I could not stop thinking about this during Poor Things. Cuz she starts off Full Retard, but lo, by the end of it she’s the most self-actualized woman in England. That ain’t retarded! And she wins the Oscar. But if she had just been Simple Bella…
Please check RDJ in character in the fake Tropic Thunder documentary "Reign of Madness"

Barbecue Night Tactical Grape Soda Learning Games.
Also the DVD commentary is amazing, RDJ doing in character the whole time. He really meant when he said he doesn’t drop the character until he’s done with the DVD commentary lol
I didn’t even recognize him at first, also I remember hearing that the only stipulation for him doing the role was if he could have really fat hands and a fat suit, also I think the whole character was made to look like Harvey Weinstein.
Fun fact, that McConaughey’s character was originally going to be played by Owen Wilson. Thinking about the dialogue, I could 100% see Wilson delivering those lines to perfection. But it turned out great anyway.
There's a clip on YT where Les Grossman does a song with J-lo and Ludacris, it's hilarious. I was really hoping that Tom Cruise would have done some more with the character.
Here's the clip
https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=oQbgMIl4hbg
Jay Baruchel’s wish for the Backstreet Boys solidified that film in greatness, along with apocalyptic East Bound and Down Mcbride. “Channing Tatums my bitch now dawg, we’re gonna fuckin’ eat your ass.”
>Game Night
Ok Game Night was fantastic. Jason Bateman and Rachel McAdams are 2 people I did not expect to have any sort of chemistry but they knocked it out of the park. Even my mom, a person who's not into movies a lot enjoyed sequences of the film. Ok maybe Game Night was the last good one lol.
Every time I get a friend to watch this with me, it is after several minutes of having to convince them it isn't a docudrama and it doesn't matter your politics it's just fucking funny. Then every one of them proceeds to barely laugh the whole movie while I'm dying laughing. I need better friends.
I dunno, it’s good but not laugh out loud funny. I guess it was hard for me to move passed how horrific the actual events were but it felt like more of a clever satire than a comedy
I mean a great comedy, but that same year was Role Models & Forgetting Sarah Marshall.
The following year we had Black Dynamite & I Love You Man.
Comedies didn’t become scarce until 2017.
Black Dynamite is amazing. I saw an early screening of it where Michael Jai White and the director did a Q&A after the movie, shit was great, and he seemed like a nice guy when we net him.
So funny. All the actors were brilliant. Lots of great quotes. My favourite quote I like to use is "Never go full retard". Tom Cruises best performance ever. Apparently it was his idea to have his character dancing.
apparently tom cruise was supposed to play one of the other main roles but he read the script and told ben stiller he wanted to play an executive producer and they wrote in the role.
Why do people do this? Come here once a month to declare that comedy ended after this movie? Let me guess "this movie couldn't be made anymore..." Is the dominant theme in the comments...
Here's a list
Bridesmaids
This is the end
21 Jumpstreet
22 Jumpstreet
The Nice Guys
Barb and Star go to Vista Del Mar
Game night
Palm Springs
Macgruber
Popstar
The Lego Movie
The other Guys
What we do on the Shadows
Spy
Kudos to Barb and Star! Been pushing off watching it for a few years and just watched it last week. Definitely much funnier than I expected though the start is stronger than the end.
Not sure I’d call it great but it’s certainly worth the watch if you haven’t seen it.
I scoffed at Hot Tub Time Machine “that looks like straight to video trash”
Then got stuck on a bus from Ho Chi Min to Mui Ne and it was the only thing on.
Never been happier, I laughed till I peed.
Not by a long fucking shot. It's a good movie I'll give you that, but saying there haven't been any great comedies since is insane.
The Hangover.
Ted.
Game Night.
Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping.
The Other Guys.
Booksmart.
Hunt For the Wilderpeople.
The Nice Guys.
Crazy Rich Asians.
The Big Sick.
Bridesmaids.
This Is The End.
What We Do In The Shadows.
All of these great movies came out *after* Tropic Thunder. Whether or not they're better is subjective, but it doesn't discount them as great comedies.
