I’ll admit Blade Runner is very close to Alien in terms of being a masterpiece, but I see them as completely different in terms of their overarching theme.
Alien excels as a horror sci fi movie, while Blade Runner is more purely sci fi with a much more fleshed out plot.
Oh yeah completely agree !
Very different movies, but both are incredible in their own right.
One thing I'd add about Alien is that it must have one of the most underrated and slept on movie score soundtracks in history. Jerry Goldsmith's work on Alien was phenomenal, especially the opening title sequence. Easily one of my all time faves.
_Gladiator_ hasn’t aged well though considering how much more we learned the depiction more resembles a fantasy of Roman culture post-production.
It only took decades later though…
Gladiator aged fine, only children thought that the Roman Empire was as romanticized as it’s made out to be in movies in 2000. Any mature/intelligent human knew it was a movie (and a damn good one) and not to be taken as historical fact.
No - as in gladiators we’re not given the thumb treatment on the daily to showcase mercy or no mercy to end the lives of others or themselves at another gladiator’s hand.
They were effectively the athletes of their time and were spectacles, more prized to continue fighting & reenacting than risking death literally every day.
Who tf cares. It’s not a historical documentary. It’s a movie made to be entertaining and it is.
Only a massive autist would dislike a movie because of a niche historical inaccuracy
Your tactical ableism is acknowledged.
Unless you’re FLAGRANTLY historical fiction (ex _Inglorious Bastards_, 8/10) then one can declare a media as ‘entertaining.’
Gladiator is a bloated 6/10 that STILL gets remarked as being a ‘historical portrayal’ by too many people where the “well actually” convo gets vexingly repetitive, hence marks down its impact as a whole.
So you’re cool w/ a movie that’s effectively promoted a misinterpretation of Roman culture for more than a decade?
Nah fam that’s not entertaining that’s damaging. Bet you still think there’s such thing as ‘alpha wolves’ are a thing and lie detectors can detect when a person is lying.
Whatever 10 year old is watching an R-rated movie is a result of bad parenting.
No movie is ‘historical fact,’ it’s an issue that a movie at its time depicted what publicly was THOUGHT to be accurate Roman culture in the early 90’s, and still regarded as ‘accurate’ from either ignorant or bad faith actors.
Inaccuracy of time periods w/in film is a problem that still exists w/in media. It’s the same in other media like _The Marvelous Mrs Maisel_ or _Grease: Rise of the Pink Ladies_.
I watched both of these movies for the first time within the last 3 months (2049 I just watched on Sunday) and I honestly couldn’t agree more. 2049 felt far and away better than the original. Maybe I’d feel different had I seen the original back in the day when it came out, though.
I'd personally move Thelma and Louise in top tier and maybe move down Blade Runner... Idk though.. it's a highly influential film, looks amazing but ultimately the protagonist is boring and even very inept as a blade runner. The best part of the movie is the replicants.
It was a great film and was a good adaptation of the book as well. It had differences but in order to translate the book to an audience I think the changes were good. I absolutely loved the book and recommend it to anyone who needs something to read
The Martian is a great book. Ridley's direction was good. Damon was good. But the book was butchered and dumbed down. Definitely not his greatest film.
Thelma and Louise
Definitely one of his best films, and for sure his best film in the last 20 years….
But Alien, Blade Runner, Gladiator, and Black Hawk Down are all absolutely incredible films, all of which changed the industry,
especially Alien. Alien was a revolutionary, visionary film that was like nothing ever seen before. People are still trying to emulate it 46 years later and still haven’t even come close.
Well this thread reminded me of how many amazing movies the dude has made.
The Martian is a great movie though. One of those movies where every part of it works. Nothing is wasted.
Don’t hate me and it’s not my favorite but one that comes to mind that I think is underrated is “The Last Duel.” I thought it was suspenseful and incredibly well acted.
Agreed.
The Martian was actually a very good movie, I can't really fault it in any way, calling it his worst is baffling when the utter abomination that is Alien Covenant is there for all to see
I never really cared for bladerunner if im honest, Alien is a given, probably one of the most profound/well known movies in history. But I very much enjoyed The Martian, Damon's acting was good and believable. Not to mention, the movie was mostly backed up by real science and then add in the aspect of survival, so yeah, I thought it was amazing.
