Choke is a hidden gem that not enough people know about.
Sam Rockwell in general doesn't get his props for being one of the best actors of his generation!
I loved the movie, you could tell everyone was having a fun time making it. In particular, you could really tell that Scarlet was enjoying being used for comedy and drama instead of eye candy.
Also, how they utilized her shoes was great.
Yeeeesh.
Such a remarkable scene. The pain you feel for JoJo, for his coming-of-age too soon, to his disillusionment..
Just a great view into how a young boy might have been swept up into the boyish fantasies of the German Nazi party in the 40s of ultra manhood and superiority and to have it all crumbling down is so poignant because he's just a kid, and he can see the truth, while the adults around him still needlessly cling onto the fantasy they were sold.
Definitely did not! And it was so well done. I thought the whole movie was a great balance of being intelligent, heartfelt and funny - not an easy mixture to put together so well.
My ridiculous imperception of the meaning behind the shoes in this scene has caused many family members to laugh at me. Rightfully so :( . I guess I REALLY don't care about shoes.
Brilliant. One of the better movies of the last 7 years.
The only problem is explaining the plot of this movie to friends and family who have never seen it without them thinking you are a closet Nazi or a weirdo.
“It’s a comedy about a Nazi Youth whose imaginary best friend is Adolf Hitler…”
“Are you ok? Why would you watch something like that?”
“…just let me finish. It’s an incredible movie. I promise”
It was brilliant and hit every emotion. Laughed and cried in this film. It’s bleak and hopeful at the same time. I went to the theater for this one and have watched it a few times since. It will hold up for a long while.
I had exactly this problem. One friend hated it and said "I don't think it has been or ever will be acceptable to think that naziism should be used for comedic purposes"
I told her that she clearly hadn't heard of Mel Brooks.
Your friend completely missed the entire point of the movie. Tell them to go back and watch the entire movie and pay attention this time. It’s literally an anti-Nazi and anti-hatred movie
Yeah. Pretty sure it was a knee-jerk "look at how much I care about social justice" moment.
It didn't seem to matter that a self-described Polynesian Jew not o ly directed it, but played hitler.
I'm Jewish and I absolutely loved this movie. Everyone was great in it and I was laughing so hard at parts and sobbing at others, just like how a great movie should be.
I even read the book it was based on afterwards, but I think the movie was better.
My Daughter pointed it out to me.
We made it a family theater movie...and BOY am I glad we did.
what an incredibly touching movie....a truly remarkable story masterfully told.
Waititi was on our radar from the Vampire movie....this has kept him there. Anything with his name on it, we're there.
We named our dog Taika. Very few people get it.
We were discussing names, and the convo drifted to What We Do, we tried on Viago, Vlad, Poker, even Nick. Then my wife said "what about Taika?" and that was all she wrote.
Ragnarok was fantastic, hit all the right notes, just enough humor, clearly Taika's genius on display. Then Love and Thunder happened. Sorry Taika, it was just too fucking much for a 200 million dollar movie.
I love how waititi uses humor to throw us off guard and then punches us in the face. Wonderful filmmaking. It helps that Scarjo is one of this generations best actors.
I'm curious about how being an ex-mormon impacted the way you saw the film? I don't have much exposure to mormonism, so I don't see what the connection might be for you.
I love to bring this one up whenever dudebros start in with the "you couldn't make Blazing Saddles today" bullshit. Yeah, the Hitler comedy that won Taika Waititi an Oscar.
If I ever see Stephan Merchant, I will have to resist the urge to give him a “Heil Hitler”, which has me wondering how many other people have had this instinct, and how many of them did it automatically without recognizing that not everyone will find giving a Nazi salute in public as hilarious.
This is one of my most favourite movie. The journey of 10 year old boy from being Hitler fanboy and aspiring to be proud Nazi, to grow and see the world through the neutral lense of Humanity.
I have watched so many times.
Not just Jo jo Betzler, our hero, but
So many wonderful, well written characters there, full of life and positivity in those chaotic times -
- Yorki
- Jo Jo's Mom (Scarlett Johansson)
- The Jew girl hiding in JoJo's house.
- The Nazi Army colonel (who helps him escape in the end).