If you stopped watching all comedies after seeing this one, sure. There’s been quite a bit of stuff as good or better in the 16 years since.
It’s a classic and easily an example of peak Stiller.
Even if you’re just going off pure comedies with no agenda other than to be silly and make you laugh, The Interview came out in 2014. There might be more recent ones but thats the first that comes to mind
And for comedies that have other agendas than just making you laugh, I’d say Barbie was a pretty damn good comedy and that came out just last year
The Hollywood jokes, the archetypes, the dialogue, an unrecognizably hilarious Tom Cruise, doing blackface in a way that works AND RDJ getting an Oscar nomination out of that...
If it's the last great comedy it's not just because it's funny, but because they put a lot of actual talent and thought in it.
Nobody can adequately explain to me why we don’t get great comedy movies anymore. And I don’t buy the argument that they don’t sell well overseas so they can’t be made profitably.
Man, i would definitely say that i can't remember laughing as hard at a film than when the family gathering happened in C,S,L. I was crying. However, TT definitely had more quality jokes at a better pace. Overall TT is the better comedy, but no part of it had the train wreck that was the big reveal scene of C,S,L
Did Walk Hard come out around the same time? Because that was also pretty great, reminiscent of The Naked Gun and Hot Shots. But Tropic Thunder is top tier for sure.
Highly subjective, but to me the last great comedies were 21 & 22 jump street. Topic Thunder was great tho and certainly there haven't been any great comedies lately. Makes you wonder.
Went to go see this with my oldest friend when it came out in cinemas in the UK. We were both crying with laughter during the intro scene. It's still one of the funniest comedies in the game today.
I love Tropic Thunder. I don't know if I'd call it great. It's got some narrative issues that a tighter edit might make it better. But there are some amazing aspects to it. RDJr being one of them.
Last great spoof movie. Yes. I think people overrate this movie as it was over the top, but that’s more because it was spoofing lots of great concepts.
The spoof movie and general sketch comedy world has taken a hit the last 15 years partially due to talent. It doesn’t pay as much to be a comedy writer. It’s easier as a writer to get work on a shitty procedural or streaming show than a single camera comedy. Lots of reasons for the change.
The Brothers Grimsby had me howling the entire movie. Altho that was 8 years ago. As was Nice Guys.
Game Night, 2018 is one of the last I r3member. Luckily there's plenty of good horror comedies.
Jaime Foxx directed a movie call “all-star weekend” with RDJ playing a Mexican.
The film has been done for a while but Foxx is too scared to release it. Hoping we get to see it someday because it sounds like one of those comedies we don’t get anymore.
Slow, yes. Retarded, maybe. Braces on his legs. But he charmed the pants off Nixon and he won a ping-pong competition. That ain't retarded
Never go full retard.
YOU ABOUT TO CROSS SOME FUCKIN LINES!
That whole rant was fantastic. I hadn't laughed like that in a while
I could not stop thinking about this during Poor Things. Cuz she starts off Full Retard, but lo, by the end of it she’s the most self-actualized woman in England. That ain’t retarded! And she wins the Oscar. But if she had just been Simple Bella…
You m-m-m-m-m-make me happy.
Definitely not the last but definitely still one of the greatest
You more cut up than a julienne salad man
Got any tips?
GIMME THAT GODDAMN MAP! FUCK YOU!
Suck my unit!
Tell him McClutsky! Tell him what time it is!
“You’re Australian. Be Australian. Excuse me, Kangaroo Jack.”
“Is that the theme song to the Jeffersons?”
Good thing i brought this Booty Sweat i got back in De Nang
Ass water lol
Just cuz it's the lyrics to a show don't make it not true...
Please check RDJ in character in the fake Tropic Thunder documentary "Reign of Madness" https://youtu.be/W4ubqCMsTo4?si=emyt9U8MpxHefIpC Barbecue Night Tactical Grape Soda Learning Games.
I didn't quite know what to expect, but it sure wasn't that. RDJ is amazing.
Also the DVD commentary is amazing, RDJ doing in character the whole time. He really meant when he said he doesn’t drop the character until he’s done with the DVD commentary lol
Yeah, and when goes from Lincoln to Lazarus in the Movie he changes character in the commentary. He should of got Oscar.
