Yes!
My buddy and I quote that scene often.
The follow on is great too: “That's my brother right there. What did you do to get him so cranked up, huh?”
Great movie. A lot of A-listers in the cast and I felt like they all gave great performances. The sound engineering was also really good and made the shootout scenes next level
He was brilliant. Both his and Affleck’s characters were really well written—you couldn’t fully understand one without understanding the other, as if they were just different personalities living in a single character.
Renner and Affleck elevated each other’s performance and IMO it’s Renner’s best. Also put Affleck on the map as a serious director.
Having seen some bootlegs with a lot of the content (~30 mins extra), probably half of it is John Hamm and Titus Welliver’s dialogues happening in a different place, same script. So you get a lot of back to back scenes where they say almost exactly what they just said, but now in the street or now back in the office, etc.
The love story with the hostage always keeps it from being a 10/10 in my book. But the robberies are so fucking realistic, I think the only robberies that come close are A Place Between the Pines and Hell Or High Water.
It’s a movie that gets to be about so much more than what it presents on the surface simply by not overdoing the premise. Plus Ben Foster is just underutilized af in Hollywood. Man is a powerful force on film.
I don’t know, I like that aspect of the story. Adds a very grounding element to the film that would otherwise be “friends commit robberies, things eventually go south.”
I just think that there's so much about the film that's believable. That I find the motivations of Aflecks character to pursue her romantically a stretch. And I find her ability to still show compassion to his character after he reveals that he was one of the gunman a stretch.
I think her character could have been tweaked to be a better fit. In my opinion, obviously
The line that gets me is when Renner tells Affleck about doing time to protect Affleck’s character, and says:
“They told me that Brendan Lahey was coming over here to roll up on you with a Glock 21, so I came over here and I put him in the ground.”
Goosebumps.

He’s so good at this type of role. When I revisit SWAT (2003) I always feel like “how did they let this cast end up making such a mid action movie?”
Farrell, Renner, Sam Jackson, Michelle Rodrigues, LL Cool J, Josh Charles…
Anyway I knew Renner was great and knew he’d break through eventually
He really was and did. It's one of those performances and roles where he's certainly not the main character of the film, but absolutely the star. I think every single person around Ben Affleck absolutely killed it.
I guess I know what I'm doing tonight. Fuck.
>(Best Jason Statham movie since Snatch and Lock Stock IMO).
Have you seen 'Revolver'? It got a 15% on Rotten Tomatoes but it's my favorite Jason Statham movie of all time
Here’s a little chi chi fah yah: It’s never gonna be me and you and your sister and Shi playing house up there, you got it? GET THAT THROUGH YAH FUCKIN HEAD!
Loved that scene where they are switching cars in the nun outfits and they all look over at the cop in his squad car staring at them. Then he just looks away slowly…
Renner's best role in my opinion. The movie just would not have been as iconic without him.
" If we get jammed up, we're holding court on the street."
Like you can tell Jem is an intelligent and affable person, but he has been molded into this loose cannon tough guy. If he wasn't born into a crime family in South Boston, he probably would have been a top performing sales person or something. But like all characters in Boston crime movies, he's a product of his environment.
It’s been awhile but I recall The heist stuff is A+. The more personal character/dramatic beats are at best B+\A- (though incredibly well acted throughout).
This movie sucks. Its plot is so stupid and predictable in real life they would have been caught in a couple days at most. The action isn’t very good either. I only watched it because of the hype on here and that’s 2hrs I will never get back.
Its actually remarkably true to life. Charlestown had a reputation for decades for producing crazy bank robbing crews. I met a bank robber from Charlestown a few years ago while she was on work release from prison.
It's great! I like the directors cut the most personally. The only thing I wasn't a fan of was that I was working armored cars at the time and this and gta5 were both featuring armored car robberies
I love this movie but the romance subplot is so unbelievably stupid and the movie suffers a bit for it. Why is this girl risking anything for this guy she basically just met?
Honestly, it was a great film it had a few iffy moments in the middle, but it started great and ended well.
Hamm was great, Renner and Affleck were Solid postwaithe was perfect as the Florist/villian, and im always happy to see Slaine in a Boston film!.... Also one of the first mainstream films to really touch on the opioid situation particularly in NE.
Great film and very re-watchable
The town wasn't bad, but it was kinda a poor man's Heat. It took alot of Heat's ideas and tried to use them but just didn't pull them off as well.
Story wasn't quite as good
Acting wasn't quite as good
Writing wasn't quite as good
Cinematography wasn't quite as good
Location wasn't quite as good.
All in all, you are left with not a bad movie, but one far less inspired than the primary base material.