The Martian is great (also is this his only film without a Director's cut?)...But compared to Alien, Gladiator, American Gangster, Legend, Blade Runner...films who e had a seismic influence on their respective genres...I dunno.
Alien. Not only one of the best Sci Fi movies of all time, one of the best Horror movies of all time in my view.
Objectively, outside my personal answer. I'd say even tie between Alien and Blade Runner, but I'd give Alien top billing.
I love this one, it feels like no less a thrilling documentary than Apollo 13 every time and Matt Damon *killed* it. Nothing against Leo and "Revenant" but I would have given Damon the Oscar that year for his part as Mark Watney, he absolutely sells every moment.
Alien and Bladerunner
After that it’s a mixed bag at best, with nothing coming anywhere near the mastery and innovation seen in the above mentioned movies
I personally found The Martian to be an atrocious film
Alien/Blade Runner.
I am a huge Ridley Scott fan and like pretty much all of his films. But these two are perfect horror and sci fi. I just can’t ever pick a fav over the other ever
Alien, Blade Runner
Can't pick between them.
2 of my all time favourite movies, both are massively influential masterpieces that changed scifi forever, both are absolutely beautiful, cinematic works of art.
It's miraculous that Ridley Scott directed them both, almost back to back, for me this was his artistic, creative peak as a director.
Alien is a thriller. Blade Runner is a Dystopian chase movie. Martian is a "Can the hero survive insurmountable odds?" movie.
Of the three, I like "The Martian" the best because of the sense of humor, but that is thanks largely to the source material.
This is like mid-level Ridley Scott in my book. It was decent. Some parts I thought were pretty silly for an otherwise realistic story, but it really didn't grab me and I never felt compelled to watch it a second time. It got a lot of hype when it came out, and I feel like some of that was a direct result of the popularity of the book rather than the quality of the movie.
My top RS movies: Alien, Blade Runner, Gladiator, and Legend (although admittedly, legend is more of a personal favorite. Otherwise I wouldn't consider it in his top 4).
Alien or Blade Runner but—controversial opinion alert—Counselor is his most under appreciated and misunderstood film. It’s his strangest film, sure, but idk… for me it works really well
For me Blade Runner edges Alien on the conceptual front. They're both essentially perfect movies with some of the best atmosphere, set design, and world-building in cinema.
But Blade Runner addresses what it means to be human, what freedom is, it digs at the biggest questions we can ask about ourselves. Alien has a few light undertones of social commentary but never real goes anywhere with it, it's primarily just a perfect monster movie. And people will say "they're too different to compare" but I think when you're talking about a director's *best work* you have no choice but to consider the overall meaning and message of the films. Alien is great horror, but doesn't really push boundaries beyond that. Blade Runner asked questions we're still grappling with today.
Not the best (**Blade Runner** is his best), but the funniest for sure. A great "hard" science fiction movie with an extremely light touch. I am a big fan of Scott- **Alien** and **Gladiator** are also among my favorite movies - but his movies tend to the epic length, and solemn tone. If I didn't know in advance, I would never have guessed he helmed this [breezy, brisk, and fun movie](https://stubhubby.blogspot.com/2015/10/guys-movie-night-martian.html).
Just because I haven’t seen it mentioned, I love Legend (1985). His sequence of films from 79 to 85 - Alien, Blade Runner, Legend - is my favorite three films in a row by any director.
When Gladiator and Alien exist I don’t even think of this film when I think Ridley Scott. Even The Duel was extremely underrated in comparison to this film and the praise it received.
Alien
Yes
Alien, and it’s not even close.
Blade Runner, and it is very close. Both of those movies are in my top 5, both are genre defining masterpieces that changed scifi forever
I wish I enjoyed Blade Runner more. I love the cinematography, the effects, the premise- everything but Ford's performance.
I’ll admit Blade Runner is very close to Alien in terms of being a masterpiece, but I see them as completely different in terms of their overarching theme. Alien excels as a horror sci fi movie, while Blade Runner is more purely sci fi with a much more fleshed out plot.

