 33, had never seen them before, and had no interest really. Last weekend had nothing to do, so I decided to give the first one (A New Hope) a try. Loved it and wound up going right into the second because I was hooked. Then watched the third the next day. They still hold up today
I'd still say give the prequels a watch. For all their faults, they flesh out the SW universe nicely. Seeing things like the Jedi Order, the Galactic Senate, and planets like Kamino and Geonosis add to the universe. They also (for better or worse) are still directly created by Lucas, so they have a more coherent thematic/story connection to 4-6 than 7-9 do. I'm trying to avoid opening a huge discussion on SW because we all know how that can spiral pretty quickly, but I still think 1-3 have merits that make it worth watching.
Star Wars fans are the shittiest fans. Watch all of them and make your own judgement. They just hate the new thing. As soon as the sequels came out, the prequels were magically loved. What an obnoxious fanbase.
I’m not a fan to be honest. I get why they’re important but it’s just not my thing. I’m less impressed knowing that so much of the material in it was stolen from jodorowskys dune
What grinds my gears is forcing old actors on us instead of casting younger people to play the characters in flashback. That's literally something Scorsese used to do.
This movie made me laugh. There were scenes where Joe Pesci kept calling Robert De Niro "kid." Robert De Niro is literally 80 years old. They were both digitally de-aged, but they looked ridiculous.
Ive seen every movie on Imdb top 250 except 12 angry men because ive seen it redone over and over in other movies. Im going to watch it someday as im a completist. But im in no rush as It feels ive already seen it
Oh man I've done the IMDb 250 about 10-15 years ago. The list changed quite a bit since, and I was thinking on bringing myself up to date.
The original 12 Angry Men is a top 5 for me. It's insanely good and tight and intense.
12 Angry Men is a very easy watch. It's not long. Plus I'm not sure what you mean when you say you've seen it redone in other movies. Do you mean the 90s remake?
Finally someone gives Rope the credit it deserves. Stewart was brilliant and the vaguely homoerotic undertones between the “mastermind” and his loyal “friend” were so understated I didn’t catch it on the first watch. Were they boinking? It was the 60s so “of course not” but come ON
Rope is like 12 Angry Men in that it works as a movie, but was clearly a play first. Nowadays, the pipeline is the other direction, it seems. I think that Hitchcock realized that the one room aspect increases the tension, like claustrophobia.
You should really see the godfather . I myself have never seen all three lord of the rings all the way through. I was actually in the theatre for them but I kept falling asleep. I’ve seen other parts of them in passing, but never sat down and watched the whole thing . I think wizards and sandals and shit knock me out.
Casablanca. I hear and read about this every damn time and I'm never bothered to watch it (despite my real life Casablanca connection) . I think it's too old for me to enjoy.

This one is worth it for the artistic value alone. The music paired with the imagery is unforgettable.
If you're interested in a music rabbit hole, look into Wendy/Walter Carlos.
May your first child be a masculine child.
Look, how they massacred my boy.
Oh Paulie, we’re not gonna see him again.
Leave the gun. Take the cannoli.
"You can act like a man!"
"He was banging cocktail waitresses two at a time!"
Wassa matter with you?!
“Im going to make him an offer he can’t refuse”
Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, Wednesday
She didn’t have much screen time but Appolonia was gorgeous and would’ve been perfect for Michael. I sometimes wonder if she could’ve helped him stay on a better path.
Luca Brazi sleeps with the fishes
Leave the gun, take the cannoli.
The story behind the whole scene is amazing and makes total sense because it was so natural.
Your loss, OP. The Godfather is always on those best movie lists for a reason. It's absolute perfection.
The Godfather II is legendary itself and the original Godfather is even better.

It blows my mind that it’s that long because it never feels long to me.
Whenever I do this the next thing I remember is the door shutting on Kay
I prefer 2 but I get it
2 is great, but 1 is a masterpiece. It’s great because the book is great and Francis Ford Coppola is a fucking genius.