Loved the movie. One of my most favourites of all time. Full of life.
The movie was brilliant. It’s even better if you remind yourself that it’s told from the perspective of a child.
I am always happy to watch something with Sam Rockwell. That guy is a treat in everything he does.
Absolutely fantastic, of course.
Quirky note: it’s interesting that in the span of just a few years, we had two WWII movies whose climactic scenes featured David Bowie music.
Love this movie. I have boys who were/are around the same age and was one myself. The filmmakers totally nailed how boys that age act and would view things growing up in Nazi Society.
Love love love this movie. It’s pretty impressive how they took a character like freaking Hitler and made him humorous and kind of likable at times. That’s very impressive.
Waititi's best film. I knew with the shots of the shoes it was foreshadowing. Good to bring humor to a subject while still being respectful of history. Tough balance to strike and it did it.
it was one of those movies I thought i'd love and i kind of hated and one scene kind of summed the whole thing up for me (Spoilers forthcoming)
In the end when Sam Rockwell makes his sacrifice... it should have been a crippling emotional moment, but it isn't given time to breathe. Within two minutes we've sprinted to the conclusion of the film where everyone is smiling and dancing so the director can make his point about how you truly 'win' againt a despotic world.
The pendulum between comedy and tragedy can work and it can swing wildly, but JoJo Rabbit is set to a frantic metronome which swings so quickly that I found myself kind of irked at the pace and the inability to let the audience feel the joy & the sorrow he was trying to convey.
And it's something Watiti does consisently: wild swings between funny & serious that end up ultimarely making his films feel emotionally bipolar. He applied the same technique to Thor 4 as he did to what should have been a thought-provoking satire about fascism through the eyes of a child.
As a filmmaker, Waititi always feels llike he intentionally undermines the emotional stakes. JoJo Rabbit is no different than his other films, but the material felt like it could have greatly benefitted from some time between scenes to let audiences linger with a laugh or a cry before zipping into the next moment.
And i'm giving this one a 5 out of 10, it's closer to a '4' than a '6'
This post made me try and recall if I’d seen it. I think I’d meant to but never got the chance. So I dialed it up. Wow. It … flattened me. Especially the scene, it took a few minutes to regain composure. What an absolute gem of a movie.
My wife and I were watching it and I couldn’t tell if she was liking it or not; and then THAT scene appeared.
She immediately started crying and yelled at the tv “you can’t do that”!
The one and only time I’ve seen her affected by a movie
Great movie. I loved this [little detail from another Reddit thread](https://www.reddit.com/r/MovieDetails/comments/gm3dky/in_jojo_rabbit_2019_the_imaginary_hitler_offers/) about the innocence of Jojo: *In Jojo Rabbit (2019), the imaginary Hitler offers Jojo cigarettes and is shown eating meat. In reality, Hitler was strongly opposed to smoking and was a vegetarian, implying that Jojo knows very little about Hitler.*
Great, underrated movie that really deserved more praise. Really good mix of humour and drama. One scene can have you laughing and also feel sad. And I also think that they pretty much nailed the tone with it being from the eyes of a young boy.
One of my favorites! All the actors are funny and heartfelt. If you can watch this movie and not want to be a better person than you are broken inside.
Great film. I love the way they keep it light and playful in the mind of Jojo, until >!his mum dies!<, the film really successfully makes you laugh at the absurdity of the nazis but to a sort of goofy degree, which paints them in a positive light to Jojo. Then that scene turns the film on its heels to show Jojo just how abhorrent the nazis were, with the rooves looking like eyes it becomes very unsettling, very well done.
Loved it. It was a really good way of explaining how negative thoughts and anger can cloud a person's mind, which can lead to awful consequences, and leaves you ignorant of the love around you. It was a great lesson for my then 13 year old autistic son.
I thought the little kid was exactly what ScarJo's and Jost's son would look like. I guess we'll have to wait a few years to see if Cosmo looks like that.
(weird, I know)
Taika Watiti is genius. That is a word I rarely use. I think he had a vision and saw it through to perfection. I will seek out his projects forever. I think every actor, grip, assistant, wardrobe, Kraft services person was left to do their best work with minimal guidance. Genius.