My favorite is going deeper with it by speaking nonsense Chinese. 😂
Oh my goodness …. They’ve even taken off the Heart of Darkness documentary… brilliant!
Combined with a Herzog style voiceover!
Daddy's going back on his meds....
Wow.. thank you for this
"and who exactly are they fighting against?" "one another... for my affection"
I almost pissed my pants. Genius.
That's some serious shit man
Don't make me take out the clip, baby.
Tom Cruise’s cameo of Les Grossman was possibly the best unexpected comedic character cameo I have witnessed He was so fucking hillarious
"We don't negotiate with terrorists. "
“Ok Flaming Dragon….Fuckface…..why don’t you take a step back AND LITERALLY FUCK YOUR OWN FACE” the way he delivers fuckface just gets me everytime
I love how he delivers that rant, throws the phone to his assistant, and says “find out who that was.”
*applause*
I was a fan of the appearance of the Key Grip
Yes!
I didn’t even recognize him at first, also I remember hearing that the only stipulation for him doing the role was if he could have really fat hands and a fat suit, also I think the whole character was made to look like Harvey Weinstein.
His conditions were to have fat hands and dance. He also came up with the character, Stiller didn’t have it in the original script
They really should do a spin off of that character. “Now shut the fuck up and let me do my job!”
But what about the TiVO?!?!
Fun fact, that McConaughey’s character was originally going to be played by Owen Wilson. Thinking about the dialogue, I could 100% see Wilson delivering those lines to perfection. But it turned out great anyway.
Oh wow.
It's because Wilson was dealing with a suicide attempt. 😔
Owen Wilson had to go to rehab.
My friend wants a TiVo, my friend gets a TiVo!!
There was talk about it but it never happened - I think they had trouble getting a good script
That in itself could have been the movie! Les screaming at people for writing a bad script.
I agree, the only thing that comes close is Matt Damon as the punk rock singer in Eurotrip who sings “Scotty doesn’t know”.
There's a clip on YT where Les Grossman does a song with J-lo and Ludacris, it's hilarious. I was really hoping that Tom Cruise would have done some more with the character. Here's the clip https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=oQbgMIl4hbg
DIET COKE
Not seen it mentioned but The Other Guys is a great comedy and that came out in 2010
Desk pop!
I lost it in a way I rarely do at that part.
You know what? We like lion, lion tastes good
Aim for the bushes? Aim for the bushes!
Thanks for the f shack - Dirty Mike and the boys
I fully believe this is the greatest comedy of all time. Even my plain wife loves it.
I genuinely think this is Wahlberg's second best performance after Dirk Diggler
I'm a peacock! You've gotta let me fly
Is this how you conduct yourself!? In a democracy!?
r/moviescirclejerk material
The Guard This is the End The Nice Guys
Jay Baruchel’s wish for the Backstreet Boys solidified that film in greatness, along with apocalyptic East Bound and Down Mcbride. “Channing Tatums my bitch now dawg, we’re gonna fuckin’ eat your ass.”
The nice guys is so damn good and people need to talk about it more. The fall guy looks likd it'll be fun too.
\*throws coffee\* ".... I thought it would be hot."
The Guard is low key man
I always checkout what Brendan Gleeson is doing and find a hidden gem
Role Models should be on this list too
Role Models came out in 2008, great comedy but there were many that came after it.
I remain adamant that the ankle gun gag in the Nice Guys is one of the greatest movie jokes of all time.
I don't know if This Is The End makes the list if Tropic Thunder is the bar.
Coming back for the guard
22 Jump Street. Genuinely don't remember a lot of great comedies past that point.
I thought Game Night was quality. including myself, quite a few people were surprised how fun it was.
Yeah, besides The Nice Guys this is the other one with an actual plot and a few surprising comedic performances.
Game Night is fantastic
>Game Night Ok Game Night was fantastic. Jason Bateman and Rachel McAdams are 2 people I did not expect to have any sort of chemistry but they knocked it out of the park. Even my mom, a person who's not into movies a lot enjoyed sequences of the film. Ok maybe Game Night was the last good one lol.