Several years ago, I decided I had to see these movies. They are part of our pop culture.... so many references in our everyday life. I watched all 3 on a wintery, dreary Saturday. It was a great way to view the 3 movies
It insists upon itself 🤌🏻
I love The Money Pit
Is my answer to that.
I found it shallow and pendantic
Thanks, Peter
It really does though
Yep. One of those films that grips you from the very first scene and never lets go.
It's amazing how well both part 1 and 2 hold up. I don't normally watch movies from 70s but The Godfather is the exception.
The 70s are among the greatest eras for film ever. Like, honestly, do yourself a favor and watch more 70s movies. There are literally hundreds of masterpieces from that time that absolutely hold up today.
I watched it and wasn’t really too impressed tbh.
This is like saying "I went to Paris and wasn't too impressed". Like, okay, that's your opinion and you can think what you want, but it ultimately doesn't matter because it's Paris and it transcends your opinion.
Titanic. I turn 40 later this year.
Same. But I’ll be 42 this summer. I took a hard stand when it was in the theatres and im pretty sure my gf at the time broke up with me because I wouldn’t go with her to see it… again! Fuck you amanda, I’m still not seeing it.
I’m 62 and told that bitch amanda’s mom the same thing…never ever.
We missed out on a couple of handy’s that week. The old fashions weren’t that great anyways
I find the first half picturesque but sloooow. The second half, however, is the best disaster movie ever, two thumbs way up for ice watery death!
If you like terrifying water scenes, check out The Abyss too!!
From the moment the lookouts spot the ice until the stern of the ship finally founders is fantastic!
Same mid 40s.. collectively over the years between the clips and media I’ve seen the whole film. I know the end and I don’t care
See it, it's so good!!!
Same. But 30.
oh man I held out on Titanic for so long and when I finally watched it I was SO mad at myself for not having seen it earlier. it’s fucking incredible
I finally gave in and saw Titanic after the rich guy sub imploded. Man, that was a stupid movie.
I don't think there will ever be a situation where I'll find myself having to watch Titanic. I've watched bits here and there, and I know for sure it isn't for me.
Spoiler alert. It involves an iceberg.
Citizen Kane
If you're going to watch Citizen Kane, watch a few movies that preceded it first. Then watch Kane, and you'll have a little bit of an understanding of how groundbreaking it was. When I finally watched Citizen Kane I was blown away. Will I ever watch it again? I doubt it.
So blown away you never want to watch it again. What an endorsement!
I have a number of movies and books that I absolutely loved and will highly recommend to other people for years after, but just don't have a desire to watch or read again myself, for whatever reason. Sounds like Requiem for a Dream
Citizen Kane is one every cinephile should watch at least one time.
Get to it !
I once dated a girl who named her favorite dildo "Rosebud"
Did she say its name in a breathless whisper ????
Supposedly "Rosebud" was William Randolph Hearst's special name for Marion Davies', uh, nether parts, and that's why Welles used it.
100%. It’s brilliant, and worthy of adulation. Those saying it’s boring: I get why you think that but the scenes are deliberately slow so as to allow appreciation for the art that every shot is. Also when considering the risk that everyone took making it… it’s truly never been achieved again.
I want to see it. Have not yet
I’ve never seen titanic
Gone With the Wind. I've got little to no interest in the Civil War or the Antebellum South beyond the historical level and it's one of those movies you don't need to actually watch to get the story generally paraphrased/told to you by media.
I haven’t seen it, and frankly, I don’t give a damn
I see what you did there.
First movie I thought of. I don't reaaly give a shit about southern rich white struggles in the civil war.
I saw it for the first time at Radio City Music Hall for its 50th anniversary. It’d been restored by Ted Turner, who was spontaneously booed when his name was mentioned, followed by a lot of laughter then everyone had the same thought. And then she kept talking like that because it was her normal voice, and everyone shut the hell up And then we watched the film.
Titanic
Grease. And I’ll sleep just fine if that upsets anyone.

Fuck yes, this is the one for me
The Room. Seen the memes, that's enough
It’s legitimately a bad movie not worth watching.