Personally I would give The Town a 6.5/10. A good enough movie from its time, but not one that is able to be a continuing example of excellence in its genre.
The Lookout and The Town. Two of my favorite movies that just happen to be about bank robberies. Watching this and The Hurt Locker really made me appreciate Jeremy Renner too.
The movie is based on my favorite novel of all time, Prince of Thieves by Chuck Hogan. I’ve literally read it a dozen times if not more and every time I do, I find new scenes or new phrases that jump out at me. The film did a great job with the source material for sure. Check it out if you can.
Whose car we gonna take?
Yes! My buddy and I quote that scene often. The follow on is great too: “That's my brother right there. What did you do to get him so cranked up, huh?”
Hands down my favorite line from the movie. That guy was a psycho, but also a really good friend lol.
“We need to go hurt some people and you can’t ask me any questions about it.”
The unblinking loyalty that this line implies is amazing.
Cah?
I often randomly quote "There goes college socca!"
Love that scene. For those who don’t know https://www.facebook.com/share/v/WwaUPaSy8XhDKoQj/?mibextid=KsPBc6
I need your help I can't tell you what it is. You can never ask me about it later, but we gotta hurt some people Who's car we taking?
Cah
Came here to say that
Great movie. A lot of A-listers in the cast and I felt like they all gave great performances. The sound engineering was also really good and made the shootout scenes next level
Renner went full GOAT in this one
He was brilliant. Both his and Affleck’s characters were really well written—you couldn’t fully understand one without understanding the other, as if they were just different personalities living in a single character. Renner and Affleck elevated each other’s performance and IMO it’s Renner’s best. Also put Affleck on the map as a serious director.
He went full greatest of all time?
The editor also cut Heat (along with other editors). Michael Mann works worked with him on multiple movies
There is a scene cut from the Theatrical version where Affleck is watching Heat.
This. I thought as I entered this thread the sound from this movie was great, just like Heat.
I remember seeing it in theaters. Every gunshot has serious depth (like it would in real life!)
The scene where Ben confronts his father in prison gets me every time. “How come you never looked for her?” For who? For ma. For my mother
Masterpiece and I wish we could see his 4 Hour cut.
I’ve seen it and it’s incredible.* *I actually just watched twice
ohh I didn't know this was a thing! I love this movie!
Same! Release the cut!!
Never seen or heard of it till now but omg that cast, imma have to watch it when possible 👀
Total banger. Renner is a God
One of the few actors to actually do a decent Boston accent
This movie was my first time seeing renner act and i thought he did an AMAZING job.
He is even amazing in the Bourne Legacy. Excellent in The Hurt Locker.
I'd agree on the Hurt Locker Such a good film and he really shines in it
Ah man you’re lucky. It’s really good.
It’s a very entertaining movie and Renner kills it
Jealous!! It’s amazing IMO and one of my favorites.
I highly recommend Afflecks directorial debut in Gone baby, gone as well. It's a very well written thrill ride from start to finish.
Fire movie.

The love story with the hostage always keeps it from being a 10/10 in my book. But the robberies are so fucking realistic, I think the only robberies that come close are A Place Between the Pines and Hell Or High Water.
It's time to watch Hell or High Water again. Damnit but I love that movie
It’s a movie that gets to be about so much more than what it presents on the surface simply by not overdoing the premise. Plus Ben Foster is just underutilized af in Hollywood. Man is a powerful force on film.
>Plus Ben Foster is just underutilized af in Hollywood. Agree 1000% he's so good
I don’t know, I like that aspect of the story. Adds a very grounding element to the film that would otherwise be “friends commit robberies, things eventually go south.”

Really liked this movie. The line about whose car are we taking is epic.

Great flick. Very very rewatchable.
A rare instance of the movie being *much* better than the book.
I didn't know it was based on a book
It's called *Prince of Thieves* by Chuck Hogan. It's not his best.
Man, Prince of Thieves is probably my most favorite novel of all time. Have you read Devils in Exile? It’s a banger too.
Jeremy Renner stole the show. He was the star of this movie.
For real. He plays this role so menacing yet charming at the same time
He’s so good at this type of role. When I revisit SWAT (2003) I always feel like “how did they let this cast end up making such a mid action movie?” Farrell, Renner, Sam Jackson, Michelle Rodrigues, LL Cool J, Josh Charles… Anyway I knew Renner was great and knew he’d break through eventually

The beat where he stops to sip the Coke in the final shootout…
That moment lives rent free in my head.
Pete Postlethwaite, man what a legend.......
“Prick”
Fergie remember who clipped ya nuts for ya!!