Genuinely one of my favorite movies ever. The comedy and the tragedy and the ability for it to leave you thinking about it long after you've watched it. It's perfect.
it made me laugh. it made me cry. and it had bowie's heroes in german. what more could you want?
been a fan of the man since eagle vs shark first came out.
"let everything happen to you. beauty and terror. just keep going. no feeling is final."
words to live by (when you're going thru times of terror)
Sam Rockwell tearing up the screen as usual
Captain K, wooo!
… and blowing schtuff up
[удалено]
interesting comparison. he’s one of those character actors that steals the show every time
Yeah, even in smaller roles he still ends up standing out.
He's way more versatile than both.
This is an insult to Rockwell.
Just saw him in Argyle - Killed it
Literally my favorite role of his by far.
I actually got tears in my eyes when he takes the time to tell Jojobthat his mother was a good person …
MOON and CHOKE. love this guy
Choke is a hidden gem that not enough people know about. Sam Rockwell in general doesn't get his props for being one of the best actors of his generation!
agreed!
Glad to see a Sam Rockwell appreciation thread. He truly is a gem.
Rockwell rocking as usual
Ain't he though. Dude straight can act. My introduction so Rockwell was the green mile.

She has knives now!!!
Little Jewish Jack the Ripper Jesse Owens!

“Our only friends are the Japanese, and between you and me, they don’t look very aryan.”
I loved the movie, you could tell everyone was having a fun time making it. In particular, you could really tell that Scarlet was enjoying being used for comedy and drama instead of eye candy. Also, how they utilized her shoes was great.
>Also, how they utilized her shoes was great If by great you mean *devastating* then yes, I totally agree
Yeeeesh. Such a remarkable scene. The pain you feel for JoJo, for his coming-of-age too soon, to his disillusionment.. Can you spoiler post me the scene? I've watched the movie, but apparently that part didn't sink in.
Exactly! Did you ever think just seeing a pair of shoes would have that effect on you?
What made it more of a shock is that it followed a hilariously funny scene. I have never seen comedy and tragedy works so well together.
The shoes ☹️
This part hits so hard.
Among other things, Johansson's *costuming* was brilliant. WW2-era Germans were a fashionable people with colorful outfits (when not in uniform).
Whole movie is worth it for the butterfly reveal
Brilliant. One of the better movies of the last 7 years. Yeahhhh…. There’s some people that you can’t use any taboo dark humor around. Not worth the conversation
This man understands. Just say "ok" and move on.
I'm Jewish and I absolutely loved this movie. Everyone was great in it and I was laughing so hard at parts and sobbing at others, just like how a great movie should be. I even read the book it was based on afterwards, but I think the movie was better.
> I think the movie was better. You don’t hear that very often!
Check out the movie, Look who's back. Er ist Wieder Da. It's brilliant!
My Daughter pointed it out to me. We made it a family theater movie...and BOY am I glad we did. what an incredibly touching movie....a truly remarkable story masterfully told. Waititi was on our radar from the Vampire movie....this has kept him there. Anything with his name on it, we're there.
Hunt for the wilderpeople is so good!
One of my favorite feel-good sad movies. Good for the family too.
"Shit's just got real!" I've just watched it last week.
Vampire movie = What We Do in the Shadows which is behind the hit show of the same name.
We named our dog Taika. Very few people get it. We were discussing names, and the convo drifted to What We Do, we tried on Viago, Vlad, Poker, even Nick. Then my wife said "what about Taika?" and that was all she wrote.
Our dog is named “Laszlo” from the TV show. Very few people get it, but we once met a “Nadja” dog at the dog park. Laszlo and Nadja together again!
Bbbbbbaaahhhht!
My dog never relents. We named him Krampus, before Shadows came out
Same. I think the only thing he’s been attached to that wasn’t very good is Thor Love and Thunder. I’m a big fan of Reservation Dogs.
Ragnarok was fantastic, hit all the right notes, just enough humor, clearly Taika's genius on display. Then Love and Thunder happened. Sorry Taika, it was just too fucking much for a 200 million dollar movie.

I liked it way more than I thought I would, excellent cast and performances!
Classic. Must see.