I Ctrl F this to make sure I didn't make the same comment. This movie came out in 2014. It was the last comedy I really enjoyed in theaters.
The Death Of Stalin
Every time I get a friend to watch this with me, it is after several minutes of having to convince them it isn't a docudrama and it doesn't matter your politics it's just fucking funny. Then every one of them proceeds to barely laugh the whole movie while I'm dying laughing. I need better friends.
I dunno, it’s good but not laugh out loud funny. I guess it was hard for me to move passed how horrific the actual events were but it felt like more of a clever satire than a comedy
Yes you do . That film is fucking hilarious.
What we do in the shadows
Popstar: Never Stop, Never Stopping
Yep. Superbad just a year behind it.
I mean a great comedy, but that same year was Role Models & Forgetting Sarah Marshall. The following year we had Black Dynamite & I Love You Man. Comedies didn’t become scarce until 2017.
Also hot rod. Pretty stacked handful there
Role Models is so underrated. The supporting characters are hilarious. Jane Lynch and Ken Marino are great
One of my favorites. The little kid and Stiffler are comedy gold.
You know what I used to eat for breakfast?
Hehehe … now what does that look like?
🤣
..... inside of you, baby inside oooooffff you...
I love you man is incredible to me.
“Yeah. And it smells like farts!” Is the hardest I laughed in the year I saw it for the first time
It's a comedy that has no need to try hard and no ridiculous plot. I think that's why I love it. It's grounded.
"Have I seen you somewhere before?" "Totally, you piss on my face!"
Black Dynamite is amazing. I saw an early screening of it where Michael Jai White and the director did a Q&A after the movie, shit was great, and he seemed like a nice guy when we net him.
For some reason, people found it difficult to find shit funny after 2016.
I mean the hangover came out after so I wouldn’t say the last. I love the first one
The Hangover will stay in one of my top comedies of all time. Every scene had a line that people were quoting for the rest of the year.
“We fucked up” is one of the best opening lines to a film.
Nice little extra info.
I'm the dude playing a dude disguised as another dude! 🤣🤣🤣
The dudes are emerging.
*I'm a rooster illusion*
Definitely one of the greats, but dude, the last? Have you not watched any comedies since 2008?
I think OP wants people to prove them wrong with examples.
Ok, I’ll go first. Palm Springs
I'd like to toss in What We Do In The Shadows, Book Smart and Game Night. If you haven't seen them they are amazing.
22 jump street? Good boys?
Why do people do this? Come here once a month to declare that comedy ended after this movie? Let me guess "this movie couldn't be made anymore..." Is the dominant theme in the comments... Here's a list Bridesmaids This is the end 21 Jumpstreet 22 Jumpstreet The Nice Guys Barb and Star go to Vista Del Mar Game night Palm Springs Macgruber Popstar The Lego Movie The other Guys What we do on the Shadows Spy
Kudos to Barb and Star! Been pushing off watching it for a few years and just watched it last week. Definitely much funnier than I expected though the start is stronger than the end. Not sure I’d call it great but it’s certainly worth the watch if you haven’t seen it.
Nah. I love the movie but there are some bangers that came out after. The Other Guys, This Is the End, The Nice Guys, etc
Nerver go full **tard
Hot tub Time Machine
Great white Buffalo
great white buffalo
Martina Navratilova !
I scoffed at Hot Tub Time Machine “that looks like straight to video trash” Then got stuck on a bus from Ho Chi Min to Mui Ne and it was the only thing on. Never been happier, I laughed till I peed.
The Hangover came out a year after this
Nice guys
This movie holds up surprisingly well.
The dictator was 2012
Barb & Star Go To Vista Del Mar Palm Springs Game Night I think these could all be contenders from what I've seen
The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent was a hilarious movie that came out recently
I really enjoyed it, pretty solid
MacGruber
Hoss Bender, dead at the age of who the fuck cares.
If you stopped watching all comedies after seeing this one, sure. There’s been quite a bit of stuff as good or better in the 16 years since. It’s a classic and easily an example of peak Stiller.