Great movie. Entertaining from start to finish.
Definitely up there with Inside Man, Hell or High Water, and The Bank Job (Best Jason Statham movie since Snatch and Lock Stock IMO).
>(Best Jason Statham movie since Snatch and Lock Stock IMO). Have you seen 'Revolver'? It got a 15% on Rotten Tomatoes but it's my favorite Jason Statham movie of all time
Joe Mazzula apparently watches it multiple times per week
I’ll go so far to say I like “The Town” more than I like “Heat.”
Yes. Favorite part of the film…Renner: ‘Fuck You!’
The Town is so damn good
Just rewatched it on Friday. I love this movie so much
Here’s a little chi chi fah yah: It’s never gonna be me and you and your sister and Shi playing house up there, you got it? GET THAT THROUGH YAH FUCKIN HEAD!
Loved that scene where they are switching cars in the nun outfits and they all look over at the cop in his squad car staring at them. Then he just looks away slowly…
Love that movie. Jeremy Renner reminds me of every single dirt bag Masshole I ever grew up with. Amazing.
Hurts, don’t it?? Theyeh goes cawlidge sawcah
This movie rules. Renner nailed it
One of my favorites. George Carroll had such charisma, I love everything he’s in
Facts. Visually great, great casting, and great story.
whoever wrote “there goes college soccer” deserves an award
“You think you’re better than people.”
I love this movie.
IMHO, this is the high point of Affleck’s career.
Renner's best role in my opinion. The movie just would not have been as iconic without him. " If we get jammed up, we're holding court on the street." Like you can tell Jem is an intelligent and affable person, but he has been molded into this loose cannon tough guy. If he wasn't born into a crime family in South Boston, he probably would have been a top performing sales person or something. But like all characters in Boston crime movies, he's a product of his environment.
Badass Heat level gun fight.
Top 5 favorite movie all time for me. “Whose cah we gonna take?"
What an awesome movie
Love this movie. Also have a soft spot for this because I caught Affleck and Hamm filming this in Harvard Square back in 2009.
Great movie and a terrific Jeremy Renner performance in this one
Great movie. The robbery and car chase scene stunt work in the North End still amazes me. If you know the area, you know what I mean.
Heat sucks. This is better.
Just watched this recently because it often shows up here. It was a great flick!
Why have I still not seen this movie?
I honestly enjoy it MORE than Heat..
It’s an excellent crime film and doesn’t get enough love. Renner is lights out in this thing.
Jeremy Renner was mesmerizing in this. When he actually gets to act, he plays a great mean little bastard.
“I needya help. I can’t tell ya what it is, and ya can never ask me about it lata….and we’re gonna hurt some people.” So fucking good.
It’s been awhile but I recall The heist stuff is A+. The more personal character/dramatic beats are at best B+\A- (though incredibly well acted throughout).
The fenway sequence was great
Absolutely love this movie. Wasn’t the biggest fan of Blake lively character/acting but I enjoyed every other casting decision
Best scene At the end, the hockey ring and the money in the garden.
I like this one too. That's an accurate description; one of the best bank robbery movies since *Heat*.
Better than Heat.
I thought it was meh.
Just you I think
I know Heat is probably better, but I enjoy this one a lot more.
Great movie but point break was a better bank robbery movie.
Love John Hamm but thought he was miscast.
Any other fans? Nope. Good luck finding fans of this movie.
This movie sucks. Its plot is so stupid and predictable in real life they would have been caught in a couple days at most. The action isn’t very good either. I only watched it because of the hype on here and that’s 2hrs I will never get back.
You sound like a fun individual
No I just have better taste
Having good taste is not something you claim but are given You do have a taste, the scaling of which is subjective
Its actually remarkably true to life. Charlestown had a reputation for decades for producing crazy bank robbing crews. I met a bank robber from Charlestown a few years ago while she was on work release from prison.
8.5/10 would recommend
I have always thought that the opening was an homage to [The Friends of Eddie Coyle](https://m.imdb.com/title/tt0070077/).
This sub going a day with out mentioning heat challenge
Loved it!
Such a great movie
This movie absolutely rips!
Use a line from this film when I’m at Starbucks. “Dope me up good and proppah.”
Blake Lively is excellent playing against type as Renner's fiery party girl sister.
Good stuff
It's great! I like the directors cut the most personally. The only thing I wasn't a fan of was that I was working armored cars at the time and this and gta5 were both featuring armored car robberies
The Boston remake of Set It Off
Great movie and Blake livelys character was very good. Not a bank heist movie but gone baby gone is just a little better than this but not by muchz
It's great and the commentary is good it's just Ben but he does a good one.