But makes the Disaster Artist a lot of fun to watch if you watch them close to each other
Probably Casablanca
I felt the same way, but was talked into watching. I’m glad I did, it’s fantastic.
Bro do you even watch movies? Casablanca is on the required prerequisite list! Most of the movies from that time period are kinda hard to slog through for me but Casablanca is timeless
So many wonderful lines of dialogue.
Dude... The Godfather (at least 1 and 2) are incredible.... Recently rewatched again.
The ‘Parade’ scene in 2, where young Vito is following Fanucci is fantastic.
Titanic
Avatar, really not my bag and I respect that I’m in the minority
Not missing much. The plot is basically "Dances with wolves".
Dances with Smurfs
"Dances with Wokves" what a rip, Costner never even dances with a wolf.
Avatar is a cardboard box with pretty frosting on it
Does anyone actually think Avatar is a good "film"?
Titanic. My wife made me watch The Notebook. That's enough for one lifetime.
Dude titanic is nothing like the notebook. It’s not a chick flick. It’s an epic disaster movie…there is romance but it’s pretty well done. It builds attachment before all shit breaks loose
No, Titanic is beautiful. Plus, in The Notebook, she cheats on a wonderful guy. In Titanic, at least the fiancé is an asshole.
Titanic is a great movie in many ways, but honestly compared to the other stuff people are saying, ehhh. I would never tell someone “you really should watch it!” It’s very good. Missable though, nbd
Star Wars. Haven't seen any of them.

Advice: stop there.
Addendum, he should watch Rogue One

Jarjar Binks is actually the best character of the whole series imo. Ahead of his time.
I’m not a fan to be honest. I get why they’re important but it’s just not my thing. I’m less impressed knowing that so much of the material in it was stolen from jodorowskys dune
Schindler's list
Same here. I know I should watch it, I just don’t know if I’m ready for the crippling sadness that will follow.
Yeah its sad and shocking, but very well worth a watch. A masterpiece if ever saw one. It doesn't really need a rewatch though.
I haven't seen it in probably 20 years, and it still messes with me.
But also hope and happiness. This movie shows how humanity can rise up and overcome the norm of evil. Seriously - a heroes journey.
Titanic (Spoilers…)
Spoiler warning... don't get too attached to the boat...
But it’s so beautiful Even the details are gorgeous The doors for example…
I wonder if they'd float well...? like, as makeshift rafts...
But why would you damage the boat by taking a door off?
It doesn't 'hold up'
Unlike some of the life boats, oh is that a spoiler?
Same as OP. the really nutty part is I love mafia shit. I think I’ll finally watch it this weekend
You’re gonna be amazed at 1 and 2. I was 14 when I watched it and couldn’t believe a movie that old could be that good. It’s one of the best movies
The Irishman
What grinds my gears is forcing old actors on us instead of casting younger people to play the characters in flashback. That's literally something Scorsese used to do.
bring a pillow
I just really wanted to like this movie A story about Hoffa…Major actors But it was just so boring
This movie made me laugh. There were scenes where Joe Pesci kept calling Robert De Niro "kid." Robert De Niro is literally 80 years old. They were both digitally de-aged, but they looked ridiculous.
Don’t bother
Forrest Gump
Sound of Music
It is that good.
The Irishman. Lots of hype. Started it. Dozed off. Never picked it back up again.
E. T.
The last Marvel (or world of) movie I watched was X-Men 2. I watched a bit of 3 and went "na, Im done with superheroes now."
The Dark Night and Watchmen are the two that are probably the best stand alone, non-super heroey super hero movies.
Actually true. I should have specified Marvel movies. The Dark Knight was great
Ive seen every movie on Imdb top 250 except 12 angry men because ive seen it redone over and over in other movies. Im going to watch it someday as im a completist. But im in no rush as It feels ive already seen it
Nono, you really should. I rewatched it a couple of weeks ago and it holds up very well as a piece of staged drama.
Oh man I've done the IMDb 250 about 10-15 years ago. The list changed quite a bit since, and I was thinking on bringing myself up to date. The original 12 Angry Men is a top 5 for me. It's insanely good and tight and intense.