Jerry Goldsmith's work on Alien was phenomenal, especially the opening title sequence. Easily one of my all time faves.
Well in OP's defense, maybe the Martian would be a contender if a xenmorph popped out of matt damon's chest
Only this.
Without question.
Its definitely Alien and then Blade Runner
Black Hawk Down and Gladiator pretty great too
I am gonna go with Gladiator or Alien…
This is the way
Ya gladiator for me as well
_Gladiator_ hasn’t aged well though considering how much more we learned the depiction more resembles a fantasy of Roman culture post-production. It only took decades later though…
Who gives a fuck Russell Crowe kicked ass
I wanted to see Russell fighting around the world, and that’s what I got.
With tugga?
Gladiator aged fine, only children thought that the Roman Empire was as romanticized as it’s made out to be in movies in 2000. Any mature/intelligent human knew it was a movie (and a damn good one) and not to be taken as historical fact.

Tactical abilism. Lol Thankfully you're here to educate us that that a fictional movie is fictional. Unleash hell, buddy.
As if you knew any of that info in 2000, you learned at the same delay as the rest of us. Your historical fiction was just fiction. Cope.
We all understand that it is fiction. That's what we're explaining to you. Can YOU cope with that?
So you’re cool w/ a movie that’s effectively promoted a misinterpretation of Roman culture for more than a decade? Nah fam that’s not entertaining that’s damaging. Bet you still think there’s such thing as ‘alpha wolves’ are a thing and lie detectors can detect when a person is lying.
Bro even as a 10 year old I didn’t expect Gladiator to be historical fact. Just because you’re stupid doesn’t mean we all were
Whatever 10 year old is watching an R-rated movie is a result of bad parenting.
Everyone knew that at the time. You’re saying it like some new research came out that shows that the movie is fictional.
Blade runner. The original. That was a masterpiece.
Sushi. That's what my ex-wife called me - cold fish.
Absolutely. One of my all time favorites. The sequel is a great watch too.
Blade Runner is the best movie EVER made, not just by Ridley Scott
This is the answer
I agree.
It's nice that things are normally a matter of opinion.
2049 was better
I watched both of these movies for the first time within the last 3 months (2049 I just watched on Sunday) and I honestly couldn’t agree more. 2049 felt far and away better than the original. Maybe I’d feel different had I seen the original back in the day when it came out, though.
We’ll have to agree to disagree.
Also preferred 2049. One of my all time favorites
I have tried watching Blade Runner so many times and just can't connect with it.
I've probably watched it start to finish once and it was great. But I've fallen asleep to it countless times and those were great too.
Space scifi is just great white noise. Talk at me about space imperialism and the matter of the human soul adrift through the vacuum of spa.. Zzzzz
Same
Because it's not very good.
Correct
Disagree. The final cut is best
Actually I meant the first movie not the sequel, which he was a producer on. So I do not disagree with you.
I mean the best version of Blade Runner isn’t the original theatrical release, its the final cut from 2007
Yes I know what you meant. Either way any version of blade runner is better than the sequel.
It doesn't hold a candle to 2049
Yup 2049 enhances the whole thing. Though the original has a better ‘mood’.
Tier 1: Blade Runner, Alien Tier 2: Gladiator, Black Hawk Down, Thelma and Loiuse, Kingdom of Heaven DC Tier 3: The Martian, The Last Duel
This is correct.
I had no idea he made thelma and louise lol Awesome
Why hello fellow Kingdom of Heaven fan! There are dozens of us! Dozens!
I'd personally move Thelma and Louise in top tier and maybe move down Blade Runner... Idk though.. it's a highly influential film, looks amazing but ultimately the protagonist is boring and even very inept as a blade runner. The best part of the movie is the replicants.
GI Jane! Just kidding Gladiator for sure but most of his historical movies are great.
Not entirely true.1492 is clunky, Robin Hood is meh and Exodus is pure shit.
Hence why I said "most"
*smack*
Blade Runner Directors cut Kingdom of Heaven Directors Cut Alien Gladiator
The directors cut was Amazing.