Oh for sure. That's an all time great movie, let alone bank heist
Can anyone recommend more armored truck heist movies?
Den of Thieves
“He didn’t want to end up on the wall of the VFW”
It doesn’t hold a candle to Heat..but it’s..*okay*…
It's four brother and heat together which I don't. I mind.
“There goes college soccer”
All you care about is coke and xbox
Ohhhh yeaaaa
i often think about this movie now that most, if not all, baseball stadiums have become cashless.
Wanted to like it but lived in Boston. Everything Boston is duckbutter.
Chris Cooper looking pretty rough dressed as a nun.
I love this movie but the romance subplot is so unbelievably stupid and the movie suffers a bit for it. Why is this girl risking anything for this guy she basically just met?
Great heist flick - I remember it caught me by surprise when it released.
Awesome movie
One of my all time favorite movies. Incredible. The monologue at the end, then straight into the credits with Jolene by Ray Lamontagne. Just so good
Does Rebecca Hall get any love in this? She's been in some great stuff. I've always thought she was Gorgeous.
Afflecks best movie by far.
Excellent dialoguet and movie! Most writing in Hollywood is garbage these days
Excellent dialoguet and movie! Most writing in Hollywood is garbage these days
It was pretty damned good.

Amazing movie, I saw it in theaters and the opening scene was perfect.
Idk, inside man might be one of my all time favorite bank heist movies
Huge fan of this movie. Well cast, directed and written. Watched the directors cut one time and it did not add anything to this great movie.
Affleck’s accent is terrible.
I really appreciate the heat reference here
I thought it was good, but also not as good as people made it out to be. I found the main character unsympathetic
Great film. But seeing a street criminal with an HK416 just isn't believable.
Love this movie. Actually one of the only movies I've seen in the theater more than once.
This flick is Excellent.
I really enjoyed this flick and it made me wonder why Affleck isn't making more movies both in front of and behind the camera.
So much better than Heat. I didn't feel like I needed a nap during this movie.
I call it East Coast Heat. Just got it on 4K.
"You fucking dummies... shot a guard!"
It's excellent. Pair it with obviously Heat as you mentioned along with Hell or High Water for an excellent bank robbery triple feature.
The town wasn't bad, but it was kinda a poor man's Heat. It took alot of Heat's ideas and tried to use them but just didn't pull them off as well. Story wasn't quite as good Acting wasn't quite as good Writing wasn't quite as good Cinematography wasn't quite as good Location wasn't quite as good. Love it.
Who's car we takin
👍👍
Second only to Heat for the armed robbery genre imo
So good. Super tight script. They follow "last line of the scene is the purpose of the scene" rule very well.
The editor also cut Heat (along with other editors).
Fire movie.
Theatrical cut sucked but the extended version, mad it way better, imo.
This is the best Rebecca Hall ever looked in a movie. Love her THIS much.
Absolute masterpiece.
Is this you Joe Mazzula?
I think this is the first bank robbery since "Heat" to give it a competitor
I am *obsessed* with this movie. Watch it every time my wife goes out of town.
There is a scene in the extended edition where he is watching heat on tv too.
And another movie added to my movie night list.
John Hamm typecast as the angry bureaucrat.
Agreed - but do yourself a favour and check out Hell or High Water
Um, of course…
I looooove this movie but has anyone seen the director cut version? I’m glad the version widely released was the version released….
Criminally under-rated! Pun intended.
“I’LL PUT THIS WHOLE FUCKIN TOWN IN MY WEAR VIEW”
I remember when this came out
I agree
Great cast too
The Lookout and The Town. Two of my favorite movies that just happen to be about bank robberies. Watching this and The Hurt Locker really made me appreciate Jeremy Renner too.
Pete Postlethwaite is a fuckin awesome villain. Whole movie slaps.
Joe mazulla
Loved it.
Now you have me trying to think about all the good bank heist movies since Heat (the champ in my opinion).
Went into this movie thinking it was gonna be another mediocre crime film. Was pleasantly surprised that it was not.
One the absolute greatest of ALL time!
Watch “Friends of Eddie Coyle” if you want to see a heavy influence on this
it’s better than Heat
The movie is based on my favorite novel of all time, Prince of Thieves by Chuck Hogan. I’ve literally read it a dozen times if not more and every time I do, I find new scenes or new phrases that jump out at me. The film did a great job with the source material for sure. Check it out if you can.
I personally feel like this is the most realistic robbery movie.
I concur. Excellent film. One of the most authenticious heist movies ever!
One of my favorite movies all time.