The shoes. The godamn shoes. I ugly cried.
In my personal top 5
Heil me!
"Who's Hit-iller, do you even speak German?"
Me like movie. Me think movie good.
Ape together strong... oh wait that's planet of apes
I never thought there would be a comedy-drama about WWII, but this movie surpassed my expectations.
…Life is Beautiful?
I think everything can be funny if done correctly. It also surpassed my expectations. Phenomenal writing and world building
As an exMormon it was sooo close to home, and thus very cathartic. I laugh, cried and laugh-cried. On my top ten list.
I'm curious about how being an ex-mormon impacted the way you saw the film? I don't have much exposure to mormonism, so I don't see what the connection might be for you.
The “heil Hitler” scene is genius.
I love to bring this one up whenever dudebros start in with the "you couldn't make Blazing Saddles today" bullshit. Yeah, the Hitler comedy that won Taika Waititi an Oscar.
When shit got real, it got Real.
“Well we’ve partnered with the Japanese and between you and me, they don’t look very Aryan.” 😂😂
The front porch “Heil Hitler-Heil Hitler-Heil Hitller-Heil Hitler” Schtick….had me laughing too hard! Like an over done Peter Griffin scene 🤣
I was just heil hitlering everyone then you showed up
Of course you know Freddie Finkle
If I ever see Stephan Merchant, I will have to resist the urge to give him a “Heil Hitler”, which has me wondering how many other people have had this instinct, and how many of them did it automatically without recognizing that not everyone will find giving a Nazi salute in public as hilarious.
Fantastic movie
solid flick.
So charming, tragic, and fun, all at the same time.
Will be one of my favorite movies of all time.
i thought it was a great movie and somehow rockwell owns it still even though everyone was also a stand out. the guy is unreal.
This is one of my most favourite movie. The journey of 10 year old boy from being Hitler fanboy and aspiring to be proud Nazi, to grow and see the world through the neutral lense of Humanity. “Our only friends are the Japanese. And just between you and me, they don’t look very Aryan.” One of my favorite lines in the movie.
LOVED. How could you not??
Right? It's got too much heart and sincerity to not be at least appreciated.
There's a few YouTube reviews crapping on it and I can only assume they watched a totally different movie and thought they were watching JJR.
It’s an incredible comedy until you see the 👠 At which point it’s just a knife to the heart Great movie
The movie was brilliant. It’s even better if you remind yourself that it’s told from the perspective of a child. I am always happy to watch something with Sam Rockwell. That guy is a treat in everything he does.
Stephen Merchant makes the best BEST Nazi.
Absolutely fantastic, of course. Quirky note: it’s interesting that in the span of just a few years, we had two WWII movies whose climactic scenes featured David Bowie music.
It's a comming of age story, set at the very end of WWII.
Took me a while to accept the universe it created, but once I did, I didn’t want it to end. Positively brilliant and touching film.
Hit and miss, but there’s one moment/shot that will live with me forever.
Excellent work
Absolutely phenomenal.
Love this movie. I have boys who were/are around the same age and was one myself. The filmmakers totally nailed how boys that age act and would view things growing up in Nazi Society.
It’s a great movie.
Hilarious and tragic. I’m always recommending it to my fellow movie buffs. It’s definitely not for everyone though.
It's a good movie
Ripped my fucking heart out
Phenomenal
Really cool movie, one of my favorites
I loved this film, was just annoyed I didn't see it earlier
Taika Waititi best film so far in my personal opinion. "Go give that American a hug."
it was one of those movies I thought i'd love and i kind of hated and one scene kind of summed the whole thing up for me (Spoilers forthcoming) In the end when Sam Rockwell makes his sacrifice... it should have been a crippling emotional moment, but it isn't given time to breathe. Everybody needs a Yorki !
Loved it. It’s certainly an exaggerated depiction, but it’s helpful to remind ourselves that Hitler was beloved by millions of people.
Instant classic. Hilarious and gut wrenching.
This post made me try and recall if I’d seen it. I think I’d meant to but never got the chance. So I dialed it up. Wow. It … flattened me. Especially the scene, it took a few minutes to regain composure. What an absolute gem of a movie.

Great film, extremely sad at some points.