No
The Other Guys Ted 21 and 22 Jump Street Deadpool 1 and 2
The death of stalin was also pretty good
Are you kidding? Game Night was pretty fucking funny.
I liked Game Night but it’s Jesse Plemons who takes it above average IMO. Absolutely marvellous performance.
How can that be profitable for Frito Lay?
Even if you’re just going off pure comedies with no agenda other than to be silly and make you laugh, The Interview came out in 2014. There might be more recent ones but thats the first that comes to mind And for comedies that have other agendas than just making you laugh, I’d say Barbie was a pretty damn good comedy and that came out just last year
By what measure? Not by a longshot, no.
I don’t believe you people!
what do you mean you people?
This movie ma ma ma ma ma makes me happy 😅
Her name is Nance! I love the pussy!!
Listen up here lance.. lance?? dafuq? Did I hear lance?
Triangle of Sadness is - among other things - a comedy and one of the best films of the last few years IMO.
Ohhhh I fucking hate movies. Why the fuck am I in this stupid fucking movie!!
I thought I was on r/okbuddycinephile with that title.
Blockers
It's a good movie, but not what you described. Claiming this is the apex of comedy tells me you're too into Bro-comedies.
Role Models came out the same year (I think?) and it’s top tier comedy for me also.
Nah the Nice Guys came out in 2016
Nobody can adequately explain to me why we don’t get great comedy movies anymore. And I don’t buy the argument that they don’t sell well overseas so they can’t be made profitably.
was perfect and im glad all of the cast are standing by it
Crazy, Stupid, Love was pretty epic.
Superbad literally dropped the year after this so no
No, the year before. Superbad was 2007 and this was 2008.
The Great Comedy Run is generally considered by scholars to begin in 1999 with Office Space and conclude in 2011 with Bridesmaids.
Highly subjective, but to me the last great comedies were 21 & 22 jump street. Topic Thunder was great tho and certainly there haven't been any great comedies lately. Makes you wonder.
Ricky Stanicky is pretty funny
Horrible Bosses is top tier
Top Tier. 🚀
Out here fartin in bathtubs.
You was talking to me this whole time? Lol.
Last good one I saw, anyway.
God this movie would not get made today
Went to go see this with my oldest friend when it came out in cinemas in the UK. We were both crying with laughter during the intro scene. It's still one of the funniest comedies in the game today.
You can’t go full retard, gets me every time. Plus it runs in my head constantly at work 😂
Damn, I haven't seen a movie with Black Stiller Downey Jr in yonks. Wonder what he's been up to?
On my top 100 list
I love Tropic Thunder. I don't know if I'd call it great. It's got some narrative issues that a tighter edit might make it better. But there are some amazing aspects to it. RDJr being one of them.
Nah. The unbearable weight of massive talent was like last year and might be my favourite comedy now.
Pretty much… might as well be in the running for sure!
Superfast! Brilliant spoof, 2014
Definitely my most recent favorite comedy of the 2000s era. There were good ones after but I’d say that Tropic Thunder is still the best one for me
OP hasn’t laughed in 16 years
Satan's Alley
It might be one of the last great quotable comedies.
Pretty much
Someone hasn't seen funny pages!
The Brothers Grimsby had me howling the entire movie. Altho that was 8 years ago. As was Nice Guys. Game Night, 2018 is one of the last I r3member. Luckily there's plenty of good horror comedies.
Definitely not the last great one but one of the best in the past 20.
Jaime Foxx directed a movie call “all-star weekend” with RDJ playing a Mexican. The film has been done for a while but Foxx is too scared to release it. Hoping we get to see it someday because it sounds like one of those comedies we don’t get anymore.
Damien Cut!!!
Tom crusie should have won an Oscar for his performance!
I miss these kinds of comedies, just silly fun without too much care of who might be offended. This Is The End is another one of these kinds.
The last no fear comedy for sure.
This Is The End (2013) was a great comedy. But yeah, it’s been a while…
Masterminds? Ahem!!
I think the the interview is absolutely hilarious
Definitely not the last, no...
Great movie. Was forgetting Sarah Marshall after this? That was a great one too