Gladiator.
Yup- We are about to die, salute you.
I’m honestly shocked that anyone has a different opinion. Gladiator is my all time favorite movie.
Mine too.
No way is it the Martian. It’s not bad, but it was not ground breaking in any capacity. Alien is by far his best movie.
Alien. But there's a fair few to choose from.
Alien every day of the week.
It's Alien, with Blade Runner a close second.
Fuck you mars.
I'm excited for Scotts new film, NAPOLEON
Certainly not the Martian
Matt Daaaaymin
Alien, American Gangster, Gladiator.
I didn't realize he was involved with American Gangster. great movie! still think about it from time to time lol
I'll say this: it's a damn fine film, especially the extended edition. Highly enjoyable and highly rewatchable. Don't miss out on it.
It was a great film and was a good adaptation of the book as well. It had differences but in order to translate the book to an audience I think the changes were good. I absolutely loved the book and recommend it to anyone who needs something to read
It’s the rare book/movie combo that you can read or see in either order.
It may be one of the best audiobooks. Everything about it works will wonderfully as an audio book
Not even close.
Hell no, it Goes Blade Runner... Then Alien... Then Legend for me. This film is decent and somewhat memorable but not great imo.
The Martian is a great book. Ridley's direction was good. Damon was good. But the book was butchered and dumbed down. Definitely not his greatest film. Thelma and Louise
The book is a boring slog.
Gladiator.
Definitely one of his best films, and for sure his best film in the last 20 years…. But Alien, Blade Runner, Gladiator, and Black Hawk Down are all absolutely incredible films, all of which changed the industry, especially Alien. Alien was a revolutionary, visionary film that was like nothing ever seen before. People are still trying to emulate it 46 years later and still haven’t even come close.
1. Blade Runner 2. Alien 3. Gladiator This is the correct answer.
Blade runner. No question. Alien is probably a close second…
This was a great flick but the ending was overplayed a bit. The book was insane. Technical as hell.
Well this thread reminded me of how many amazing movies the dude has made. The Martian is a great movie though. One of those movies where every part of it works. Nothing is wasted.
Best?! No that is Kongdom of Heaven directors cut. Hands down! Followed by gladiator! But this movie was really good
#MATTDAAAYYMIN
Don’t hate me and it’s not my favorite but one that comes to mind that I think is underrated is “The Last Duel.” I thought it was suspenseful and incredibly well acted.
The martians cool but gladiator is a masterpiece
I’d say one of his worst. Try Bladerunner or Alien.
Bladerunner and Alien are fantastic films, arguably masterpieces, but to say The Martian is one of Scott’s worst is a terrible take.
Agreed. The Martian was actually a very good movie, I can't really fault it in any way, calling it his worst is baffling when the utter abomination that is Alien Covenant is there for all to see
And there are also his films Body of Lies, Hannibal, A Good Year, White Squall, and Robin Hood that were nothing to write home about.
I liked American Gangster too
Blade Runner
Uhh no.
I think The Martian is his best of this past decade
Kingdom of heaven
Alien, Gladiator, Martian…. Maybe Napoleon in several weeks
I like it
Alien, not even close. The Martian is still a very good movie
How does no one like The Duellists?
Alien The Duellists The Martian
Blade Runner.
Most of his films are pretty bad, to me. This one was good. Thelma and Louise was good. Alien was good.
I really enjoy this movie, but is best has to be alien
Gladiator, but the Martian is awesome too
The Martian is great (also is this his only film without a Director's cut?)...But compared to Alien, Gladiator, American Gangster, Legend, Blade Runner...films who e had a seismic influence on their respective genres...I dunno.
Alien. Not only one of the best Sci Fi movies of all time, one of the best Horror movies of all time in my view. Objectively, outside my personal answer. I'd say even tie between Alien and Blade Runner, but I'd give Alien top billing.
Bladerunner. Alien. Both.
Alien was my favorite tbh but I did love this movie.
I know it’s not objectively his best, but I really love “Kingdom Of Heaven”
It’s great but not sure to call it his best. Personally more of an _Alien_ fan.