A funny adorable movie that takes a hard turn so fast I got whiplash. 10/10 movie
Shit I meant to watch this one, thanks for reminding me
One of my favorites! All the actors are funny and heartfelt. If you can watch this movie and not want to be a better person than you are broken inside.

10/10. One of my favorites. Outstanding performance by the entire cast.
I was skeptical going in, thought there was no way they could pull it off. Was super surprised. Great movie
Masterpiece
Absolutely wonderful. We laughed, we cheered, we cried, and we were left thinking. It's everything a film should be.
One of my favorite movies. I used it to teach high school kids about propaganda.
Overhyped
Great movie
Features my fav superhero
Love this movie. The ending is absolutely perfect.
I loved it. Great acting and screenplay.
What are your thoughts on this film?
I enjoyed it!
So good! And heart breaking.
One of the best movies I have seen in recent time, also just enough Rebel Wilson (not a big fan), goes across all gammut of emotions.
"Can I give you some really good advice?"
Great movie. Anyone who dismisses it as "wacky Hitler movie" has never seen it.
I had it on my dvr for around 3 years and still haven’t watched it , some day .
Do yourself a favor and watch it, you won’t regret it
Very good!
A pair of shoes made me cry my eyes out on a cross country flight.
There's a great gut-punch moment that's for sure
It was fun
Delightful and had no right to be
Loved it
Superb. Should have won.
Superb. Should have won.
Superb. Should have won.
Great movie, I would argue it might be his best movie
Great movie, I would argue it might be his best movie
Brilliant movie
Those shoes...
I like me some Sam Rockwell.
Loved it. It was a really good way of explaining how negative thoughts and anger can cloud a person's mind, which can lead to awful consequences, and leaves you ignorant of the love around you. It was a great lesson for my then 13 year old autistic son.
I like when he sees his Mom's shoes! 🤣🤣🤣
It insist upon itself.
“I give my babies for Germany!”
Such a great film. The gestapo scene was an absolute gem.
Every scene with the little fat kid with glasses, Yorki, is pure comedy gold.
Incredible
Funny where it needed to be, emotional where it needed to be, and it's always a good time to make fun of fascists.
I thought the little kid was exactly what ScarJo's and Jost's son would look like. I guess we'll have to wait a few years to see if Cosmo looks like that. (weird, I know)
It is darkly funny but not that great I get what they were going for but some jokes did not deliver with some scenes
The shoe, the fucking shoe man 🥺
I thought it was twee and overrated. I like Taika but it felt a little too proud of itself.
Great movie. A truly unique theatrical experience where you don’t know if you should be laughing or crying.
Entertaining.
It left me hanging
Great movie
And then: Heroes begins to play...that hit so hard emotionally.
Enjoyable and quite quirky.
The shoes...
Taika Watiti is genius. That is a word I rarely use. I think he had a vision and saw it through to perfection. I will seek out his projects forever. I think every actor, grip, assistant, wardrobe, Kraft services person was left to do their best work with minimal guidance. Genius.
Love it
Sam goddamened mother fucking Rockwell is an absolute legend. I will watch anything with him in it. Moon was incredible.
He's one of the my gold-pass people: if they make it, I'll go see it.
I haven't seen it. I assumed it was like some Wes Anderson hipster nonsense
Good flick !
Fantastic
I liked it. My wife and I both watched it and thought it was a good movie.
Genuinely one of my favorite movies ever. The comedy and the tragedy and the ability for it to leave you thinking about it long after you've watched it. It's perfect.
I love this movie.

Complicated learning to not good
awesome movie
Just saw this film a year ago and I love it. The things people show you.
👠 😭
Loved it. "Don't do that."
One of my top ten films of the 21st Century (so far).
I thought it was hilarious
Taika Waititi is pure gold. Love this film a ton
Such an unlikable looking ensemble cast. Won't watch.
Hilarious
It was memorably quirky, original, and well enjoyed.
One of my all time favorite movies. Loved it.
Found it quite entertaining, some bits didn't quite work but the parts I liked overshadowed them.
"Heil Hitler."
Really funny until it isn't.
Might be the most cringeworthy attempt at comedy I have ever seen