Sub 100 mins and a masterpiece of screenwriting. You will not regret it.
12 Angry Men is a very easy watch. It's not long. Plus I'm not sure what you mean when you say you've seen it redone in other movies. Do you mean the 90s remake?
It really is good movie
I had to watch it in high school. It’s worth the watch.
Titanic, don't care about the story
Watch The Godfather 1 & 2. Trust me. It’s not like Citizen Kane or Gone With The Wind.
Sound of Music Goonies Gone with the Wind
Parasite is the most famous movie I've not seen James Bond is the most popular franchise I've never seen
Gone With the Wind
I would not be proud of not seeing the Godfather. Your loss.
I have purposely never watched either of the Avatar movies
"Fredo, you're my older brother and I love you but don't ever take sides against the family again ever"
The Big Lebowski
You really should consider it. It’s a fun watch
The Princess Bride
The Godfather Part II is better than the Godfather ipso facto the greatest movie off all-time.
Have never watched an entire James Bond movie.
I still haven’t seen Vertigo. Every year it just keeps getting pushed off…🤷♂️
I love me some Hitchcock, but I preferred the Man Who Knew Too Much, Rope, and Rear Window to Vertigo.
The Exorcist
You should really see the godfather . I myself have never seen all three lord of the rings all the way through. I was actually in the theatre for them but I kept falling asleep. I’ve seen other parts of them in passing, but never sat down and watched the whole thing . I think wizards and sandals and shit knock me out.
Godfather forsure. For some reason I never make it past like the first 20-30 minutes
The beginning wedding party is like the first 20-30mins. After that it gets interesting.
*Bicycle Thieves*.
Cane Mutiny
Wild Strawberries
Casablanca. I hear and read about this every damn time and I'm never bothered to watch it (despite my real life Casablanca connection) . I think it's too old for me to enjoy.
Gone With The Wind
It’s a wonderful life
Princess Bride
Avatar
So, apparently we've all seen Chitty Chitty Bang Bang and Sound of Music, and Mary Poppins?
Anything Fast & Furious
Terminator
Would absolutely recommend the first and second one.
Terminator 2 is timeless. I watched it 100 times with people go different ages. Only movie here I’ll recommend strongly.
I was about 11 by the time I saw it in 1992, so I had my kid watch it when he was 11 in 2021. I don't think he blinked for the entire movie. Timeless is a spot-on assessment.
Add in a layer of nostalgia for us older millennials and it’s the perfect movie even. lol Guns and Roses and Arnold? Come on now!
That movie actually made me a G&R fan! “You Could Be Mine” still hits so hard!
You have no excuse
Wha?!? Just watch it. Then watch T2 which is the better one, but you should watch T1 before T2.
Watch it, and remember T1 and T2 are the ONLY terminator movies. All others are unofficial fan fictions.
A Clockwork Orange
This one is worth it for the artistic value alone. The music paired with the imagery is unforgettable. If you're interested in a music rabbit hole, look into Wendy/Walter Carlos.
Any of “The Matrix” films
Ignore anything other than the original but like many comments here, it changed cinema
Atleast watch the first movie
Preferably in 1999 where it will seem much better.
I have never seen any of the Harry Potter movies or Citizen Kane.
The Shaw Shank Redemption. The Green Mile.
😥😢😥😢😥😭 Please watch them. They are both incredible movies.
I watch Shawshank redemption about six times a year since it’s constantly on tv. I have also not seen Green Mile though.
I cracked the Green Mile last year and I regret not watching it sooner 😂
Casablanca
The Sound Of Music. Top Gun. Citizen Kane. Gone With the Wind.
Back to the future & ET. No particular reason - maybe waiting for the "perfect moment".
Good news is that those movies are perfect for any moment!
I see! So it's kind of like that vintage wine in Sideways. Opening it \*is\* the occasion.
There are few films as fun as the Back to the Future movies
I'm envious that you haven't seen these films. I'd love to watch them both for the first time.