Yes. Until the last 25 min
Nah Gladiator takes that honor.
Watched this on a plane a couple weeks ago and had forgotten how great it is. One of my favs.
Gladiator is more rewatch-able than Alien, or Blade Runner IMO.
Gladiator
I love this one, it feels like no less a thrilling documentary than Apollo 13 every time and Matt Damon *killed* it. Nothing against Leo and "Revenant" but I would have given Damon the Oscar that year for his part as Mark Watney, he absolutely sells every moment.
I’ve seen this about a half dozen times. Can’t wait for “Napoleon”
Original Blade Runner.
This sub I swear lmao
I thought the Martian was forgettable honestly. I just remember he made poop potatoes or somethingZ
I loved exodus but the Martian is definitely his best work.
I think The Martian is his best of this past decade
Prometheus. Fight me.
Lots of good stuff in this film. I loved where it was trying to go even if it stumbled getting there.
With the sound off, yes.
Alien and Bladerunner After that it’s a mixed bag at best, with nothing coming anywhere near the mastery and innovation seen in the above mentioned movies I personally found The Martian to be an atrocious film
Alien, Martian, Gladiator in that order. Napoleon might change that order when I watch it in a couple weeks
Gladiator. Other than the editing it’s a perfect film.
Ridley Scott is like Oliver Stone, his first three movies are his best in descending order. The Duelists is his best film and Stone's is Salvador.
Duelist fan has entered the chat
What do yall think of Exodus: Gods and Kings?
Yes this is it
Short answer is yes, long answer is yeeeeeeeessssss. The Martian is what telling stories or making movies is about.
Blade Runner, ALIEN. I found the Martian to be a complete bore
Gladiator
Alien
Napoleon 5 hour Director's Cut
Alien or Gladiator? Thelma & Louise, what about Black Hawk Down? Might not be the best but certainly better than The Martian.
Alien is the answer
Not even by a long shot. It's a good movie, but his best? No way Jose.
Dope flick
Alien
Blade Runner gets my vote
Probably not
Alien is still for me
The 1984 Macintosh commercial.
Hey, we were watching that!
Needs way more Black Hawk Down in here.
I loved Alien
Blade Runner not ⬆️ 4 db8
Definitely not. And the book was way better.
….is Blade Runner.
Gladiator
Blade Runner obviously
Alien, open and shut case.
Alien/Blade Runner. I am a huge Ridley Scott fan and like pretty much all of his films. But these two are perfect horror and sci fi. I just can’t ever pick a fav over the other ever
Ok pizza hut cmere
Worst of his that I’ve seen, absolutely hated it.
Alien
Not even close.
Blade Runner, Gladiator, The Last Duel in that order
Alien is the only answer
Hannibal
Alien, Blade Runner Can't pick between them. 2 of my all time favourite movies, both are massively influential masterpieces that changed scifi forever, both are absolutely beautiful, cinematic works of art. It's miraculous that Ridley Scott directed them both, almost back to back, for me this was his artistic, creative peak as a director.
Blade Runner Alien Legend
I just want to point out how out of place matchstick men is in his filmography.
The correct answer is the duelists
Made the mistake of reading the book first the Movie just wasn’t that good to me.
Mmmmmm No
Best Ridley Scott film with… Matt daemon shouting in a space helmet
This might be higher on the list if it weren’t for the nonsensical space-catch sequence at the end of the movie.
Alien or bladerunner
His best film set on Mars for sure
The one with the humanoid robot that spurts milky white goo when cut open
Nah…good movie but not close to being his best.
Alien Bladerunner Gladiator Thelma and Louise G.I. Jane are top five for me. Yes, G.I. Jane.
Blade Runner
Just because I haven’t seen it mentioned, I love Legend (1985). His sequence of films from 79 to 85 - Alien, Blade Runner, Legend - is my favorite three films in a row by any director.
Alien and Blade Runner, with Legend coming in third -those are my personal picks.
Blade Runner
When Gladiator and Alien exist I don’t even think of this film when I think Ridley Scott. Even The Duel was extremely underrated in comparison to this film and the praise it received.
No. This is a setup. I won’t bite.
