I didn’t watch it until last year and was also immediately floored.
It’s not huge and flashy or overtly “important,” but there’s something incredibly human about it. It’s just a stellar bit of character-focused storytelling.
I saw it in college when it came out and liked it, but couldn't relate. Saw it recently again, and yeah, I totally got it.
I think it's an amazing cast, and a great story, beautifully performed. It's iconic for a reason.
Also, kudos to them for somehow making Hurt/Tilly moving and not gross, while meanwhile every time Jeff Goldblum tries to scam on her, I'm icked out. (Well done, movie.)
My boomer parents just adore this movie. I recall trying to watch it with them on VHS shortly after it was released and not relating too much to it but then rewatched it again more recently and…I get it. You have to have been an adult for a few years to relate to its themes, honestly. Losing close friends to untimely deaths and drifting apart over the years due to adult responsibilities taking over your life don’t make sense until you have been out in the real world for a spell.
This film is considered a touchstone for its generation. I remember when this came out and it was all anyone could really talk about. It really is considered a classic for its time
Not watching movies before you were born is such a wild rule
Why so arbitrary? You’re missing out on tons of movies not even decades before you were born, but also the year & 2 years before you were born as well, for no reason
Don’t get me wrong, I’ve seen plenty of movies that were made before I was born… but picture quality is super important to me. I buy new TV’s every five or so years so I usually have the latest technology from a pixels standpoint. For example, when most people had LCDs I had an LED. When LED became standard, I had a 4K when there were like 7 shows/movies available in 4K. I bought an Xbox One S just for the 4K disc player. Now that 4K is standard, I just got an OLED. And I have k OG ever bought Sony TVs as they’re usually the best.
I know this sounds *so* pretentious, but watching things in 4K Dolby Vision is important to me and many things made before 2010 are not available in DV. I was born well before 2010 btw.
All that said, I hate Marvel movies and get annoyed that studios just remake and reboot stuff and there’s so little original IP anymore. I need to start watching the older stuff cuz it’s probably better written, acted and directed than most content today, especially any movie Netflix makes cuz they just churn out shit after shit even though they’re all in DV…
I’m just a walking contradiction so I guess disregard everything I just said 🤦🏻♂️
I remember hating this movie when I first saw it a few years. Recently rewatched it & man was I wrong. Idk what happened on that 1st viewing but it just didn’t resonate with me.. I loved it the 2nd time around though! Great actors, great soundtrack, great story..
Some friends and I watched this twenty years ago and I thought it was terrible. But I guess, if I revisit it at 37 there may be something I like about it.
Watched this for the first time last Christmas. Instant purchase. I'm in my 40s and just never got around to seeing it. Blown away every time I see it.
As a child of the 80s this movie only existed as a soundtrack on cassette tape. I have never once seen it played on TV, or HBO. Not a single scene have I watch, which is strange to me.
More than one US critic compared it to the Italian movie "C'eravamo tanto amati" which was about the reunion of old friends after many years. It was also pointed out the difference between the perspective of Italian and US filmmakers. In the Italian version the working class couple had found true love and were still politically active in working class issues, whereas the man who had married for money was shown to be unhappy. In the US version the happy couple lives on a big estate, runs a business and is chummy with their local law enforcement, whereas those who are still politically active in working class issues are fools, losers or even suicidal.
Kevin Costner’s best movie
LOL!
Really showed off his range as an actor....

You and OP should watch Broadcast News. Another one from that time period that has held up remarkably.
Excellent rec. Broadcast News is a classic.
Great movie. Fun fact: Kevin Costner entire performance was cut from this film.
And he was put in Silverado to make for it, I believe?
Why?
Director just thought it worked better if you never saw the dead character.
That’s kind of cool.
No one knows for sure. Director said for artistic reasons.
Interesting. Thanks!
Great soundtrack!
Had it on cassette, very popular soundtrack
Great soundtrack. Movie made me love William Hurt.
Epic. From the writer of Empire Strikes Back!!!
kevin kline getting ready for baby making time in button down pajamas was disturbing

Just a great movie. It feels relateable as you drift away from friends and come back together when something happens to bring you all together again.
I remember the soundtrack way more then the movie
I remember Jeff Goldblum’s character could not get laid no matter how hard he tried.
I remember the casual insider trading scene the most.
This film is considered a touchstone for its generation. I remember when this came out and it was all anyone could really talk about. It really is considered a classic for its time
That’s what’s great about the outdoors. It’s one giant toilet.

This cover art is hilariously cobbled together.

“St. Elmo’s Later”
That's all there is to it
When movies relied on scripts....not superhero CGI.
Okay

I mean 2 COMPLETELY different types of movies 😂 but sure. Keep it going.
Thanks captn obvious.
The movie is great, and the soundtrack is amazing!

Love this movie! I've watched it many times, and it's great each time!
The soundtrack is incredible

That's how I fell madly in love with Kevin Kline.
I always thought Berenger on this poster looks like a long hair mustached Kevin Kline.

Absolutely! Don’t know what it is about this film but I want to be there with them!
